Except at a bar I have never watched Red Zone. I just dont care about the NFL that much. I guess if I still played Fantasy I would though so I am obviously in the minority.

I watched it a little bit back when I had the full cable package. It made for decent entertainment when the Vikings weren't on (done or playing Monday, Thursday, or SNF). It was nice for fantasy football purposes but I'd probably never actively pay for it again unless it was part of my cable package.

I still love it, and have been retired from FFL for 3 years now. It is like ESPN NFL Primetime on steroids.

Yeah but I stopped caring about that show in the Mid 1990s. All NFL shows have been "hey look at me" more than they are about facts and stories since around then. It is predictable nonsense. (see also: every show on ESPN)

So our spectrum installation fell through (I swear these companies do not communicate within divisions) - I made it explicitly clear we don’t have cable to our house and the guy shows up and says “I can’t dig because utilities aren’t marked”....well duh, this is why I told this to the person on the phone!
Anyways, I still cancelled Dish because I am fed up with them and my billing cycle was ending and didn’t want to give them another penny. (It took an hour just to cancel my service - at least half of that waiting on hold).

Long story short I have no tv service. I could live without except for the channels the Twins and Gopher hockey are on. I suppose there is no cheaper way to watch them without having to purchase a cable or satellite package? I have crappy internet so streaming would not be ideal.

At least I’m saving 150$ this month! That alone is almost enough to just give up on tv and go back to listening to games on the radio....

Yes, not only did I have to go to the courthouse and pay for a copy of the death certificate, I had to track down a fax machine. It was in 2012.

I have been a customer since 1999...
I went through their online chat Friday around noon. Who then gave me a number to call. Hold for 10 minutes. Then talked to one guy for 5 minutes. That was it. They are sending a box for the equipment.

I love Xfinity and have never had a service issue that most complain about. But the price is steep. I am willing to pay for quality in this case.

I basically cut the cord, have the utmost basic with Xfinity, and only had only issue, which was taken care of without a lot of hassle. Been with them 15 years or so?

I cut the cord 5 years ago when I remodeled my basement and didn't feel like running cable because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. SO glad that I did and I will never look back.

But it’s good to have the cable for resale. One of the things I look for when buying a house are option for setting up a room.

My old house had cable ports in two spots in the living room so we could change furniture around. It was nice.

Traditional cable is dying. Its impact on resale (probably not material to begin with) will diminish to nothing.

I'm in the same boat. Love the simplicity of being able to reach all programming on a single system/remote. But as you say the cost is steep.

You are mixing up cable and internet. I just dropped comcast cable but kept internet and upgrade to gigabit. Which is nowhere near that speed but trying to get that fixed.

Only reason I have Xfinity. Get the fastest home internet for streaming, and that's it. About half the cost of what I was paying (basic + sports package).

I do have the older DVRs but still, it just goes to show the inconsistency depending who you speak with.
I wouldn’t be shocked to get a bill in a couple months because I never returned their equipment.

While I do not have the means to use it for target practice, I have considered throwing it off the roof and then going office space on it. :club: :club:

I've had no issues with Xfinity so far either (2.5 years). I can change my subscription/contract right through the app, add/drop premium shows through the app, and if I ever have an issue with signal not getting through (I had a blue screen on my basement TV a couple times) I just tweeted at them and got a DM response within 15 minutes. No time waiting on hold, and resolution was completed within 25 minutes.

I had the Hopper3. Great DVR with Sling built in. It's the top of the line, so they definitely want it back. They also want the end of the dish/receiver as well. Which is fine with me.

My brother-in-law just did their closet through Costco. Someone came out and did a consulation and then you get 10% back in the form of a Costco gift card or something similar.

I couldn't find the Computers thread anywhere so I'll post it here.

I had a really big scare this week when a power outage took out my hard drive. Fortunately I was able to recover the files easily, but it was at that time I remembered that my external storage device had gone out many months ago.

That's all fixed but I'm also looking into a backup service and wanted to see if anyone had recommendations. Right now I have about 400GB of pictures and videos and expect that to grow, so that cuts down my options a little bit.

i was looking into the Western Digital MyCloud. i like that i can configure it to backup phones and computers, anywhere so long as there is an internet connection. But whats kind of worrysome is that if the device, much like an external drive, gets shorted out or corrupted in some way, then its goodbye data.

Looking at cutting the cord on Charter. YouTube Tv seems to be the best option for us. Only concern is wifi. We have about 3300sf on the main and upper floor. I work from home and need a solid router and wifi single in the home. I currently have a separate extender for the basement that has a Xbox. Looking at the Orbi or eero. Anyone here have any experience with either of these or recommendations?

So I'm looking at getting my parents a Bluetooth/wifi audio hub for their stereo system.

Before I dive too deep in researching, does anyone have a system like this where you can plug into your stereo system, and then allows you (via Bluetooth or wifi) to control the music from your phone? It's a fairly old stereo, still in great shape, but it's probably from the early 2000's.

Chromecast Audio would have been perfect for this, but Google discontinued it apparently...

They don't have iPhones, so the AirPlay or whatever it's called isn't an option.

I would try this using Bluetooth.... Will work with any BT phone I would suspect.

Technology nerds... I need your help.

I haven't bought a new TV in many years, and I'm super confused by all of the options out there. Last week I bought a Samsung 7 Series UHD during a Black Friday sale. I had it up for several days, but ended up taking it back because the color was so washed out. No matter how much I adjusted it, the picture looked like garbage. I watch a lot of hockey, so the washed out picture with all of the white ice was a huge problem.

I understand that UHD isn't top of the line, but it was still disappointing. My 7+ year old Vizio has a better picture than what I saw from that Samsung.

Any recommendations for a good TV under $500? I'd like the size to be somewhere between 43" and 50"... which is probably considered pretty small by today's standards.

I'd like to explore possibly getting YouTube TV and ditching Comcast. What kind of options on the TV is required for that?

I love my 50" Panasonic Viera Plasma. Great color, and it was $500 a couple years ago, so I imagine it's cheaper now (and came with free delivery from the local Best Buy).

You will get a very solid 50 inch for under 500 w/tax

That TV has ROKU TV so it has YouTube TV built in. You just need the internet connection.

I do worry though that you simply didn't calibrate the Samsung correctly for the room.

Samsung usually makes a pretty good TV (my 1080p just won't die and the picture is outstanding), but I wonder if you're running into problems with the LED (OLED, QLED, etc) technology adjusting for the whiteness of the ice. I've heard of some people having this problem with the technology. You could look at LCD technology sets and (if they still exist) Plasma.

You might do yourself a favor by going to a specialty TV store (Halston Entertainment in Golden Valley is highly recommended by friends if you live in the West Metro) or even Best Buy and talking to someone about the differences in the technologies. They probably could demo what you'd see on a mostly white background (skiing, hockey, etc.) and then you can see what tech works best for you.

Did you do a software update after getting it set up? That really helped with when I bought my Samsung.

I was going to buy a 42", but it cost $75 for delivery. However, free delivery for 46" or larger or something like that, so went with the 50" for $75 more in price, free delivery. ;)

I knew plasma was on the outs, thought they were still around. I hate the LCD picture, it looks too cold/computerized/artificial (used to have one for my 2nd tv).

I have the 55" version of the TCL that Bonin linked. Love it for watching hockey games. Only real complaint is that the reds are pinkish.

I've lost patience with our 2014 Nissan Pathfinder (which we purchased brand new). The engine has always been great, but there has been one minor problem after another since it was only 2 years old. Doors not latching properly in cold weather... mysterious rattles... loose weatherstripping... a broken tailgate button... and on and on... We had planned on keeping it for 10-12 years, but I'm fed up with the little things. It has 72,000 miles on it, and if we're going to make a change, we should probably do it now while we can still get *something* back in resale.

Any recommendations for vehicles (preferrably mid-large SUV type) with 3 rows of seats?

Timing is good with the Auto Show coming up to see what's available.

We're going to be in the market soon too for a similar type of vehicle. Kia Telluride and the Hyundia Palisades may fit your bill. Edmunds did a review comparing those 2 with the Ford Explorer that I found pretty helpful

My brother has been a mechanic for Hyundai for 8ish years, and that is one of two of their vehicles (the other being the Genesis) that he recommends.

If you ask him now he'd probably say the Palisade, but the Telluride (basically the same car) is better looking.

Nope. He says it's passable, but far from his first choice. He only throws his weight behind a vehicle he 100% trusts. While he's been at Hyundai for 8ish years, he's been a mechanic for dealerships for 20 years, and in general 24 years overall.

I’ll be at the auto show looking for a 3 row SUV as well. Going to replace my Altima so we finally have a vehicle that can carry 2 kids, all their stuff, and our lab more comfortably that we can in our Murano

We owned a 2006 Pilot that hummed along with minimal maintenance until we finally sold it this year.

We also purchased a 2014 GMC Acadia Danali which had problem after problem. Everything was recall or covered under warranty, but we sold that after owning it for less than a year because we didn’t want to be stuck with repair costs when the warranty ran out. We ended up buying another Pilot (2015) which we still own and have never had a needed repair. We knew it would be weird owning two Pilots but didn’t care because they were great cars and so dependable.

I highly recommend them.

We had one (probably a 2007 or 2008) and it was fantastic until my wife got in an accident and totaled it in 2015. We looked at another one and ended up buying a Murano because that particular refresh made it feel bigger and more cavernous than the one we had. Neither of us felt comfortable in it.

The newer ones from what I've heard are more like the own we owned so I'm sure it will be on our short list. We never had any cargo space issues with it and we also had very few maintenance issues with it.

I loved the 2006 pilot. The size is great and the windows give wonderful visibility.

The newer 2016+ models caught some flack for looking too “minivan” and I’ll admit I don’t like that. But I think they tweaked the most recent year to make them more SUV in appearance.

If the Pilot feels too big they came out with a 2 row version called the Passport. It is just barely smaller than the Pilot but larger than the CRV.

Unless you’re looking for a Tahoe/Suburban 4WD Full size SUV, Honda should have something for you.
