Season Ticket holder seat changes

Talk about the current Gopher Hockey team....

Re: Season Ticket holder seat changes

Picked my seats today. We were in row 16 of section 24 but those seats were taken. Opted to stay in the same section and moved down to row 4. It will be a different view of the game but we won't have the issue of looking through the netting.

Generally surprised at the number of seats available in the $0 sections. Picking this late I was fully prepared to move to a donation section thinking the $0 sections will fill up first.

Um, they weren't your seats anymore. If you are pissed at someone, I can get you Maturi's e-mail address. Or you could find his office and go visit him.

Yeah, I know. It's just sad that the seats I've had since I was 5 years old won't be the ones I'll be sitting in anymore.

I think this process would have gone INFINITELY smoother if the current seatholders had "right of first refusal" - if you want to keep the seats you have, you can but you need to pay the mandatory donation corresponding to wherever your seats are. If you want to pay that donation, you can keep your seats. If not, they go into the pot and you get to go into the reseating process. I know that would have satisfied me, anyways. I miss my seats already

I'm really surprised they didn't allow current season ticket holders to remain in their seats....

Surprises me too that people weren't allowed to stay as long as they paid the new donation price. I went through it for football, which made sense, as it was a completely different stadium, it was the only way to do it. It almost like they said, "well this is the way we did it for football, so we have to do it this way for hockey too...". When they really didn't.

To anyone considering sitting low behind the nets make sure you get low enough. I'd say row 6 or lower for views through the glass. For many years my group sat in Sec. 1 Rows 7 & 8, but the netting made the views of the far end impossible. No one could tell where the puck was at times which had never been an issue before the nets.

In the end we moved to S22 in the back row. Loved those seats - good view of the ice without having nets in the way, easy in and out (we were on the "half row" aisle). During the reseating we got sniped, so we moved over to the equivalent seats in Sec. 4. Hope the view there is just as good...

As I understand it, that's what they did :confused2: The most "loyal" fans had the most points and were allowed to pick first. I believe most of the loyalty total comes from longevity of seating. I may have gone down just this way.

I'll use myself as an example. I've had tickets since Mariucci opened, went to school at the U etc...long story short, my selection date was this past Tuesday. I moved from Sect. 24, seats I've had forever (also at one time had center ice seats but didn't think they were worth the gouging) to Sect. 15. I'm now sitting in the corner the Goph shoot twice. The point is that if the person who "owned" these seats last year had more points than me and wanted to keep these seats, I wouldn't be there right now. But, I am there now because based on points I am "more loyal" than other fans.

I actually thought all of the free sections would fill up first. I was dead wrong about that. I think people who got used to paying 500 bucks per seat in the center now think they're getting a deal at 300 and a lower ticket price.

After talking with them I chose to renew despite knowing I was rewarding their bad treatment of the fans. They mentioned that despite some of the M sections donating $500 per seat, they would make a lot more money now because there was too many fans grandfathered in that didn't pay any donation.

I chose some seats on the glass that they initially didn't want to sell due to selling the pair left a stranded single. When faced with losing the sale they chose to make it work. If this happens to any of you using the online tool call 624-8080, they will fix it quickly.

This was hanging out in the lobby all alone!

We were in the same situation, except we had tickets for 2 years in the old rink before going to the new one, we were in 23 and we moved to 15 also.

Yep. I took the bike right up in the elevator and made it wait in the concourse while I picked my seats. I was hoping to spin around the concourse a bit, but there were athletes working out and of course it turns out I was escorted by staff. :)

Soren, does the online tool not allow you to select 2 seats when there are 3 seats available consecutively? I'm eyeing some seats where there are 3 together and would be ticked if I went in to select and couldn't choose 2 of them, especially this late in the game.

It would not allow it when I tried to select last Wednesday. they syetem will not allow a single seat when there are others availble in a row. Even though my seats for the the last 15 years were available, I could not select them as it left a single seat on one side of me. I call the office and they said I would have to slide down one way or another, so I got one of my old seats and one next to it. They really were not very helpful as no one seemed to be able to answer my questions.

I wanted to select seats in section 18 last Wednesday am but there were three seats in the row and I only had 2. I finally gave up trying to get them and moved over to section 17. I get why they do that - for the last 20 years we've had a single seat next to us in 16 and it was kind of odd.

well i now see who is kicking me out of my section and seats. as i get to pick tomorrow morning with the $200 donation instead of a $100. i guess if you were in section 23 or 24 and moved to section 15 thanks you should have stayed in your old section. why would you want to start to donate now. as for what i get to pick well finding four seats together is going to be tough when you want to still sit where the gophers shoot twice but not have the band in your ears the whole night. i all i guess some people are getting worse seats and and some people are getting better seats.

I don't think I'd buy season tickets if you can't find four significantly better than you'd be able to pick up later. They are only going to have sold 7500 seats less however many don't renew this year. Getting on the phone right away when individual games go on sale may be the way to go. Skipping the scrimmages and the donation would more than make up for paying the premiums for UND/UMD/UW.

I considered this, and may consider it again next off-season, but I got on the season ticket wait list in 1994 when I was in 7th grade, and finally got a chance to buy season tickets three years ago. I just can't let them go quite yet. We'll see where we end up when we pick tomorrow afternoon, maybe we hate the new location and find we could just buy single game tickets for the games we most want to attend. The nice thing about having season tickets is, I'd never choose to buy single game tickets for an Anchorage, Mankato, Tech, etc. - but because they come in the season tickets, I have an excuse to go to those games too. More games attended = less LaPanta.

Wait, you're upset at those who didn't donate and now want to donate for not donating $200 instead of $100 so you can continue in your $100 seats?

I've been keeping a spreadsheet in Excel since last Thursday of seats available (not in every section but several that I'm interested in) and it's not hard to do because there aren't a ton of seats left, but one thing I've noticed is seats that were once red are becoming green. I've noticed this 2-3 times now, and when I called the ticket office, they first said they were shocked I noticed, and then explained that they held onto some of the seats and then release them after they determine they don't need them, or something along those lines. Some of the ones being released are in high-demand areas. I'd be kinda ticked if I'd settled for an area that was my 2nd or 3rd choice, and then these more desirable seats became available after I was already locked in.

Ummm, I would have had to donate $100 to stay in 23. Why not move to where the Gophers shoot twice for the same price? :confused2:

I'm still miffed from 20 years ago when we moved from the old rink where we sat where the Gophers shot twice to where the opponents shoot twice.

You might be able to, but you would have to go through the ticket office. I would call and ask to talk to one of the ticket managers, not the person that answers the phone.

Agreed. I'm sure they are told to say no, you are locked in, but I also know the managers have the ability to override things. Ask to talk to the manager and explain that you noticed seats become available after your selection time, that you would have chosen had they been available.

I picked yesterday afternoon. My wife and I ran over to Mariucci at lunch to check out some of our options. She really wanted the seats right next to the Gophers tunnel (I circled them in red below, though it's very faint). My worry is the sight lines will be terrible, as we are on the glass, right next to the tunnel (left side if facing the bench). The arena is set up for what looked like graduation, so the glass was down along the sides. I also worry that the coaches standing on the bench may obstruct our view. These seats have the potential to be awesome (hearing players/coaches/refs, feeling the vibe on the bench, my future kids being able to get high fives from the players, easy to sell extra games thanks to these selling points). They also have the potential to suck big time, if we can't see anything. But, if we hate them, I'm sure we'll be able to relocate after the season.

Yes, it is set up for graduation. I have to sit through my younger brother's graduation in two weeks. He's pissed that he doesn't get to walk at Northrop; I was pumped that he gets to walk at Mariucci!

I just picked. Our great seats on the aisle in section 2 were gone, but the 2 seats immediately next to them were available, so we took those. I was so tempted to select donation seats, but we've got so many trips (Amsterdam in June for one) and weddings going on this year, my wife would've killed me if she found out our Gopher tickets are suddenly $600 more expensive. Ultimately, we really liked where our seats have been. We don't enjoy the netting, but it really doesn't bother ol' eagle eyes here. I'd also rather be up high than down low. I figure sooner or later my priority will improve enough or my salary will improve enough or both (hahaha) that I can afford moving into the better sections. For now, $1500 for 2 tickets to every game for my favorite team is priced perfectly.

All in all, the selection process was very painless.

I picked seats 5 and 6 in row 4 - just in front of your old row. It has been a while since I've watched a game this close to the rink. Should be an interesting experience.

I'd bet those will be fine. But if they aren't you'll be able to move around the rink as usual.

There was a pair in section 7, row 3 (on the glass near center ice) available that appeared to have an awesome view from the seats, but they were right behind the camera well between the benches. Thankfully, a quick email to Craig and he informed me that he (and cphockeyman, etc.) DO obstruct the view of the people in those seats, so I didn't get stuck with them.

Those seats may also provide you with some interesting olfactory experiences too. :puke:

I was expecting to be asked for a credit card when I selected. Any idea when they hit us up for $? I must have missed that little nugget.

I got an invoice the next day. They want the $$ within 3 weeks of your selection date.

I went in to look and kudos to the U and the market research engine. They have clearly proved us wrong. As we near the end of seat selection, the only sections full are those between the faceoff circles or in sections with seats held (i.e. student sections). Otherwise, there are still seats available in the non-donation areas pretty much anywhere.

Now, maybe most of those blue to blue line seats were held by corpies or those already paying the $500+ annual donation who appreciated the price cut, but there certainly wasn't a mass exodus to the 24-2 seats as expected.

Will be interesting to see how basketball goes.

I never received an invoice in the mail, so I went on line about 4 or 5 days after picking our seats and selected "Renew Season Tickets" on "My Account" page. The new tickets and parking were there {they did have problems selecting parking during seat selection time so I had to call at that time}, and I proceeded to go through and pay by credit card just to make sure we didn't lose the tickets. I was pleasantly surprised when I got to the end, there was an option {to the left} to make 3 monthly installment payments. It kind of softens the blow if you can spread it out since many of us have real estate taxes due in May or are just finished paying their income taxes, etc. Just a heads up if it will help.

I dont think they were corpies, but they were probably people who got a discount under the new system and good for them. (no sarcasm at all)

The bigger problem is still that even 7 years ago this would not have been an issue as the stadium would be sold out. The fact that there will be open seats at all (with no waiting list) hopefully will wake the U up to how out of whack their pricing is overall.

That said, more tickets for people like me who decide on a game to game basis is never a bad thing ;)

I just counted. Looks like about 1269 seats left total. Over half of those are in section 2,3, and 4. Not sure how many days are left to select seats, but looks like it'll end up with under 1000 non season ticket seats.

I got my tickets today. Had to go with Section 10 as Section 11 was all full and the only thing Section 15 had available was right next to the band. As much as I love the band, I know the people who I share tickets with will not like it for a full season.

Wait, was the question not asking whether or not the student section was solid out...? Because the website said student ticket packages were sold out on the website about halfway through the year...

My thoughts were about the 1269 seats mentioned.....if students didn't buy out all three sections, then there are likely more than 1269 seats unsold.

The students only had 13 and 14 last year. This year they get 12 too. I am doubtful they will sell out, but I bet a fair number of them get sold. Rivalry games will be full, but I think for the others the students will fill around 3/4 of the section.

As of around 1PM on Thursday there are about 960 tickets left, not counting the student sections. Most of those are in sections 21-sec. 5. Sections 6-20 only have a combined 28 tickets left to sell.

So for all the huffing and puffing people are still buying their tickets...ah cliches :) ;)

Ya know for as dumb as the U is about a lot of things, they sure do know how to get money from the fans. Good for them...in this economic climate it is not easy to get people to shake their fist complaining with their left hand as they sign their check with the right one. Kudos...and a tip of the hat to them. :)

I dropped from four tickets to two and opted for one of the no gift sections. Had they not rebounded on the ice, I was out for sure. Even with a better product on the ice I was on the fence. Probably the biggest factor for me is that I am losing interest in going to the games and being subjected to three media time outs per period filled by marketing videos or gimicks. The flow of even the best games has been slowed to a snails pace. The marketing has taken priority over the band and the arena has lost any sort of college atmosphere. Ski U Mah.........

As I stated long ago, there have been a lot of fans already donating and the new dnation / pricing policy was actually a decrease for most. Many look at the donation as a worthy cause .. they are supporting something they love (the U of M) or a passion (Gopher Hockey). Lets not forget, for some the the donation is a tax right off.

It is the reality of college sports.

Not sure why the "U" is getting pats on the back for taking a sold out rink with a wait list of 1000+ to a rink with 8500+ tickets sold. I dropped a pair, but kept a pair. The biggest problem they had was that they had the vast majority of ticket holders that came from the old rink paying no donation, and sitting in choice seats. Now they have solved that problem, but have raised the barrier of entry to all new potential season ticket holders.

The team is going to have to go on an extended run of excellence to get anywhere near old tickets sold levels, even then I don't see it happening due to them no longer being the only game in town.

I'm somewhat confident we will never have 4 seats again. The atmosphere is not what it used to be, nor is it what it ever has been again. Fastly but surely, D1 hockey is becoming sterile.

To me the worst part of DI hockey is the early departures and the scramble to get a consistent line up with the reshuffle of new players. That's the new reality for the top programs, and it really does put a black eye on the sport.

When Minnesota puts a good product on the ice like they did last season, the games against the best teams really charge the building.

I think the wait list getting depleted had more to do with 4 terrible seasons in a row than the donation / reshuffle.

That and the bad Economy. Didn't the wait list get burned through a summer or two ago?

If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?

The barrier of entry has been too high for a while now I am not sure what your point is. The price of tickets hasnt skyrocketed the last few years, they have been in the same relative price range for a while. On top of that anyone on that waiting list who wanted tickets was going to have to pay (most likely) a higher donation than they do now if they wanted to get tickets before they were 90.

The U sold 9000 tickets, mostly in donations level areas and student sections, they made more money overall than they used to and have more single game tickets to sell for groupons and package deals. Also lets say someone wants to get season tickets after next year, they actually have a shot to do it instead of being turned off because of a ridiculously long waiting list.

Overall this has been a huge win for the U whether you like it or not.

Agree. And it is actually a win for the 'casual' fan too - someone who would like to go to a game or two but doesn't have the nut for a season's ticket and didn't want to whore outside with scalpers. We drive in about an hour and a half and to go there and scalp and not even know if we'll get a ticket was a bit much.

FD: we have two season tickets - okay seats - but have scalped a couple extra from time to time to go with friends and family. Been okay when going to a low interest game - has been stressful when trying to land high interest games.

Overall the 'auction' was a better experience than I expected or anticipated.

Yeah they really did do a good job with the re-shuffle. For me customer service was great and making the arena available to check out the seats was a great move. The website was well done, scheduling worked, seats for the most part sold.

I'm guessing they will figure out some creative bundles and sell most of the rest of the league games. Hopefully they get the student tickets sold and we could easily see pretty intimidating west end of the rink.
