Exactly, yes to all of this. Sammy Walker was taken in the 7th round and I see great things coming to the Gophers.
Anybody that has been a fan long enough should be able to reference a number of players (both here and elsewhere) that were drafted in the first few rounds that didn't really live up to it in college.

Meanwhile, we see guys who didn't get drafted until later (or not at all) have good success.

It has to be the right fit, the right timing, the right character, etc. The rest is just window dressing.

A lot of players can make a "positive" impact here. It isn't just a select number that get drafted in the first 30 picks in any given year.

And whatever you think we gain with one guy, there is also a subsequent loss in some areas because it's not like you are going to get a first round pick for a bargain basement scholarship.
I think you guys are both right, obviously if we had any shot at Tufte he would've been a nice player to have and missing on Boeser sucks. But with last year's team I don't really look at it and say, "wow this team was really devoid of talent and that's why we struggled!", it just seemed like no matter who we had last year the talent would've been squandered with how the team was playing for large swaths of the year, they were basically just a punching bag for the other team's offense while generating very little of their own at evens (not to even mention the disastrous PP).
<GophDogFan> yep, so sad... you have a new moment, when your uncle gets mad because you got the best of him. the last straw was when i told him that UND's hockey program is like crystal pepsi: Nobody every liked it.

Maple Grove goalie Ethan Haider to Clarkson.

He was an interesting prospect that I thought the gophers would pursue but it’s pretty obvious Moe is their guy...nice to have competition at that position though

We'll have Robson for Moe's freshman year. Don't need a goalie until 2020–21.

#1 overall USHL pick and 3rd round OHL pick Stephen Halliday to UND

Excluding tenders (too much work to look up), top two (and first overalls) since 2011 when Cammy and Guertler went 1-2:
UND 4 (3)
UMD 2 (1)
SCSU 1 (1)
ND 1 (1)
UMN 1 (0)
Maine/UNH (transfer) 1 (0)

Gophers have two potential high 03 picks in Lucius and Mittelstadt.

Anyone familiar with the family trees of Andover hockey talent? The Gopher women recently got a commitment from '04 Maddie Kaiser. She is listed as being from Ham Lake and played boy's youth hockey for Andover last season. Maddie is currently playing for the Green Giant fall team. Maddie has a Green Giant teammate named Sara Kaiser, who is also an excellent player. Sara is listed as being from Andover so I'm guessing the girls are not sisters but quite possibly cousins? Seems likely that Wyatt is the brother of one these girls.

He was very raw last year. I think Guentzel had been keeping an eye on him. Sounds like he improved a lot over the summer so it will be interesting to see what type of college player he turns into. The dogs haven’t had many big misses in recruiting lately.

Of course the Gophers have several high-end puck-movers lined up but having a big guy with a mean-streak would be a nice thing to have as well. He gets around the rink pretty well for someone of his size but playing on the small sheet up there should max out his game.

I think you hit it when you say he moves around for his size and the smaller rink. Sandelin and Herter have developed a pretty impressive track record with those types over the past 7-8 seasons. Heck even a D-III transfer (Kotyk) turned into a nice player along with the studs that have been on the blue line lately. The pipeline coming in over the next few years on D might rival what they have up there currently with Gallatin/Kelley/Francis/etc. If you're a young D-man in the state it would be tough to put another program above tUMD right now in terms of style and development. Probably could say the same for goalies with Brant Nicklin helping develop Kaskisuo/Miska/Shepard consecutively. The new arena was clearly a game-changer for tUMD.

Button also had Jack Ramsey inside of his top 30 to start off a draft year. But maybe he was just on drugs that one day.

I believe that was Button’s preseason top 30 moustache list.

Even if they don't go first round their defensive recruiting and talent by the time they get on campus has been way better than ours and it's annoying.

And we're doomed forever too. Bob has been coach for a few months and he's already no better than Lucia.
Currently under construction.

With what they currently have maybe...Also, their best D is undrafted.

I like what we have lined-up, assuming most play a year of juniors post HS. Koster, Lacombe, Johnson could be nice mobile, puck-moving guys. I think Boltman could really take off in next couple years, then add in Cam York for next year for a game-breaker type!

I know Bob can turn it around. I wouldn't count on York, though...

With that in mind I could see D being the weakness this year and next year, and maybe by 20-21 the unit is back where it should be.

Yeah it just goes to show that scouting isn’t an exact science and some of these guys are probably no better than the average fan at guessing this stuff (not saying this guy in particular but more generally).
<GophDogFan> yep, so sad... you have a new moment, when your uncle gets mad because you got the best of him. the last straw was when i told him that UND's hockey program is like crystal pepsi: Nobody every liked it.

The problem is that some of the people that like to point toward these guys as having any kind of superior opinion don't grasp what you said.

Some people expect college coaches to hit the mark every single time with the right recruits... yet somehow overlook what happens with pro franchises (or full time scouting publications/sites)... these entities have multiple people scouting kids all year long as a full time job and even they screw up plenty (even with high picks).

There's a long line of guys that ended up busts despite being picked high by talent evaluators with ample resources at their disposal

It’s impossible, players, people for that matter develop thru experiences and how they respond to them. No one knows what kind of hockey or life experiences these kids will have in next couple years. Whether they are from Edina, or 218 area code.

That’s a good thing. Good for him!

You should be rooting for kids to succeed. Even those that aren’t, or may never be, Gophers. Go MN hockey!

I have no doubt Bonin is rooting for him...and at the same time, like a lot of Gopher fans, hoping that somehow he changes his mind & ends up at MN. 😉

Knowing tBob’s interest in international players, in a few years CC might have more Minnesotans on their team than we do

Question: Who was the last men's head hockey coach to leave a program and be hired as the head coach at another program, and within his first year at the new school his former team gets ranked No. 1? Just curious if this has ever happened before this week.

Probably happens more than you think. If a team does well and the coach moves on to a higher job, a lot of the players likely stick around for a good team next year. 2015-16 Fawks come to mind...

With BC in shambles any way Helleson wants to come home? They have a great class coming with him with maybe four first rounders, though.

He went to the NHL and I don't think they've been ranked number 1 this year.

Oh, I misread the question, missed the part about being a NCAA head coach in the previous position.

All the talk of our Decommitments and guys that haven't progressed.....Look at Jake Hale for UMD, he almost made NTDP and played for USA in some international tournaments, he can't even get in games in USHL.
