Although this would be more appropriate on Memorial Day, this still made me stop dead in my tracks when I saw it. Thanks to everyone who has fought for us to be able to drink beer, spend time with our family, and most importantly continue celebrating our independence

To make a long and confussing story short. Cause it's long, confussing and so many details to it. But, I have a friend who's boyfriend at the time was killed playing Russian Roulette. The real sad part of the incident was, right before they pulled the plug on him she whispered in his ear that she was pregant and he would be a dad.

Sad, yet...I cannot quite figure out what would drive someone to play RR. Boredom? Bravado? He must have been unhappy in his relationship with her, a f***ing idiot, or both. As hammered as I get sometimes, I would never consider ending my life with some stupid game of chance, so unless he was plowed, and again, showed a complete lack of judgment, I cannot comprehend what would drive him to play RR.

This pretty much sums it up for me as well. Giving money to charities and to the University doesn't make up for allowing these types of abuses to happen.

Because it would be cool to see something like that. I've seen the same fireworks for a number of years... I just want to see something different and explosively awesome like that.

Well it would be less boring that way ;)

I mean if I see fireworks fine...I dont go out of my way to though. Some people drive for miles to see them...

Now watching drunk idiots set them off is fun...though only in the "God I hope he blows his hands off or the firecracker hits him in the nuts" kind of way :D

Sounds like you should join one of the local fireworks clubs who still shoots some of the professional shows in the Twin Cities the old fashion way. It's rather fun to be reloading mortars with all the debris falling down on you and the concussion from the explosions overhead pulsing through your body.

My wife is an RN at one of the big metro hospitals and used to work in the plastic surgery area. Every 4th of July was good for at least 2 mangled hands/blown off fingers resulting from fireworks and 1 lost finger in a pontoon door.

I think for fireworks to be worth it, you have to be really close. I can't stand watching fireworks where you are over a mile away while the sound and light are not the same. If the grand finale isn't a senses overload with the brightness and sound, it's not worth it.

This year I found that I prefer being a little bit further away. If you're up too close, you have no sense of things setting off at different elevations, everything's just straight above you. Plus I think they look better framed against the horizon/skyline as opposed to just pitch black.

good points.... if I implied that I think donating money allows for beneficial treatment in a case like this, I should have been more clear with my point. I've read quite ab it about Jo Pa since this story broke. He's not a saint, but the decades of documented good will he has done (not financial contributions, but story after story of him assisting individuals and groups behind the scenes and away from the cameras) does earn him at least a right to reserve judgement on him until the whole story emerges IMO..... which it will.

I watched fireworks at Niagara Falls from the Canadian side once. It wasn't 4th of July, it was Memorial Wknd. Either way, with the falls all lit up...one of the coolest things ever.

We always go to the Aquatenial fireworks (presented by Target). They are launched from the 3rd Avenue bridge and the stone arch bridge seems to be the perfect distance from the launch for viewing. You can see them all, they are well framed against a part of the city skyline and yet you are close enough to feel the concussion. One year though the wind was blowing straight down the river and all the debris fell on us. Paper ash in hair and on clothes was a little yucky.

My wife teaches at Harding. She and several other teachers who had Clarisse in their class had nothing but positive things to say about her; noting she was a real sweetheart. Freakish and sad story. Her family is not very well off to say the least and the link above mentions a memorial at all Wells Fargo Banks if someone is so inclined.

Yeah what a terrible idea

Yeah, it’s such a terrible idea, but funny, somehow the Pioneer Press allows comments on the same news story. :confused2:

Victim in fatal Harding High crash was 'gasping for air'; driver charged with criminal vehicular homicide (w/ video)
http://www.twincities.com/localnews/ci_ ... cities.com

To say nothing of the fact that the Strib reviews all comments before choosing to post them or not.
So why the concern? Maybe trying to suppress the views they don't happen to support perhaps? :ddown:

Or perhaps maybe they are concerned someone might attempt to try and convict someone on a message board
regardless of evidence before the trial?
Hmmm?? :confused2:
Where was it that have I seen that done recently??

So you're mad that they didn't allow hate filled speech in the comment section? :good2:

I guess my point is, why do you care so much? The comment section on news sites like yahoo, MSN, CNN, w/e are for the most braindead of trolls who possess the critical thinking abilities of an amoeba. No offense to amoebas.

The fact that OT had to mention, "illegal alien" in his comment is the reason. The girl died and it was a tragedy, but it wasn't because the driver was illegal. Immigration is a very real and large problem that needs attention, but it is a completely different subject matter.

What should have OT said? If this clown wasn't here illegally that girl would still be alive. Throw in the parts about driving without a license, a past DWI, and carrying loads of false identification.... so yes, it's worth mentioning in the same as if he were drunk or high, or fleeing police, or driving a stolen car, or doing something else illegal while he killed her in. To me it's not just tragic accident anymore when any of the factors I noted are involved because a crime is being committed.....just like in this case.

Probably not, because the "yuppy 21-year-old white socialite" hadn't committed a multitude of previous crimes and been allowed to stay in the country when she wasn't supposed to be here.

Also, way to interject race into the discussion.

Someone doesn't need to be here illegally to be an idiot. The "throw in parts" you mention are relevant to the story not her immigration status. Fix illegal immigration? Yes. Blame it for this death? Missing the forest for the trees.

FYP.

The fact that this guy is here illegally is only one of many violations of the law for this guy. He also:
1) Was driving without a license.
2)Probably driving without insurance.
3)He was in illegal possession of someone else's Social Security number. Identity theft?
4)Driving recklessly, reportedly as fast as 50-60 mph in a school zone.
5)Responsible for the death of a young girl and for injuring a young boy.

Pointing out he is here illegally is fair game and should be pointed out. It must have been a real conflict for the RedStar to report that. What a conundrum for them when an apparently legal immigrant is killed by an illegal alien. It's a truly tragic event that this little girl died. It didn't have to happen, there were plenty of opportunities to send this guy back to wherever he came from. You may downplay the fact the guy is an illegal alien but that fact is central to his side of the story.

Do you suppose he'll get the same kind of media attention that Amy Senser has gotten?

The story also says Joe Senser was not in the courtroom. How is that possible? Your wife is about to find out how long she's spending in the Gray Bar Motel and you don't bother to show up? What a strange family.

It's been a horrible 2 days for U.S. troops. A nearby neighbor used to have a Bush Killed banner in his front yard where he would change the number when a military personnel was killed. It was removed when Obama took office. I guess it wasn't a protest about war (as I initially thought) as much as it was that he was a DUMBACRAT.

The death toll in the last 3 years has been catastrophic, yet our media all but looks blindly to the daily deaths.

I don't know if your neighbor is a DUMBACRAT, but he is an ass.

Sadly... I think the media is not reporting it so much is because the numbers of deaths compared to other major wars in the last 100 years is just so much smaller in comparison. Soldiers are just not getting killed at the rate that they were in the wars I list below. This is fantastic and shows how good our military is, but it's just not enough "death" for the media to latch their grubby little hands on to.

Military Deaths (deaths per day)
WW1: 116,516 (279)
WW2: 405,399 (416)
Korea: 36,516 (45)
Vietnam: 58,209 (26)
Iraq/Afganistan/War on Terror: 6,280 (1.72)

Don't forget that everyone's benchmark now is the remarkably low casualty Gulf War I. IIRC we lost 9 in 100 hours, which comes out to about 2/day, but it not so much the average per day as it is that we lost 9 in the entire conflict.

If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?

No doubt our military is top notch, but something that bothers me about that stat is how many days each conflict took.

WW1 417 days
WW2 974 days
Korea 811 days
Vietnam 2238
Iraq/Afghan/Terror 3651

At first glance, we are just fine with a long drawn out conflict with minimal daily casualties in exchange for never winning.

Depends what you mean by "we". It wasn't exactly popular when it started and it became even less popular as it went on.

I would speculate this is also a pretty big reason:

WW1... drafted 2.8 million
WW2... drafted 10 million
Korea... drafted 1.5 million
Vietnam... drafted 1.8 million
Iraq/Afghan/Terror... no draft

...because there's FOUR!

The reason it's not news is that there is such a small minority of citizens participating. To 99% of Americans the war hardly exists.

In a few ways yes, though how patient the American public is about war casualties is tied to how clear the progress is. Casualties are much easier to stomach if, for instance, our forces are getting closer to Berlin day-by-day. In Vietnam we tried to define progress by body count and that ended up backfiring spectacularly since it wasn't any noticeable measure of how much of the VC and NVA forces we were neutralizing opening the door to outcry in the wake of the Tet Offensive.

Iraq/Afghanistan/Terror doesn't have any kind of clear progress indicator either. The only clear targets were the likes of OBL and Saddam, but beyond that all we were there for was to rebuild after toppling regimes and fight forces resisting the establishment of non-radical governments, neither of which ever really made critics change their minds or kept supporters from changing theirs.

I guess the progress at this point, is that there's a contingency plan to get out of each country by a certain date (I think everyone is out of Iraq). That doesn't make the losses any easier to swallow though.
