This weekend is VEISHEA at Iowa State (think the U of M's spring jam, but 20 times bigger and better and at a place where fun is still allowed), and our neighbors are saving us all their beer cans and bottles. At 5 cents a pop, I'm going to make 30 bucks on Monday. Might teach them to play beerdarts too. It's gonna be fun.

When I moved here, I didn't know you needed to keep the barcode readable to get your money. So, naturally, I crushed the cans to save space and now have 10 bucks worth of them in my garage that the store won't take back.

I lived through the VEISHEA riots in '88 and '92. The '92 riots were pretty violent, a friend of mine got knocked the :censored: out when were trying to get out of the thick of the action. We were just walking fast down the sidewalk and when we came upon a small group of guys one of them just jacked my friend right in the face. Knocked him out with one punch, it was scary as hell. We didn't engage the group since they looked like the fighting type....and we weren't. My friend's one eye swelled shut and turned a million shades of blue and purple. We took him to the hospital the next day to have him checked out before we went home.

VEISHEA used to get a lot of bad press over the 3 riots that have happened but the University and the students have always worked hard to keep it going. It is a lot of fun...even though it's in Ames and even worse, it's at Iowa State. :ahhh:

Years ago I was a game at Mariucci and what I witnessed was pretty funny.

The Gophers went on the power play and the young kid in front of me; most likely around the age of 10 did the pentaly chant and yelled "you worthless piece of S>>>" at the end. He was quickly scolded by his mother. Gophers went on another power play later in the game. The same kid did the pentaly chant, but this time spelled out S>>>. Again, he was quickley scolded by his mother. When the Gophers went on another power play, the same kid this time did the chant, but sat down at the "wpos" part of it.

Celebrated my parents 50th anniversary today with the family at my brother's house. My sister-in-law did all the decorating and such, my sister arranged the week-long stay in Brainerd that we purchased as a present and my wife did all the cooking (fresh crab cakes, Hong Kong steak, lobster tail salad, Asian slaw..) and a new granddaughter made the day something to remember. I'm not very sentimental in general but this day was extremely joyous and we had a great time telling stories of days ago.

Driving through my neighborhood last week and finding these vintage Advent speakers sitting out on the curb. Walnut cabinets in very good condition and the speakers were in good working order. A most excellent find. :dup:

the $325....row 16 is already going for over $700. At least RUSH is keeping those first 15 rows out of scalper's hands! You can't transfer the ticket from the name on the purchase invoice.

It's a ton of money for a concert, but they are my favorite band and might be the last tour, and I've never sat that close.

Finishing the last group project I'll ever have to do in a situation where the bad members can't be fired. :good2:

Edit: Spoke too soon. Group member from hell #2 just sent in his section that should be ~15 pages long and done 4 days ago so other people could do their jobs. It's 2 pages, with 3 pictures and the text copy-pasted from various websites. He said he didn't have time to do it because of finals week (apparently nobody else has finals), and then he had some personal things (he went sight-seeing in Chicago with his friends before they go home to China instead of working).

I'll revise my simple pleasure to "Going Galt on a final project."

The COULD, but from my experience is that it really takes a lot (i've never had to fire anyone but I have supervised people who were underperforming). The process of firing an employee can be pretty painful for everyone involved.

Not to mention going through the process of hiring their replacement and getting a new employee spun up...

Unless you're in a super-high-pressure/risk environment, people (I think) are typically only fired for doing actual material harm, not just under-performing--the worst I've seen in my (2-year) career is a conveniently-timed layoff of a contract employee, precipitated by reduced staffing requirements, but I suspect other factors were at play.

Unfortunately, yes, there will always be such people (I was a more competent employee after 1 year in my entry-level position than a couple of my coworkers with 10 years in the company), but I find it's quite a bit easier to marginalize them than in school, and it's a lot harder for them to drop off the face of the Earth.

So it'd be fair to say the best defense against this crap is to be careful in the hiring process? Because if I'm the boss, there's no way I hire the two clowns in my group if I get to talk to each of them for an hour, get a writing sample, and make them come to a couple meetings on time.

Favorite part of that video was the dude sleeping in the back. I fully expected him to wake up at some point and participate, but clearly he got Armadillo's closed circuit message.

P.S. The dude in the middle looks like Mauer.

Well, it depends on what the blank is filled in with.

"Medicine" or "Law," then yes.

"Horse Feces Analysis," not so much.

My boss for the City of Apple Valley.
I went in to work hoping that I'd be able to leave early to go to Mankato to watch my brother pitch in what could possibly be his last collegiate start in the NSIC tournament, but not expecting to since it was very short notice and there are only 2 seasonals left and we're playing catch-up due to all the rain the last few days.
Not only did he say that I could leave early, but he changed my job assignment for the day to something I could finish early so I could leave earlier to guarantee that I'd get down there on time.

By the way, my brother was phenomenal--he threw a CG, 1 run (unearned), and knocked UMD out of the tournament. It gives Augie a chance to make the NCAA if they win tomorrow against Winona. Augie, Wayne State, and Winona all split their season series, and going into the weekend Winona and Wayne State were basically in a dead heat for the 5-6 spots in the regional rankings with Augie right behind them at 7 after they got swept by St. Cloud in a 4-game series to end the regular season (Augie dropped from 4 to 7 after that). If Augie eliminates Winona tomorrow, we figure they will have a good chance to move back into the top 6 in the region and make the NCAAs as long as no upsets occur in the RMAC tournament--Mesa State or New Mexico Highlands need to win their tournament, they are the only 2 RMAC teams in the top 8, they currently are ranked 3 and 4 in the region.

But if you bombed a chemistry class ten years ago, you can be sure that sumbitch doesn't expire. Also, please cough up $250 (or whatever it costs now) and reassume the position.

Doesn't the Peter Principle apply to people promoted until they are no longer competent? What you are describing may be more of the "Dilbert Principle" effect, where morons are systematically moved to the place where they can do the least damage, or management.

Technically speaking, you are right. For the purposes of this thread and my dry/bad sense of humor, I felt Peter was fitting  .
