Actually for a voters poll that list is fairly solid and complaining on the whole would be nit-picking.
They missed a couple but that's OK. I'm outside of their demographic.

George Thorogood and Joan Jett (as much as I love 'em) have made careers (Jett's being a solo career) out of covers. Just saying.

Agreed. I think we also might agree that the classic artists knew their lanes and their limitations a little better. 😂

My point is that cover bands aren't really THAT talented, sometimes. There is that gray area, like Elton John who can perform like a mofo, and write the music, but is not a lyricist. There are others (the aforementioned Thorogood and Jett) who can't really do either, but they are awesome cover bands overall. :)

True singer-songwriters (whether solo or bands) are the elite, IMO.

Pretty broad brush you're painting with there. If you mean bands that would play at places like the old Iron Horse I get your point. Bands that just try to recreate the original are more than likely talented but overall not that interesting if that's all they do. One of the worst covers by a big name band was The Foo Fighters doing a cover of The Who doing a Mose Allison cover "Young Man Blues." It was a ham fisted attempt at best. Van Halen covering "Won't Get Fooled Again" wasn't too hot either.

There is that gray area, like Elton John who can perform like a mofo, and write the music, but is not a lyricist.
Do you really think that a musician or band that has a lyricist makes them a cover act? Do you consider Elton John a cover act because Bernie Taupin wrote lyrics for him?

There are others (the aforementioned Thorogood and Jett) who can't really do either, but they are awesome cover bands overall. :)
I agree George Thorogood covers a lot of different artists but he keeps it within a musical genre. But he's really not apeing anybody's act. He really puts his stamp on a lot of great songs and puts on a bad ass show. Plus he's had great musicians playing with him. They definitely pass the Bandstand test. Plus he did write some of his best known and popular songs like I Drink Alone and Bad to the Bone.

Not much of an opinion on Joan Jett other than girl groups are pretty lame. It's the musical equivalent of watching girls hockey. I've heard enough of her over the years to have zero interest in her act. Some of her covers sound like I'm listening to the Go Go's.

True singer-songwriters (whether solo or bands) are the elite, IMO.
For example? I can't think of too many elite bands that qualify other than Pink Floyd. Even the "elite" bands have a history of doing covers throughout their careers. Your favorites, The Grateful Dead and The Ramones did plenty of covers. In addition to that Robert Hunter provided lyrics for a ton of the Dead's songs. I've never considered them a cover band. Do you?

The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Gary Moore, Johnny Winter, John Mayall's Blues Breakers, The Allman Brothers all did covers. When they did, they owned them. I hear them doing covers as a way of paying respect to the originals.

As for Elvis, who cares if he didn't write his own material, he was a great performer, a great singer. Who did it better than Elvis?
Here's The Who covering Elton John:

Dr. John and Johnny Winter: A killer cover.

Things (to save space)
Everyone does a cover at some point. Again, I love Thorogood and Jett, but they basically made their careers on cover songs.
E John wrote original music for Taupin's lyrics. That's different. That's like a group each contributing their strengths to make something happen. Most artists are like that.

The elite musicians write and perform their own music. For bands, it might be a couple members that contribute, and find a couple others to plug in the holes.

As far as the Go-Go's comment, the Go-Go's definitely have their own sound. They recently released a new song, and yep, that's the Go-Go's. You cannot honestly say that the Runaways, Heart, or even Vixen have that similar sound. One may argue the Bangles should be included in that group, and it's a fair point, but even THEY don't sound like the Go-Go's.

Add to that, Babes In Toyland or L7. They definitely don't sound like the Go-Go's.

If you started a band with a completely MN-centric name what would it be? A few ideas:

RIP Billy Joe Shaver

He never gained acclaim as a singer, but he was probably the most iconic songwriter of the Outlaw Country movement.

Love Albert Collins. There is a clip from the same concert of George & Albert doing 'Madison Blues' that is really good.

Where do you think I pulled it from?

Saw him once at the Roy Wilkins. "This is my first beer on the tour!" People jeered a bit. He then said, "I said, 'my first BEER'!" :D

Great live show.

I saw War on Drugs with my son a few years ago at the Palace Theatre in St. Paul. Excellent concert although there were times I wish I was wearing a set of ear plugs!!

I feel this is a "deconstructed" version of this song. Didn't like it at first, but grew on me.

Have had this disk in my Concert DVD/Blu-Ray collection for a long time, and it's seen multiple plays. Not for everybody, but what is? Having helped raised a daughter who played in a youth orchestra, I thought it would have been fun to be a parent watching her participate in a rock concert like this.

Some musical 'what ifs'.  Trying to stay away from, "What if Jim Morrison didn't die" since there's far too many examples and I find it less interesting, but circumstances behind what led to deaths might work.  For instance:

-What if Brian Jones had some self control?
-What if Kurt Cobain found an ounce of self-esteem?
-What if John never meets Yoko?
-What if the Beatles don't replace Pete Best and Stuart Sutcliffe? Probably very little difference from John and Paul but does George not emerge from under their shadow until they breakup?
-What if Faith Hill got the job as a backup singer for Reba's band?
-What if Dennis Wilson never met Charles Manson? Sharon Tate possibly never dies among other things.
-What if Dave Mustaine was never kicked out of Metallica?
-What if Roger Waters learned to play with others?
-What if Bob Marley never agreed to the charity concert that wrongly tied him to one of the warring factions running for election in Jamaica?
-What if The Kinks weren't banned in the US from 1965-1969?
-What if Elvis' twin didn't die at birth?
-What if Bon Scott never introduces the rest of AC/DC to Brian Johnson before his death?
-What if CSY never allowed in N?
-What if Janet Jackson never let her nip slip?
-What if Chris Cornell joined Faith No More instead of Mike Patton?

What if NWA never broke up?

That's a huge one. As talented as they were (and each did/has done brilliant solo work) would their absolutely potential have been realized otherwise had they never collaborated? And George had one of the best solo records of all time yet he wasn't originally a songwriter.

And what if The Beatles manager Brian Epstein doesn't die at age 32? Maybe he would have held the band together.

That was such an awesome update (cover?) of the song. It made it SO much better. For those who haven't heard either (first is orig, second is cover):

Spotify suggested in my Friday 'Release Radar' playlist a song from Grey Daze whom I had never heard of.

Turns out it was a band Chester Bennington was in before Linkin Park and goddamn if I'm not liking what I've heard so far.

I didn't go to the Sunday show but I was at Saturdays (2nd to last). Jerry was not well but it was still awesome being at Soldier Field with 60,000 Dead Heads.
