0-6 in extra innings. This team is a mess in the bullpen and will never win a pennant with Stan Laurel as their closer. He pissed away the game for Happ and the team...and then the 10th...you just knew it would happen. Cave's bat was especially bad. Watches a knee high fastball he had a chance to hit out of the park and then flails at the 0-2 funny ball.
It's just like when the Wild could not figure out the new OT rules and bend it to their advantage.

The off season held such promise with this team. We knew the bullpen could be shaky, but this is beyond the pale.

Anybody who plays the Twins knows all they have to do is get through 5 or 6 innings and they'll have a chance to win - no matter the score.

They've never invested the big $$ in pitching free agents it takes to truly compete for a World Series. Even with the playoff teams they seem to be behind on pitching (Mauer's post-season anemic hitting aside).

I wonder how long they go before they decide it isn't worth paying for the offense if we aren't going to pay for pitching to bring them over the hump. How long until they dump salary and become the $h!teee Twins of the late 1990s?

They don't have the excuse of no stadium to generate revenue so they are in a bit of a Pohlad Pickle. As my Granny Sull would say... "$h!t or get off the pot!"

MOAR!

On the other hand, they had years they paid for pitching (Santana, Liriano, Radke et. al.) but had massive holes in their hitting line up.

This franchise is hard on its fan base. They do just enough to get people to the park, but when the rubber hits the road, they go down in flames - and it's usually the Yankees dousing them with gas and lighting the match.

It seems to be a theme here locally where the teams get really good and have top elements in parts of the game but the weakness areas are so glaring that they never can overcome or compensate for them.

None of the local pro teams are going anywhere except maybe the Wild when they get rid of Suter/Parise, and that's because of one Russian kid changing the outlook for the whole franchise.

Yeah, but one superstar does not make a team. Look at Edmonton right now. It ain't happening. Buxton appears to be approaching Superstar status and he will not have the players around him he needs.

In 1987 and 1991 it seems like the Twins had a pretty young roster of players they weren't over paying on. In both of those World Series years they had a stud pitcher in the rotation (Viola, Morris) and a strong bullpen. They also made key off-season additions, such as Reardon, Baylor and Davis. Somebody back then knew how to put a team together.

Of course not just Kaprisov, but he is the difference to take the next step. He will have more around him than Buxton or Jefferson/Cook.

As crazy as it seems, the Timberwolves might be on the most positive track right now.

He may but contracts and players turn over fast. The Wild will lose a good player again to the expansion draft this summer. I'm not convinced the pipeline is there to sustain it. And the defense, which is their core, is aging and expensive.

This team would kill it in a 7 inning softball league.
Except they're winless in 7 inning games this year (double header games).
Maybe they just need every game called for weather 2 innings early then. They seem to carry a lead to the last innings they expect to play then give it up in those last 1-2.

Former Twins manager who preceded Tom Kelly. Ray Miller was a great pitching coach, and was not so great manager.

I see the fan interest here is about on par with the team's performance.

Twins blew a chance in the 5th with the bases loaded and no outs. Polanco and Kepler tonight were both just lost at the plate.

Highlight of the game is the fan who held up the "Fire Rocco" sign during live play.

It's barely into May and it feels like the season has slipped away.

No timely hitting and no pitching. Probably the two most important things you can have on a team.

Phil Cuzzi is so bad behind the plate today. It's a miracle that nobody has gotten tossed from the Twins dugout. He's giving Texas pitchers 8" of outside corner.

Buxton pulls up short in the 9th trying to beat out a ground ball to 3B. Walked off the field without much limp but was definitely not comfortable when he pulled up.

Team can't catch a break.

The Twins need to send Sano down to play for the Saints for awhile & get straightened out, if he can. You just can't keep putting a guy in the everyday lineup that strikes out 3 times a game! They keep saying that he will figure it out, but he hasn't for the last 3 years! The bullpen also needs a major shakeup. Is there no one in the minor league system that should get a shot in the bullpen? If now they better go out & find somebody! Colome, Robles, Stashak & the rest of the bullpen are not cutting it! It's going to be a long season with this bunch coming out of the bullpen!!

The Twins need to send Sano down to play for the Saints for awhile & get straightened out, if he can. You just can't keep putting a guy in the everyday lineup that strikes out 3 times a game! They keep saying that he will figure it out, but he hasn't for the last 3 years!
Sano career K/AB %: 42.4
Sano 2021 K/AB %: 45.3
Sano age in 4 days: 28

Good luck with that!

Just our luck we release or trade him and he becomes another David Ortiz. :)
Hah! It's an easy comparison to make, but Ortiz was never a strikeout merchant like Sano is. I don't think Sano is capable of improving to the level Ortiz did after he was released. If only because he doesn't have a little Tom Kelly on his shoulder telling him he's not good enough.

We hook Detroit this weekend, two worst records in the game.

Buxton likely out for 'weeks' with sprained hip.

Twins get a win in a marathon, twice delayed game 7-3. Colome, Robles, and Thielbar all throw scoreless innings.
Kepler hit a HR against a lefty for the first time since Sept 2019.

Pitching is bad, and the hitting is bad today. Kind of a theme this year.

The Twins look like a losing team in 21, they play with zero swagger & appear to be a team that expects things to fall apart during tight games and/or in the late innings.

I think both. Had a super-magic year (for Twins' standards) and now we suck. Overall, this is a very average team. We just hit all the highs and lows very quickly.

Talent-wise this is a much better than average team.
They have yet to have their lineup that they were projected to have by midseason.

Kiriloff LF
Buxton CF
Kepler RF
Sano 1B
Polanco/Arraez 2B
Simmons SS
Donaldson 3B
Garver/Jeffers C
Cruz DH

That is a lineup that can and will produce a lot of runs if/when they all get to play together.
Donaldson got hurt in the first inning of game one. Kepler missed a bunch of games with COVID. Buxton has missed a few and will miss more. Arraez on concussion list. Kiriloff didn't make the team out of spring training. Sano started the season ice cold. So did Polanco and Garver/Jeffers.
Polanco is starting to heat up and Garver is finding more barrels too. We saw what Kiriloff was capable of before his wrist injury put him on the IL.

Happ, Pineda, Berrios, and Maeda are all above average starting pitchers, Shoemaker not so much so far.
The problem is the bullpen has been a joke so far (though Colome has looked better his last couple outings). The free passes from the relievers has been killer - Robles has been extremely tough to hit but has given up too many free passes. Duffey's usually pinpoint control has been anything but so far. Rogers has been mostly really really good. Alcala seems to have figured it out after some early season struggles.

The problem so far has been that when the offense has been good, the pitching has been sketchy or downright bad (thinking of games like the 13-12 loss @ Oakland). When the pitching has been good, the offense has done nothing. We have 8 games where we gave up 4 runs or less and lost. And 1 more where we gave up 3 in the first nine innings and gave up a couple in extra innings.

In retrospect, it’s even more frustrating that they didn’t go for it two years ago when half the team was having career years. They could have done a lot more than just get Romo for the bullpen.

Every season will be a lost season. The Twins are not one of the "Haves" in baseball. Maybe if they introduce a salary cap or something.

Only way that is going to happen is if one team wins 4-5-6 titles in a row with the big money.

13 teams have made the World Series in the last decade. That list includes Tampa Bay and Kansas City(twice), and doesn't include the Yankees. That's a completely BS excuse.

And in 1980 the US Olympic team won a gold medal using college players.

Looks like the 2015 Royals made it to the playoffs largely due to a weak American League. The AL Central was bad. Yankees were ~0.500 and the Red Sox were garbage.

It is possible for small market teams to win World Series, but it is a huge disadvantage. Bonin's excuse is a poor one, but not completely BS. They need the revenue and an owner willing to spend. I do think the lack of a cap is holding the sport back.

If the Twins made a run at a couple pitchers in 2019 and 2020, they'd have been damn good.

There has never been a professional sports franchise in Minnesota that has benefited from the existence of a salary cap.

Dick was shocked that a White Sox player got a hit off Rogers. What team has he been watching this year?

He was also shocked last week when we fell to 0-7 or whatever it is in extras. Like it was just how could you be so unlucky? Well when you suck and the other team is better it’s not luck Bremer you moron.

If the other team was that much better, then it probably wouldn't have gone into extra innings...

With how poorly the Twins have been playing this season I bet the players want a face covering policy for them.

It's rough being a Minnesota sports fan. Hopefully the Wild can have a good playoff run and give us Minnesota sports fans something exciting.

Who knows if that will change anything this season, but that Sano homerun felt like a huge lift for this team.
