I agree this offense is clearly above average, especially so when the line starts getting a push and the RBs finally get going. The D is another story but hopefully they play up to the better opponents.
The D gave up 3 points so I am not sure they are who I would be worried about even against bad teams.

You can’t just ignore the first 4 games. Not world beaters and several of those teams moved the ball against this Gopher D

I am not but you also cant ignore that the defense was better yesterday (and last week) than it was the first three games either. Its a work in progress but it is definitely playing better now than it was a month ago.

Whether that holds we shall see.

I thought Purdue moved the ball fairly well considering they were forced to use the backup QB and didn’t have their star position player. That was concerning to me.

Not to hand out excuses, but PJ did say that they were prepared for one quarterback and when the backup came in, they basically went into base defense. Same type of thing that happened to the Vikings when the Bears lost their starter and the backup picked them apart. Plus the backup didn’t move the ball very well until we were up by 21 and PJ said they were playing more of a prevent defense.

And I thought it was pretty obvious the Gophers were in "bend but dont break" mode. And it wasnt like Sindelar and Moore were tearing the D up before that.

The Gophers have allowed 27 pts/game but only 21 by the defense. They are 26th in yards allowed/game (314) and quite a few of the yards were given up the last 2 games with the games mostly under control.

That said they'll need to play better - their SOS is 88th overall so they should be 5-0 given how many players they returned. Nebraska regardless of injuries should prove a better test for their defense while the Gophers should have very little difficulty moving the ball. A lot can happen the next 3 weeks before their first real real test vs. PSU.
Currently under construction.

I could see this team going 3-4 the rest of the way or going 5-2 as top end with 4-3 being my legitmate stretch hope.
Only "must win" remaining on the schedule is Rutgers. = 1-0
Then you get into some "should win" but won't win all: MD, Nebraska, NU = 2-1 (possible to steal all 3 if on our game)
Then you get into the "steal one" group: Iowa, PSU, WI = 1-2 (Euphoria would be 2-1 here)

25 in the coaches poll
More importantly, #26 in the AP Poll... whatever that means...
(Legit, the AP Top 25 listed us as #26, it wasn't just us first in "others getting votes" - no one is sure why)

EDIT: They have since updated the poll to only show the top 25 and have moved us down to others reeciving votes. Maybe a joke by a MN fan who releases the poll?)

I just hope the trophy case isn't bare after a 5-0 start...

The Bell I care the least about, and would be difficult.

So if we can go 4-3 and get either the Axe or the Pig, I will be pretty happy. I'd be more happy with the Axe than I would with the Pig :)

I agree with the analysis. Rutgers is a dumpster fire and one of the worse teams. If we can beat Iowa and go 2-1 in the "Should Win", I would take it. 9-3

Wisconsin has weaknesses, but they look damn good.

I'd take 8-4 with the remaining schedule and call it a damn good season...should bring a pretty good bowl and lots of bowl practices!!!! (Lol, that's an old topic that went on and on about how important they are)

Sure, but even in Hockey I'd rather beat Wisco than UND. It's fine that others feel differently, but people were borderline offended that I'd rather beat Wisco.

I'm happy when we beat Wisconsin in anything. If the debate team beats them I'll do a tiger woods fist pump.

Well ya I hate them in every sport as most on here know. I hate losing to the Brewers even which people think is just meh.

But the energy and intensity of games against UND when you are in the arena is a different level and it's not really close.

More often than not. But man, that Irmen PS goal against Becky... I was a student and I think that's the loudest I've ever heard that building, possibly any rink I've been in.

The "problem" was that Becky sucked for a few years recently, and people stopped to care a bit. I was totally fine with it and enjoyed every minute of it.

I still get up for every badger game. And ya them sucking did hurt. But at the same time people said the rivalry with UND would die by not playing them.

Yet, every time they come it's the hottest ticket and loudest game of the year.

Overall, not for every individual, UND is the most hated and intense rivalry for Gopher hockey fans.

Yeah but that’s mostly because the North Dakota fans have nothing better to do and come in droves (and the geography of the B1G kinda screws up opponent fan travel). I’d be more curious to know if the players see them as more of a rival than the B1G opponents or in state schools (esp Duluth).

edit: didn’t realize what thread I was in lol, hopefully the D shows up against NE and we remain undefeated. Should be doable
<GophDogFan> yep, so sad... you have a new moment, when your uncle gets mad because you got the best of him. the last straw was when i told him that UND's hockey program is like crystal pepsi: Nobody every liked it.

It would be a long time ago. If I had to guess probably before my dad was born. The last time they were undefeated for a season was 1941 and they were 8-0 so that would be my bet though 60,61 or 67 are good bets as well.

Ah, good find. Looks like 4 non-cons, which I'd give an asterisk to, but then 2 BigTen wins on the road. So that was pretty solid then. B1G road wins are hard to come by, especially lately.

Getting to 6-0 sure would be nice this weekend. When was the last time we went 6-0?

The 7th game was a tough loss.
Up by 21 heading into the 4th quarter.
That year we lost to the only ranked teams we played, all 3. Mason could rarely get that elusive upset win.

Huh I forgot they got that far before losing. I had season tickets then...
Memory is the first to go they say...

The Mason years were fun...but so many parallels between them all makes it hard to differentiate them sometimes. Plus I had student season tickets for quite some time because of the plans they had back then ;)

The 2003 year was a good one but many a fan around here was not as high on it as others were. Even the Axe game didnt bring a ton of joy because that BADger team wasnt exactly stellar. (though I didnt care when I was at the game)

The Michigan game was a killer, but if they just come back the next week and play 4 quarters instead of 3 they have 11 wins and go somewhere way nicer than El Paso for the Bowl. (and Mason is probably still coach unless he retires)

Nah he could get 1...then would also lose one that made you bash your head against the wall. Like in 2000 when we lost at home to Ohio but went to the Horseshoe and beat tOSU for only the second time on the road in my Dad's lifetime.

Backup QB that year Travis Cole, who was the QB in that game, was in one of my classes. Nice kid :)

That was my freshman year and my family was in town visiting (like aunt uncle and cousins too) and we all went to the game. They are badger fans....yeah....didnt hear the end of that one that night. But we took the axe back that year which was nice, only to have it leave forever thereafter lol

I was at home that night listening to the game on the radio and I wasn't surprised. Mason did have some nice wins though - road wins at UMi, OSU and PSU, maybe 2 at PSU? One painful b.s. loss at PSU as well. Unfortunately there too many wtf moments such as that Michigan game, the blocked punt Bucky loss, some very lame NC losses, and too often neglecting to run a competent defense.
Currently under construction.

Michigan State was ranked #15 the next week and we lost. (had one loss at the time to LaTech) Iowa was ranked #20 and we lost. Wikipedia has other teams ranked as well but I think they all were out after we beat them so I dont think it really matters. (and there is no way Indiana was ranked when we played them so yeah those things are off)

That was the year...just needed 15 good minutes out of two games. (preferably both but either would be fine)

Second best year was 1999. 1 play away (in 2 different games!!!!) from the Rose Bowl. I always counter with that when someone says "Havent been relevant in 50 years". If one play is the difference then you are relevant. Tyrone Carter was the man!

I was at the game and it was a blast, right up until it wasn't. Quite the collapse against the wrong team at the wrong time.

The other massive collapse I attended was the Badger game at the dome in 2003ish. I think we had a big lead and it fell apart on a blocked punt deep in our end. For some reason the Badger band was not only allowed to be at the dome, they played the 5th Quarter ON OUR FIELD after the game

I had never seen such a dumshit move by our AD as to allow the Badger band to march on our home field. Totally embarrassing.

Our family was there in a suite. I have one cousin who is a Ugly Helmet grad. You can imagine the beating he took for three quarters only to roast us all in the end. I still look back sometimes and think it must have been a bad dream.

Played on a Friday night, just in case the Twins advanced to the AL Championship Series. Looked like a decent bet when the Twins went up 1-0 on the Yankees in the ALDS too...

Speaking of massive collapses:

Following the 2003 heartbreak, I also felt inclined to fly out to Ann Arbor to witness the 2004 heartbreak in which we coughed up another 4th quarter lead. https://www.espn.com/college-football/g ... =242830130

Silver lining: I got to meet tDon (and bumped into Phil Kessel) the following morning while taking in a USNTDP hockey game.

Close second: I was at the 2000 MicronPC.com Bowl (stationed in Miami, FL at the time). Up 24-0...and against all odds we found a way to lose. :chainsaw: At least I didn't pay to see that $#1t-show - got free tickets through the USO.

Honorable mention: treated my family to the Axe game at the Dome in 1999. Lost in OT by a field goal. :censored:

Yeah, I think I was at 2004 game in AA, where we had a solid lead, but then came back the next year and saw them win. Clock went out and kept time on the field. Busted a big run and kicked a FG for the win.

The Sconnie game in 99 cost us The Rose Bowl. Ron Dayne got dinged up and we were out playing them til Jimmy Wyrick fell down giving up a td to tie. If he doesn't do that (or Thomas Hammer doesn't fumble against OSU) and Mase is never fired.

Lots of media talk about if this team could be 8-0 heading into PSU week. I really appreciate Fleck's approach of they're 0-0 in the Nebraska season. I don't see the next 3 games as gimmee games including Rutgers if we do happen to be 6-0 heading into that game. That makes Rutgers a bit of a trap game. Would love to finally get the W over Maryland.

Considering how close the first few games were it seems silly to look ahead at 8-0.

6-0 should be the only thing. This weekend is a big game for the Gophers.

Agreed, this is a very big weekend for the Gophers. The team is quietly 5-0, really low expectations from the majority of the fan base (per usual, and not completely undeserved). However, the team is 5-0 at this point, with a good chance to get to 6-0. Ski-U-Mah!

I'll be watching Gopher Football tonight over the Wild home opener. Probably flip but football is priority. I'd rather watch a winner.
