Fishing 2020 Edition

Post by Bladepuller » Fri May 08 9:58 am

As I sit looking at beautiful Wahkon Bay this morning I'm reminded how much anticipation I had as a kid for tomorrow, opening day of the MN walleye and pike (aka Gators) season.
In 2019 I was so busy finishing odds and ends on a new house that I never bought a license. That will not happen this year, for sure.
My posts will have a Mille Lacs theme but there are 15000? lakes in MN.
I HATE :censored: RED! I'm now developing a strong dislike to green also.
TO GOALIES!!! :drunk:

BTW Keep the helmets on for the NA & intros...You ain't that special.

Good luck everyone going out this weekend! Too bad it's not going to be a little nicer.

I'm really hoping that my Canada trip in late July isn't going to be cancelled...

Going out myself...gonna be a cold one. Wind has an icy component to it.

My fishing advice for tomorrow: Gortex over wool!

It got down to 26 last night here near Cass Lake. Supposed to be 27 tonight, 25 tomorrow night and 22 Sunday night. Daytime highs are all in the 45 degree range. I hooked up my water here 2 weeks ago and have been just fine leaving it on. Sunday night I am gonna be a bit worried about it and then I will have to drain it because we are leaving Monday and Monday’s overnight low is 24 degrees and I am not going to change my pump breaking again.

Not a good fishing opener for sure. Lots of traffic up here though, but the wind makes it tough to be out on the water.

I'll be keeping it local in the metro this year. I'm sure it'll be packed. Still just passing time until June though...

Very little activity in Isle when I went to the hardware store. Feels more like deer hunting than fishing.

Picked up the boat from the shop yesterday, kudos to Brick's Boatworks for getting it fixed in time (replaced water pump impeller). But not going out yet, too cold for this old man and too many other projects to get to. Maybe later in the week if it warms up.

Oh yeah, my dumbass move for the month was yesterday. Kinda a twofer. First I chose not to put the lock onto the hitch when picking the boat up, then I crossed a rail crossing too fast. Yep, popped the hitch off. Safety chains held and I got it stopped with no bumper damage. Fortunately an empty road and I knew what happened immediately so slowed gradually to the shoulder. Embarrassing to say the least.

Snowing hard in the Aitkin area. Warm inside the cabin, though. :dup:

Might try to go out late afternoon, if the wind stays down.

This is about as slow an opener that I can remember. Not nearly the boats I thought I'd see today, and a lot of boats just drifting through spots....nobody seems to be working it too hard. Probably trying to keep the hands warm.

Went out of Liberty Beach on ML. Got there around 930. Left at 130. Caught over a dozen. Mostly in the 17-19” range. At the end it was just miserable. Cold and snow. Everything was wet. Planned on staying the night, but are headed home now instead.

I stuck local and hit for the cycle. Got walleye, pike, musky, perch, crappie, and bass. Granted not high numbers of any of them, but fun all the same.

Just trolling a spinner with a fathead.
