Victor Valdes has signed with Man United. 18 month deal. That's not bad backup at all. Can't wait to see how he does in the upcoming FA Cup match against Cambridge. Hopefully the club is still confident in getting De Gea to extend his contract and stay...

I really want to see Jurgen give Ibarra some playing time. I truly think his speed and fearlessness to work through defenders will be a huge difference maker for the USMNT.

16 year old Martin Odegaard has signed with Real Madrid.

He is set to make $120,000 per week.

16, living in Madrid, and making 120k a week. Must be rough

I love that the Reddit Soccer page added a "watch" filter, where you can just have gifs and videos show up. You can scroll through there and watch page after page of crazy goals. Sometimes there's some real obscure stuff on there. There'll be one like: "Hey guys, check out this sick goal from the Israeli League, 6th division!"

Dortmund is DEAD LAST in Bundesliga...

They were in the GD Champions League Final two years ago, and now they're worried about whether or not they're going to relegated to 2. Bundesliga or not. That's shocking to me.

I knew they were having a down year, but hadn't looked at the German table in a while. Saw a tweet quoting Jurgen Klopp saying he was confident that BVB will stay up.

Did a double take and went to check the table and sure enough dead last, 4-4-11.

Today marks the anniversary of the 1958 Munich Air Disaster.

Roger Byrne - aged 28, full-back. 277 appearances, 19 goals. "An aristocratic footballer, majestic in his movement. Roger was so fast but at the same time he controlled his movement beautifully, like Nureyev." - Sir Matt Busby

Eddie Colman - aged 21, half-back. 107 appearances, 2 goals. "Eddie was a chirpy lad and a terrific player. He pushed the ball - never kicked it - and he jinked past players. He was known for his swivel hips." - Wilf McGuinness

David Pegg - aged 22, forward. 148 appearances, 28 goals. "David would have been a great asset to any team because he was a natural left-flank player. David was very, very clever. Our best left-winger by a mile." - Sir Matt Busby

Mark Jones - aged 24, half-back. 120 appearances, 1 goal. "Yorkshireman Mark was a really lovely fellow, but my word he was a tough nut, and nobody took any liberties with him on or off the field." - Bill Foulkes

Tommy Taylor - aged 26, forward. 189 appearances, 128 goals. "I rate him as one of the all-time, best centre-forwards in the game, and he had yet to realise all his potential. He was a typically bluff Yorkshireman in many ways, often acting the clown, and a great team man." - Bill Foulkes

Duncan Edwards - aged 21, half-back. 175 appearances, 21 goals. "When I used to hear Muhammad Ali proclaim to the world he was the greatest, I used to smile. The greatest of them all was a footballer named Duncan Edwards." - Jimmy Murphy. "The only player who ever made me feel inferior." - Sir Bobby Charlton

Geoff Bent - aged 25, full-back. 12 appearances. "When Geoff matured and reached his twenties there were many clubs after him but he stayed loyal. He could look after himself and was a great tackler. Roger Byrne was a consistent player and very brave, that was the reason Geoff got so few games, but he was good enough to hold a regular place in any team." - Jimmy Murphy

Liam 'Billy' Whelan - aged 22, forward. 96 appearances, 52 goals. "Billy was a magician with a ball at his feet. I really don't think he knew how good he was and how much better he could have become. A world-class forward. There is no doubt about that. His vision and passing was sheer class." - Albert Scanlon

Walter Crickmer, club secretary / Tom Curry, trainer / Bert Whalley, coach. "Walter Crickmer always reminded me of a little dynamo, nothing was too much trouble. Tom Curry was someone we looked up to like a father. And Bert Whalley was certainly a tremendous help to me when I was a part-timer." - Bill Foulkes

They are only having a down year in the league. Still in the Champions League knockout stage. Still in the DFB-Pokal. It's weird.

The battle for a UCL spot is shaping up to be pretty entertaining.

3. Southampton - 45 pts
4. Man U - 43 pts (1 less game played)
5. Spurs - 43 pts
6. Arsenal - 42 pts
7. Liverpool - 39 pts

Should be good stuff!

Yeah, that was a very exciting game to watch, Spurs were very fast and Kane looked great. I agree with the announcers that it was surprising Welbeck came out instead of Giroud.

Chelsea vs. Burnley - Like last season, Chelsea are "struggling" against the bottom table, draw to Burnley, letting AV score, loss @ Newcastle, draw @ Sunderland, insert cheap shot about Spurs. Matic was sent off, rightly so IMO, but Barnes should have been gone as well; that was the kind of tackle that breaks legs. Chelsea should have had a PK for the handball, bad no call. I was fine with the no call on the push on Costa; it could/should have been a PK, but Costa has earned a reputation there. I think Kurt Zouma is going to be a stud for a long time; he's got very good speed and quickness, seems to be making the smart/simple plays, and can get up and get the ball.

Southampton vs. Liverpool - Coutinho going upper 90, bar down from 30 out, WOW  . And Mignolet definitely should have been sent off for that hand ball.

Chelsea "struggled" against Burnley because of the horrible referee. They should have been up at least 2-nil at halftime. The handball was a clear penalty. The Costa play could have gone either way. Barnes could have been sent off in the first half for the kick on Ivanovic (at minimum it's a yellow) and definitely should have been sent off for the tackle on Matic. Matic was rightfully sent off, but it should have been 10 v 10 at that point with Chelsea up by 2. I have to believe that Atkinson will be getting a week off after that performance. He made Don Adam proud.

Friend had almost as bad a game in the Southampton v Liverpool match. Mignolet should have been sent off for that handball and there were penalties missed both ways.

You don't see this every day. Superman missed a penalty today and then followed it up by missing a wide open net too. In fairness that would have been a spectacular finish if it went in.

Lol'd at this, from the Dirty Tackle:

Chelsea has a new kit sponsor, the fee they'll be receiving goes up from $18m (too lazy to google the pound symbol) to $40m.

Here's how Chelsea will spend this influx of money.

The team that is most notorious for "parking the bus" is now sponsored by a tire company. How fitting!

There was an indefinite football suspension in Greece earlier this week, but they made it for one week and for the Greek Super League.

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/31627613

Greece: Government backtracks and bans Super League for a week

The Greek government has backtracked on its decision to suspend professional football in the country indefinitely.

The suspension - the third one of the season - will now last a week and cover just the Greek Super League.

The government took action in a bid to crack down on football violence.

The suspension follows violence at Sunday's Super League match between Olympiakos and Panathinaikos, as well as a brawl between club officials at a board meeting on Tuesday.

It had been announced earlier on Wednesday that all professional matches would be suspended "indefinitely".

But after a second meeting with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, deputy sports minister Stavros Kontonis confirmed that the suspension would be limited to this weekend's top-flight action.

Kontonis said the government and football authorities would reconvene next Wednesday and the Super League would only resume on condition that promises given for containing crowd violence were adhered to.

Government stance on violence is 'irrevocable'

Deputy sports minister Kontonis: "Under the current circumstances, it is impossible to have Super League games played this weekend.

"The decision of the government regarding the combatting of violence is definitive and irrevocable. If the situation remains the same, there will be another suspension."

Ban will 'make no difference'

Greek football journalist Panos Polyzoidis, who was at the Panathinaikos-Olympiakos match, told BBC Radio 5 live: "The league was recently suspended, but this decision indicates the government's inability to come up with concrete measures to tackle the problem.

"Football-related violence has been going on 30 or 40 years and the state has not taken any systematic measures to tackle problem. The suspension will make no difference."

Build-up to latest suspension

Fans hurled flares, rocks and bottles at officials during Panathinaikos's 2-1 victory over leaders Olympiakos. An executive meeting of Super League officials was then called off after a Panathinaikos official claimed he had been punched by Olympiakos security personnel.

The first suspension followed the death of a fan after clashes between fans of third-division teams Ethnikos Piraeus and Irodotos. The second followed an assault on the assistant director of the refereeing committee.

I want to see that board meeting brawl.

Sounds like Minnesota United has taken the next step to get into the MLS.

Acquired an option to buy property for a stadium, and they have the MLS's support.

Would be sweet to get an MLS team here!

They also upped their local TV package with 45...all home AND away NASL league games are apparently going to be carried this season, which is pretty cool.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Chelsea getting bounced from the CL by a 10 man PSG. The sad thing is that UEFA won't rescind Zlatan's suspension. There is no way IMO that he should have got a straight red for that unless he made a couple other reckless tackles earlier in the game.

I don't think it should have been a straight red. Even if he had made other reckless tackles, that wouldn't draw a red. I don't think he will miss more than 1 game. Hopefully Chelsea can recover and focus on the league now. I'm heading over to London for the Chelsea v Liverpool match in May. If things work out, it will be when the clinch the Premier League. :dup:

MLS confirms “advanced discussions” with Minnesota on expansion, will evaluate going beyond 24 teams

The league confirmed on Monday afternoon that it is in “advanced discussions” with representatives from Minnesota United FC, though the final decision is not ready to be announced.

“We are in advanced discussions with Bill McGuire and his partners in Minnesota to bring a Major League Soccer expansion club to the Twin Cities and are particularly excited about their plans for a new soccer-specific stadium that will serve as the club’s home,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement released by the club. “We remain on track to announce the next MLS expansion market in the next 30-45 days, though no specific date for an announcement has been set.”

At the normal time of year, you'd have to worry about heat stroke for the players and fans. By mid-November, the average daily high is down to 85 or so, and then down to a chilly 75-ish for the championship.

Yeah, just not feasible to hold the tournament when the average temp is like 120, haha.

Still, I'm sure the European leagues are not thrilled that they have to put their entire operation on hold for a whole month.

And the team in a title race who has their star player shred his knee will be REALLY pissed!

The sick part is, FIFA and the IOC are so bad, the NCAA is only the 3rd most corrupt sports organizing body around.

So apparently Steven Gerrard got on against Man U today, and 48 seconds after coming in, he stomps down on Herrera's leg, promptly earning him a red card
