Matthew Savoie commits to Denver. He is being called the next Crosby. He was denied early entry to the WHL. Some say he is trying to force Hockey Canada's hand on this. Will be interesting how this plays out. BTW, his brother is also committed to Denver.

Caulfield’s going to UND. Caufield’s going to WI
Does Caufield primarily play wing or center? I've seen some mock drafts that have the Wild selecting him around 13th overall.

I believe he plays on the wing with Hughes centering.

So did Cade Fairchild (at this point in his U17 season). And he didn’t exactly turn into Alex Goligoski. 😉 Still, it’s a nice honor for Brock ☝️

If he’s only in 8th grade and they are offering him a scholly, he’s probably pretty good.

For all my hate on the NA the best team in MN picks up a commitment from a 21 year old in the NA Brandon Puricelli.

Said it on before but Michigan won't have room for many of their commits, recently lost Semik to ASU. Now looks like Cal Kiefiuk might be moving on, his page doesn't say Michigan anymore. I would definitely have interest in him, fast, plays hard.

Top rated local 04 for the WHL draft. Best program in the country you have to assume he's a good one and had his pick of schools. If the Chesley and Fleming rumors are true think that's all of the 04s from the recent YHH tweet.

I think early recruiting is bad for business so the rules don’t really matter. Let everyone try to beat the deadline and commit kids that may not pan out.

I don't think getting commitments from 15 year olds is any kind of a requirement to be successful in college hockey. Not by a long shot.

Agreed. You can’t just sit and watch every good player go by, even if they’re in 8th grade, and just not make an effort. Recruiting is a bit of both in terms of old or young, and part of both is young.

If you think "every good player" goes by age 16, you haven't been paying attention very carefully.

Not only are you trying to project a kid thru multiple levels of hockey, you are also trying to project how big he may be when he gets to campus, as well as what The rest of your team will look like.

If you are real sure someone will be a stud then offer, like Luke Mittelstadt. Doing what UND did with three ‘04’s is dumb, just cause they do dumb stuff doesn’t mean we need to follow.

You can make a kid know you think highly of him, and that you are gonna watch his development closely as he matures. Motzko has talked about preaching patience to recruits and their families. That’s seems like a much smarter approach even if you miss out on 1 or 2 kids.

You don't have to entirely abandon young recruiting but acting like it is some sort of prerequisite is simply not paying attention to how many good players are out there that don't commit really young.

I think the real key for these kinds of players is to get them to play the extra year of juniors if they don't continue their trajectory of being an immediate contributor at the NCAA level. Players committing at 14 and 15 have been at the top of their 'draft class' for a few years and probably feel like things will stay that way. Clearly college recruiting staffs feel the same or they wouldn't tie themselves to early recruits.

The problem is identifying the right time for the player to make the leap to college hockey and if there is a disagreement, then you have to be okay with letting them sign with another program. Motzko was in on these types of players before and didn't have to worry about having too many of them to handle, but clearly he didn't have the access to them that he has at Minnesota. Just looking at the players committed to Minnesota under the new staff, they've got a bunch of 2001 kids and not all of them will come in at the same time.

Clearly Sammy Walker turned out to be the right kind of player to make the leap from high school senior one year to college freshman the next... I think the thing to watch will be how it's handled once Motzko figures out his whiteboard of commits and roster spots. The timing is a little off right now and they're going to be really young next year tying to replace at least 11 players. It'll also be interesting to see how he continues to balance finding uncommitted players at 17 and 18 to bring into the program as it seems that's one of the places Motzko/Raboin have made some of their biggest discoveries.

I just don't think you're going to see that in 2019-20.

I really don't have a problem with us early recruiting, we just have to be better at it. I know that's obvious and cliche but just avoiding recruiting kids at that age completely isn't a great strategy.

The irony is we could switch to going more of the Kato philosophy of basically getting all late bloomers and relying on getting kids already in juniors and this board would have a tantrum of us falling behind on that early, high upside elite talent. It really is all about balance.

It’s good for college hockey, and Big10 for him to go to Wisconsin. Also his dream school, no chance he’s not there in fall. Should be a full house at Mariucci when we play them.

I rather see Sparty get strong if we are worried about our SOS at the end on the year. I can handle sconnie being terrible, assuming we will always have "that one school" in the conference. If we are good and win games we shouldn't have to worry about the BADgers being good/bad, but I do love seeing them struggle as long as the rest of the B10 is winning.

I rather see Sparty get strong if we are worried about our SOS at the end on the year. I can handle sconnie being terrible, assuming we will always have "that one school" in the conference. If we are good and win games we shouldn't have to worry about the BADgers SUCK being good/bad, but I do love seeing them struggle as long as the rest of the B10 is winning.
It’s not about strength of schedule, it’s about attendance. This program need some good ol’ fashioned intra conference top 5 ranked rivalry games.

Haven’t we played OSU, Penn State and Notre Dame when those schools have been ranked top 5 at the time? Pretty sure that didn’t bring the people out, the ship has sailed on attendance, it won’t ever be back to what it was.

Wisconsin was best attended game last year, if they are good, the fans will fill the building.

As for your 2nd comment I disagree 100 percent. People act like all current trends will continue forever, they won’t. People are prisoners of the moment, all the current buzz about Gophers is negative. Once we generate positive buzz it will bring people into arena. Maybe they’ll be new fans, not the grumpy old ones.

That’s why I said it had to be Wisconsin (when both MN and WI are strong nationally). I think it’s the best way to get the fans back. So as much as I prefer them to feel misery we need each other to be strong.

Savoie (DU) 1st overall in WHL draft
Lindgren (UM) 7th overall
Levis (UM) 20th
UND commitment Singleton falls to round 2 must as teams have a bigger fear he goes NCAA.

Both UM commits went to same team and are good friends so they gone.

Did not realize Stauber has a kid (leading USHL in GAA) committed to Mankato. (And no I'm not saying he had to go to the Gophers). It's more an age thing - seeing players you loved when you were younger now having kids that are quality players nearing college age.
Currently under construction.

I have been a few of his games this year, and he is an example of a goalie getting hot at the right time. During the regular season he split his time with another goalie, and both had pretty identical stats. His regular season stats were 16-8-1 with a GAA of 2,91 and save % of .883. As you said, he has been lights out so far in the playoffs , including a 4 OT win in the playoffs. Not sure how he will turn out when he goes to Kato. He may turn into another Eric Hartzell, who turned out pretty good when he left the Stampede and went out east or simply a solid #2. Goalies are always a crap shoot. I also agree with you that it's ok that he is going somewhere else than the Gophers.

Why do you assume the UMich kids are gone? Because they got drafted by the same WHL team they’d go there so they can play together? Couldn’t they do the same thing at UMich?

BU in an interesting spot for next year, they had 5 forwards leave, only two slated to come in and they are both 2001's, in Mastrisimone, and Zegras. I think Ethan Phillips has some school left but maybe he'll be there as well. Guessing they are working aggressively to flip guys committed to other schools.

I think one flipped to Princeton, the other hasn’t done anything in juniors

Who are you talking about? Gorman?

Phillips
Mastro
Zegras
John Copeland (F/D)(99)
Jamie Armstrong (98)

That's three damn good forwards and two role players. Could be worse... I'm sure they'll add someone else.

You’re right, not as bad as I thought. Was looking on Neutral Zone. Thought they may move on from Copeland and Armstrong, but looks like they both committed recently.

Does Heisenberg have Phillips for 2019 or 2020?

2019 and he's a 2001 so that sounds right. Basically all Canadian 2001s would be seniors.

It just means they haven't spoken to him since the start of the month. South St Paul and Bloomington Kennedy have commitments right now that's kinda cool.
