Postby Jupiter » Thu 1/01/09 12:09 am

Time for a new Headline News thread for 2009. The 2008 thread is locked, but you can still view it in the "Old Discussions" area of the site.

This is a place for big headlines and also a place for those smaller interesting stories that you may find on the internet....

Please avoid getting in to heated political or religeous talk. It's really for your own good.

Senate plans to bar Blagojevich's pick Roland Burris from being seated.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/nation ... 2148.story

Without getting too political, this smells like typical Chicago maneuvering on Blago's part. I have a few of my own theories why he's making such a bold move, but I doubt any of them would work. There's just too much at stake for people to look the other way.

Then again, it is Chicago...

Give me a ring the next time you're back in the Cities. We can go watch Sid Hartman sob uncontrollably now that teams are starting to leave the Metrodome.

If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?

The real joke is the Senate trying to assert (Against the Constitution and Supreme Court precedent) that they can choose who to allow and who not too. Last time I checked, one-third of the Senate can be turned over every two years by the electorate. The prospect that these elected public servants can decide that they do not want to seat a legally appointed representative (best I know he is an American citizen, resident of Illinois, and of legal age to serve) makes me sick. The Senate can only question it based upon elections, returns, and qualification of the member. Burris was not elected, and the qualification levy can only raised on the man who is currently the legal Governor of Illinois. It's amazing what the media and sensationalism leads people into believing what they can and cannot do. If SOS White wants to withhold his signature, that will at least delay things a bit but I seriously doubt any court would allow that to stand (as that post has Constitutional bearing on this issue). I fully detest the activities that Blagojevich was allegedly involved in, but it's amazing how many people (including the national press and United States leaders) who cannot look past the fact that the man may have been involved in (or the initiator of) criminal activities is still Governor until he's not Governor, and there's little that anyone can do to disallow this nomination on any grounds that I have heard mentioned.

That being said, I fully expect the nomination to be blocked and this willful neglect of the law will be a greater crime than anything Blagojevich could have done.

Over the next two days the two, who have been charged with felony theft, bought six vehicles -- a Mitsubishi convertible, a Buick Roadmaster, a Ford F-350 truck, a Ford Ranger truck, a Ford Focus and a Dodge Neon, the sheriff said Wednesday in a news release.

Yeah because if I had $250,000 the first thing I would want is a Dodge Neon....

This goes beyond stupidity what these two did.

The best and worst of America in one article.

airline passengers mis-hear a conversation amongst a muslim family, FBI takes family into custody. Realizes almost immediately there's nothing amiss. FBI personally tells the airline the family was a victim of misunderstanding, and that they should be allowed on a flight. airline says no (according to the family).

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/01/01/family ... index.html

and there's also the ubiquitous lawsuit.

Interesting article about the two pending senate seats (MN and ILL.) and how it affects the filibuster situation. Currently...with 98 senators seated the Dems need to peel off one vote for cloture (to beat a filibuster). However, if only one of those seats are granted for a limited time (such as...if one is delayed due to a Coleman legal battle or the Ill. seat being challeged because of "Blago-gate" or if they call for a special election) then the Dems would need 2 votes for cloture (because the math changes). It's actually better for them right now to have neither of those seats filled than to just have one filled. They only get back to needing 1 vote for cloture if both Frankin and Burris are allowed to be seated. So regardless of the legalities of those situations or what one believes about who should justly be seated, we'll likely see challenges from the Reps. in effort to protect their filibuster a bit more (something...that may not be right...but that you'd probably see from either side if the situations were reversed).

Well YOUR point is that GWB was a bad President, and are likening Franken to him. My point (in response) is that Franken is not corrupt, he abhors corruption, and that represents a big difference between the two. Bush is a smart man, no doubt. Not anybody can become President. Problem is he used his intelligence (and the name didn't hurt) to influence others and use the promise of influence to secure power. If Franken's run as Senator is similar to Bush's run as President, it would be a complete about-face for him.

Not to mention getting into Yale and managing to secure a degree as a Bush is a little different than getting into Harvard and graduating with honors as a kid from Minnesota.

I didn't vote for Franken, and am not particularly thrilled he's our new Senator, but I don't let this cloud reality.

Putting politics aside. Norm's had some really strange elections (outside of his mayoral campaigns).

First, he loses the governorship to a pro rassler.
Second, his senate opponent gets killed in a plane crash.
Third, his bid for a 2nd term turns into a recount fiasco against the guy who used to play Stuart Smalley on SNL.

Again, nothing against the guy, but he's gotta be wondering "what the hell????"

One of my favorite parts of the paper is the "East Metro Police Blotter" in the Strib's East Metro extra on Wednesdays.
http://www.startribune.com/local/east/3 ... =KArksUUUU

Here are four gems from today's paper - the last one is most definitely a future Darwin Award recipient.

OAKDALE
DEC. 12
Lost. A man called police to report that while he was doing construction work, on the 1500 block of 15th Street N., he lost his cell phone in the snow.

DEC. 15
Animal complaint. A woman called to report that there was a fox near her mailbox 30 minutes earlier, on the 1600 block of Granada Avenue. The woman said the fox was not aggressive and did not look sick.

Suspicious person. A woman called 911 from the 4800 block of Grenwich Road because she thought someone was trying break into her house but then she realized it was the townhouse association shoveling her front steps. An officer went to the location and found the same.

ST. PAUL
DEC. 16
Fire. Firefighters responded to a car on fire in a garage on the 1700 block of Nebraska Avenue E. Burning charcoal was placed under the engine to warm it up in an attempt to start the vehicle.
