The people have spoken! No more douchy, hipster, overpriced pizzas! TOTINOS RULES AND PAMP IS THE WISCONSIN BADgers OF PIZZA!

(yes Heggies is way better)

I remember when I was flat broke in college...I had to live on on the cheap Totinos and off brand granola bars from the Harvard Market. I mean I probably could have saved more other ways...but I wasnt giving up my hockey tickets ;)

Totino's Party Pizza is awesome. Don't try to deny it.
Geez, hadn't thought about those in years. In my youth I used to work in a grocery store. We would have those on sale occasionally for 89¢.
We must have worked at the same place. People would come in and buy cases .

Meanwhile, I'll just sit over here with my Pagliai's and smile. :biggrin2:

Heggies used to be made in a glorified pole barn on the west side of 169 where it narrows down just notth of Onamia. Now it has become "Citified" and is made in Milaca in a fancy tip up precast building. The late great Donnie69 loved his Heggies.

The Wahkon Inn premakes their pizzas. A lot like a Heggies. Best part is last Thur the one I ordered came burned. No charge for it, still good & also no charge for the replacement. Tommy (owner) made it up on Crown.😉
Some Thursdays he just throws freebies on the bar and tables

It's good. Probably 8 out of 10 on the ribs scale. The sauce is meh but the ribs don't rely on it.

It is VERY good. I haven’t been there since they closed our EP site several years ago but I used to eat at Bakers whenever I worked at that site.

They used to have a side dish 1-2 days a week of potatoes and onion (with a hint of pepper flakes). So good they would often sell out by noon.

I couldn’t find the GPL Cooks thread.

Pro Tip from Chez Bert....add Busha Browns jerk sauce to any soup and it’ll be next level gourmet.

A little spice with a lot of great flavor.

I found a bit of a gem in Roseville.

Lisu's Tai Taste. It's in the strip mall between Petco and Play it Again Sports.

The egg rolls and wontons are excellent. Pad Thai is good. Pad See-Eiw was really good.

I'm not putting it up to the level of Sen Yai or other top notch Thai restaurants, but it is well worth a lunch visit if you are in the area.

Was driving me nuts too. I'm very disappointed in both you and me for not knowing this.

I know the article touches on it but the Taproom/Brewpub scene has drastically changed the nightlife scene. I have a part time job where I take people on restaurant/craft brew hops (unfortunately I have to share fun facts along the way). Anyway, it's interesting talking to Taproom owners. Their research has shown that people don't have allegiances to any one taproom. They tend to visit many different ones. The advent of Lyft/Uber has made it much easier to do so. That along with the proliferation of food trucks make Taprooms more inviting.

Fun fact: There is a difference between a taproom and a brewpub in Minnesota.

Taproom: Can only sell their own products. Cannot sell other beers or any other type of liquor. They are allowed to distribute to liquor stores and restaurants.

Brewpub: Can have full bars and sell other products besides their own. They are not able to distribute their beers to restaurants or liquor stores. (example off the top of my head are Rock Bottom Brewing, Granite City, Great Waters Brewing (before they closed and became The Loon).

My favorite Chang o haras story:
Back in college, I worked at ogaras. Had an Asian woman call and book a private party in one of the side rooms. Large group of Asians walk into ogaras, looking highly confused. Turns out, it wasn’t the last time someone accidentally booked ogaras instead of chang oharas

Nicely done! I have a post pending approval asking what it was on the Old St. Paul FB site....it was driving me nuts. (I know I know short trip) :)

Hence Forager teaming up with a place in WI, and creating Humble Forager, using Forager recipes, to distro. :D

Also, a distillery and a brewery cannot share the same building, per se. A wall/barrier (to make it "separate spaces") has to exist. And one cannot own multiple serving spaces for the same brewery. Brewpubs, that's okay, though.

And distilleries are about to get screwed, as the Federal Excise Tax is about to expire at the end of the year. HUGE increase in taxes to be paid, which is going to kill a lot of micro-distilleries.

What makes it tough in MN is the law allows them to sell 375 ml bottles and only one per customer. Selling only one small bottle per customer does not allow for a lot of volume.

The disappointment in finding out a favorite restaurant has just plain gone bad. I love Blackbird Cafe, it was a wonderful spot to meet friends for brunch or drinks. Last month I was there and for the first time had “issues”. An egg dish I ordered came to the table with undercooked eggs, I’m talking still raw. The whites were clear and snotty looking. I sent it back. Instead of apologizing and just admitting it wasn’t cooked the chef got pissy. I was polite to the server, but I’m sorry I’m not eating basically a raw egg. But I chalked it up to a bad day in the kitchen.
I returned today and indulged in my favorite menu item, sweet potato biscuits and gravy. I love this dish! But today it was like a completely different item was served. No longer sweet potato (although that’s what’s still listed on the menu) it’s now a plain biscuit. But the once rich thick gravy with some heat and loaded with sausage is now thin, literally tasteless and had strange pink chunks of meat. It was not pork. Honestly it looked like dog food and was inedible. WTF happened? New owners? Cost cutting gone horribly wrong? They no longer even care? Who knows, all I know is 2 strikes and they’re not getting a third.
But I’m sad and I miss the biscuits :anger:

Saying this with a bit of shame, but after 13+ years at my residence, finally tried the Crossroads Deli buffet they have on Sundays. It's literally a block away.

Wow. This is one damn good buffet. Sure, you pay for it (buffet + coffee was about $19) but it is worth it. The wide selection of food, and (this is the key) the QUALITY of the food is outstanding. Highly recommend.

I believe the airport locations of Chick-Fil-A are only licensed by Chick-Fil-A but not official franchises so they are run differently. I would agree that everyone I've ever been to at an airport have been terrible.

Since someone brought up Chik-Fil-A...

Culver's and Chik-Fil-A are the only fast food restaurants I've been to in the last 15 years that are well-staffed, clean, and have exceedingly polite and competent employees, no matter what location I go to (aforementioned airport locations excluded). The fast food industry is notorious for attracting the bottom of the barrel workforce, so how do these 2 companies manage to find these employees? I can't imagine they pay that much better wages than places like McD's, Wendy's, BK, Subway, etc... do they?

Likely it starts with corporate and/or the arm.that oversees franchise management, whick instills a certain level of service all the way down.

I worked one summer for Taco Bell in 1984 and back then at least they were very strict about their employees understanding a great level.of detail and customer service was highly paramount to employee retention and advancement.
Currently under construction.

One of my first jobs was Knights Of Columbus, I was a dish rat. The pay was crap, but the environment was awesome. It was a true team attitude. Even when the job sucked, it wasn't bad overall, because of that attitude.

Just because you HAVE many BBQ places, doesn't mean they are good. *sigh*
Where in the heck is there a BBQ joint in Tonka?

Doing a quick google search, they count Lone Spur as a BBQ place. Um, no.

Nope, Famous Dave's has been out of my consideration set for years.
Never had Granite City. Never wanted to.

I'm not an economics major, but why would 1 struggling restaurant buy another? Seems like throwing money out the window.

Either the purchase price was very very low, and at that price the buyer believes that with some changes they can turn the place around and make a profit...... OR: the buyer overpaid, does not have a good business plan and will ultimately wish they had never thrown money at it.

They may be after the locations. In general the Granite City locations and the physical restaurants are much nicer so FD could be trying to improve its footprint and upgrade its brand.

GC in MG had decent food when it first opened 10 years ago? We stopped going for dinner not long after though, although I'd go occasionally for a beer since some of my co-workers at the time liked it for happy hour.

El Taco Riendo on central is burning down. Sounds like the firefighters have been pulled out, letting the block go.

Ouch. Love that place.

I was informed Thirty Bales is selling big ten subs. I honestly don’t know if this is new, but it’s on the menu!
