I noticed Pinto was going after a few of the Fins late in the quarterfinal game as the US was losing. Seemed Sandelin had him out there simply to goon it up. Not surprised to see this type of play from him after seeing him do it in world jrs.

lol 😉 It’s the third-straight season the two-time defending national champion Bulldogs were swept in St. Cloud, so if you’re the type of fan that believes in good omens, there’s that.

I find it weird that SCSU is as bad as they are this year, though .889 goaltending will sink any team.

From Matt Wellens article today: Senior goaltender Hunter Shepard. The two-time national champion from Cohasset is set to tie an NCAA record with his 104th consecutive start at 7:36 p.m. Friday when the NCHC-leading Hawks visit Amsoil Arena.

If Shepard — who has started every UMD game dating back to Oct. 21, 2017 — makes his 105th straight start in the 7:07 p.m. rematch with North Dakota on Saturday, he’ll break the previous mark set by Cornell’s Ben Scrivens from 2007-10. Shepard is just the latest in what has been a strong run of consistent goaltending for the back-to-back national champion Bulldogs for six seasons now — with the previous five all resulting in NCAA tournament berths and the last three ending in the NCAA championship game.

Miska started 39 of 42 games in 2016-17 when he, Shepard and Deery were all freshmen. Shepard appeared in just two games that season, with one start.

“As much as I hated it, I think it’s a good experience for any goalie or any player to have,” Shepard, 24, said. “I wish they would have not played me. I could have redshirted and came back and played another year” 😉 :biggrin2:

Honestly, I thought it was going to be another UND meltdown against UMD after the Bulldogs tied and then took the lead. Very happy the team persevered. UND’s continued defensive issues is still a concern which I hope they’ll figure out much sooner than later. The Dogs are good and they’ll be a tough team to put away come NCAA tournament time.

5500 seems like a big number for a club team. Do club teams generally draw that well or is there minor league team of some sort in Athens, too?

They play against other SEC teams in a D3 league. My guess would be that given the novelty of hockey down south, they probably get a good following. Looking at their roster, they are about 75% Georgia kids, which really surprises me.

College Hockey News has a fairly interesting look at the decline in attendance across most of the college hockey landscape over the last decade. There are only a few places where attendance has remained stable - most are seeing declines similar to Minnesota. Sports Illustrated published something similar about college football earlier in the month.

I think the comments about price are spot on. But one area they touch on but don’t really have any depth is other entertainment choices. ND has high attendance because there is literally nothing else to do. I’m not saying that to take a dig at ND, but to honestly factor that in. Frankly it’s to their fan/team favor and they’ve run with it, good for them. MN competes with multiple professional sports and entertainment dollars beyond sports, same with colleges like Boston. ND simply isn’t in the same range as that. Don’t “praise” their attendance numbers and make no recognition of limited choices influencing that.
But I’d still say it’s more the money then schools will ever admit. MN killed themselves with the “donation” for seats, that was pure greed on their part. In one year the season tickets tanked and they’ve never recovered. We sit in sec 17, prime viewing, packed in the past. The 4 seats next to us have been empty for 2 years.
If liars pants did catch on fire, watching the news would be so much more fun!

No, it’s okay to take a dig at ND. The other factor there, is people are nuts in that state. ;)

I’d like to see a promotion like Clarkson did - roll back season ticket prices to what they were the year the arena opened. That would pique some interest for sure.

Funny, I've got two in 19, and our row is almost always full. The rows both below and above us can be only half occupied, but ours is full, or nearly so.

No it is weird, maybe center ice is better then us in between the blue line and the goal, I don’t know. We had a whole group of long time regulars, we knew the people around us for years. Now? Almost all of them are gone or moved to no donation sections. The 4 seats next to us are empty, the 2 directly in front of us are empty. 2 on the other side are split between brothers so they’re regulars. I mostly just miss the noise.

And the surrounding seats are NOT empty because of us. I am told I am highly entertaining!

lol - He commented in a recent article that he wished they’d of red shirted him his freshman year when Miska got all the playing time & they finished runner up at United Center. If that had happened, he’d of been a 25 year old red shirt senior (next year) :ahhh:  I guess some players truly revel in playing D1 hockey ☝️☝️

I'm reading a Jess Myers article about Jack Ahcan of JBSU. Do you guys know if tDon tried to get him? I see he's from Savage. That's SW metro to me.

They liked his D partner, Sam Rossini, better. Which to be fair, Rossini was considered a much better prospect at the time. Recruiting kids that young is a crapshoot and hindsight is 20/20.

Hindsight is that the Gophers filled up their recruiting pipeline early and then were not going to even think about creating a spot for players like Ahcan. I don't think Lucia liked the idea of delayed enrollments to begin with and that's a reason why the B10 was putting out the recruiting rule proposal to start the eligibility clock on players post high school so you wouldn't have 21-yr-old freshman with four years of eligibility, they'd just have three years of eligibility. I think he also didn't like the ethics of cutting ties or delaying kids.

The tough thing for Motzko moving forward is being able to convince his recruits to delay their enrollment by playing an extra years of juniors. Mostly he hasn't had to do this yet as the roster his first year was pretty set and this year he had so many holes to fill, maybe he rushed a few kids. So this is going to be either the conversation that happens early in the process before a verbal or later in the process if Motzko decides to grab another player who emerges at 18 or 19 as a player fitting an immediate need instead of a perhaps a verbal recruit.

When asked about early recruiting at St. Cloud State, Motzko often said, 'That's easy... we don't do it.' Well he's got more access to young recruits now at Minnesota. We've already seen him get verbals from Luke Mittelstadt at 15, Matt Knies at 16 and Connor Kurth at 16. I looked at about 10 years of recruiting for Motzko at SCSU and he only had one 15 year old commit in Ryan Poehling and a handful of 16s... Patrick Newell, Michael Eyssimont, Nick Oliver, Robbie Jackson, Ben Hanowski, Kevin Gravel, Dennis Cholowski... I think only two top nhl picks out of that group too.

We will see if the commits, the program and to a lesser extent fans/coahes are okay with players waiting or decommitting. I don't think it's easy when a commit thinks they're going to enroll in 2020-21 and then are told they should play another year of juniors for a spot that might be available in 2021-22. I think Jaxon Nelson was a player who was told to wait and see... he ended up getting to enroll this year. I think Jack Jensen is in a similar spot right now and it doesn't look like there is a spot for him just yet.

Or maybe even worse having difficult conversations with verbal commits when it doesn't look like the spot they talked about earlier in the process is no longer there.

Caufield gets goal number 18, joining some decent names on this list with 18+ and still climbing...

Wild didn't need a goal scorer like that. Happy for the Gophers he'll go pro cuz he was scary every time he was on the ice trying to make up for the rest of his team sucking ass.

Oh ya this was in an 8-4 loss lol

I learned something new yesterday from the STH's meeting with tBob. He said Sandy was the Gophers backup choice for Housley. When Housley went to Buffalo, they wanted Sandy, but he had then committed to the Whioux. It may have been common knowledge, but new to me.

I’d be surprised if he left Wisconsin after this year. The kid is so small and did not impress me in Madison. He has some stick handling ability and a great shot but I can’t imagine he makes an impact at his size in the NHL..
