I played the Pines, Preserve, Golden Eagle, and the Vintage in Staples last week but stayed at a friends' cabin. I'm looking for more of a stay and play package. Grandview is probably out of the price range of the group I'm going with.

We did the stay and play at Fortune Bay two weeks ago. The combo of Giants Ridge and Wilderness is hard to beat.

If you can get a good deal at Maddens you can't beat playing at The Classic. That is the best course in Brainerd by a good margin. As said before the Other Maddens courses are meh but if you can get two rounds and lodging at Maddens for a good price take it. After that it's a toss up between the two Legacy courses and staying at Craguns or Grand View and the trifecta of The Pines, The Preserve and Deacons Lodge. I'd probably lean Legacy but im sure others would go With the trifecta. Other than getting stuck playing at the non Classic Maddens courses you really can't go wrong.

I'm not a big fan of The Pines. The Preserve is all right. Haven't played the others up there, but have been dying to play Giant's Ridge and Deacon's Lodge.

That's whats cool about golf. I like the Pines more than the Preserve. I know many people don't because it's not bent grass (now nearing a 20 year phenomena). Ignoring that, the only real negative is the quality of their sand trap care.

The Preserve is really growing up. They have made subtle changes to the course that make it much more enjoyable. #4, for example, used to have that pond that nearly crossed the entire fairway on your first shot. They have shrunk it to a small edge. That made this very unfair hole play much more fair.

Golden Eagle is a treat except for the owner. He should try to at least fake a smile. His grumpiness has gotten worse each year over the last 10.

And again, just found it humorous coming from a guy that most golfers wouldn't give a 6 inch putt to.

A lot of ex-athletes have their skills diminish at some point in their career. Joe Morgan wasn't a great hitter in the end. Should he have never been critical of anybody's hitting then? All QBs have had bad games, etc... does this mean ex-QBs shouldn't criticize from the broadcast both when a current QB screws up? I guess I don't see why it matters whether Miller was a good putter or not. It's his job to analyze such things from the booth and he called it accurately on Woods.

1) I never said Johnny can't criticize him. I said I found it comical. Especially the comment about Tiger never being good at adjusting to changing green speeds. Which had nothing to do with last weekend.
2) Tiger's problems last weekend were way more about tee to green than they were about putting. Which again is why I found Johnny's comments odd.
3) This horse is dead and I'm moving on. :)

i play it alot, one of my favorites, all the par 3 play a club longer than what you think. #4 tough tee shot, need to play there a few times and you can score well, alot of holes you can cut strokes if you know where to play too.

Shot a 41 on the front, left a couple strokes a little short. :anger:
Back 9 was a little rough, although I can blame some of that on the beer  the greens were very hard, could barely get anything to land and sit. Definitely a fun course and will absolutely be making another trip up there. Really enjoyed the layout of the course.

Tiger wins at Congressional. His third win of the season. Tiger moves ahead of Jack with his 74th PGA tour victory.

Interesting, Tiger has won on three courses that he has won on before.

Yeah, but it's sort of getting hard for him to win on a course he hasn't won on before.

I told Hobes in a PM that was the worst golf shot I've seen all year. Followed closely by the 6 iron BVP hit from the middle of the fairway right before it...

That is the point I was trying to make .. i look at this year as a progression for Tiger (as i say that he is the only 3 time winner on tour). He still isn't there but getting closer.

Congratulations. :good2:

What course? What hole? How long was the hole? What club? Very important details to omit.

It actually wasn't bad! Of everyone in the bar, only me, my dad, and two of the three guys in the group ahead of me (that I hit into on my shot by accident ) bought on my dime. There were more people in the bar, too! Not sure what the story was with that, but I'm thankful. I think it was $33 total

You didn't offer to buy everybody in the bar a drink? $33.00 on a Sunday afternoon is getting off pretty easy.

No I did! I walked in and said that I made a hole in one so anybody who wanted a beer could get one. Only two other people took me up on it. And we did finish at like 8:30 in the evening... I assume it would've been much worse if we finished between 1 and 5 :)

I need a nice course to play in the Elk River/Monticello/Rogers/St. Cloud/alexandria/sauk center area, Basically anywhere off 94 between rogers and sauk. Any suggestions?

Monticello CC or Pebble Creek in Becker are decent options. Pebble won't blow you away by any means but the greens are almost always in perfect shape.

I played in a tourney at Pebble Creek last year and was really impressed with it. Good course and pretty good value too if I remember correctly. I will try to make it out there at least once this year because I liked the course that well (I live in SW MPLS so it's not like it's an easy trek to get out there - it's worth the drive).

Lynx National in Sauk Centre is a good fairly easy course. Wide open and big greens. Otherwise I second Monti CC and Pebble Creek although PC's bunkers have way too much sand in them. Every shot into a bunker turns into a fried egg lie.

Yeah I've played greystone... good golf course if you like fescue rough two yards off the fairway. I thought it was super frustrating - you lose a ball on basically every hole if you don't hit it straight. Nice layout / nice conditions IIRC, but I wouldn't play there again.

It used to be next to impossible to play. They made some major adjustments to the course filling in some water and cutting back the rough quite a bit. It's a very good challenging course but maybe not for everyone depending on their skill level. That's why I mentioned Lynx National in Sauk Centre. It's a good course and a lot more forgiving for the duffer.

Has anybody here ever chipped in two shots in one round before? Last week at Meadowbrook, I managed to chip in for eagle on a Par 5 from about 50 yards away and then sunk a chip from about 40 yards for birdie on the last hole of my round. Although I have to admit that I played mostly like dog crap most of that day so my score didn't reflect my good fortune.

Never chipped in twice in a round. That's pretty cool. My greatest golfing feat is flying a ball straight into the jar for eagle from 80 yards out. It was men's night so I won a skin for the eagle too!

I chipped in at Augusta...my sister's father-in-law's brother is a big shot attorney in Atlanta and was able to get us on..hole #17 par 4 around 420. I hit a driver around 250 then I hit a 5 wood that just kept rolling and rolling and rolling...
It was a cinderella story. The only thing I missed out on being more of a pro experience was some d-bag yelling "it's in the hole" or whatever they say.

We only played the back 9. His partner had some shady deal going on or something & we were able to get on in the evening. I shot like crap every other hole just because I was sort of in awe. For some reason I just crushed 2 shots in a row and it just happened to hit it in the right spot! This was back in 2007 I think they've done some major changes to the course since then.

I played there on Saturday morning. Greens are pretty hard. I couldn't get anything to stay on it seemed like. Pitching wedges rolled off, a 7-iron from 190 landed and made a legit ball mark and still rolled off. Love the course though, lots of fun.

I've always thought that if I ever get to play Augusta (or any of the other "major" courses) I'd play it from the same tees the professionals play - just to see what it's like.

How were the greens?

The greens were like felt but very pitchy (?)...maybe undulating (?). I think minimum I 3 or 4 putted each time. Difficult to read, my excuse was we had shadows to deal with. I wish I had Carl the groundskeeper's jungle hat & work boots on to make it perfect!

Phil Mickelson has put together his best 2 rounds of the year in his last 2 days at the Scottish Open. He started with a 1-over 73 on Thursday, but came back with a 64 and a 65 on Friday and Saturday. For a guy who normally struggles with links style golf and struggles in the wind because he relies so heavily on spinning his shots, this is a good sign for his British Open prospects. I don't think he'll have a chance to win at the Open, but maybe he can at least put up a couple decent rounds.

He was leading on the 10th tee in the final round at last year's Open and wound up tying for 2nd. Also finished one shot out of a playoff the year Todd Hamilton won. He can win this tournament. Though I agree that for the reasons you mentioned, he's never going to be a betting favorite there.

I was shocked to see that his 64 on Friday was the first time he had broken par since May.

That first playoff hole was embarrassing to watch.
His shot on the 2nd playoff hole from the fairway bunker was incredible. 10 inches away from the pin after he made a mess of that same hole 10 minutes earlier? That takes some stones.

I like Ian Poulter, Jason Dufner, Jim Furyk, Matt Kuchar, and Hunter Mahan all going off at 40:1.
Charl Schwartzel is going off at 50:1.
Justin Rose at 30:1 seems like a good bet. (IIRC, GOLF Magazine predicted him to win based on a bunch of random-ass facts that narrowed him down to being the only guy who could win it based on historical criteria)
Padraig Harrington is going off at 18:1, although I'm 90% sure that is because he won back-to-back Claret Jugs a couple years ago, not because he's actually a semi-favorite to win.

Even Mickelson and Fowler are at 33:1 and 35:1 respectively.

I love Phil, but not in this tournament. Seems too ripe for him to play stupidly and screw something up. They were saying the rough is set up to be like US Open thickness, but longer. The bunkers also look devastating, and Phil is usually not somebody to "take his medicine" on any specific hole, which could get him in big trouble if the rumors about this course are true.

Tiger (thru 9) and Adam Scott (thru 12) tied for lead at -4. Bubba is -3 thru 10.

Not the weather that was forecast. No wind at all for the morning groups, and probably as easy as the course will play all week. Adam Scott was 7 under on the 18th tee--a birdie would've given him the lowest round in major championship history. He pulled his iron into the fescue and wound up making a bogey for 6 under 64.

Not a sleeper or darkhorse pick but I'm going with McDowell.

Would it have been the first 62, but at -8 one stroke less than the record? I hope the wind picks up because it was relatively boring viewing this morning IMO. Tiger was really fortunate to come away with bogey on 15. After I saw where his second landed I thought he was staring down a huge number. I didn't think he had a chance to hit the green from there.

Correct, it would have been the lowest # of strokes (i.e. first 62). -9 is the lowest number under par, done six different times and most recently by Rory at St Andrews in 2010.

Agree on Tiger. He said after his round that the 3rd shot he hit into 15 was from a better lie than what his 2nd shot was.

Not even sure how that's possible at a course as heavily bunkered as this one is, to go 36 holes without making a single bogey. Ridiculously good golf. Though I have a feeling tomorrow things are going to be a lot different for Mr. Snedeker. Everyone said the same thing about Louis Oosthuizen when he won, too, so I guess we'll see.

Regardless of what the OWGR say or if he wins/doesn't win this tournament, Tiger is the best player in golf again. That should be a sobering reality to the rest of the field.

This Tues/Weds I went up to Brainerd to play Deacon's Lodge and The Classic. Both really great courses, Deacon's Lodge was HARD (thank god I hit 14/14 fairways that day), and the Classic was also very hard but more playable I thought. All in all, both tremendous golf courses and both much better than either of the other courses that I'd played up there before (The Pines and The Preserve).

I always find it interesting to see how a guy who has never won a major before reacts to a 36 hole lead. Fun to see if he can stay steady and keep it going, or if he wakes up Saturday morning and realizes, "I'm winning the :censored: ing Open!" Then goes out and shoots an 82. Snedeker looks pretty icy right now, but like you said, we will see.

Adam Scott takes a four shot lead over Graeme McDowell and Brandt Snedeker into tomorrow's final round. Scott -11, G Mac/Sneds - 7 and Tiger five back at -6.

No surprise. I'd like to ask the scribes just what exactly they think would happen in that scenario. Would they expect fisticuffs to ensue? Stevie to take a photographer's camera and hurl it at Tiger in his downswing? They wouldn't say a word to each other for 18 holes and then would shake hands after walking off the 18th green. Now there's a story!

They'd be hoping for Stevie to jingle the change in his pocket on Tiger's downswing which would cause Tiger to get a hernia trying to stop his downswing.

I agree with you if that dream group would have happened it would have been no big deal. Tiger ignores Scott and Stevie and Stevie and Scott ignore Tiger and his caddie then shake hands after the round. Compelling stuff.

I'm sticking with my original pick. McDowell for the win today. :dup:

Course appears to be playing a little tougher today. Scott (+2), GMac (+2), Tiger (+2) and Snedeker (+4) before even making the turn. Snedeker has back-to-back double bogeys. Tiger triple-bogeyed the 6th hole.

Graeme McDowell just hit one of the worst shots I've ever seen by a tour pro. Hybrid from the middle of the fairway dead left into the gorse. Lost ball and he is now donezo.

His boyhood hero was Greg Norman. That was as Normanesque as it gets. Though if Els hadn't birdied 18 I think Scott would've cruised in by two or three shots. That was such a huge putt by Ernie. Applied the pressure and from there Scott just melted down.

I was being serious at the time as Scott was up by 4 strokes with 4 holes to go. I had to take my client to the YMCA, and when I arrived, I watched Scott's final hole meltdown. Definitely turned into an entertaining finish, but the prior 2.5 hours were uneventful, as always, IMO.
