I think it's both...lives in St. Paul and goes to SSP for HS. At least based on what I have seen on FB.
I've seen tweets from people trying to claim her for Auburn because she'll be a first-year student there soonish.

If she was from a different state and was heading to U of M for first year, I bet a lot of people would be doing the same.

It's especially nice that she was born and raised in MN. Sometimes we like to claim someone as our own if they had a cup of coffee in Minnesota (Greg Lemond).

I've seen some tweets from Utah fans doing the same with McCallum. Fair game to me.

Congrats to the young lady as well. Besides her parents, I bet the person happiest to see her win is Simone Biles because it gets her off the hook. It's easier to justify Biles withdrawing when a fellow American wins gold. Not so much if some Euro swoops in and takes it.

The year is 2021. Can we please find a different way to differentiate runners on the track other than huge pieces of paper on the front and back that need to be pinned to them?

I have watched exactly zero % of the Olympics. I am good with that as well.

I’m trying to stream it on nbcsports and thought it would allow me to find some event and stick with it but they still jump around to other events. And the nbc stream is full of ads. I can go in GPL and write a bunch of crap while I’m waiting for them. As Olympics go I haven’t watched much. I’m more a Winter Olympics fan.

If there's a distance swim and Bobby Finke is in the field, I'm watching it. Takes it nice and easy until the final length, where he skips a few gears and destroys the competition. Super fun to see.

25.7 they said for the final 50 meters (30th length of the pool). He looked like he shot out of a cannon on the final turn.

The US women gymnasts have had a pretty good run in Tokyo even without Simone. They’ve got 5 medals already including the team silver.

Agreed. Suni had some uncharacteristic errors on the uneven bars, but still managed a bronze. I guess Simone will be participating in the beam final, we'll see if the twisties have faded.

I’ll be curious to see how it goes. The beam isn’t a high flying event like the other 3 are, so if she’s going to come back this one makes the most sense.

I’m happy for Jade and MyKayla given they had a chance to show how good they are in the individual events. In Jade’s case I think she was 8th in the all around despite one bad event.

American Rai Benjamin just broke the world record in the 400m hurdles by a half a second. Problem is he lost to a guy by a quarter of a second. That was an impressive race.

From what I have seen, he is the gold medal favorite. He won the Pan Am games earlier this year. He’s unstoppable so far.

I'm not sure I'd call him the favorite, but I think he has a decent shot. I'm not that well read on the contenders but I did find this:
https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/7 ... mpic-draws
After his opener, we’ll really find out just how good Gable is as he’ll have reigning Olympic champion and 2X World champion Taha Akgul of Turkey. If he makes it past Akgul, he’ll most likely have Dzianis Khramiankou of Belarus in the semis. Khramiankou is currently ranked #4 in the world, but up until this point has for sure been a tier below the top three.

My general Olympic wrestling observation is the path to a medal seems to travel through the 'stan' country neighborhood.

Yeah, his path to gold would have been easier in the '80s when a lot of the wrestlers would have been weeded out in the Soviet qualifications. But to be the best, you have to beat the best as a certain limousine ridin', jet flyin' son of a gun used to say.

I just got back from a trip to Voyaguers NP with a wrestler who was the favored gold medalist in the '80 olympics until Carter pulled out of the summer games. Got to hear a lot of great stories about him and what he went thru. He likes Gable's chances.

NBC announcer described the Kyrgyz wrestler as "from Azerbaijan" twice!
I had to look them up to remind myself of the geography. They’re both in my don’t need to go there list. But not exactly neighbors.

Really impressive that two of Steveson's takedowns were in scrambles after Akgul got in on his ankles. I'm in awe.

The 2nd seed, who was in Steveson's side of the bracket, got upset too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Steveson is the real life counterpart of WCW's Goldberg back in the Monday Night Wars of pro wrestling, between WWE/F and WCW....He just keeps winning in dominating fashion.

Please....PLEASE! I hope that no one starts to draw comparisons between Gable and his namesake for not giving up points during an Olympics. They are two completely different eras of international competition with two completely different sets of rules for winning a match. In 1972 a match consisted of one 5 minute match. Now it is a best of three 3 minute matches along with chances at passivity penalties where a ref can take away points from a wrestler deemed too passive.

Gable is one of the best in the world at his weight but he is still not at the level of Dan Gable or Cael Sanderson.

I didn't even know who Dan Gable was (I assume it was long before my time, a google search confirmed it). I recognize Cael Sanderson, as he was wrestling in my youth.

If you are just a casual fan, which I am gathering that is what you are, Dan Gable is before your time. Suffice to say, Dan Gable is the standard that wrestlers and wrestling programs judge themselves against.

A coworker (DII wrestler at Mankato back in his day) reminded me today that a few years ago wrestling was perilously close to being removed from the Olympics. It would have been a crime, even as a casual fan I consider wrestling to be one of the cornerstone summer Olympic events. Eliminating wrestling from the Olympics would be like the B1G kicking out Minnesota, Michigan, or one of the other founding members.

And an Iowa coaching legend. He was intense as a coach. I went to his training camp, and when he was involved, it was nuts. Got to go to his house and see his gold medal and other trophies (including this playboy playmate puzzle on the mantel). Hearing about what he went thru in his young life explains why he is so driven.

discontinuing wrestling in the Olympics, while adding things like Skateboarding and BMX would be a pure money play.

Nothing against skateboarding or bmx or surfing, but there are a core of sports that should be sacrosanct. Wrestling is one, Field (and track) is another.

I considered going to one of his training camps but I chose to do just the one week camp. Still one of the best experiences of my competitive career was going there and having either Gable or several of his all-americans teach you daily. It was so motivating. I will say that it was hard to watch his interview with Joe Rogan this spring, he has lost a bit of the focus he was legendary for and it was apparent in that interview. Though it was one of the only times I've seen him publicly go over the details of his sister's murder.

I was talking with a friend about the Olympics and a subject that seemed odd to both of us was the fact that some Olympic events obviously include the best athletes in the world at their sport, while others don't.

best athletes in the world at their specialty:
Wrestling, Field (and track), Swimming, Gymnastics, Women's Soccer

decidedly NOT the best in the world
Men's Soccer, Boxing, baseball, Hockey (Unless the NHL lets them play)

When I was in high school several Track and Field meets would end with a 4x100 relay race run by the shot putters and discus throwers. I bet Crouser would do OK, but Kovacs might not be that fast after 10-20 meters...

Yeah!! The big man 100m dash, except we didn’t do a relay. My cousin was a shot putter and about 350 (played d line) and it was so damn funny watching him run the 100m against the other big men. He was always dead last..

I had to Google jeu de plume. WTF was that? Basically handball, then really small rackets. The precursor to tennis.
