I think umd had a lot of luck in getting this far. They were not the best team in the country.
In a one game format, the best team in the country probably wins the championship like 25% of the time or less. I would kill for an NHL playoff format for college hockey.

I think Michigan would have beaten them; but I don’t think they would have beat the whioux so thankfully it worked out. Glad to see Umass get revenge for 2019. Hopefully they can get their other players back (then which goalie do you play after Murray’s performance tonight??) and overcome the guys playing for the broken femur.
100% agree that Michigan beats UMD. I think Michigan-North Dakota would have been a very entertaining game. Michigan had so much skill I wouldn't have counted them out against anybody. I think UND probably would have managed a win, but I also expected them to handle UMD and that clearly didn't happen.

Anyone's game on Sunday.

I do have to say, a nacho showdown might have been interesting - I think jan had beaten umtp 5 of 7 games this year (don’t necessarily trust my counting however).

But that would have held the possibility of a three peat. So that’s okay that didn’t happen. ;)

So this is what losing a game in the NCAA tourney feel like 😲 it literally had been so long, I almost forgot 😉 Congrats to Wait & UMass, if somebody had to get the OT winner for them, I’m glad it was him BECAUSE he’s a state of MN born player. Hell of a year for tDogs, beat the #1 seed in the tourney & made the Frozen Four with a squad not as talented as the 2018, 2019 or 2020 Bulldog teams.. And the fact that Gopher fans universally dislike tDogs is a testament to their success the past 11 years ☝️☝️☝️

Yet you believe that same format makes it the best conference bar none. Didn't you state that UMASS was the reason why their region was so weak, yet that same team with a depleted roster just beat the greatest team of the decade ever.

It's funny that Duluth has never lost a game , only that the refs screw them all the time. During the last few years, Ciskie has joined the likes of the Whioux writer, as the ultimate delusional homer. If the Gophers ever come close to the run Duluth has had the last few years, and they lose in their semi final game after winning B2B, I would tip my hat and look back in glee. Anyway, Thoughts and Prayers

Don’t kid yourself, I don’t like the Bulldogs due to the fan base that has hated the Gophers from day 1. I live in Northern MN and had to put up with it for years. From statements such as “I would rather see Gophers lose to us winning.” and “I’m not sitting there, they are Gopher fans.” I could care less if the Dogs win or lose. Not one of my Bulldog friends ever pulled for the Gophers, yet wonder why I don’t pull for them.

Barry Melrose went full Donnie Shulzhoffer last night........from UMass being done like dinner shortly after the puck was dropped to wanting to adopt them in the third and OT.

I saw two opportunities for the refs to call majors on Duluth last night, and instead they looked the other way. Roth could easily have been called for checking from behind right at the end of regulation. At the very minimum the call should have been reviewed. Cairnes should have been called for headbutting in OT. Done within an arm's length of one of the officials. No call.

Refs called a decent game overall. The better team won.

Great to see Garrett Wait score his 10th goal of the season for the game winner. In the right place at the right time. :good2:

Take a stroll down memory lane. Bulldog master class in the art of the swan dive.

UMass did completely dominate the OT period. They deserved to win.

As for Saturday, I am rooting for a large fireball!!! It was the only scenario of potential teams in the final that I didn't want. Still want the west to win, but REALLY don't want SCSU to win. Nothing against the team and school, but their fans are insufferable without a Natty, so imagine what they'll be like if they win???

The tournament is not what makes it the best league. It's one factor. Also included is having the best non conference record every year, putting guys straight into the NHL instead of the AHL, and the eye test which shows better hockey.

The Big Ten is going to have Minnesota and Michigan next year. No one else will be a title contender. But the games between those two could be crazy. Michigan is my preseason favorite to win the title if no one else leaves.

Great college hockey played last night. Frozen four doesn’t disappoint, That miracle tip on St Clouds fifth goal is just what you need, they look like a team of destiny. The Bulldogs looked like they couldn’t stand another OT game. They lost momentum and what a complete meltdown, they had nothing left. I’m hoping St Cloud wins it having not been there before.

I can't wait! Should make for some great atmosphere and hopefully continue to grow the Minnesota v Michigan rivalry. I'm hoping Wisconsin is still good enough to compete, and I think they will be, but I agree that the title will most likely end up in Ann Arbor or Minneapolis.

Hasn’t the portal thrown all the predictions at this point out the window? Can’t Bucky make some big pickups this summer? Not saying you’re wrong, just curious why you think they will suck?

It will take more than a few portal pickups to help this lineup.

If UMD wins it's the greatest 10-tournament/11-season run in the last 50 years
They obviously can’t win, so they fall just shy of BC’s 03-12 10 season run by 1 frozen four, 1 finals appearance (and second place).

UMD - 0 season champs, 2 conference tourneys, 8 NCAA tourneys, 5 frozen fours, 4 finals, 1 second place, 3 championships

BC - 5 season champs, 6 conference tourneys, 8 NCAA tourneys, 6 frozen fours, 5 finals, 2 second places, 3 championships

Looking at the next 3 years, UMD would need to make the finals all 3 years, and win it all twice to have the greatest 13 year run:
BC 00-12 - 6 season champs, 7 conference tourneys, 10 NCAA tourneys, 8 frozen fours, 7 finals, 3 second places, 4 championships

UMD needed to win that game in regulation. They were the better team through most of three periods last night. It's almost inexplicable how the two teams just swapped uniforms at the break before OT.

When you have a team on the ropes, you need to put them away. If you can't, they know they dodged a bullet and come out of the locker room with a new attitude, like it's 0-0.

Momentum is a strange phenomenon how it seems to affect a team collectively. The Gophers, for example, didn't even seem like the same team against MSU, but if they had been able to keep it close anything could have happened. That's where goal tending comes in. Laffer wasn't even average in that game when they needed him to be Superman.

UMD has been so lucky in so many key games I honestly thought that they were going to pull it out. Their goalie was standing on his head in OT, and it just felt like one of those games that they were going to get fluke goal somehow. Soooo glad it didn't happen, but I was thinking it would.

I just replayed the GWG, and there were not one but two UMD players in their crease who made practically no attempt to prevent the pass or the goal.

I’ll admit I’ve never understood the “Jack ass fans” comment for Duluth, but we witnessed a prime example last night, up close and personal, UMD group of 4 near us, starting with screaming UMD. UMDduring the introduction of the UMass team. That’s just rude. Then the whining, the screaming, the laungage. Good lord, I have a potty mouth myself, but save it for when you need it, you know. Finally in OT I thought one of the guys was going to have a stroke! I’ve rarely witnessed behavior like his outside a pre-school setting. He threw his popcorn! I mean seriously, grow up.
I’ll be cheering on SCSU. Three out of four teams, if UMass wins the East coast media will be even more insufferable!

I remember when BU was stacked with all of those "high draft picks" in 2016 or so I think. They failed to get to the FF those 2 years with those "stacked" teams.

By my count UM could have 7-9 first rounders next year which would likely be a record. They'll have as good a shot in the one and done as any team, but the best team over the whole season rarely wins it. At some point a first rounder heavy team will win it and we can stop using that excuse for not getting many of those guys.

That was a weird game. Total domination by UMD but not much to show for it. Then overtime comes, and UMD doesn't show up.

I was surprised ESPN didn't give an address where we can send cards and flowers to the Sandelin family.

I would be interested in your overall thoughts about the Frozen Four this year after you get back. How was the atmosphere in the arena, what about the overall buzz around town. Were bars full etc.

You misread apparently. I want first rounders. Some people say to steer clear of too many but I say you get as many as you can possibly get.

I don't think people say stay clear. I just think by having a ton of high draft picks doesn't guarantee success. I think next years team will be a good mixture.

A couple of observations already...
Pittsburgh itself is fun. We have a hotel down by the river (a real room, not a van) and there is a fabulous river walk we’ve done each day. Restaurants are busy but NOT buzzing. Limited capacity sort of drowns the overall hype, BUT the food and local beer is good. Staff are really nice and very happy to see as many people as there are. We ate breakfast this morning at an absolute dive, the Cherry Diner. A classic breakfast with local customer sideshow! 2 eggs, choice of side of meat, toast and coffee for under $7 type of spot. There’s NO team bars as far as we can tell and no FF signage anywhere, banners, light posts, bars, etc. Our guess is since it took so long to decide if this event was actually taking place it was too late to coordinate media. Even the event merch inside the arena is slim pickings, the bare basics, example ONE hat style, not different like in the past. I don’t see any pins, the program is downloadable only, that type of thing. No Fan Fest.
Atmosphere inside is definitely subdued, bordering on lackluster. No bands, school sections are very sparse, no in between period games or fun on the ice. Even when a there’s something happening on the ice there’s not enough fans to really ramp up the excitement. We always love walking the concourse, even if normally it’s a cluster :censored: because we love spotting all the jerseys and teams, very little of that this year with the limited tickets. The games are still fun to watch and we’ve enjoyed ourselves but it’s NOTHING like past FF events.
I’m glad we came, the weather has been beautiful, the spring trees are in bloom, like I said, good food and drink, it’s been a nice little get-away.
The hockey has been okay, but without the electric atmosphere, it’s not much different then watching on tv.

Glad you are enjoying yourselves. We did not love Pittsburgh last time, mostly because we stayed out by the airport and the drive into town was a bear. We were planning on staying DT this go around, but decided to wait it out till next year in Boston.

I'd echo that. Downtown Pittsburgh is definitely quieter with the pandemic. Tough to get around as Lyft and Uber don't have enough drivers even.

Lots of hockey folks in and around downtown, which is fun. The downtown businesses do know about the hockey and are happy we are here. But we headed up to Oakland and the University of Pittsburgh this morning and nobody there had any clue about the hockey tournament, which I suspect is the small attendance allowed.

We were at the SCSU team bar yesterday (Cafe Fifth) , which was right next to the MSUM bar yesterday and across the street from the rink. Even with the capacity limits, it was packed and like FF of old. Lots of fun (fully masked after vaccinations for us, of course-- though perhaps not so for most of the rest of the folks in there).

But the weather has been fantastic, and aside from the limited attendance, the only other negative is that the temperature in the rink was FREEZING. Seriously cold in the arena. You need to take concourse walks just to warm up between periods, I am afraid.

I post ocassionally on a Penguins message board with locals so if you wanted I could prob reach out for recommendations on bars or what have you if you wanted. That said it sounds like you got it under control :)

The super bowl was the same way before the game, to the point it was so full we left and went elsewhere.

Just curious, how loud was it when msu scored? My wife said it didn't sound loud on TV, but in the middle of the crowd we weren't even able to hear the goal song. Just wondering if that was just due to being in the middle or if it was truly loud.

I would be interested in your overall thoughts about the Frozen Four this year after you get back. How was the atmosphere in the arena, what about the overall buzz around town. Were bars full etc.

Pre-covid I'd try to be in Piper's Pub on a Friday night in Pittsburgh. It's on West Carson St on the 'South Side'.

It's probably a little late, but if you want to stay downtown and get dinner (on the expensive side) there's Butcher and the Rye or Meat and Potatoes.

(I moved from Pittsburgh 5 years ago, so my info might be dated)

For those in Pitt - I’m curious if you have seen an increase in people wearing Polaris jackets since Thursday night? :giggle:

It’s much too warm and sunny for that attire! The hockey jersey/baggy shorts is everywhere, no matter which team. I’ll be interested to see the mix today, did folks make the trip for the final or not?
We had dinner last night at Fig & Ash, fabulous! The head chef talked to us several times, very appreciative of our coming in. The place was limited tables, but they were consistently full. Very good food and creative cocktails.
Honestly I’m surprised the road to Hell is paved at all.

We did dinner last night at an Italian joint on E. Carson St. Fabulous. E. Carson apparently is just as busy as ever and had a very Grand Ave vibe to it. Seemed like a fun area.

CityWorks appears to be about the only sports bar open in downtown. Bucci and Melrose sat two tables away on Wednesday night.

Are the UMass players who missed Thursday’s game all back for tonight? And do you play the regular goalie, cuz the backup looked solid to me the other night.

3 of the 4 drove to Pittsburgh yesterday. They are being tested as we speak, and the high scoring forward has passed. Waiting for the goalies results. I would play Lindberg, the goalie who missed the game. He is a top 5 goalie in the nation.

I believe they are eligible and good question about the goalie situation. iirc they've rotated most of the year.
Currently under construction.

Whatever you do, avoid the Burger King on East Carson. It's a trap.

Surprised they didn't take a closer look at that. Does offside require a challenge to review?

ESPN had the graphic wrong. They have Jack LaFontaine as the Richter winner when it was clearly Dryden McKay.. :confused2:

Ohhhh... I missed SCSU getting possession after the zone entry.
