1) Swallowing something gets it into the digestive system. I don't know how that would build immunity.
2) If she is having cramps immediately after sex, then maybe. But 20 weeks after? Not hardly.

Regarding your first point, things in the digestive system don't stay in the digestive system. I don't know the validity of the claims, but can (and do) things you swallow make it into your bloodstream? Absolutely. How else would any other oral medication work, such as ibuprofen/Tylenol, blood pressure medications, etc?

They seep through the lining of one's stomach. Alcohol works the same way, only alcohol passes through much easier than a lot of things do. Seems strange that a living organism (semen) would manage to live through the acid in one's stomach, but I am no medical expert, nor do I claim to be, so I guess it is possible.

It's a statistical thing. The acid will kill off nearly all of them, but statistically speaking, there's a chance some survive.

Well, I don't know anything about the medical claims, but I'm guessing the point of ingesting the sperm is TO break them up and use their amino acids, etc. in basic metabolic function.

Sounds to me like she should ingest it a few times before getting pregnant to build up her immunity. Then she would not get morning sickness at all.

The Paul Ryan pick should placate those on the right that didn't think Romney was conservative enough. Interesting choice. I wonder if it will sway people in the middle?

Polling has shown that roughly 5 percent of likely voters "prefer some other candidate" outside of the main nominees. I would guess that some of those are politically libertarian, and I think Ryan's economic policies help pick those votes up. I also think Ryan will help the GOP in Wisconsin, strictly out of familiarity with the candidate (apolitically, that definitely does sway some undecideds).

I'm more interested to see how this effects polling in Florida, because of Ryan's proposed Medicare reform and the overwhelming demographic in that state potentially affected by it. I think we're looking at a race similar to 2000, where one swing state is gonna dictate the election.

Trying to make a splash? Unfortunately, all you have to do is make a claim that is seemingly plausible (In science, politics, conspiracy theories) and there's not enough critical thinking for people to call cowcrap when these kinds of things come up.

I did some more checking. He is an evolutionary psychologist, for what that's worth.

From another article:
"Gallup has long been making headlines as a proponent of the healing nature of sperm.
In 2002, he made waves when he concluded that exposure to semen offered anti-depressant qualities."

(That was based on hormones and is certainly more feasible than this latest thing)

And Row--thanks for fixing my blood statement.

By "again", are you referring to the Texas Bell Tower Sniper, which took place at UT-Austin?

Yeah I read too far into it. Mass shootings in Texas immediately brings my mind to the Bell Tower Sniper.

Sounds more like an eviction gone bad than a "mass shooting." One officer dead, one wounded, one female civilian killed, suspect in custody.

Heard a story on the news today about a man wielding an 11" knife in Times Square. When the cops came he lunged at them with the knife. Cops shot and killed him. Now his family is saying they used excess force. "They should have fired warning shots in the air."
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense to fire warning shots in the air in Times Square.

Jim, Republicans are destroying our country. You may never agree with me on that, and if we're all very lucky they may never succeed, but they're doing everything they can to push us towards a food crisis, an economic crisis, and a complete destruction of the freedoms that made the US unique. They're doing it because it's the only way they can win elections, by catering to the crazy right-wing religious nut jobs who can't accept the scientific fact that humans are destroying the planet, by catering to anti-government paranoia about debt ceilings even if it wrecks our currency, and by catering to gay-hating, sex-hating throwbacks even if it means good, innocent people suffer at the hands of government oppression. They work to take away our freedoms while talking about how much they love those freedoms, and I'm sick of people who overlook their terrible lies and pandering propaganda and damaging legislation because they want to see a particular tax policy tried out. You have voted for people who want to limit the freedoms of Americans, who want Government to intrude more on our daily lives, and who are willing to drive our environment and our economy off a cliff to win an election. I really wish you'd wake up to the way Republicans are screwing you over, but until you do, yeah, we probably shouldn't talk any more.

Holy cow, I hope you do ok with patching/coping. My 2 cents: it's ok to have strong political beliefs, but it's best to not define one's self and relationships by those (except if it's your job--but maybe that's why politics suck?). If the moron wants to throw a friendship away over that (and clearly not able to rationally examine a position or have an evidence-based discussion), I say you're probably better off without it in the long run.

So yeah, it's been a great evening.

Dillo, I had a similar breakdown of a conversation with my brother in law 3 years ago that started with a simple picture I posted on Facebook. Do you remember seeing or reading about the billboard that was up in Mason City, Iowa about 3 years ago that the North Iowa Tea Party put up? It was the one that compared the POTUS with Lenin and Hitler? The premise was that the POTUS was going the way of turning America into a Marxist society...blah blah blah. I posted the picture and typed two words above the post of the picture, "Ballsy Iowans". My brother in law took that into meaning I supported the picture. How from those two words do you deduce that I support the North Iowa Tea Party?

He then started a big private message fight and got both of my sisters involved. He called me and my father all sorts of names and said that if he had his way that his wife, my sister, and his son would never see us again. He included my father in all of this because I had to got my point of view from him, so let's just throw the entire family under the bus. It wasn't just until recently that I have even spoken to him. It took 3 years for him to realize how ridiculous his political point of view was about one picture. I told him that I was over shortly after it started. Differing political point of views are apart of this country, but unfortunately it is one big problem with our government. Each side spends so much time and our money to say that the other side is :censored: ing us over!

Anyway, I think that with time this argument may go away but I don't know your friend and his beliefs. It's too bad that politics, IMHO, divides this country just about as much as racial prejudice. Ever watch a parade and how some people treat a politician? Such as if a DUMBACRAT was walking and then they walk up to a REBUMBLICAN sitting on the curb and that person will be down right rude to the politician? Or like how my wonderful home state of Iowa treated the newly anointed running mate of Mitt Romney yesterday at the State Fair? It's down right ridiculous.

:rantonoff:

The workplace rule of thumb (don't discuss politics or religion) should apply to FB too. You're not going to change anyone's mind, and only bad things can come of it.

I have an aunt that is a huge DFL supporter. One of her brothers (my uncle) is a big GOP supporter. Watching those two bicker on FB is really uncomfortable. Quite frankly, I'm embarrassed for both of them.

If anything Dillo, I feel bad for your friend. He must have a pretty miserable existence if a picture sets him off on a rant like that. Yikes, he sounds like a barrel of laughs. I have family and friends like that too. I don't even bother bringing up politics anymore because I'd rather not spend our time together arguing over dumb stuff that won't change anyone's mind. I do find it ironic that people like your friend who fancy themselves as loving and tolerant go nuclear when anyone dares bring up a different point of view.

I don't want to turn this into a Left-bashing fest since I don't view everyone on the Left as being this moronic and I see great faults in some folks on the Right as well, but based on personal experiences with some of the liberals who believe "how can anyone possibly think any other way than liberal", I'm not surprised. Throughout the recent Healthcare debate, I've disagreed with some of Obama's key policies on the matter and apparently that makes me a white supremacist, which I've been called to my face. Those of you who have met me in person or at least have seen me know that there is a massive clue as to why this is so ridiculous.

Anyway to be clear, I'm neither liberal nor conservative (actually moderately authoritarian with some libertarian leanings). I just make fun of liberals more often because most of my friends happen to be liberals.

If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?

Or possibly your soon to be former friends.

Hilarious (not really) that someone could or would call you a white supremacist for a perfectly reasonable policy disagreement.

CDC releases it's obsesity statistics. By state (not including DC) Minnesota is #36 most obese (or #15 most fit). The only state more fit than us in the current WCHA and Big Ten footprints is Colorado at #50 most obese (#1 most fit).

It's kind of funny. If you've met me, you would know that I don't look the least bit caucasian. To be fair though, it seemed like these people just ran out of insults and pulled whatever anti-conservative ammo they had left.

On a side note, one of my favorite targets for the last few weeks has been Applellites who shamed Ralph Lauren for manufacturing their clothes in China, not just the Olympic uniforms.

Detroit Store Tries To Draw Kids To School With New Shoes

BCK, made an arrangement with the school district to give away a free pair of black leather Nikes to every student who comes to class on Oct. 3, the day when students are counted and their numbers used as the basis for per-pupil funding from the state and federal government.

I applaud the shoe owner for voluntarily getting involved in his community (assuming he isn't getting some sort of kick back from the district which the article doesn't mention so I will assume not). However it would be a really awesome if he was rewarding perfect attendance through the quarter or a "B" average something that requires some personal accountability. All this is, is another scam and loophole.

If one day's attendance is used to determine funding (to whatever extent) by the fed and local government it just shows how lazy these people are and is one good example that the educational system is going straight down the dump.

Here's what Erskine Bowles, Bill Lewinski's former Chief of Staff had to say about Paul Ryan. :D

You might also remember him as being part of the Bowles-Simpson Commission. The same commission that Barry Sotero is ignoring.

I was half asleep and dreaming the other morning with the news on and thought they said that Mitt had picked Rex Ryan as his running mate. Now that would have been an entertaining choice.

I think a one-day attendance count (actually, it's 2 days per year) is a pretty efficient and transparent way to get a representation of how many kids are in each school, especially when you start talking about doing it on the state and federal level. Using something like average attendance over a year, you'd spend a lot more money auditing the data to make sure it's accurate (and a bunch of ambiguity over dropouts and transfers); and it's a lot more representative of who's attending classes than using enrollment numbers. Especially in the light of trying to reduce the overhead costs of managing schools, I'm not sure why this is a problem.

This was more what I was getting at, it isn't very representative of who is attending classes when you get everyone to show up for a day with a pair of Nikes.

I'm about 95% sure that Minnesota schools are required to report pupil-day totals. So a single snow day kills a school because of the mass number of students out for a full day. I remember talking with a number of my teachers about funding and attendance.
