New Scoreboard & Sound System for Mariucci

A brand new scoreboard and sound system will be added to both Mariucci and Williams Arena's this summer. On Thursday (5/10), the UofM Board of Regents approved a $8 million dollar loan to pay for the improvements to both arena's.

Mariucci's new HD video screen will be roughly 11.6 feet tall and 14.9 feet wide. The old video board at Mariucci was 6 X 8 in size... In addition to the new scoreboards and sound, Mariucci and Williams will also get ribbon boards to go around the arena. For Mariucci the new ribbon board will be in front of the suites, club room and press box. It should be a spectacular addition... The last thing approved is production studio that will be built at TCF Bank Stadium to produce the video board content for Mariucci, Williams, and TCF Bank Stadium.

For the fans, I think the new sound system will be greatly appreciated. For years people have complained about how bad the sound has been at Mariucci. Hopefully now you'll be able to hear what rink announcer Jamie Verbrugge actually says in his little responses after announcing "1 minute remaining in the period".

Below is a concept of what the scoreboard at Mariucci will look like. Obviously this is not final, but it at least gives you a good idea of what it will look like.... Welcome to the 21st century Mariucci!!! Is it October yet?!?!

Hopefully the current video boards get reused somehow either elsewhere on campus or resold. They were a nice upgrade several years ago, even if they are now considered too small for an arena like Mariucci.

It's impressive how on campus video production for sports events has progressed over the last several years. Now the last 2 major venues will have video displays that will do them justice.

I hate it. Yes, we're winning 5-1, but only 10 SOG in the 3rd period? If it means we'll play like Wisconsin, I want nothing to do with it.

In all seriousness, it's a step in the right direction to keep Mariucci among the best college rinks, and since it is out in the open, season ticket holders will see the results of the re-seating process. If the loan is re-paid this year, here's hoping for a larger one next year to do more things behind the scenes-- new locker rooms, coaching rooms, etc.

Kind of a strange aspect ratio. Even more square than the old 4:3 TVs. To gauge the size, the X's screens are 16x10.

I calculated using the estimates in the post, which I figured would be a little more accurate than the rendering. It also looks 16x9 because part of the screen has the scoreboard on it at the moment.

Keep in mind part of those screens will likely include a score bar like the one shown in the rendering leaving the remaining portion in the appropriate aspect ratio for video.

Kind of interesting timing - you'd have thought that this might have been a good incentive for all those season ticket holders that may have been contemplating whether to renew with the new seating premiums.

Either way this does look like a great addition!

Will the ribbon scoreboard show live scores of other WCHA/BIG 10 games the entire game instead of just posting it between periods on the main scoreboard? A minor nuisance, but it would be nice to have live scores throughout the whole game.

No... This has been in the planning stages since February as far as I know. In fact I tweeted about it back on February 17th, but I didn't say more about it since I don't think it was supposed to be public knowledge yet at that time.

That new scoreboard concerns me that we only have 10 SOG in 2 1/2 periods.

It's refreshing, however, that we no only are killing the 5 minute major on Haula, but have managed to get Ohio State to commit 2 penalties during that time.

It's fitting that their backup goalie (#34) Brady Hjelle got one of the Ohio State penalties. He is from International Falls, and thereby probably upset the Gophers didn't try to recruit him. At least he gets some playing time after Cal Heeter let in 5 goals with 10 SOGs.

I disagree with your post^^

Yes, I would enjoy going to a Gopher Hockey game without a scoreboard or sound system. However, these are very necessary upgrades. With the old video screen it was pretty much impossible to see what happened on a replay from any part of the arena. If you were behind the netting like I usually was, it was worse yet. And the sound system is pretty bad. It was hard for me to hear things when it was just slightly loud in there.

Of course I would go whether or not they upgraded the scoreboard and the audio system. But we need to make sure Mariucci stays one of the premier venues in college hockey. And improving the scoreboard / audio, along with making upgrades to the locker rooms and training facilities is something that needs to be done. If I wanted to watch games in a dump and see the program become second rate I would become a St. Cloud or Mankato fan.

Anyone know what the work being done in Mariucci right now is for? I stopped by during a late lunch run this afternoon and saw crews setting something up. Unless the new jumbo is going to be 10 feet wider than the neutral zone, it looked more like work for an indoor stage. More than half the dasher glass was removed as well.

Probably freshman convocation.

I thought that's normally in the stadium. Mariucci a backup location?

I'm glad. It seems like all the other teams do that, I don't really mind being different in that regard. Part of this is because I always make fun of my brother (who goes to UW) when it gets dark and the popcorn box goes on the ice with his immobile head followed by all the players. It's just kinda contrived and unnecessary imo. We have our tradition, they have there's. Let's just leave it.

I saw photos of the William's arena scoreboard being installed and it appears to be assembled on site. They probably need to get a lot of equipment in there to set everything up. Could this be what you saw.

The William's scoreboard went up last week or the week before. The Mariucci board was to follow. Captains practices should be starting soon, so I have to imagine this work is the new scoreboard.

It is for the "Explore U" Fair, which is a part of Welcome Week, where the freshmen get to check out vendors, student groups, and get a bunch of free food and swag. It has been a fairly positive and successful part of Welcome Week for the incoming students. It is this Saturday afternoon, September 1st.

No, what UofMhedFan23 said makes more sense. The neutral zone was pretty vacant of any work and they were leaving the support structure for the jumbo up in the rafters alone. They were putting together what might be a video screen already being hoisted, but there was no jumbo framework anywhere to be seen and I can't imagine that they'd assemble the video boards before the framework, especially when whatever this is was being wired up to the rafters about 5 feet inside the offensive zone by section 24. There were also two large stacks of speakers getting ready to be hoisted, but both of them were being pointed towards center ice. So all of that made me believe that it's for something other than the Mariucci upgrades and likely temporary for something like "Explore U".

Convocation is at Mariucci. The big evening event where they do the big block M on the field is tonight at TCF Bank stadium.

As far as I know, it takes too long for the lights to come up to full brightness after being turned off -- something like five minutes -- making lights-off introductions impossible. Mariucci's lighting is nearly twenty years old, and is in greater need of upgrade than was the scoreboard. Just my $0.02 worth.

Since we don't exactly have a time crunch to turn on the lights for games, what makes the lighting more urgent? Is it deteriorating behind the scenes or expensively inefficient?

I think what he means, is:

If they turn the main lights off to do spotlight-style team intros, it will take the main lights another 5+ minutes to come back up to full brightness after being switched off for the intros. That is just how that style of lights works. That 5+ minutes would be right when the game is ready to start.

We have the same style of lights in our warehouse connected to our office, it is every bit of 5 minutes, easily.

The only game I can remember them dimming the lights for introductions was back in the mid-90's when CC came to town and the teams were both good and challenging for the WCHA that year. I believe that was the game where Mike Crowley scored his point-blank breakaway backhander in front of the net. :)

I understood that part of it. I was asking why he feels the lighting upgrades are more urgent than the scoreboard since the guys doing the recruiting have been saying that the old jumbo is detracting from our recruiting and feel a "lights out" introduction is something we can continue to do without.

Seriously? This has been said? Wow.

I understand the desire for a new jumbo to keep up with everyone else in the league and the country, but as a factor in recruiting? Really? I guess I shouldn't be shocked by anything anymore. :confused2:

I made my previous post as it did not seem like you thought there was any time crunch for turning the lights on. Sorry about that, I must have misunderstood. :)

Unless I'm mistaken (which I very well may be), Don Lucia was quoted in the Daily during last season as saying that the old jumbo was one of the things that made recruits feel our facilities were older than that of other schools trying to court them.

To be clear, don't mistake my skepticism about the need for lighting upgrades as being subzero on the "lights out" intro idea. Although I don't see room for that kind of intro right now, I don't dismiss the idea of having room for it in the not-too-distant future. I just think we need to have reasons beyond that it would be nice to have before we spend the money on it.
