Was Iverson really capable? Didn't he get like 5pts/game here? I guess I don't remember him being much of an impact.

Neither really lived up to their potential, but Iverson was more than serviceable. Especially considering the whiffs we've had at that position since then. Other than Lynch and Oturu, I can't think of anyone who has even been decent.

Don't get excited about Holmgren. I'll be shocked if he ends up here. Weirder things have happened, but I don't think the legacy thing is nearly the bond that many of you appear to do.

Yeah, I've gotten to the point (especially after Garcia announced) where I am not expecting many local star BB players to go to the U.

Iverson was a decent backup...but I wouldnt call him capable. Just another in a long line of tall white dudes who couldnt hit a shot all alone underneath the basket that we seem to love.

As for Holmgren I couldnt tell you either way. I wouldnt bet on him coming here but I am hardly a recruiting guru. I am sure if he is waiting on a specific school to offer though they will at some point.

That would be my guess...and if he gets an offer like that it would be hard to pass up. Anyone who would expect him to locally (and would hate Pitino for it) are off base. If the Blue Bloods come calling no coach is going to keep him here.

That isnt a defense of Pitino (though I am sure Eeyore will say it is) I would have said the same for Tubby or Monson and will of the next coach. The chances of a local 5 star talent staying home are slim especially if the top schools come calling. Hell they are slim in most states not just here. Blue Bloods are Blue Bloods for a reason.

I thought I read somewhere that Holmgren is eyeing Gonzaga (along with Suggs).

Speaking of David Holmgren (Chet's dad), does anyone remember the 83-84 Gopher team (Holmgren wasn't on this team but he made me think of it). At that time I seem to remember reading they were the tallest team in college basketball. They had:

Jim Peterson: 6' 10"
John Shasky: 6' 11"
Paul VanDenEinde: 7' 0"
Mike Carpenter: 7' 2"

Well he just visited Gonzaga in October I believe...

Personally I dont get the appeal to wanting to go there but they do make deep runs.

I agree. Hard to find their games on TV as they are west coast. Plus....its Spokane!

Everyone knew this year would be a struggle, especially with a difficult non-conference schedule. Carr has not provided any sort of consistency and the team is often not on the same page. Gabe looks like he has not progressed from last year. Can't create space for his own shot. He is also missing open looks. Getting beat by Iowa away from home is understandable, but how they lost is concerning. Defensive assignments completely blown. Ball movement disappears and they settle for jumpers instead of attacking the basket.

Not going to lose anyone of importance for next season and they will add at least 2 high level recruits. I'm still on the fence about Pitino because I think he has a tough time keeping his players focused when they are struggling. If they can find an offensive identity and the young guys improve, it will have been a successful season.

What? The rouser was amazing and they almost cut away from it but were wise to cut back.

Yeah...their achilles heel is their age. They really do miss Coffey not just for the scoring but because right now they dont have anyone who can step and be the leader yet. You can definitely see though what the offense is like when we have a guard who can actually play the game is on the court. Carr even makes Hurt better

I dont think this is an NCAA team but I think they will make it close. If they are playing well at the end I think next year could be fun with the guys coming in. Problem is we will almost assuredly lose Oturo so who knows what will happen.

Murphy isn't big enough to play his style of game in the NBA anymore. And Coffey isn't polished enough from deep. I think Coffey will eventually get some time in the NBA. Murphy will be hard pressed to do so. Oturu is a true power forward/center and is developing some outside game. He's a better pro prospect than Murphy and in a bigger position if need than Coffey.

Murphy is not an NBA player...he is a good college player and nothing more. He has zero jump shot and is way too small to have any chance to get inside in the NBA. Coffey was a project which is why we all thought it kind of weird he was leaving...

Oturu is already projected as a Top 20-25 pick and he has already shown his game has improved from last year to this year. (quite significantly actually) Barring injury or him falling off the map the odds are he is gone. That could change obviously. If he bucks the trend and stays though...next year we have the potential to be VERY good.

I wonder how accurate those draft projections are in the late 1st round. It would suck to gamble and enter the draft to slide to 2nd round. I am not an NBA guy at all but IIRC the drop in contract from 1st to 2nd round is significant.

His size will make his projection pretty accurate. The fact that he seems to have developed a jump shot will only improve that.

Gophers crushing FIU...Oturu with 18 points and 19 rebounds. Gophs 21/22 at the line.

Oturu had a great game. 20 pts and 20 boards.
Team was 29/30 from the line. Crazy.

Oturu is one of the 3 best players in the conference. An argument could be made for him being the best.

Really? No snark intended, I haven’t watched much basketball this year. They seem to be playing well but I hear little chance of making the tourney.

Do I need to start watching or is this a mirage?

Oturu is worth watching. He's the best true big man they've had on campus maybe in my entire life.

As far as making the tournament, their schedule is certainly tough enough where if they win 18-19 games they will be pretty close to in, based on what I've been hearing. Before today's win, their NET ranking was 28. With a 6-5 record. The next worst record in the top 30 was 9-3 (Georgetown 29, Iowa 26, Michigan State 22, Michigan 16 all 9-3).

They (probably) aren't a tourney team but Oturu is the real deal. He will play in the NBA.

Big Ten is crazy strong again this year, which helps a lot. Gophers are currently projected to finish the regular season 16-14, which is still good enough to put them in the first four out. Boat Boy would be proud that they currently lead in the nation in Elite Loss %, which basically says even an elite team would be expected to lose 12 games against their schedule.

Carr has played a lot better recently, which is the big key. They've got two guys in Oturu and Kalscheur who are great if you get them the ball in the right position and absolutely horrendous if they have to create for themselves. If Carr can be effective, that opens up a lot of space for them.

Carr had 3 straight bad possessions and Purdue hits a prayer to tie it. When they started doubling Carr he kind of lost his mojo.

1.2 left Purdue with the ball and a chance to break the tie

Headed to OT. Great showing for the Gophs. Road wins dont exist this year in the Big Ten so lets take advantage!

BTW for 90% of the game Carr was a stud so I aint mad at him. He hit big shot after big shot. He just needs to learn how to handle a double team.

Hell on the last shot Carr made it should have been and one. Haarms gets away with a lot of contact and he whines like a soccer player.

If the offensive player throws a ball off your knee it’s a kicked ball?

Jesus christ Carr turns it over after getting the rebound to ice it and now Purdue is shooting FTs to take the lead with 6 seconds left

edit: I didnt see a replay so couldnt see if Carr was fouled but he sure thinks he was.
