Well, it couldn't have been THAT tough to win. Every time I looked at ESPN's website over the past four days he was the only one playing.

He's known as a total asshole on the tour, is known to be one of the worst tippers of all time, can't manage his temper, melts down at the first sign of adversity, likes to blame the crowd for his mistakes, and cheated on his wife with more than a dozen women. wtf is there to like?
I cheered for him as recently as a few years ago. Now? If he never wins another major I won't lose any sleep over it.

Tiger has won twice (along with Mahan and Dufner) on tour this year in probably the two biggest non major events (Palmer and Nicklaus). Rory is slumping with 3 straight missed cuts. Phil just quit a tournament because he played a horrible back 9 and was mentally fatigued. Honestly what other stories are out there right now.. Donald regaining #1. Donald, Westwood and Fowler looking for their first major? Tiger looking to win his first major since Torrey Pines?

The media never needed Tiger to win for him to be the non stop story line.
How about we just let the tournament play itself out and talk about the guys who are leading/contending at the time they are leading/contending?

Which is fine but lets look at the reality that is Tiger Woods ... He has won 73 tournaments and 14 majors. Having said that, Tiger will be one of the featured groups on Th and Fr. He rarely misses a cut. Even with his sub par rounds, he usually has a story line to warrant some coverage (on the verge of making a run, lurking just off the leader board, trying to make the cut, looking to add to the title total or looking for the 15th major).
You must love watching tournaments without Tiger.
I still can't believe your silence on Phil WD'ing ..

Phil's WD was lame. He should have withdrawn prior to the tournament if he was really that fatigued so one of the alternates could have gotten in. It was poorly timed coming on the heels of his golf HOF enshrinement and was disrespectful to Nicklaus. Most of the scribes believe he did it to protest the Tour's cellphone policy. I don't care what his reason was.

I am a fan of golf and a fan of Tiger Woods. It is possible to be a fan of Tiger's and not be a complete ignoramus. I don't know what is more entertaining to me, watching Tiger win, watching Jack have to paste a grin on his face and act like he likes it, or listening to the whining and gnashing of teeth from the Tiger haters after he wins.

I just think it is funny that people get all riled up about the coverage Tiger gets like it is his fault. When you yourself acknowledge the reason for it is Tiger brings in a ton of casual golf fans and drives the ratings. The guy is probably the most well known athlete since Ali, I just don't see the point in getting irked that he receieves a ton of attention. I was listening to the radio on Saturday and the ESPN update said "from the Memorial, Tiger is four strokes back" and didn't say who was leading. I thought about you and started laughing.

I agree with you re: coverage. Obviously he doesn't control any of that--my beef on that front is entirely with the media. As an example, my brother and I sat in the Carlson Toyota lobby this afternoon for 45 minutes waiting for our respective oil changes. Saw his chip in on 16, no lie, 20 times while we were there. ESPN beats things to death to the point that my brother gets up, turns the channel and says "I'd rather watch a soap than this all day long." And he's got nothing against Tiger, there's only so much of the same highlight/story that one can take.
By the way, your anecdote was funny because the first two people I thought of when he chipped in on 16 was you and Hobes!

So you consider Hobes and I "Tiger rubes"?And I agree that the media over plays the Tiger angle at every opportunity. I just understand they are trying to make a buck and Tiger is money, and don't let it bother me. If you really want inside golf coverage about other golfers it really isn't that hard to find if you go beyond the usual suspects.

The FIGJAM stuff about Phil was a canard made up by some writer who wanted to create a name for himself.

Which fits right in to Feinstein's Eddie Haskell comparison.

IIRC you and I both predicted this after last year. I hope they don't get out of hand like they have done in the past, like Pinehurst. But I totally disagree with Chris and the U.S. Open is my favorite major. The players really need to be razor sharp for 4 days, and it is a mental grind. It makes accuracy so much more important than the run of the mill PGA events where everyone just goes bombs away. It is our National championship and it also doesn't have the over the top pomposity of the Masters or the British.
