Good for Cammarata, but Roy should have won it.

I'm extremely happy we've got Cammarata for a recruit and he should be an excellent college player. But I feel the vote reflects the reality that league voters know Roy will be the MVP anyway and they are spreading the wealth on awards because of it.

50+ goals and 100+ points as a 1st year player is a pretty amazing year. First 100 point season in over a decade. When you think of all the great players that have been in the USHL since the last 100 point season, it is a feat worth bragging about.

69 points as a 16 year old, at 5'8"ish, 140-150 pounds, is also a pretty impressive feat. As long as he continues to develop and get better, he will be a fun one to watch in the "M".

Based on size of parents or siblings, is Camarratta likely to grow? Or has he plateaued? Not worried. Just curious.

Cammarata's Black Hawks lose in game 5 and he finishes the year with 35-50-85 in 75 games total. No one expects it but I say if he's gonna pick Canada he'd do it this summer. As far as I know, he wasn't drafted in the WHL but would HAVE to play in that league? Assuming he's back, hopefully he finds a nice line with Calnan and someone else and tears it up next year.

Side note: UMD incomer and Defenseman of the Year Welinski +5 in the 5-2 win...

Any word on when Kloos comes in (2012 or 2013)? Seems like they're letting him twist in the wind (why, I'm not sure). From what I've heard, he is fine with either Waterloo or the "U", but I'm sure both he and Waterloo would like to know as soon as possible. I think most would agree that when you are approaching HS graduation you'd like at least a little inkling as to what your immediate future might hold. IMHO

Despite the general public being in the dark, my guess is that Kloos knows exactly what his situation is (i.e. the parameters of the situation have been laid out, "if X or Y leave, you're in", "you can come if you want but the playing time might not be there", whatever).

If Bjugstad leaves (or if some other good forward unexpectedly leaves... which I highly doubt), Kloos will be coming in.

If Bjugstad stays, Kloos is going to Waterloo.

He understands that and he is fine with it. I think it is best for him to head to Waterloo for a year but I think he'd do OK if he has to come in next fall.

I'm sure he understands and accepts the situation - I think everybody paying attention has pretty much known what the deal was and how it all hinged on Bjugstad's ultimate decision for quite a few months now - but you can certainly understand how the continued uncertainty could be frustrating. You couldn't really blame a kid for wanting to know in late May where he's going to be in August.

Let's not act like he is waiting for a possible cancer diagnosis here... it's not exactly tragic circumstances to have to wait an extra month or two to see if you'll be playing college hockey for the Gophers next fall or the year after.

Yes, everybody's going to live and it's obviously not tragic; the point is simply that it's understandable how he'd want resolution one way or the other, and that you can see how the waiting could get tiresome. Even before he gets to next fall, where, when, and how he trains this summer likely depend on where he's going, and it would probably be really nice to know.

Maybe we should just kick Bjugstad off the team so that Kloos can get closure on this. It is unacceptable for Bjugstad to take time to properly evaluate his choices and make a decision. Rash decisions are best. ;)

If I were Kloos I would train as though Bjugstad were staying since that is all the info I would have to go on. In reality he should train for whichever is harder. Better to be overprepared than underprepared.

I think Kloos should try and have the NCAA let him break out of his LOI so he can enroll at Canisius this fall. Bet they'd find room for him.

He's never once complained so I'm not sure why there is any hand wringing over it by anybody else.

He's still going to have the training he's been doing (MAP/FHIT) and no doubt has input from the people at the U. Not that big of a deal.

Jeez, this is escalating fast - you'd think I was advocating John Hill's return. I was simply making what I thought was the uncontroversial point that, if writing on a blank slate, he and his family would probably find it desirable if he knew where he going and what he was doing (his training will undoubtedly be pretty much the same either way this summer but where he does it may be different). Nobody's doing anything wrong and nobody's really suffering, in case anybody thought I was implying otherwise.

I believe the expectation is that Kloos will play more of an offensive role than Horn, and if Bjugstad's still there they don't really have the same need for Kloos to come in and do that next year; it would be better for him and the team to spend a year in Waterloo to develop. Also, Horn's getting very little if any financial assistance, but presumably Kloos is getting quite a bit, and if Bjugstad's still around the scholarship money isn't there to spread around that far.

Except Kloos needs to be on a top 2 line to be as effective as the Gophers want him to be. He won't be a top 2 line forward if Bjugs comes back. Rau-Bjugs-Budish on line one, Condon-Haula-Boyd/Ambroz on 2nd line.
Why waste a year of his college availability with him chilling on the 3rd line getting reduced PT when he could be in the USHL getting 18-20 minutes/night on the top line?

Not so sure about that. Kloos is lightning fast AND he has an extra gear. That kind of speed could cause some real match up problems against other teams' third lines. He'll need a couple of physical line mates, but MN has some good balance of speed and strength. Either way, it works out for Minnesota.

You guys have to factor in not only team need but also scholarship. Horn costs them very little to bring in now and he fits in well with what the team needs with the current roster.

This must be the 3rd goalie next year?

Goaltender Matt LaPrade of the AAA Colorado Rampage has committed to the Gophers men's hockey team for 2012-13. During the 2010-11 season, LaPrade went 7-10-4 with three shutouts in the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League. LaPrade, from Chanhassen, played for Holy Family.

I would certainly hope so. Hopefully, he plays along side another HFC player in a couple more years. (We all know who on here.)

"Matt LaPrade Commits to Gophers as Walk-On"

From the Colorado Rampage site........

Goalie Matt LaPrade of AAA Colorado Rampage Commits to University of Minnesota

Colorado Rampage Alumni goaltender Matt LaPrade has committed to the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers for the 2012-2013 season. "This is a dream come true" said Matt LaPrade after his phone call from head coach Don Lucia. "Coach Sherman said to stay committed to the process and that everything will work out" LaPrade stated in his phone interview. Matt started this past season with the Bay State Breakers of the Eastern Junior Hockey League and was traded during the season to the Corpus Christi Icerays in the NAHL. During the 2010-2011 Rampage season LaPrade had 7 wins 10 Losses 4 ties with 3 shutouts and his GAA was 2.74 with a .904 save percentage in the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League. "We are thrilled for Matt and his family and this wonderful opportunity he has with University of Minnesota." said Director Andrew Sherman. Matt becomes the second Rampage Alunmi to put on the prestigious jersey in Minnesota joining Tom Serratore (2006-2007).

On the Goalcrease link, I'd like to point out that Sidney Crosby (Pen's pants and helmet in the middle, left-hand shot) is supposedly visible, along with what appears to be Erik Johnson, maybe Peter Mueller (Av's helmet-big right-hand shot) and an unknown player (Bruins?/Ducks? pants, right-hand shot) trying to score on LaPrade. I'm just a little curious as to why Crosby would be in Colorado training a goalie.

I'm also a little curious about the location--the FAQ lists their facilities as Edina and Blaine, but the map lists Edina and Stillwater. :confused2:

Good catch. I still want to know why their are three separate jersey's present aside from LaPrade's (who's wearing his HFC helmet and what looks like a Colorado Rampage sweater.) The Av is explained, but not Crosby and the apparent Duck.

Good catch. I still want to know why their are three separate jersey's present aside from LaPrade's (who's wearing his HFC helmet and what looks like a Colorado Rampage sweater.) The Av is explained, but not Crosby and the apparent Duck.

Is there a strick uniform standard for this event. Looks to me light and dark will work for drills.

:confused2:

I'm pretty sure he's a righty as I'm pretty sure he's the one holding the right-handed white Reebok? stick and Crosby in the middle holding the left-handed black Reebok stick. I'm also pretty sure given that Crosby is left-handed and only one of the three skater sticks in the picture appears to be left-handed. That said, when I first saw it I thought that the Av's player was the one holding the black stick going for the puck, but that is clearly being held by Crosby. (That and the proportions just don't add up for the sticks to be reversed.)

Edit: I just looked at the staff and found an Esposito working there. This wouldn't happen to be Tony's grandson, would it?

Pretty sure that is a left handed curve. Also, his right hand is on the butt of the stick meaning he is a lefty. That was my thinking

I am 100% convinced you are getting the sticks mixed-up. The middle player (in blue) clearly has his left hand on the middle of the black stick. Also, if the Av's player in white had his right hand on the top of the stick, the stick would be about 4' long. If the black stick belonged to Crosby it would less than that. If you follow the white stick up the page, you will see the left hand (stuck in Crosby's chest) of the Av's player align itself perfectly with it and has his right hand off the stick causing an optical illusion with the stick in-between Crosby's legs.

thedude wrote:It's Matt Duchene.

Both Crosby and Duchesne are listed at 5'-11" and the Av's player clearly is much larger than the Penguin. Also see above. Unless you have it from the source that's it's Duchesne, I'm not buying it.

You can see the tape job and the butt of the stick in his right hand, meaning he is a lefty. If he was right handed, there would be no way his right hand was on the butt of the stick, palm down. If you play hockey you would know what i mean

I just downloaded and enhanced it and came to the same conclusion. I saw a shadow on Crosby's jersey and thought it was black tape of the stick. I also got a better look at the curve of the stick and saw the butt-end in the Av's player's right hand. So you are right, after all.

If that is Duchesne, he looks huge compared to Crosby who is supposed to be the same size as both are listed at 5'-11", 200lbs..

You are right about the first part, but I did play hockey and would routinely switch hands on the stick to get around a player. I'm a lefty, but would routinely throw my stick into my left hand and hold it at the butt-end like you're suggesting to free it up while skating to the left around a defender and then switch back once I was around. I still do it every time I play street hockey.

(Of course, I had much better hands than feet while I played, but that's an entirely different story.)

Staying with incoming goalies, does Adam Wilcox have the same offensive talent and initiative as his older cousin? I don't remember a puck handling goalie at the U before.

If anyone is curious to get a look, Gabe Guertler is in the area this weekend for the Fargo Force Camp at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights. He is number "8" on the black team. Black plays at noon tomorrow (Saturday) and then again at 7:00 p.m. They also play at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. Don't go expecting to follow any other players as the Force, in a brilliant public relations move, have deemed only coaches and scouts worthy of receiving rosters of the teams.

also on Sunday..........

I guess that would explain it then since the last U goaltender that I remember is DeBus.

Agreed, just signed on hoping for something new as we don't have much to talk about given the stage of year. Thus the stick/player discussion so i get it i guess.

I'd be interested in an update on Connor Reilly's knee or whatever. Just curious how he was coming along after his "repair". Anyone heard anything lately on that aspect?

In that same article, at the bottom, it mentions a Kenton Helgeson. Could this 6'3" defenseman be related to Seth?

In that same article, at the bottom, it mentions a Kenton Helgeson. Could this 6'3" defenseman be related to Seth?

Doubtful.

the MSHSL site wrote:Junior catcher Jake Bischoff went 4-for-5 with four RBI including the go-ahead RBI single in a 3-run 5th inning as Grand Rapids defeated Totino-Grace 10-1 in the MSHSL Class AAA Quarterfinals.

Bischoff's RBI single in the 5th inning came with one out and broke a 1-1 tie. He would add RBI hits in each each of his next two at bats as well, driving in two more runs in a 5 run sixth inning to blow the game open. His seventh inning RBI single gave Grand Rapids the 10-1 final score.

Bischoff was the battery mate for senior right handed pitcher Grant Carlisle, who went the distance for his eighth win, improving to 8-1. Carlisle struck out seven in the 4-hit gem.

Five Grand Rapids players had multi-hit games as Carlisle also went 3-for-4 with a 2-run double; and Hunter Shepard went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs. Reid Holum added a 3-hit effort, going 3-for-5.

BOXSCORE

EDIT: Grand Rapids loses the semifinal game to Eastview 5-3 (LINK). Rapids will play Eden Prairie in the third place game tomorrow (Saturday) at 12:30 at Midway Stadium. Eastview will play Bemidji at 6:00 Monday evening at Target Field for the AAA championship.

Anybody else listen to LaPanta on PA yesterday? He constantly kept on calling him Brady Sky, it drove me nuts. Kind of reminded me of Gary Thorne's idiocy during our Frozen Four game against BC.

Some may think that's a minor thing, but that stuff annoys the hell out of me. If the guy is a professional, he should be keeping up with the team and its players...or at least ask somebody who knows for chrissake. As much as I like Thorne, he could acquit himself of the same task, although I suppose it's not exactly easy to bone up on names and numbers of kids you don't know squat about except for one night a year...calling them out in real time must be hard to do. Lapanta doesn't have that excuse here.

Away from sports, it's pretty easy to sniff out non-Minnesotans when they attempt to pronounce and ultimately butcher Indian names, such as "Owa - Tone - Ah."

While the Gophers have a much better shot in Skjei maintaining his commitment to the Gophers since he's a MN native, I hope the Rangers don't put any pressure on Skjei in going the major junior route like they did with JT Miller.

I'm not a Gopher fan but I'm definitely a proponent of college hockey.

If it was the Islanders I might be concerned, but what the heck does garth snow know about hockey. He is in charge of one of the worst franchises in the NHL. I guess he needs something or someone to lash out at. Eventually everyone will realize he is the problem with the organization.

Not at all concerned about Skjei. It's been his dream to play at the U (something nobody could say about JT Miller with UND) and he is already taking classes. He'll be suiting up for the Gophs this fall. No doubt in my mind.

I do what I can Slap Shot. Figured it's good to counter act the amount of UND fans that sign up here just to troll. :D

@dlw4gophers: I share the same sentiments about Snow. While there wasn't anything released or said publicly, I think he had a hand in making sure that Brock Nelson turned pro after 2 years. Prior to Nelson signing, most signs were him returning along with Kristo.

Regarding the draft though, I'm actually surprised Schmaltz was on the board before Skjei let alone drafted in the 1st round. He's got a lot of potential but has a lot of developing to do. Skjei is/was the safer pick. Schmaltz must've really impressed the Blues.

Probably good that Michaelson has something to prove next season after going undrafted.

Sorry for not being up to speed on this, but what is the word on him being left undrafted? Why? Not that I think it matters all that much at this point. Don should be able to develop him, and he'll be okay. Unless the Islanders draft him next time around........

The Nanne family must not have been able to get the adoption/name change forms through in time.

Crazy to think that none of the incoming forwards will have been drafted. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It's just a change from the norm.
