That is a very freshmen like move...Pitts should know better than that she has been around long enough. If you have an issue with how you were disciplined dont make it public.

Re: Gophers -- Other Sports
Like everything, there are 3 sides to the story-- Whalen's , the players, and the truth. I'm sure Whalen can't say too much about it for student privacy reasons. Pitts can say whatever she wants and Whalen really can't respond, so the player gets the advantage on this one. Lindsay is old school and things have changed since she was in college, so she is getting an eye opening experience this year.Cowgirl wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17 11:10 amShe displayed inappropriate “body language” in a game. What does that mean? Flipping someone off maybe?frozen4champs wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17 9:54 amFrom what I have gathered from various reports, Whalen pulled her out of a game a week or so ago and benched her for the 4th quarter. Pitts stayed there after the game and did not go the the locker room, and people had to go out to find her. Things then have gone downhill since then.

Re: Gophers -- Other Sports
Any chance Whalen "over-reacted"? I don't want that to sound worse than it is - but given how pampered athletes are today would a more seasoned coach of used the same disciplinary tactic for whatever it is Pitts did?

I think Whalen probably is following Geno's example. He is so spot on with this take.

Good find. I bet that is exactly it. Sadly it wasn't just the player who got disciplined that has the problem.YoungEagle wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17 1:45 pmI think Whalen probably is following Geno's example. He is so spot on with this take.

So Geno is viewed as being at the top of his profession?
Yes. I'd say he is the gold standard.
Any bets on him taking Destiny Pitts @ UConn?

I would say the viewpoint of expecting athletes - at all levels - to act respectably and be a good example for the younger generation is spot on. It is a privilege to play D1 athletics. Act like it.Bladepuller wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17 3:50 pmSo Geno is viewed as being at the top of his profession?

This is of course speculation as we don’t know specifically what this player did. As alluded to above I doubt this one incident has been the only issue between player and coach but a culmination of events.
I’m all for accountability for athletes - at all levels. (So fire the entire MLB if you need to
So sick of the entitled athlete mentality. They need a dose of reality and morality. Sports sure don’t seem to be about fun anymore do they.

Re: Gophers -- Other Sports
I think we can all relate to having your boss/parents discipline you for what you perceive to be no reason. It is frustrating. And I know I probably showed lots of attitude when I was in my early 20s when it happened. You feel wronged and it sucks.
That said, suck it up! You dont like it take it up with the coaches after the game. (or the school if you think you were really wronged) You dont quit like a baby. I doubt Whalen verbally abused her or mistreated her so to quit during the season is a childish move and reflects poorly on her as a person. Why should anyone trust you if you are just going to take your ball and go home any time someone dares tell you to follow the rules?

Those of you who know me, & the reason my user name is what it is, understand why I also read fishing boards.
I refuse to post on them, at least about fishing.
Better to cite your source than a cryptic inference about insider knowledge.
I would expect LW to expect a lot from her guards & if DP had an issue with the expectations LW had for her.....
Oh well. Bye DP.

Kudos to the Gopher Softball coach for keeping the things that Allister got started going.,The University of Minnesota Gophers are entering the 2020 season ranked top-10 in five preseason polls.
Traditionally NCAA softball has recognized both the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and the ESPN.com/USA Softball polls which have the Gophers No. 8 and No. 7, respectively.
Softball America has the Gophers at No. 6 in its second year with a preseason poll. FloSoftball also has the Gophers slotted at No. 6 while D1Softball pegged Minnesota at No. 7 in its first year.
This is the sixth straight season the Gophers have started the season in the Top-25. Last year, the Maroon and Gold ended the year No. 8 in both major polls, the highest to end a season in program history.

Re: Gophers -- Other Sports
Is this last note correct? Sounds like the opposite of the Twins problems across the river. Could be a good squad.
Meyer, a junior righthander from Woodbury, has been named to five preseason All-America teams. He is projected as a first-round draft choice in Major League Baseball’s amateur draft and has been called the top pitcher and top draft prospect in the Big Ten Conference.
Among the talented group of pitchers are juniors Patrick Fredrickson and Sam Thoresen and sophomore J.P. Massey. Joining them is redshirt sophomore Drake Davis, who sat out last season as a transfer from Arizona State. Baseball America has listed all four as Top 20 draft prospects.

Re: Gophers -- Other Sports
Dunno much about Davis but Thoreson, Frederickson, and Meyer are all high end pitchers when healthy. Especially if Thoreson hasn't gotten messed with by the current pitching coach staff after some of the adjustments he made with his private (Driveline style) coaches. That is what caused some early headaches for him last year.Bonin21 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13 4:42 pmIs this last note correct? Sounds like the opposite of the Twins problems across the river. Top 20 draft prospects. So you're telling me five pitchers on the Gopher roster are listed as first rounders?
Is it top 20 prospects playing college baseball? Top 20 pitching prospects playing college baseball?
Something doesn't add up.

Re: Gophers -- Other Sports
Maybe in the midwest? Or conference? No chance they're all top 20 overall when you factor in high school kids etc. I've heard people projecting Meyer first round and Thoreson in the compensation/second-fourth rounds (depending on how his control is, because when he's on he's nasty but he has a tendency to get himself in trouble with a lot of free passes). Frederickson probably a 9-10th rounder depending on how his season goes. He got absolutely rocked in the Cape Cod league last year to the tune of a 9+ ERA in 25ish innings. Hopefully his shoulder is recovered because i know it was bugging him last season. He doesn't bring the velo hype that Meyer and Thoreson do (sits 89-91, can reach up to 93), but he's definitely got the frame to be able to add a couple MPH with the proper adjustments.
Edit: just saw the part you added about top 20 prospects in conference. That makes more sense.

Just for fun here is a breakdown of the AD's incentives. As you might have seen me tweet, Regent Rosha thought that in future deals there should be some focused on attendance and revenues instead of academics and competitive success. Also interesting note that there is a bonus for playing in the CFP, playing in the CFP semifinal and playing in the CFP championship game... so I think playoff expansion is coming by the end of this contract

Re: Gophers -- Other Sports
Sounds like she got a six figure raise to go to Ole Miss and was offered $245k down there. Hard to turn down that kind of raise especially given you only had a year contract. Bummer to lose her with the success they were having.
Re: Gophers -- Other Sports
And I lose my one connection to the Gophers' softball program, however distant: In high school I played on the same (first!) line with her father, Larry.

Sounds like tons of drama behind the scenes and the players were not sad to see her go.
This is from a former player who quit and decided to transfer to Syracuse for next season.

Excellent choice. She coached my daughter in a number of clinics. Great person.

Gophers for the second time (2009) have the #1 recruiting class in volleyball. Seems like they return a decent amount from the Final Four team last year.

Re: Gophers -- Other Sports
This isn't really "other" sports as much as "all" sports - but anyway.
Link to Coyle's presentation to the Board of Regents this week. It's not very useful without the context of the discussion, which isn't surprising. Doesn't say anything about cost saving actions outside of the obvious. Doesn't speak to any thoughts on when sports will come back (that would be tied to slide 8 which lacks the context - and the various revenue losses being tied to continued delays in things starting across the U).

Yeah, the stadium and atmosphere was electric. Mostly full by kickoff and almost all Gopher fans. The score made it seem closer, but we definitely dominated from the opening TD by Bateman and then the pick off by Winfield, to the game ending pick.Beauner wrote: ↑Tue May 12 8:02 amEnded with the Penn State and Auburn wins last night. Good for Max. He worked his ass off the last couple years. Wouldn't shock me to see him in a Marlins uniform this season. His fastball/slider combo is already big-league ready and could make for a great bullpen arm now while he's developing a third offering.

That's awesome for Ben
Max!! Really too bad he didn't get another season with the Gophers, would have been fun to see what they could have done.
Draft position and success are fascinating, especially in baseball and hockey. Speaking of MN players drafted it's crazy to think Jack Morris was a 5th rounder in '76; Ozzie Smith and Wade Boggs were also in the '76 draft....in the 7th round!

Had it in my head that Noel Jenke had been a top ten pick, but he was picked 13th in the 1969 draft. Never made the show, but played four years in the NFL. Great athlete out of Owatonna that was a three sport letterman at the "U" (baseball, hockey and football) and drafted in all three.

Max Meyer actually does have a brother named Ben, too, to make it more confusing.
And I don't think he is the Ben Meyer that played on the Gopher baseball team a few years ago...

Yeah, Ben Meyer the former Gopher is a different family. Though incidentally also was drafted by Miami and had a short run with the big leagues with them. In Colorado's farm system now.

It’s another “Minnesota Day” on big ten network, mostly your usual staples except tonight they have two games I haven’t seen since they were live.
The 2004 music city bowl in which we beat effing Alabama, Marion Barber was unstoppable.
And shockingly, they are actually airing a game from the 97 basketball season which everyone tries to forget. Bobby Jackson leads the club to an OT win in Indiana

I forget how long it was but Alabama had gone something like 10 or 11 years without losing to a BigTen team after that 2004 loss to the Gophers. It was a really fun trivia question.Laxref wrote: ↑Thu Jun 18 11:00 amIt’s another “Minnesota Day” on big ten network, mostly your usual staples except tonight they have two games I haven’t seen since they were live.

Not Gopher related (yet), but Iowa is cutting Men's Gymnastics and Tennis, and Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving.
Probably the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure just about every college will be cutting multiple non-revenue sports before this is over.
