From the Star Tribune's Puck Drop:

"That “Big Ten stinks’’ narrative in college hockey just took a hit. Of the 23 college players on the 28-player preliminary roster for the U.S. team that will compete in the World Junior Championship, 11 are from the Big Ten, six from Hockey East, four from the NCHC and two from the ECAC."

Must be a depth issue then.

Ya, they just have good young players on overall not good teams...

Also, Big Ten stinks means the "rivalries" suck.

I wonder if the recent Russia ban from world sports will have an effect at all.

From the StarTribune's "Puck Drop" blog:
"Six Minnesotans, including three Gophers recruits, are competing for the U.S. junior select team in the World Junior A Challenge in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and have helped the U.S. to a 5-0 start. The Gophers recruits on Team USA are Rhett Pitlick (Chaska, Muskegon of USHL), Matt Knies (Phoenix, Tri-City of USHL) and Michael Koster (Chaska, Tri-City of USHL). Minnesota also is represented by Grant Silianoff (Edina, Cedar Rapids of USHL, Notre Dame recruit), Nolan Krenzen (Duluth, Whioux City of USHL, Nebraska Omaha recruit) and Ethan Haider (Maple Grove, Whioux City of USHL, Clarkson recruit)".

What I hear is that Russia is loaded. But I think the US will be right in the mix.

In his most recent article at The Athletic, Pronman mentioned the Americans were favorites (in his view) but Canada had some recsnt developments in their favor. As mentioned above, Russia also strong. Looks like those three enter as the best teams on paper.

Canada is the favorite, US has a good group but a lot of their best forwards are '01s which I think will hurt them.

I think getting back to having 2-3 guys in the mix each year will show us the program is back...I used to love watching our guys be a big part of the winning teams...I think future recruits will want to go where they get a shot at this ...

I think I ask this every single year.... But why is US & Canada always in the same group? I can recall quite a few gold medal games that they played one another. So they should be in different groups the following year, but they rarely are.

Whats the deal?

USA v Canada will draw the most eyeballs and having them in the same group ensures that they play each other at least once. That'd be my guess anyhow.
<GophDogFan> yep, so sad... you have a new moment, when your uncle gets mad because you got the best of him. the last straw was when i told him that UND's hockey program is like crystal pepsi: Nobody every liked it.

True.... But only US/Can is treated that way. Seems unfair to them and to the other teams that always get put in to a group based on how they finished the previous year.

Maybe this will help. I found this from the IIHF website from last years tourney.
The winner of this year’s championship in Canada is going to play in the first group together with the fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth team.

The second group is going to be made up of this year’s silver and bronze medal winners, the sixth and seventh teams and Germany, which is promoted after winning the second-tier 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division I Group A.
Final standings Edit
Pos Grp Team Pld W OTW OTL L GF GA GD Pts Final result

The only year they broke from their traditional 1-4-5-8-9 and 2-3-6-7-10 groups was in 2018 so that the US could play Canada in the outdoor game.

Ever since they changed the preliminary round format, it doesn't really matter what group you're in anyway.

Really. I love when the Canadians lose. Probably because the crowds show no respect to USA Hockey and boo every time they hit the ice in Canada.

As much as I don’t like Starman’s man crush on UND, he does a great job of calling a game and explaining it well for people that may not know about the game. Also, if you have a young kid playing hockey, sit them down and make them listen to him. He has some great insights and I am starting to enjoy listening to him.
"Hard work will beat talent, if talent doesn't work hard"
Doug Woog - 1990

This quote was written on the chalkboard in a lockeroom in the old Ralph Engelstad arena my Squirt team used the day after the Gophers used it and came into the game ranked #1 in the nation and lost 6-1 to a second rate Whioux team.

Overhead on SiouxSports.com - Why does every thread always turn into a "Gopher" thread? Is there a secret infatuation with them?

The US just went up 3-2 and the pass from Zegras to Drury was simply phenomenal. I mean beyond words amazing.

Is there a large Czech population in Grand Forks? Just watching the crowd's reaction to the no goal one could draw some similarities.

Yes the calls are terrible. Soft. On all sides.

But this is well known. And has been known FOREVER! The teams that play smart, will win.

Finland wins 1-0 and Oliver Wahlstrom throws a dirty hit at the end of the game. Not a good afternoon for the team.

It sucks that they lost, especially losing 1-0. But (now that it’s over)...their HC has bigger fish to catch & fry in 2020...an elusive 3 eyed walleye 😉 Something tDon had on a line, but spit the hook in 2004.

Not Sandy's best coaching job, I would say. Too many of the more productive players didn't play enough.

That was a real nice play to get the W. Swarmed to the puck, created a turnover, and then brought us home on the 2-0.

Can you really blame a tourney like this on the coach? I get it, a coach can manage a shift/game/tourney from a goalie/player management situation, but at the end of the weekend, does the coach play the game? It’s not like these kids are playing their first organized game ever.

Are there any links for the game today - NHL network was unfortunately one channel I didn’t get in my move to spectrum that would have been nice; well that and the science channel.

Game over already and Ranta adds to it with a 10 minute misconduct for shooting after the whistle.

Pretty dumb play by Ranta. Unfortunate as Finland could have really used that power play.

Nevermind. I thought Canada took a penalty with stick to rantas face. Not paying close enough attention.
