Per a couple online sites: “ The largest temperature change ever recorded within 24 hours took place in Loma, Montana. An extreme 103 F temperature range in less than a day occurred in January of 1974!”
But this was a rise in temp: the temperature rose from −54 to 49 °F (−47.8 to 9.4 °C) .

They don’t want the players sitting around for hours together in the clubhouse, and It’s easier to just give up and reschedule when you don’t have to worry about the fans. (And there was enough chance of periodic Storms that would continue to cause delays)
