I wonder what the top end of the pay scale is in your district...and you say it's lower cost of living? My wife has mentioned she'd like to live in a warmer climate....

The scale tops out at just under $95k per year.

The cost of living is quite low - cheap groceries, cheap gas and cheap housing. The grocery prices are driven by HEB, a local powerhouse headquartered in SA (I had major sticker shock the first time I went to a non-HEB in Dallas). Gas prices are driven by refiners being based in SA. Housing is cheaper due to it never rocketing off like it did in other parts of the country. You can still get a very nice house in SA in a very nice part of town for under $150k.

...and we have no state income tax...

That all sounds good. Except the part about living in Texas.

It's going for about $3.59 in DFW right now. I filled up in SA for $3.44 on Monday morning.

Grand Forks sucks. It always has the highest gas prices in the entire region. Fargo is ALWAYS around 25 cents cheaper. Grand Forks is at $3.75 right now...except for the Flying J travel plaza on the interstate which is at $3.55. But that's completely out of the way for 90% of Grand Forks residents

It blows me away to see the variation in pricing.

I drive the San Antonio - Dallas stretch of I-35 every single week. On the way home to SA last week, prices ranged from $3.89 on the high end to $3.41 on the low end. This was along a 275 mile stretch of freeway...all in the same state...AND just looking at Valero stations. Taxes didn't come into play here and neither did distribution (since it's all the same company - and stations located on a major freeway).

It's hard to understand.

that used to bug me too, but I have come to accept it ... I suppose there are people who want to use the phone away from the company they're with and it's the only good time to do it.....it is damn annoying though

The cheapest gas I ever see around here is at a station right across the highway from the Pine Bend refinery. I wonder what they are really selling. It would be like buying from the butcher shop down by the stables...

The Philadelphia airport is the most disgusting airport I have been to ever. I cannot believe they never paint or wash anything. If something is over 6 feet highly has a layer of dust an inch thick. The carpet looks
More like rubber than fabric and the bathrooms need to be condemned. They don't have electrical outlets but they do have a pay phone. I think they are trying to set people's expectations for what they will see in the city.

I was planning to leave a booger on the armrest of my seat to see if it is still here when I come back next trip. Then I figured there would be no way to know which booger was mine.

Pretty much matches up with my experiences at the Philthadelphia airport. It matches that whole B-E-A-Utiful stretch of I-95 between and including baltimore and philly. :puke:

Not the new terminal. The old terminal was like traveling to the third world, I always expected to see some family traveling with a cage of chickens among their luggage.

I feel like I'm flying into a third world country when flying into Detroit. That place is such a sh*thole it's ridiculous. The worst airport I've ever been to is Memphis. When I got off the plane and into the airport it was like I went through a time portal and into the 60's. To this day it's still one of the dirtiest and quite possibly the most technologically in-advanced place I've ever been. My friend just went through a few months ago and said that nothing had changed at all but said they had signs up about how they were going to upgrade it

The person on 35E South just south of the HWY 36 exit who slammed on their brakes to come to a complete stop in the left lane when an ambulance merged onto the freeway in the right lane ahead of them. I understand slowing down, but do not come to a complete stop on a freeway. I've been in an accident when someone stopped on the freeway. That is something I never want to experience again and it almost happened again today.

I pretty much agree with this. Philadelphia is probably the dumpiest airport I've ever been to. I remember Detroit's being pretty bad too, but I haven't been there in several years.

Every time I travel, it makes me appreciate coming home to MSP. We have one of the nicer ones in the country, IMO.

Never been to LaGuardia, huh?

I've flown to Philly and LaGuardia a massive number of times...and both are flat-out nasty. LaGuardia, though, takes the cake. Nasty neighborhood, nasty airport. Anything that makes Newark seem nice takes the "Nastiest Airport" award. For God's sake, you even fly over a flipping prison when you fly into LGA.

Better than the Dusseldorf airport. Place feels like a prison. White walls everywhere, with the occasional ad sign to break the never-ending whiteness.

I was there a few years ago. Nothing says "Enjoy your 3 hour layover after your 10 hour flight" like feeling like your sitting in an asylum

I have to agree with you on Facebook. The gap is narrowing for me on the positive to negative ratio. I really hate the live ticker. I don't need (or want) every one of my friends reading everything I comment on, like, etc in real time. I alter my privacy setting for a reason and yet it doesn't matter in some respect with this F'n ticker. I made a few comments on something that were read by some people that I am friends with but don't want to share everything with. When I realized one of them saw something, I got pissed. I am not at the level of bailing out on Facebook but its not far off. I'm starting to think I should make different profiles for different people I know.

I recently discovered that I can just block certain people's feeds completely and still be their friend. I have utilized this to it's full effect. Especially on those who invite you to their games every day or update every hour about how their 3rd month of being pregnant is going.

Definitely Voeckler. That guy was totally doping last year, no way he could have stayed with the big boys on EVERY SINGLE STAGE like he did otherwise.

Can people at least not drive the speed limit? You don't have to blow the speed limit away but at least meet it okay? :anger:

You need to get out more. Drivers suck everywhere, just for different reasons depending upon where you go. We're ignore the rules of common decency in the left lane, Sconnies are highly aggressive, try driving around Kansas City and see what happens if you don't drive at least 10 mph over the limit, every stoplight is an opportunity to drag race in the Middle East, move over or get sideswiped in Bangkok...

This.

In Denver (on the highways at least), I have yet to see more aggressive drivers. It's petal to the metal, cut off a car, then slam on the brakes because there's 20858302 cars ahead of the driver. Then it's switch lanes, petal to the metal for about 50 feet, then slam on the brakes again. It's crazy.

Drivers. Don't care what state.

Fri: saw a blonde woman try to back up from the right lane, when the light was green (yes, she stopped mid-road) to try and merge two lanes over for a left turn, despite there being 4-5 cars in that turn lane (she did this about two cars deep in the turn lane).

Sun: driving home from Bloomington, and 1 of every 5 cars were going within 10 miles of the speed limit (on the slow side) on 77.

I'll add that if you have MN plates, you probably will see WI drivers behave aggressively, because they're used to you guys clogging up the interstate by making poor lane choices (or they are from Sheboygan and probably drunk) Going west on 94 in Wisconsin on a Sunday afternoon is torture. There are 10-mile-long slugs of slow-moving traffic, with a couple of MN-plated cars invariably at the front of it without a care in the world.

IL drivers are A-hole speed demons, but generally competent.

IA drivers are unaware that they can signal their turns or lane changes.

I also have a very short commute to work (5-7 miles, depending on what building I am at that day), and it's during non-rush hour times (9am-ish or after 6pm). It's a Godsend.

More driving pet peeves: Driving home on 35W today, there was what looked to be a car fire (had been extinguished by the time we got there) completely blocking the right lane. There were messages displayed on the screens a couple miles before saying to merge left, and even a huge truck with the flashing " < < < " lights signaling that the right lane was blocked.

Of course half the people try to be cute and fly right up to where the road is literally blocked, where they can't go forward anymore, then sit with their blinker on waiting for somebody to let them in.... I have an idea, maybe if we all merged a little earlier, we wouldn't have to have a lane of traffic completely stopped waiting for the people who actually merged in time to let them in. Then they dart into tight gaps causing a sea of brake lights, and slow downs in the 2 left lanes.

CC to the people who do that: SCREW YOU!!!

I understand that the zipper works, but it still seems like it's just a convenient excuse for dbags who would do that just because they think they're too important to wait.

That's true. I would say I hate the people that cut up to the front equally as much as I hate the people who actually let them cut in. I would love nothing more than to see one of those jack wagons get stuck up front and have no one let them in.

As regards the "Zipper-Merge" are you folks referring to a situation where there's an accident or temporary incident? Or do you include ongoing/established construction scenarios as well?

Anywhere where there is lanes cut off (with signs or other means of knowing) and people drive to the end and force themselves in. For me that even includes the jerks who pull the same move on 394 where the carpool lane ends.

South on 61 to the Hastings bridge traffic narrows to one lane; the signs specifically say "Form Two Lanes During Backup" (or something to that effect) and "Take Turns at Merge".

I'm not making the "Zipper" argument here, in terms that it's the "Better" method, just that the signage directs motorists TO use both lanes and merge where it narrows done, in certain situations, such as in Hastings.

Since it is driving pet peeves day; on Noble Parkway way this morning a driver turns on to Noble from a side street forcing me to slow down, I was going 5 over the speed limit and had to slow down to 5 under the speed limit until the driver starting going 5 over. Then, we both took the inside left turn lane to turn onto 610 and for some unknown reason she decided to come to almost complete stop with a green light and let the metro transit bus go ahead of us on the on ramp. Stuck behind this idiot driver and the bus doing 45 mph on to a 65 mph freeway, I decide to go around both at the bottom of the ramp, as I pull on to 610 she cuts in front of me and I have to go the left lane to go around. I move back over to the exit lane for 252 and as I exit on to 252 the driver goes by me on 610 at about 75 mph. Why couldn't this idiot driver have the common sense not to pull out in front of me and just go behind me on Noble and none of this would have happened?

I used to hate people that said "get out of the left lane if you're going slower than the car behind you," because I felt entitled to the left lane if I was going the speed limit, but now I'm fully on board. I absolutely hate it when someone going slightly under the speed limit takes up the left lane, impeding ANY flow of traffic... ESPECIALLY just before rush hour.

This is why I loved driving through Boston--6:30 p.m. and everyone was driving 75 mph... Except the police officer, who was doing at least 80, hahaha...

Anywhere where there is lanes cut off (with signs or other means of knowing) and people drive to the end and force themselves in. For me that even includes the jerks who pull the same move on 394 where carpool lane ends.

Yeah I use this bridge frequently and indeed the sign says to form 2 lanes and merge ("zipper") into 1 lane over the bridge, I see no issue with doing this here.

since we're talking about drivers I hate people who drive minivans. I have reason to believe that once you get behind the wheel of a minivan you lose your ability to use your accelerator & blinkers as well as to simply pay attention to those around you!

How my mom has never been in a car accident, I can't tell you. Her driving is scary stuff. And yes, she drives a minivan.

The only thing worse than slow drivers in the left lane is if they are there because they are talking on the phone or texting. They go to the left lane so they don't have to deal with merging traffic.

So clearly you think you're more important than those that are properly and legally (not to mention by recommendation) staying in the other lane until they have to merge? ;) This is the way it is supposed to be done and I feel zero guilt. By trying to block my merge you're actually the ***** not me. :)

(btw as hard as you dinks try I still manage to get without a problem)

It's not that hard to merge into a lane when the traffic is free-flowing and you have 2-4 miles notice before it bottlenecks. That's the problem. I have no problem with it in traffic with people coming onto the highway from exits (like 494 during rush hour). I was driving to St. Cloud last weekend and traffic was backed up from Albertville to Rogers because they had road construction on 94. They had notices WELL before Rogers that there was road construction and to merge right. Did people do it? Nope. They waited to merge all the way to the shoulder--the whole road was blocked off for about a mile. I sat in traffic for 8-10 miles (for 30 minutes) for less than 1 mile of road construction because people wanted to fly all the way up to the scene of the construction then merge over. It isn't that difficult to get over early when you have warning that it's going to be slow.

How can a site like IMDB be so phenomenal and yet so lame about including photos for the cast of movies, t.v. programs etc? Seriously, finding an actor is a snap but at least half the time I have to go to Google Images to see a photo. :ddown:
