He'll make a lot of money in Europe. Might as well get a heads start on it.

Huh. I would have thought his best chance at an NBA gig would have been to come back and show improvement in some of the weaker parts of his game. Well, good luck to him.

Yeah if he goes undrafted then long road to the NBA. He could come back and be a focal point.

Losing him and Muephy hurt

He isnt an NBA player...he doesnt have the game for it. He might get a cup of (no pun intended) coffee or something but he is a Euro Player like many Gophers before him. I wish him luck. He can still finish his degree and I am sure his dad will encourage him to.

Not the decision I would have made but I am not him so I wish him luck. I hope I am wrong and he does make the NBA some day but overall I just hope he has a good career no matter what he does.

On to next season!

Definitely puzzling, I heard he is close to graduating already. At least he stayed in Minnesota to play college hoops... pretty sure they don't make the tournament last year without him.

Players should want to dominate at one level before moving up. BUT, if the environment for whatever reason does not fit their needs for whatever reason moving on is always best.

Best of luck to him.

Sounds like there wasn't a lot of belief another year in college would elevate his game enough to matter from a draft/NBA perspective. So, rather than wait a year for not much gain, Amir decided to go now and get paid what he can get paid. Another year older to play in the G league or wherever wasn't going to help him either.

I don't get that decision at all.
Unless a team has said they will give him a 2-way contract for the G League if he signs with them when he doesn't get drafted, it seems like a really poor plan.

Best of luck to him in his future. Wish he would have stuck it out one more year here.
I wish he would come back but I understand why he is leaving. He can work on his game in the G-league or overseas and he will get paid for it. Why play another year in college and not get paid any money? Especially if he is close to graduating. How much more can his draft stock improve by playing another year? Sure he might improve part of his game, but he will be 23 in next years draft.

Yeah he has less than a semester's worth of credits to graduate IIRC.

I mean I guess it is possible the Kings told him some good news when he worked out for them yesterday but I doubt it. Maybe he figures if he is going to be playing in Europe anyways might as well get it started now. If he is leaving to make mediocre money in the G-League then...well...yeah.

His dad is smart enough to talk to the right people I doubt anyone is fleecing them with big dreams.

The G League pays nothing...he could finish his degree (not playing basketball) and get a better job out of college unless he gets an NBA call up. the G-League salary last year was 35K. (for the 5 month season) I mean sure that is nice for 5 months on average but for the year that is pretty meh. I work with people at my catering company who do more than that.

The chances he gets a nice two-way deal arent likely. If he is doing this for money he might want to retake Econ ;)

But if he's playing well in the g league he can get signed by a team. That can't happen if he is playing in college.

That is a big risk to take...

I am not saying dont go G-League I am just saying if he is doing it "to get paid" he got bad advice. It will be at least a year before he improves his game enough to get noticed. He has lots of deficiencies.

Moneywise? Uh because he can finish his degree and make more at a real job than he can in the G-League?

I feel like you are assuming I am saying something I am not. There is nothing wrong with going to the G League, but you dont do it to get paid because the pay is nothing. I mean it is low end AHL money. If someone advised him that way they should be sued for malpractice.

If teams are telling him he has a legit chance to catch on in the next couple years the G-League is the place to be. Otherwise not sure he would be benefiting himself long term. To me it makes more sense to leave school for long term gain not short term. Since I dont see him being an NBA player I think there are better choices.

Now all of that is contingent on him not getting drafted. If he does then the scenario changes.

He would be better off staying in college and starting his Advanced Degree. He'll need every bit of his education in a few years.

Reality is, he's going to finish his undergrad (likely) and take the risk on getting a two-way deal in an effort to play ball. He doesn't see upside in returning to college to better his position as it likely won't, so take the risk now while he's a year younger.

It's a gamble, maybe a bad one, but it's a gamble that isn't any worse than waiting a year (from a basketball perspective). He could stay and get a year or so closer to a graduate degree or go, give it a whirl, and move on to a "real" job if it doesn't work out.

I don't think it's as short sighted as some think from a pure baseketball perspective. He's chasing a dream.

It isnt short sighted, it might end up being the wrong decision but only he will know that. The only way it might be short sighted is if he is doing it for money because most likely, barring a massive knee injury, the money would be the same next year as this year. I mean before the end of the season he wasnt exactly lighting the world on fire. In crunch time he stepped up though big time. Next years team around him would be better than last years so he could have really stood out.

But other than that there is no reason to rip him for it...I wish him luck but I dont expect to hear much about him 3 years from now.

It's possibly short-sighted from a developmental standpoint. I can't imagine whatever level he plays at next season (it won't be the NBA) is going to be more challenging and competitive than a Big Ten schedule, half of their NC games and the spotlight of the NCAA tournament - which they likely make next season if he's on the team.

Looking to add point guard depth for next season, the Gophers landed a commitment Thursday night from three-star 2019 Florida point guard Bryan "BJ" Greenlee. Greenlee, a 6-foot senior from the Rock School in Gainesville, Fla., had one other Power Five scholarship offer from Iowa

Gophers win 84-79 in Italy against the Stellazzurra Basketball Academy, whoever they are.
Gophers were down 40-43 at the half. I have no idea what that means and if we should feel great about a win, concerned about being down at the half...

No clue what kind of competition this is.

It's the first exhibition game after not having much practice time, I wouldn't read much into it. A lot of missed 3's and FT's for the Gophs who were down almost 20 pts. early and came back for the W. Some good and bad takeaways.

Its so cute you stole this take from ghole. At least give the poster credit who posted it first. (you quoted it after all on ghole)

Carlson wasnt coming here and the other guy most people have never even heard of. Save your outrage for when Suggs and Garcia say no and then pray Mashburn says yes.

(I dont think we are getting any of them...but if we do most of the out of state guys are as good or better than the local guys who everyone pretends to know anything about)

I wasn't expecting Calrson to commit here among the top players but hurts he goes to BADgers.

Suggs sounds like a heavy favorite to Gonzaga.

Dawson Garcia (5 star from Prior Lake) is taking an official visit to the U this weekend. Also there is steam about Mashburn Jr. possibly picking the Gophers.

As with all recruiting news take it with a grain on Mashburn...but I like Garcia taking an official. Recruits only have so many officials they can take so him using one here is nice. Doesnt mean he will come here but it is a sign he is interested.

There is some more steam on the Mashburn front...apparently he said it is down to us and Cal and the insiders seem to think its a lock. Also we might pick up a commit today in Martice Mitchellthough he makes the announcement at 2. He has size but he sounds rather raw.

https://247sports.com/player/martice-mitchell-46057210/

One of the Ghole guys who does tend to be locked in with recruiting said from what he is hearing we should be getting:

Mitchell
Mashburn Jr.
Garcia

That would be a pretty good class so far. Sure the "but the Minnesota kids went to Sconnie" crowd will whine but they know as much as I do which is what I read. (i.e. not much) As always though...recruiting info is a crap shoot so take it with a HUGE grain of salt.

Dawson Garcia would be a great addition. Some sites have him as a 5 star and some as a 4 star. The other player that interests me is Kerwin Walton. Guard from Hopkins who can really shoot the ball. Has offers from Arizona and UNC, but we were in on him early.

We dont have enough scholarships to get all 4 at the moment I dont think. Garcia is likely to commit before Walton (unless Garcia gets some ridiculous offer) so I dont see us getting both. If we did though even the Eeyore's of the world would have to be pleased.

According to Ghole Ryan James is hinting that Mashburn will commit on Thursday but Ryan James is hit or miss in my eyes.

Well that is the first domino...if the insiders are right a month from now we should have 2-3. If Garcia doesnt commit to Indiana on his official I would bet money he commits here right after.

Next up should be Mashburn Jr. If Pitino locks him down that would be another 4 star and a heckuva pick up.

Yeah he is somewhere between. He is a top 150 player (based a lot on size from what I can tell) so he is no slouch. He is a 4 year guy and a very solid pick up whether he is a 3 or 4.

247 has him as a 4 star but a 3 star on their composite which is I believe an aggregate. Look below his composite and you will see.

The Xavier one is interesting because Doogie has been crapping over this guy since yesterday because (according to him) Xavier didnt want him. Now the thing is, if you look on Xavier's staff you will see a familiar name. Said coach was Doogie's main source for Gopher basketball info. Doogie is obviously covering for him because Mitchell told him he isnt going there.

Doogie has a history of this...Fred Hoiberg should pay Doogie money for all the times he randomly threw his name out for jobs which got him raises or extensions. Doogie is helping his friend cover his butt cause they lost out on a recruit they wanted pretty badly.

It seems to be. The nice thing is the ealy signing period is next month and all 3 of these guys are setting themselves up to be early signees wherever they go. As long as that holds true there is no need to worry.

Doogie or his source? The coach is cool and all (and wish he was still here) but he is still using Doogie to spread BS about a recruit that spurned them. I stand by my statement.

Doogie I have never respected and his scoops are crap. He is clickbait nonsense.

I dont like Doogie (havent since he was a second rate loser on KFAN) and I certainly don't like what he represents. He pretends to be a fan of Gopher Sports but goes out of his way to spread lies and innuendo which does nothing but hurt the squads. Either that, or he is so damned gullible he falls for the same fake crap so often he should probably be under a physicians care. Either way he is an awful sports "journalist" and I wish he would fade away. His clickbait crap is nonsense.

I get it, he is trying to position himself as the next Reusse or Souhan but he doesnt have the stomach to troll on the level they do. He will sadly always have a job though because mediocre stations like SKOR will always need some clown like him to pretend to like Gopher sports then feed the trolls their Anti-Gopher stuff on the side. He doesnt even hide it well that he gives info to those guys to rail against the team on the air and my guess is you wont see a whole lot of nice things said about Gopher Basketball (barring a ridiculously awesome season) as long as Pitino is here because Doogie's source left.

tl;dr: Doogie isnt worth the bandwidth and is everything that is wrong with sports journalism today imho. YMMV.

Curry injured his other knee. Even if it is minor I dont foresee him playing much this season. Going forward til he graduates it is probably best to just assume he wont be a major contributor to the team.

Well if this was the first time I would probably agree with him...but Curry has never really recovered from his first injury and we honestly just never got to see what he could become. He had moments though...

(yes I know what you were doing...just preemptively arguing against that logic which will come)

Interesting stuff on Doogie, I’ve always wondered if he had some sort of agenda when reporting gophers news. Tough for Curry, seems like a good kid, hope for the best for him.

Mashburn sounds like he is announcing on the 14th. All signs are he is committing to the Gophers as all other targets the Gophers had for his spot seem to be going elsewhere. If that holds up, it is a HUGE pickup for Pitino. (and is easily as good as the two guys that went to Sconnie)

Things could change but right now it is looking good :)

4 star guard Jamal Mashburn has committed to the Gophers. Solid pick up by Pitino!

That was the one we wanted. That is awesome!

The guys on Ghole got the first two right...if they heard right Garcia should be next after his last official to I believe Indiana.

In one of the more bizarre exchanges I have seen in a while, a rumor was floated this morning that Garcia has eliminated Minnesota. A few people posted it on Ghole. When they were asked how they knew they intimated they got it from a pay site. They would not say which one. This lead to a 5 argument over the value of pay sites and whether info from pay sites should be posted. (including people ripping those that choose to pay for the information and calling them out for not sharing) No one would say who the site was or even what the rumor actually said. Finally someone mentioned it was Ryan James from Gopher Illustrated and he said it is coming down to Indiana and Marquette...though it doesnt seem like he gave any real info to back up his claim. Very strange.

I could see it being true for now, but until he commits somewhere I never much worry about it. I would have to think Marquette would be the leader in the clubhouse though since he didnt commit on his visit to Indiana.

Yeah cause if James is saying it I tend to believe it and since I know certain other posters lurk there looking for bad news I figured I would post it before they would. (even though I dont think losing him is the biggest deal ever) It wont be a secret very long and he was a person I mentioned as being the 3rd person in the class after Mashburn and Mitchell.

I also found the whole thing rather funny.

Season starts tonight! Too bad i don't have BTN+ to watch. Saw they are 20.5pt favorites tonight. That seems a bit high.

That was a pretty nice win. If they can make that many 3s every game they'll be a tough out.
