Talk about College Hockey other than the Gophers...

You must not have checked very hard...being that it was mentioned at least 3 times on this page alone by Gopher fans. :)

Yeah, but it wasn't me. ;)

Seriously, when did this place turn into National Collegiate Hockey Conference Online? Talk about me trolling the site not being a fan of the gophers, yet there are over 600 replies to a conference that has nothing to do with the Gophers. Obsess much?

That car wreck is going to look real bad when the NCHC out draws the B1G at their conference tourney. What a pile the X will be when the gophers lose their 1st round game.

I don't think we should have to apologize for having a message board with a lot of users and a lot of opinions. It sure beats the alternative I see with some other team sites.

You don't have to apologize, just tell the folks who say "this is a gopher board, no one cares about your team" the same thing. This is my point. People get pissy when another fan calls your fans ducky and bunny, yet they obsess over our conference. Thing of beauty!

I find it funny a non gopher fan posting on the site is usually followed with "obsession." Gopher fans posting about a conference they have nothing to do with is "just fine and dandy." Dohkay.

I enjoy the site. Enough bandwagon folk to get riled up, but at the same time great hockey and non hockey talk.

Yup, Gopher fans are an odd bunch. They have a thread about a conference they don't belong to.
On the other hand, perfectly normal people go on other teams message boards to rile up the fans.

How can we rip him when he's right on this one? A thread almost a year old which covers a huge shakeup in college hockey where a lot of the discussion brings in the BTHC as well. Shame on us.

Does this mean DHG is obsessed with our obsession. The vicious cycle continues.

For comparison, the play by play thread is about 2 weeks old and has over 117 replies. Roughly 20% of the replies in 5% of the time of this thread.

The thread is "College Hockey". The NCHC is a newly formed college hockey conference. I assume most everyone that comes here is a college hockey fan? Even if the occasional comment is gratuitous I don't think overall it's that bizarre.

Oh sweet. Never even thought about that. Maybe they should keep the Gopher Rule for St. Cloud. Think they still need to call it the Gopher Rule too.

Interesting that it's not a rotation between the Target Center and the X. I wonder how much of that was an all-or-nothing demand by the TC, how much is from possible clauses to keep the X and JLA available to the BTHC in off years if one venue runs away with BTHC playoff attendance, and how much is plain logistics.

Re: new super conference (NCHC)

Because the B1G Hockey Tournament has only announced its format for the first for years, the X may have only been willing to offer the NCHC their tournament for the 2015 and 2017, not wanting to miss-out on the next deal for the B1G Hockey Tournament. I would guess that the NCHC tried to get an initial 4 year rotation between the TC and the X, and like 'thinkbui' said the TC probably wanted more of a commitment than that. It looks like the TC had the upper hand in the negotiations if they indeed get a 6 year deal with the NCHC. Obviously the TC knew that no one was really banging down the doors to host this thing, and decided if they were going to host they would do what they thought was in their best interest which is to have the event their every year, or not at all.

I still think the X asked for a guarantee in ticket sales and the NCHC couldnt risk it. The TC probably rolled out the red carpet begging for the NCHC to fill up empty days.

Yup, Gophers fans having a place to discuss the new conference in college hockey on the Gopher fan site is exactly the same as you going on another team's site. :confused2: Let me help you here, again, it would be the same if Gopher fans went on the NCHC site to try and stir things up. Do you see the difference? Didn't think you would. I know it's a slow time of year for college hockey fans, but usually your comments are semi-relevant. Apparently there's absolutely nothing interesting to discuss in the world of 'Dog hockey.

I didn't really expect the Big Ten to have a hockey site until the summer before it all starts anyway. The Big Ten already has a well known brand so it wasn't imperative for them to do that. It's a little different when you are basically starting from scratch with no brand recognition at all.

Whether you have a website or don't have a website at this point in the process is not the issue. Establishing brand recognition requires some organization and due-diligence and as has been pointed out more work is required for the NCHC compared to the Big Ten. It looks a little less than professional when a domain name and website are set up and then allowed to expire but then again it seems this is how the NACHO rolls.

To be fair, you may have ended up with Don Adam anyway had UND and Denver not split off from the WCHA. Maybe it wouldn't have been after this coming season, but Greg Shepherd was going to retire at some point and despite the reputation that Don Adam has with fans, he seems to be well respected among the WCHA coaches.

Schlossman is the same guy that tried to paint the Big Ten adn NCHC in a positive light last week because 1 team got added and 1 team got saved due to the conference re-alignment. Anything he writes will forever be tainted by his eagerness to wipe blame from UND for anything that happens (this was just the cherry on top, if you will).

Schlossman has zero credibility, everything he does is to promote the Whioux, not report on them. I love a homer as much as anyone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYMTMqei5AY) but at least admit to being one. I've interacted with the guy on Twitter a few times asking legitimate, polite questions and it is a joke, he is a fanboy who gets paid to have press credentials.

People are just figuring this out about the media in GF now? C'mon... crap has been going on up there for years and there are rarely any questions about institutional control, etc. by their media.

That paper has a business to think about (in an industry that has been struggling on the whole). If they start poking around and digging up the dirt on the only game in town, it's not going to help them sell papers. It is all about the $$$ and they aren't going to do anything other than cheer lead given that fact.

I have let this person continually post untrue things and throw me under the bus, but I feel like I should finally speak up.

First off, do you really think it's bad for business? You have to know that people read those stories, readers = papers sold and increased hits to the website. Why do you think that when this party story originally broke, we had it on the front page of the newspaper (not the sports section, 1A, with all the kids' pictures)? In fact, we had three or four stories on this incident on 1A, all above the fold, not to mention two others in the sports section. If we were trying to hide this or thought it was bad for business, why would we strip it across the top of 1A spread out over three or four separate days?

As for the follow up, we did keep checking back for charges, which is why we were the first to report when the minors were later handed out. After a month and a half, I assumed that was it, as it's rare for charges to be filed that far after an incident. I was wrong. When we did hear about it, it went in the paper the next day on the front of sports with all their pictures again.

As for the track record...

I'm guessing most people here have heard of Judy's Tavern and an incident there. How did you hear about that? Probably because it was not only reported in the Herald, there were 10 stories on it. Yes, 10 stories by the time it was done. Three were on 1A.

I'm guessing everyone has heard about the widely known "lawnmower" incident. How did you hear about that? Maybe because we "poked around and dug" that up and wrote about it (and not only wrote about it, dug up every single detail down to which dishes ended up in the street). Also 1A.

I'm guessing everyone has heard about Oshie's "elevator" incident. How did you hear about that? It's because not only did the Herald first report which charges were filed, we also dug up the details on the incident.

When the team party incident happened, we had quotes from the coach, the AD, the responding officer and from the RA who was on duty. The story was basically a play-by-play of what happened that night, all details dug up by the Herald.

Isn't it strange that everyone in college hockey knows these stories, yet fails to realize that the reason they know them is because they were all dug up and reported by the local media? You try to criticize the GF media any chance you get, but it's usually unfair. Compare how the Herald covers incidents to the rest of the college hockey media, including the media in your back yard. Similar incidents:

When Oshie had his "elevator" incident, we had four stories, two of them on 1A. We had comments from the coach, AD and the general manager of the St. Louis Blues. When Haula had his incident, which was similar, the "hard-hitting" Minneapolis media did not report on it until a small, community newspaper found it (if the Hillsboro Banner first reported charges against a UND player, you would be throwing me under the bus, yet there were no such criticisms of the MSP media). And even then, it was one brief with no quotes (none from the local NHL team that he's drafted by either).

When one UND player - Kristo - sustained a strange injury via frostbite, we scoured police logs, first-responder logs, wrote a total of six stories (three of them ended up 1A), had three separate interviews with the coach about it, comments from the AD, an interview with a guy who took him to the hospital and a 25-minute interview with the kid himself asking him to explain. When Connor Reilly sustained a strange, season-ending injury at a team party, Minnesota sent out a release that he injured himself "falling awkwardly over the weekend." That was the end of it. Never saw any quotes from the coach or from the player asking to explain, they just took what the SID fed them. That was it. (if the tables were flipped, I could only imagine what you'd be saying about my coverage of the incident, yet I don't recall any criticism of the MSP media). Why didn't they dig further? Bad business? Cheerleading?

Hear anything about Marshall getting in trouble this year? Doubtful. Never reported (if the tables were flipped, you would no doubt be calling me out for overlooking something, yet no such criticism of the MSP crew). While you're looking that up, check to see if J. Hansen ever got in trouble (again, I'd be getting called out for overlooking something). In fact, when is the last time the "hard hitting" MSP papers did look into something (don't see you calling them out for it)? I mean, if people are mentioning these two incidents in GF, someone there certainly has to know about it, right?

How about in Denver, where a kid (Jacobson) was suspended for most of the first half of the season. Apparently, nobody there decided to run his name through records, because they would have found out he's been arrested twice. Never reported by their local guys. I know Duluth's captain, Danberg, had a disorderly a couple years ago. Don't recall seeing anything on that. How about the Boston papers never looking into the incident with their Hobey finalist a two years ago?

I could go on and on, team by team. These types of incidents happen all over college hockey. Most of them are never reported because the reporters don't find out about them. If they do find out about them, they certainly aren't being placed on 1A of the newspaper as nearly every UND run-in is in the Herald and they certainly aren't as detailed as our stories have been. And if there is another college hockey paper that routinely digs up as much as we do, places stories as prominently as we do and has reports as detailed as ours, please say which paper.

As for The Mole - We did meet. I was covering an EGF hockey game and you were doing stats. We politely talked about EGF hockey and I double-checked my stats with you. Very interesting twist you have there on our conversation about EGF hockey.

BigSkyGoph - I frequently interact with fans from all teams on Twitter and enjoy it.

Fargo - Yes, I have actually been told that before.

Having written all that in a supposed defense of himself on another teams board? Interesting choice.

Pumping up all their reporting compared to allegations of other media outlets covering up supposed stories? Would have been better to take the Denny Green high road.

All thing considered, a post probably best to have just deleted.

Now THAT is a first post
<GophDogFan> yep, so sad... you have a new moment, when your uncle gets mad because you got the best of him. the last straw was when i told him that UND's hockey program is like crystal pepsi: Nobody every liked it.

That diatribe doesn't seem to take into account the difference of what constitutes "news" in Mpls./St. Paul vs. North Dakota.

Not sure what sparked Schlossman to join into the fray, other than listening to our tremendous GPL podcast and tiring of the shots across the bow over the years... but I'm glad to have the a professional recap of all the NoDak drama from the past couple years. I just wish there were direct links to all the stories--that would generate at least a few more hits for the GF Herald. I'm just glad that a paper has staff to cover college hockey, there aren't many people making their living covering college hockey. The bonus for the rest of us fans is they do actually cover all the shenanigans up there, as neither paper in the metro apparently has the budget/readership to assign a writer covering Gopher Hockey program as a full time beat. It seems to be a common theme around college hockey as more guys go to websites rather than papers with big distributions.

Looks like a lunker was landed. DrunkHockeyGuy should be jealous. Not gonna get into much of a flame fest over though. Sorry Jup. It's bad enough listening to him bellyache and whine over the rivalry stuff.

When you have multiple professional teams, multiple Universities (including one with major D1 sports beyond hockey), and a ton of HS sports in the local market, you're not going to get quite as much attention in the paper for a relatively minor off ice incident for the college team. Let's be honest... they have bigger fish to fry here. But when it is warranted (a la Gopher basketball), they don't sweep it away like nothing either. Not to mention, it is pretty much an annual ritual for Reusse to bash the local D1 hockey team at some point.

I never cared about much about lawnmowers or pissing in an elevator so bringing up those things is off target with me. They are college kids and I did stupid stuff when I was that age too (although it is a little different when you rep the University as a scholarship athlete). I was never aiming at that kind of stuff. My main issue is more what goes on behind the scenes with some questionable things at the school that I know are reality from talking to a few scouts/advisers that wonder how some of this stuff never comes to light up there. But I'll leave it at that. I can't entirely blame the media. It is a code of silence that wouldn't be easy to break.

I do think they go on easy up there when things aren't going so hot. That is an opinion. Like it or not.

Exactly. The Star Tribune has what 6 writers covering the Vikings in one form or another. Anything that happens with them will be dug up by one of those reporters, and people will care. Gopher Hockey? Both papers have virtually no one on a day to day basis covering the team, besides maybe Roman, and 95% of their readership doesn't care. Apples to Oranges.

It'd be interesting to see the web stats for the different teams. I'm sure Vikings lead the way, and I'd guess Twins are next. Then between Wild, Wolves, Gopher basketball, football, and hockey I'd be interested to see how they stack up. I'm sure it's easier for the Star Trib or PP to have their interns scan the police reports for Viking and Twin names, a bit tougher for them to recognize all the college names.

It doesn't really help when you change writers either. I understand why they would want to get what they could from Russo though.
