Climate change is as real now as it was 15,000 years ago when it began melting the gigantic sheet of ice that covered almost all of North America. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away before the 'evil' internal combustion engine was ever invented.

Douglas mentions a well coordinated effort to "spin the climate science," yet he omits referencing that almost all grant money is awarded to pro climate change scientists rather than the skeptical ones. Is he not aware of this? And if so, how is this possible given his background?

At least it's good to see TP finally taking a break from the Koch Brothers...

Almost all the money goes to "pro-climate change" scientists, because "almost all" of the relevant scientists (98%), not to mention all notable scientific bodies, acknowledge that GW is a very real phenomenon.

well DUH! Climate has been changing since the last ice age!

from what I've gathered, for the last 10000 years or so, have been very stable, which has allowed us to propagate beyond normality, "normal" climate is much more varied and unsettled.

True, the climate has changed in the past due to many things: solar cycles, changes in the earth's orbit, volcanoes, etc. But, the science shows that this most recent warming trend is consistent (in both timing and magnitude) with the warming we would expect to see due to a large increase in the amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere; this increase in greenhouse gases is unequivocally due to human activity.

We haven't seen a drop of rain since 5am this morning in Apple Valley/Eagan and my parents just got home from Bemidji and said they drove through "slight drizzle" in St. Cloud and nothing else.

Same thing here in downtown Minneapolis. Not surprising since downtown and Uptown border each other.

About half an hour after I posted that we got dumped on with rain.
Luckily I was able to put the new car in the garage before it hit. Hoping it stays clear the rest of the night cuz I won't be able to keep it in the garage the rest of the night :anger:

We had about 7 inches of snow in the yard today. I was out at 5 trying to save a bunch of trees that were pretty tired looking. Looks like there will be shoveling and chainsaw work to follow.

Man, we didn't get anything... We got some rain, but by the time I got off work, the streets were barely damp. I went to bed and there was a hint of a drizzle. I woke up, and there were a few flurries, but nothing on the ground...

It's clear skies here in the South metro but to the south of here are some thin wispy clouds that fade into a more solid yet non-threatening cloud cover. We have a light breeze out of the west/southwest at times gusting to 15 mph.
Temps are cool however pleasant if wearing a light jacket.
Just in case anyone is going to skip out and play golf in the south metro this afternoon.

Bingo.... Just shoveled another 4-5 inches today and it is still coming down. At least the grass should be really green in May...and the exercise is pretty good with this heavy stuff.

I use Weather Underground. Unfortunately, it doesn't have that info called out specifically. Their website, however, does have that information buried in the Wundermap or TDWR maps. Best website for weather bar none.

Dixie Alley

Not as many tornadoes as the traditional "Tornado Alley," but there are more deaths and destruction. I hadn't even heard of it until last season's Storm Chasers.

There is currently a mesocyclone entering the southwest metro (Lakeville down to Montgomery). Watch for the bow & hook echos as wind speeds in multiple directions and downdrafts on multiple levels are on the up-tic.

Holy f*king sh*t. That's a lot of rain... According to NEXRAD, total precip today topped 10.3 inches in some areas.

However, TDWR shows 5.1 inches. Either way, that's a s**t ton of rain.

At about 4:00, we had an inch in the rain gauge. 15 minutes later we had a little over 2 inches

Never seen it rain that hard in my life.

Some spectacular lightning strikes near my house. Lit up all the rooms in the house with that bright, almost purplish light.

Holy moly! All the power lines in Apple Valley on Pilot Knob Road between 42 and 46 were snapped like toothpicks and thrown across the road! Tons of trees shredded and snapped in half, stop signs were snapped off at the base, and one guy's garage door was sucked out and crumpled!

Lightning storms at night are annoying. I use a CPAP mask to sleep. It's probably irrational, but I find it spooky to sleep during a storm with a mask strapped to my face that is also plugged into the electrical panel.

That's just not the way I want to go down.

I see that you are in South Mpls as well. I was jolted out of bed by one lightning strike at about that time, which I was sure was going to be followed by the sound of fire truck sirens.

Wife freaked out in the middle of the night and frantically woke me up telling me to get the kids because the siren was going off. Begrudgingly I had to prove to her it was not a tornado and we should be fine staying away from windows, just like the warning on TV said. No way was I going to wake the kids up @ 3:30 unless absolutely necessary.

I live in Plymouth as well and normally I don't wake up, but at 3am the wind and rain had me out of bed. It was coming down in sheets and it looks like it was raining sideways. It was pretty impressive to watch for a few minutes before I went back to bed. Obviously we didn't get it nearly as bad as the south metro.

Here's the story to go along with previous story. Working for the city certainly sucked on a day like today.

Power restored to thousands of MN Energy Customers

The fences at Quarry Point baseball complex got blown over, and a 2000lb bleacher got picked up and thrown into the backstop on one of the fields, taking the entire backstop down and closing the fields probably the remainder of the summer. :chainsaw: :chainsaw: :chainsaw:

About 3-3:30 or so a crack of thunder made me wake up, think to myself, while in a complete daze: "huh. storm." and conk right back out. That whole sequence took about 2 seconds. I'm surprised I woke up at all, I usually sleep through anything.

Woke up about 4:30 to the sirens going off. I jumped out of bed and immediately heard the dreaded "freight train" noise that people often refer to, and then a loud "boom". Wife and I ran and scooped up the kids and hauled ass to the basement.

Turns out the "boom" I heard was our huge evergreen tree crashing through our 6-foot cedar fence. Our neighborhood got hit pretty bad with straight line winds. We lost 2 trees and were pretty fortunate compared to other houses in our neighborhood. The house a few doors down had 4 trees down in their back yard, and one of them damaged their house. Spent most of the day with the chain saw and the neighbors cleaning up. Power was out for 15 hours (just got restored at 7:45PM tonight). I've had better days, but at least everyone is safe.

Your experience was pretty much the same as mine (sans damage, thankfully).

Any chance of salvaging the trees? (We saved a 25' tree at my dad's house after it was uprooted in a storm a while back.)

The RUC model is putting the heaviest stuff around 2 am. But based on this:

Image

They shouldn't be that bad. Lots of rain, not a crap ton of oomph. BUt then again, these are forecasting exact conditions many hours in advance. Things change, even in near term forecasts.
