Who was the ESPN PBP announcer for 2002 FF?

IIRC, Dave Ryan ( not the one from KDWB )

I mentioned him earlier as someone to consider for the Gopher job. I think he'd be fantastic.

Dark Star was extra feisty towards Sid Hartman the last few weeks on the Sunday Sports Show. Maybe he knew it was his last chance to get a few digs in.

I heard that interview and it was tough to listen to. I even headed out to the track tonight and PA struggled to begin with. Instead of starting off the first race with his usual "And they're rrrrrracing," he went with what I think was Dark's voicemail message of "If it's good new or money leave a message." It was strange, but that was PA's way of remembering him.

Wow, I just listened to the beginning of Common's 2 o'clock hour.

Tenna: "No answer on the Dark Man's phone"

Common: "This is not like him. I'm being serious, this is not like him."

T: "I hope he's OK."

C: "[Common makes a joke about maybe it's a daylight savings time confusion] But seriously, I don't even dare make jokes, because what if something bad did happen? This is his favorite hour of the week."

Sad stuff :ddown:

It will be interesting to hear what Dan B. has to say about Dark on Sunday Sermons this morning...and what Sid has to say on the Sports Huddle this morning.

And tonight on Sunday Sports Talk...if they simply leave an empty chair where Darlk Star normally sat.

Dark Star...RIP.

Anyone catch the Sports Show tonight? Obviously it was a tribute to Dark, but man, Sid
couldn't get one word out. Maxie had to finish not only his sentences, but his words. I am
sure it's hard when a colleague passes, but man, that is the worst I have ever seen/heard
Sid.

I've never been a fan of sid's. I wish no ill will on anyone, but I'm not sure it was because of sorrow, or maybe it's time for him to hang it up. That was brutal to watch him...

I'm guessing the other guys have been mentally preparing themselves for when Sid goes for a while now. Sid, on the other hand, probably expected to be the first one to go so he was probably hit the hardest.

I havent listened to Sid on CCO radio for a long time but heard him a couple of weekends ago and couldn't believe how badly he sounded on the radio. His voice was so soft and weak and Dave Lee was finishing all his sentences or repeating all of his questions until Sid understood them.

Through the 1990's and most of the 2000's I was a regular Sunday Sports Huddle listener...and it was usually entertaining...Sid arguing with the callers, especially the ones who weren't screened that well before getting through. And I do admire Sid's work ethic.

That being said...the Sports Huddle in the past 5 years (and CCO in general minus Erik Eskola and Dark Star among others) is almost un-listenable.

Sid's hearing is gone, so they don't take many caller questions...and basically fill the 2.5 hours with guests, and mundane questions. Additionally, Sid sounds like death warmed over...and not even Dave Mona constantly trying to bail him out and change the subject...works anymore.

That and the way CCO runs commercial spots every 5 minutes...it screws up the flow anytime you listen to them. The way KFAN runs a block of spots 3 times an hour (to break up an hour into 3 listener segments) is a far better format for the listener...you know when they're running their spots and can change channels in your car radio for 5 minutes, then switch back and listen to the next segment.

This is probably a Minnesota Nice issue since most professional people in this state don't have the balls to just be a straight shooter on things... but Sid is long overdue for somebody to just be honest with him that he is way past his due date for retirement.

That was half the fun of listening to Madden/Summerall. I grew up listening to them on Sundays. It was like having a traditional meatloaf/mashed potatoes/corn on the cob meal. It was like comfort food in audio form.

what's with the failure of radio people who try to transition to TV? The guy from Kfan who went to kstp radio and is now on tv, darren wolfson, I hardly know him by name but know his voice. He's definitely a sports wonk. I guess that translates to radio better than TV. TV is a medium that requires more than just being knowledgable and a fan, you have to be media ssavvy. Darren, bless his heart, is not TV presentable. I don't dislike him, it's not someone you fell strongly about, you just don't want to watch him.

You are right. Television is populated by people like Mark Rosen who don't know a thing about sports but are comfortable on camera and can readily gain access to athletes. Doogie knows his stuff (particularly baseball) but he's probably better built for radio.

He doesn't make me hate him, like the morning talk show guy on Kfan, always pimping his band rocket club. Ack. LIke a hairball in my throat. If he sold soap we'd all be hearing about it. the only redeeming value is he likes hockey. Chris hockey, or hockey puck. He sings all the songs they make up and his voice sucks. He loves to hear himself on the air and singing and talking, Ack. I like the rest of the show, he's like some third wheel.

The Power Trip is unlistenable. Can't stand Hawkey, Star thinks every player in the NFL is one of the best, and that other guy is a know it all.

As far as Doogie goes, I don't have a problem with him in small doses on the radio. Having Charch on with PA is the only way I can listen to the fan from 9-noon.

I don't mind the Powertrip. Not my favorite, but it's the best morning show on in the cities... Which is a pretty sad indictment on how bad drivetime shows are in Minnesota.

Also, to be fair, everyone on KFAN thinks they are the be-all and end-all of sports knowledge. Usually, they are on par with the guys on ESPN First Take.

It is a sad indictment...cco BRUTAL since EE left in the morning...KQ...they never should have revealed that Tom B. does the show from the basement of his homes in MN and FL...Mike and Mike..how much football and BB talk can you handle along with constant Subway references...so that leaves KFAN. The hour that includes Rosen by far the best hour..I happen to like Hawkey & Meatsauce...OK with Morris...LOATHE Sludge. And with that its still the best morning drive show in the cities.

Perk is a complete nutjob. I've heard that Shaver is an ass but he seems fine to me. I know people who have to deal with him regarding little league baseball & they can't stand him.

Perk is a boob; Shaver passable as a sports announcer* but reserve judgment until he gets some run time as anchor.

* Shaver's transparent airtime love fest for all that is BSM and its standing in HS Football (puny and insignificant except that is where his kid played football) rivaled Shelby's unabashed, weekly on-air gush of girls basketball (a sport, coincidentally, that his daughters played while Shelby was shuffling papers for 'CCO)

Perk makes what he thinks are clever and whitty comments which aren't either. He has a 2-3 minute spot on LaCrosse!!! And has no highlights of the golf tourney. And his hair is messy!

And in April when Perk talked about the Frozen Four he misidentified 2 of the 4 teams, showing how much he cares about college hockey.

You can win a division with the Twins position players. The pitching is the problem.

Glad to see it. I hope he is doing well and can find a radio home. Personally, I would like to see him replace Joe Anderson on the Judd & Phunn show on AM1500. Joe is a good guy but everything he says is just very forgettable.

Very interesting interview.

This is why I miss Jeff on the radio, brutal honesty. Takes a lot of balls to go on the air and talk about such an intensely personal thing. Sounds like he is back on the right path in life, hopefully he stays that way and gets back on the air.

I'm pretty sure several people on this board have met Dubay. Frankly, I found him to be a pompous ass, and never once attributed that behavior to his drug addiction. If his attitude about himself and others has changed, I applaud him. I remain a sceptic, however.

If he wouldn't have been a Gopher hockey fan, I doubt most here would give him a second look.

On edit: I'm listening to the interview. It's pretty decent. A couple of criticisms:

1) He said he didn't know what the cocaine was. Ummm. Yeah.
2) He said his divorce was particularly brutal. I'm pretty sure most divorces are particularly brutal. He's not unique.
3) He blamed a friend for not helping, and then called him a cruel person.
4) His reaction towards Hazeldon is disconcerting. It's funny that he said they tried to tell him he was selfish and egotistical and he disagrees. I found him to be both of those things.

There are lots of positive comments on the interview, but I picked those out frankly because I have a jaundiced view of him. I really did appreciate the interview.

IIRC, his wife cheated on him with his own brother. Which is why the divorce was sudden and particularly difficult.

I've never met the guy, so I don't know what he's like off the air, but I've always enjoyed his sports takes (not just because he was a Gopher hockey rube), because he understands MN sports from a true fan's perspective.

Well, hopefully he finally kicked the stuff for good. I always found him to be a nice guy, and was saddened to watch his downfall.

As for treatment, places like Hazelden don't work for every case, which isn't a knock on either Hazelden or Dubay. If "locking himself in his room" worked, then that's what's important.

I won't claim to be an expert on Dubay's situation. However, addicts are selfish by nature so I kind of disagree with him on that point of discussion. I am able to say this because I am very close to somebody who is in recovery (clean over 7 years) and I have met a number of other people in recovery because of this person. A very common theme among them is how self involved they could be. People who become addicts are constantly caught up in "taking the temperature" on how they feel emotionally and it takes a lot of energy to do that. All that energy goes into thinking about how they feel and it doesn't leave a lot of room for consideration about others. Maybe selfishness doesn't lead you to into using the first time but it is certainly what maintains the addiction... because most of what an addict is thinking about is how he/she can avoid feeling bad (physically and/or mentally).

Family and friends are adversely affected by the addict's behavior. That's why Al-Anon exists. To help people deal with the addict in their life, etc. They are hurt by the addict's selfishness, etc.

I give the guy credit for getting on the radio and telling his story. Like him or not, it isn't easy to speak out about some of your lowest moments in life. Especially in such a public forum like broadcast radio. I've sat in on a few AA meetings in support of somebody and I really respect the people who are willing to spill their guts in front of others and try to help other people with their recovery. Maybe Dubay helped somebody today by telling his story. Somebody trying to overcome their own addiction. You have to give him credit for that.

I thoroughly enjoyed Dubay when he was on with PA. It was nice having a full-time Minnesota Gopher hockey fan on the radio to talk Gopher pucks. He and PA played off each other very well IMO. Tiny Joe tries too hard (plus, his predictions are usually farther off than PA's are--which is a feat in and of itself). It came naturally for Dubay. His rube-ish nature was fun, but he was also generally pretty knowledgeable IIRC. I hope he makes a full recovery and stays clean. I don't know that he'll ever get back to a full-time radio gig, but I'd enjoy listening to him in regular segments on KFAN with PA etc during Gopher hockey season at least.

I like to think I know a thing or two about recovery. I'm not personally in recovery but I did my pre-doc training at Hazelden, worked there afterwards briefly, and still work with many addicts in my current practice. I would say many of the things you are describing are spot on Hammy. However, I think a distinction can be made that would help people integrate both your and Jeff's point of view. One of strategies of many recovery philosophies is to externalize the problem, or as they say in AA to "love the addict hate the addiction". It's one of the advantages of the disease model. But whether you see it as a disease or a compulsion; everyone agrees it is obsessive. When your obsessed with anything, by definition, you become narrowly focused on that issue (in this case getting high) at all costs; eschewing any of your other priorities/values (like people you care about). When your ignoring other people/things and only focusing on your want (getting and using drugs) that can be well described by saying one's is acting egotistical or selfish and you'd be right. Jeff acknowledged that he was enamored by the drug and his time and his life were taken over by it. He admits he was obsessed...and probably would admit that he made selfish, egotistical decisions...whatever you want to call it... primarily when he was using. That's a key caveat. What he does not want to agree to...is that this is the wholesale type of person he is....and he's right. The addict piece is one part of him, we all have parts that suck. He has other parts that do care about people, are considerate, caring, giving...and many of us agree strong and courageous given his story. But...he was turned off because this selfish part was described to him by said counselor (or he misinterpreted it given the mindsett he was in...admitting he fought the program) as not a part of him...but who he was in essence...in total. He knew that was wrong. Another way of understanding it is characterized by another AA saying where they talk about the distinction between guilt vs shame. Guilt is feeling really crappy about doing something that's bad. It's healthy, it's productive, and can spur you towards change. Shame is taking it a step further saying...because I did that...I'm a wholesale s**t person. That's not healthy. Jeff admits guilt...clearly...but he felt shamed in whatever program that was and doesn't want to say he's a bad person...because he's not. Probably why Buster was such a influence on him. Here was a guy who had more, and lost more, who the rube in Jeff knew was cool, admirable, talented, etc. If he could be got by the same thing Jeff was and still move on...it's reasonable Jeff could relate and say that maybe he could too. A good counselor/doctor will work their art by trying to get a patient to clearly understand this above difference; own your crime...figure out what caused it, how to fix it, and how to never do it again. Always acknowledge it, be aware, and never forget it...but don't let it define you as a whole, remember the other positive parts we can use to rebuild your life....otherwise...what's the point?

Hartman and Barriero with Common as the main side kick was very good radio (IMO).

It is good to see Jeff doing better. I am a big fan. Hopefully someone will give Jeff a chance on the radio. He was a driving force in elevating Gopher Hockey on the local airways.
