Sounds like Gophers will hire Mike Sanford as OC.

Sources: Minnesota is hiring Mike Sanford Jr. as offensive coordinator. Brings head coach experience at WKU and assistant experience at Notre Dame, Boise and Stanford to P.J. Fleck's staff.
Simon named Co-offensive Coordinator as well.
Good. He deserves it after the Outback Bowl. Maybe he's not ready to be the man yet, but he did a great job.

Did not see that coming. Hopefully that's good, I mean he's a good coach from what I've read, hope it fits in with what's been working well.
Happy for Simon as well (not that I have a clue how co-coordinators is a thing or works).

My guess is one will scheme and one will call plays on game day.

Read this comment about Sanford elsewhere. Thoughts?
The fact that he's only 37 and he's been an OC at 3 stops and a head coach kind of raises some red flags, and that he took what Brohm built at WKU and got fired after only two years is another big question mark. How many places fire a coach after two seasons?
Currently under construction.

It doesnt bother me in the least. He wont be changing anything offensively (he will use the same scheme PJ already has but add some wrinkles at best) and will have Simon there to also help the transition. Plus, from the sounds of it he might be being brought in for recruiting as much as anything. (he recruits guys in Texas and California)

He is no more of a risk than Simon would be. Simon has exactly 1 game of calling plays under his belt (though he does call the plays for scrimmages and such) and people were willing to give him the job based on that without even knowing how much he was even involved in setting it all up.

PJ isnt going to hire someone who will hurt his brand...if he hired this guy there is something about him that clicked with what PJ was looking for.

My take is that Sanford will be here 1 or 2 years and then get a HC job. Then Simon will take over. Thus the co coordinator setup.

Yeah, didn’t think Simon was ready but will groom him and either he or Sanford will leave.

Works for me, Simon showed he knows his stuff in the bowl game, so let him learn and grow some more with a guy who I've read is solid in recruiting QBs. Multiple benefits to be had

Sanford hasn’t been anywhere for more than a couple of years so I’d expect the same.

No inside knowledge, but this seems like it might be the best case scenario. Hopefully as co-coordinators they work together seamlessly - all in the best interest of the team - with no serious disagreements or personal conflicts between them. With Fleck in charge I seriously doubt this would ever be the case, but the potential for disagreement and/or conflict underlying the surface seems to be a possibility. Hope this is just a little ado over nothing....

If there is an issue with the Co-coordinator situations, Fleck just makes one of them Coordinator and move on. It doesn’t have to be a problem for long.

I don't think there will be any issues. In fact I bet Simon knew the score before the bowl game and Fleck had names in mind to give him.

I had seen that clip on Twitter, I love the part about wearing the shirt until Nike sees it...

The video of her speaking to the team earlier in the season is also amazing, what a great kid and I'm so impressed by how Fleck connects with individuals of all ages at that individual level. He manages to get fans of other programs to be fans of MN, even in the same conference. Total used car salesman.

All of this not only helps with recruiting student athletes, but also with recruitng the parents. As a parent, who ultimatley has the most influence (theoretically), why would you not want your son to be under the guidance of this culture?

Impressed every single day by Fleck and the entire program and how far we've come from 3 years ago.

One thing I noticed while watching a game early in the season, but I can't say with 100% accuracy that they did it all year, but I noticed during a game that the ballcarrier for the Gophers always handed to ball to an official after play. They never seemed to drop it on the ground and they never seemed to even just toss it to an official.

Again I haven't checked youtube to see if I could find exceptions, but this seems like one of the "little things" that a coach like Fleck would teach and I think it's awesome.

THE BALL IS THE PROGRAM.

It's number one philosophy of Fleck and his staff. We protect the ball at all costs on offense and we do anything we can in order to get it on defense. The ball is the program.

That carries over to all aspects in practice and handing the ball to an official.

I agree with JC65 here, and I think it would be fair to add that no one does anything to the level that PJ does. What Kill did may have been similar, but it is not on the same level.

Most of the time. Tyler did not do this on a couple of his big catches in the Outback Bowl. He was practicing using the ball as a top and trying to get it to spin on its end on the turf.

Good luck to him! Coming off an All American season and with a history of season-ending injuries it makes perfect sense to make the money while you can.

I'll miss him but I wish him all the luck (except when he's playing against the Vikings).

Well he's 22 now (or will be by the draft, can't remember his birthday) so he's essentially a senior. For draft purposes it's probably better to go out after an all-american season where he was fully healthy all year too. Especially at his age, which is weird to say.

Yeah but if he was 4th or lower he might as well come back because most likely it is the injuries that are worrying people. That or his size, which isnt gonna change ;)

Either way, what a great young man. Remember he was super close to being kicked out of the University until his dad stepped in and called "nonsense" on his son's involvement in the disastrous situation on campus. Him, and others, if my recollection is correct. Also, kudos to him for not walking out and starting over somewhere else.

When you look back, it sure is refreshing to have the program that we have today, rather than the trash heap that we had, on multiple levels.

He was close to being kicked out because (iirc) someone named him as being there (one of the players kicked out I think) and as such he was suspended with the rest. (as he should have been while it was investigated) Once it was looked into he was cleared because the claim was ridiculous. His fathers whining had little to do with it. I respect his father, and totally understand it but I am not giving him much credit as to why his son was cleared. (if I have the facts staright...if I dont then I will fully mea culpa)

Thankfully justice for him was done. The rest of those guys can die in a fire for all I care. You are absolutely correct in your second statement...Kill and his crew had zero control over the players and created a dumpster fire. TC then crapped the bed when he was in charge. Those guys were not ready for prime time.

I think the hindsight is that Kill ran things pretty tight and kept things between the lines... TC was just a coordinator elevated to head fb coach who didn't realize that player management was as big a part of his job as drawing up X's and O's.

Agreed on the player management part (relative to TC). But I’ll also stipulate that Kill never achieved the success Mason achieved. Because of his schtick, I think Kill gets more credit than warranted, he followed an incompetent buffoon in Brew & simply looked good in comparison ☝️In contrast, PJ is the real deal in all aspects of coaching & running a D1 🏈 program 👍 Thank God (finally after 50 years)

Not sure I buy that the blame is entirely on Claeys for what happens in his first (and only) year where he inherited the roster mostly built by Kill.

I'm content to let the past stay in the past. The bottom line here is we have a football program on the upswing led by a lead by a really good coach. 90% of the D1 football programs in the country would gladly trade places with us.

Agreed. The program is in good shape, and heading the right direction. When was the last time you could honestly say you expected the Gophers to start the following season ranked in the top 20?

I was curious so I looked it up, the last time the Gophers were in the AP top 25 pre-season was 2004 at 25, prior to that, 1969. (They did receive votes several years) While I'm certainly not going to say that the AP poll actually counts at the end of the year, it's definitely a good guideline for what's expected of the team by the sportswriters at least.

On the field sure but off the field not so much. I have heard he was a proponent of letting "the boys be boys" so to speak. Difference was the players respected him more so they at least stayed in line enough not to get in trouble by him. TC on the other hand they didnt give a lick for when it came discipline and well...

Kill would have crashed and burned sooner or later...hell the buzzards were already swirling the last two years he was here. (most of it unfair but that is our local media for you) Lest we forget that there were accusations that his players had zero respect for women around campus and that he didnt do anything to punish those that acted as such. I just dont think he realized you cant let stuff like that go in a major market.

But it’s okay to let it go elsewhere?

I understand what you are saying, but PJ should be an example of what all coaches everywhere at every level should aspire to do. They should be doing more than simply coaching and creating good athletes; but helping to create good students, good ambassadors of their sport, and most importantly good human beings.

Of course it is more fun when your team is winning and doing well, but there are life lessons to be learned, and imho those are the most important things those kids are going to leave campus with.

No I 100% agree with you. I was just saying what happened with TC as coach started with what Kill was allowing when he was coach.

PJ (as far as we can tell) is trying to turn these men into great people. That is why football is one part of a larger culture he is putting into place. Its why I respected him even when he wasnt the coach I wanted for the team.

Agreed, not trying to re-litigate the past but the program's culture at that time didn't just form the second TC became the head coach.
<GophDogFan> yep, so sad... you have a new moment, when your uncle gets mad because you got the best of him. the last straw was when i told him that UND's hockey program is like crystal pepsi: Nobody every liked it.

Yeah, you’re probably right Trix☝️TC inherited Kills players & Kills culture, it wasn’t all bad, but certainly not run tight enough, TC takes the helm, focuses on what he knew well (evidently) x’s & o’s and the rest is history. I find it both funny & ironic that TC didn’t care for PJ when he was an assistant at NI...what comes around goes around (typically)

My wife used to work for a department that interacted with new students including the athletes (into 2014) and we have friends who still do so and manage some of the programs surrounding new students. Now, each year, a new football player or two will do something off putting, questionable, or inappropriate. Based on coach's response, here's what I'd say:

- Mason: Can't remember, but was never a discussion
- Brewster: Was a dumpster fire, no desire to manage or discipline beyond required levels, probably lucky nothing significant happened here
- Kill: Cared, had boundaries, addressed issues as notifed of something - dealt with the issue 1-1 with the player
- Claeys: Not around to know in this example, but public forum tells us what we need to know
- Fleck: Proactive, reaches out to the department to ask they keep his staff informed, promises exlempary behavior, has staff who actively manage the "social" part of his "athletically, socially, spiriturally" speak. This past fall, one new player did something requiring Fleck's staff be informed - the entire team wrote individual apology notes.

Here's where Fleck differentiates himself. Our other coaches coached football and built athletes with some focus on building students. Fleck builds men / adults leveraging the bond of football. His regimen is not about just a successfull football product, it's about preparing 18-22 year for life. It sounds like a bunch of "speak" when he talks, but it's not.

If I had a student athlete, I would 100% want them to play for Fleck - no quesiton. I would trust him to do what's right and not compromise integrity for success.

I'm guessing that new player got a rather stern "talking to" from the more tenured members of the team.
