Yeah, I doubt he will come in as a QB and they mentioned perhaps come in as an ATH. WR looks full, but some schools were saying DB.

These are some quotes from the article I read about Steven Ortiz. I know it's a long time before he signs and a lot can happen between now and then, but I love when recruits talk like this. He reminds me of Carter Coughlin when he committed:

“They are on the rise and the coaches are very trustworthy. Now it’s about continuing to build something special, really. The more guys I can help recruit to come with me, we’ll build something. I can promise you that. We’re going to have the No. 1 recruiting class in Minnesota history.”

“I’m already on track to graduate early so I can get to Minnesota faster, get in my playbook and start all my classes. I’m ending my recruitment and there will be no de-committing from me. I’m 1,000 percent committed to Minnesota.”
It definitely seems like he is actively trying to get guys to sign with him. Like you said, long way out, but Tweets like this are encouraging, for showing a level of dedication to the program:

Ease your mind, have a banana or two.

It'll be very interesting to see what the NCAA will do with eligibility and number of scholarships if we miss a full season of sports.

What do you do with 2 full classes of freshman, but also have sophomores, juniors and seniors on scholarship? There will be some very god players who wont ever see the field. I could see transfers happening and some mid-level and low-level schools getting a boost in depth/talent.

If it happens, it will be crazy.

Impressive list of offers. Ohio State, Penn State, Texas, and USC are on that list of offers as well..... :M:

He is a 4 star recruit in Rivals (which tends to be more conservative with star ratings).

Great to see him back and intrigued to see where he ends up as I doubt he will play QB with another in the class and WR, we have two already, so maybe on the defensive side.

He committed, then de-committed. I think the story is he wanted to play QB and Gophers weren't originally looking at him for that since they had a 2021 QB already. I think they wanted him as a WR, so de-committed. What it sounds like is they will bring him as a ATH and may still get a look at QB, but who knows.

brief timeline of his recruitment:

Februrary 3, 2019 - Jackson commits to P.J. Fleck and the Gophers
Jackson continues to receive offers from everybody — Wisconsin, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas State, Iowa, Virginia Tech, Michigan State, Notre Dame and many more
January 24, 2020 - Jackson decommits from the Gophers
April 22, 2020 - Jackson commits to the Gophers (again)

Hmmm. One issue he is going to face universally is his lack of height. He is 5'10" or 5'11" depending on the source. That is pretty short for a Power Five QB. It isn't unprecedented. Antwaan Randle El is 5'10". But he is going to have to be one hell of a QB. I am curious if his other offers came back as an ATH so he chose MN after testing the QB waters at the other schools.

The Gophers also have Athan Kaliakmanis, who is 6'3", coming in 2021 as a QB.

Both are coming in as 3 star QB per Rivals, although Athan was a 4 star before he missed part of last season with an injury. Both players seem to be great athletes and I hope both push each other at the QB spot. As we saw last year, depth at QB is very important.

Edit, looking back at his list of scholarship offer, I can't say I have ever seen a Rivals 3 star with this impressive of a list of schools. PJ is bringing in some players!

My guess is PJ told him to look around because he probably wont be a Big Ten QB and found that most Power 5 schools felt the same way. I dont care why I will take his commitment all day long :)

I happily eat crow every day for my not wanting him to get the job. PJ is da man :)

Athan was a 4* but got hurt and was out. He is the QB they want and a reason they didn’t take one in 2020 given the ones on the scholarship already in Clark, Kramer, Annexstsd and Morgan.

Jackson is an athlete and could be used in a fun way.

FWIW ESPN is not a great source for recruiting ranks -- they didn't even have a rating for the Vikings top pick last night when he enrolled at LSU and he was a legacy football player with two brothers who played for the Tigers. Just one example of many.

In fairness to ESPN, he was a 2 star recruit on Rivals.com. With a rating of 5.2 he lagged behind all other LSU recruits by a lot. The next lowest recruit in 2017 had a rating of 5.5.

A bit surprised we don't see at least 2 Gophers in the first 3 rounds. I thought Coughlin or Martin would have a shot in the 3rd.

I think they were mainly projected late 3 or 4 but Johnson and Kamal have the best shot. Martin has the build for the LB position but injuries hinder his stock. Carter will go somewhere but not quite a DE and a project at LB.

I hear all the hype about how Derrick Brown was such a stud for Auburn. I.E. " No one was able to handle him but..." some guard from Alabama?
I thought the Gopher O-line handled him as he was moved all over the formation and at the end he was, as the whole Auburn front 7 was, getting rolled up.
Some of those boys will be talked about in the future drafts

Kamal Martin to Green Bay at 175 (Rd 5. 30th pick)
Two compensatory picks in the 5th round so 34 total picks.
2/3rd through 6th round Coughlin still on the board - I'm a homer and I know it, but I'm surprised.

I expected Winfield and Johnson to be gone by end of 3 and all four to be gone by end of 5.

Rodney Smith to sigh with the Carolina Panthers. So, 5 drafted and 6 “selected” this week.

Definitely impressive given recent trends with the program and something you can use recruiting. Granted later rounds but will have a 1st round pick next year and potentially more players signing UFA contracts in the coming days

Nothing is a for sure.
I think Rashod will likely be a first round pick barring any major issues.

If Bateman stays healthy and decides to turn pro I'd guess he'll be a first round guy.

Two first-rounders isn't outside the realm of possibility.

He has another season like he did this year and will be on a lot of team's radar. Bateman should continue to progress but hopefully someone steps up at WR2 and WR3

For QBs in 2021 draft he likes Tanner Morgan but “certainly not in that top group.”

If Morgan is a Junior next year and not in that top group why would he leave early?

Jordan Love wasn't "in the top group" and still got picked first round. There are probably a clear cut top 3 that will be top 10 picks. That next group usually goes mid to late first.

I like the job all 6 of them did last year.
John Michael Schmitz might be my favorite but then I have always liked guys who are a little undersized but make up for it with being "growly".😘

One of the people who commented on this video is the mom of a 2022 recruit Lucas Heyer. I looked him up. He is a Hill Murray Sophomore and is 6'5" 305 lbs (with a 3.9 GPA). That is a big sophomore. That made me want to look more. He apparently has already received scholarship offers from Arizona State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Minnesota, and Nebraska. He is also being recruited by Iowa.

Wow. That is an impressive list for a HS sophomore. Think about this kid having 2-3 more years to build muscle and mature. THis kid might be on that short list.

I can’t see him playing TE at 6’1” and 290 pounds. There has to be another position in his future.

Edit: I see he is listed at TE on Rivals but DT on Star Tribune headline. I assume he is a DT recruit.

Wow heavy on the defense this year. Only one OL recruit so far. These classes are not very balanced.

Isnt he only a junior? He will be much bigger most likely before he sees campus so he could be a TE/H-back.

That said though most likely D-line :)
