I think we should all wait to hear what Dungy thinks about this before we form any opinions.

Did we get Laurent Robinson yet? He's going to be the "big" WR free-agent the Vikings get.

Can't say I like the idea of bringing in a TE. Especially one that has dealt with concussion stuff.

It will be interesting to see how the Vikes fill in the roster with the 2nd and 3rd tier free agents. One of PA's (Scheffert) regular football guests thinks teams actually do better waiting in FA and not blowing tons of money on the top guys. Better value and contracts.

Saw this on the internet...

"It's a shocking contract for a player who missed all of 2011 with a shoulder injury, especially since the Vikings had seemed to discover a full-time player in Kyle Rudolph. Minnesota was likely forced to overpay for a player it wanted after Carlson reportedly received interest from "at least" eight teams."

The Viking are really just one big cluster fudge. And in the bigger picture part of the general funk that is Minnesota pro sports.

Almost half of the contract is guaranteed money. $11/25. Seems like a stretch to me but if he stays healthy for 5 years I guess they'll get value. I'd have preferred they kept the powder handy to go get at least one starting caliber DB if not two. Maybe they believe they can adequately address those needs yet.

It's typical Vikings. Ooh, like at what New England did with two tight ends. Let's do that too.

Just so I get this straight:
2011 offseason: 2 seasons removed from the NFC title game with a lot of the same pieces in place, the Vikings and their front office are :censored: ing morons because they tried to make a move for a QB to give our team a chance to compete in a division that, at the time, didn't seem to be loaded.
2012 offseason: After a 3-13 season, in a division that could very well end up with 3 playoff teams next year (and could have last year before Forte and Cutler got hurt), we're :censored: ing stupid for not spending a ton of money on free agents (over-paying in a lot of cases) to try to compete rather than build through the draft for the next 2-3 years around our rookie QB that we should have started with last year without a training camp or offseason.

Is that accurate?

The 2011 "move" was Donovan McNabb who was a questionable pickup because of what he had shown in Washington. Could it have worked out? Maybe, but the results were pretty predictable.

If the 2012 point your making is that they shouldn't be spending (overpaying) for free agents and rebuilding for the next couple of years, I can buy that but then why spend 25 million (11 million guaranteed) on a tight end with injury questions?

Exactly. This team has a ton of holes and they can't all be filled through the draft. Of course that needs to be the primary source of players, but not the only one. I get that the Vikes are rebuilding but unless this is a 10 year plan to get better you need to start getting some better players in here now. Of course you don't want to sign 35 year old players but there are some guys out there who are young and would still be in their prime in a couple of years. And if the plan is to develop a young QB it doesn't hurt to start putting some pieces in place around him now. We'll see what Spielman has up his sleeve I guess.

Since we have more than one or two holes to fill I suggest one more hole at CB shouldn't make any difference and we should encourage Cook to take his act elsewhere. Maybe the Bears need a woman beater on defense to go with the one they signed on offense.

The Vikings are trying to put a system in place that uses two TW's a lot. We needed a TE. Who did we have behind Rudolph?

I just looked it up because I couldn't tell you: Daniel Hardy, Alan Reisner, and Mickey Shuler.

I don't understand why some people are so up in arms about it. You really want to trot one of those 3 out there as your second TE???

Yeah, the Vikings are copying the rest of the league. Two TE's is someone else's offense and now they want to copy it even though they don't have the personnel.

Just like when Chili came in and he wanted to run West Coast with the wrong QB and the wrong offensive line. Your offense/defense should be geared around your players not your whims.

What kind of offense fits our personnel, then?

I would say a two TE is the ideal system for us. Young QB, best RB in the game, O-Line that is not great at pass blocking, and now two very solid TE's.

Nobody is up in arms about it. If you can't understand why some might prefer other holes were addressed first I don't know what to tell you. The secondary is the worst I have ever seen in watching 30+ years of pro football. It couldn't be any worse if they brought Joey Browner and Willie Teal out of retirement and started them. And that's only a slight exaggeration.

There are some comments earlier in the thread that gave me some feeling that people are not happy with the move. "Up in arms" might be too 'strong' of a phrase, but you get what I am saying.

I think we can safely assume that the Vikings weren't sitting there at 3 PM yesterday, right when free agency opened up, going "Let's go get a TE! Number 1 priority!". Other people they were targeting might just not have been in the cards.

We weren't "copying the rest of the league." The last 3-4 years we've run 2-TE sets somewhere between 50% and 60% of our plays. Kleinsasser-Shiancoe, Shiancoe-Rudolph, Rudolph-Kleinsasser.
Last year alone, Vikings tight ends were on the field for 1684 snaps. Meaning 1.62 tight ends/snap. Rolling with Rudolph (unproven, though promising) and the :censored: sandwich we had behind him makes sense to you for a team that averages 1.62 tight ends/snap?

Have you even been watching the Vikings the last 5 years? Even Childress ran 2 TEs a ton.

Carlson's first two years in the league he averaged 55 catches and 600 yards and 6 touchdowns. Tight ends are often the "safety valve" for quarterbacks when they are under pressure. The Vikings have a young QB and a terrible offensive line. You don't think having a couple quality tight ends is important for our young QB that we want to build the franchise around?

As far as the DBs: It's pretty evident the team was intent on waiting on the Cook decision before making any moves. He's a 2nd round pick (our first pick of that draft), so we apparently think highly of him even though I personally think he sucks, he has 0 career interceptions, and gets burned far more often than makes a good play. I don't like the decision to not sign a CB yet, but there are still a couple quality CBs available. William Gay, Tracy Porter, and Marcus Trufant are all still available and have been solid CBs. The draft also has a few very talented CBs. LaRon Landry is still available as a safety.

I still want to see this team sign Levi Brown.

Not to insult Scooby, but he is not the most observant about stuff like that. If it isnt brought up by the guys on TV it can be difficult to notice stuff like that if you dont know what you are looking for.

This move is sort of like when the Twins signed Nishi last year...if it is the first of 4-5 other moves that fill other needs then it doesnt matter (the contract numbers dont matter minus guaranteed and $11 million is nothing) and the move is fine. If this is their big signing before the draft and then we roll with what we got than they might as well forfeit the season because they will be lucky to win 2 games even if they draft perfect.

Now, I trust Zygi and Co. infinitely more than I trust the Pohlads so I doubt this is the only move so I can be patient. I dont need them to sign big names, just experienced players that arent on their last legs.
If you disagree with me, that is aok by me :) :dup:

Good points made on the two tight end set. I stand corrected.

It's still one of the easiest positions for them to fill and the need positions go untouched.

That was my point. On the list of things this team needs I would put a second tight end a ways down behind D-back, linebacker, etc. I don't care if they run 2 tight end sets 110% of the time. The last time I checked you have a minimum of 4 defensive backs on the field for every play. We'll see what else Spielman has in store but making your only splash in free agency be a 2nd tight end with injury issues is a curious move IMO.

I think the problem is Spielman doesn't want to make a "splash move" in free agency because the team isn't close to competing and when you're not close to competing and want to make a "splash move", you're going to end up paying Mario Williams 100 million dollars and 50 million guaranteed (Buffalo), Albert Haynesworth 100 million for 45 guaranteed (Redskins), etc. Those kind of contracts kill teams for their future.

I would love to see a big name guy come here, but not if it means signing a guy to a contract like that. Manningham is still available (unfortunately, Laurent Robinson is not), so is Tracy Porter. Levi Brown re-signed with Arizona after re-working his deal to save some money. :anger:

The longer we wait, the bigger the discount will probably be on these players because the market value for them isn't as high.

I'm not saying they should have went out and spent $100 million on a WR or corner. I get that most of the roster rebuilding will come through the draft. If the team is as far away as Spielman says it is I just don't understand the logic of allocating that much money to a 2nd tight end with a history of injuries. Maybe after I see what else he does it will make sense. Right now I'm still scratching my head a little.

I agree. I guess our disagreement stems from the fact that I don't think 5 million a year for a TE (2.2 million guaranteed/year) is a lot of money for a guy who may end up playing as much as 85% of the snaps (if Rudolph gets hurt or whatever). I see this move as a pretty low risk, fairly high reward move.

More from Al Gore's invention...

"The Minnesota Vikings are apparently going to any lengths to overhaul an aging roster that finished tied for the worst record in franchise history in 2011.

Minnesota signed Nick Taylor, a former point guard on the Florida International basketball team, to a three-year contract on Friday. Taylor was listed as 5-foot-10, 165 pounds in his final season in 2009."

You can't make this stuff up.

Morris Claiborne scored a 4 out of 50 on his Wonderlic test.
It is the lowest reported score since 2000 when an Iowa State RB scored a 4 too.

To think I thought they were talking about Luck when they said, "An athlete like this only comes around every 10-15 years."

I wonder if his response was, "Woo Hoo! I got some right! My only regret is not matching my all time high of 8%."

Why are people so fascinated with this guy? The last time he won a Super Bowl I was young. That is a long time ago. So Zygi and family are huge Giants fans and that makes them think this is 1986? I suppose these are the same people who wouldn't let Chili escape, gave us the triangle of authority, and when that failed hired the dullest point of the triangle. So this would make perfect sense for them.

I don't get it either.
To me it sounds like the Wilf family is trying to stick it to the Saints. By "floating an offer" to Parcells for whatever he wants, if the Saints really want him as their coach they are going to have to up their offer to 6-9 million instead of the 5-6 they wanted to sign him at.

FYP and probably not. He's been hurt the last few years and it all depends on if he can stay healthy. He's not a good, not great, option when healthy. I suppose the trend now with the Vikings is to only look at players who have been hurt the previous year and hope they can get healthy. That has to be their way of finding value.

I'm all for trading down if we get a good deal.
Not too long ago there was supposedly no difference between Kalil, Reiff, and Martin. A month after everybody was done playing and nobody had done any workouts Kalil was the clear cut best LT? I don't get why. If we move down to 8 there's a chance we'd still get Kalil (the top 3 would be QBs, Cleveland has Joe Thomas, Tampa Bay needs a CB or a RB, St. Louis needs a WR or a CB).
We could move down and get Reiff or Kalil at #8 depending on how the draft shakes out, and pick up another high pick. Tannehill having that good of a workout gave the Vikings 3rd pick a huge boost in value. If somebody blows us away with an offer it would be stupid not to think about it with how many holes we have.

In theory I would agree with you. The problem is I don't want him having to decipher between which is the right guy at #8 vs taking the clear cut guy at #3 even if that means we get an extra pick in the process somewhere, which would most likely be in the 2nd round. I don't trust Spielman on gray zone issues with personnel/draft choices.

Has there ever been a state, that has had so much trouble getting a stadium bill passed for a football team.

Love em or hate em, year in and year out, there always in the top 5 of football franchises when it comes to local ratings and viewership, per capita. That must mean there somewhat liked in this state. Must not be in Minneapolis though :ddown:

This state just cant get out of their own way...

It is going to be funny though when the fans ignore all of this and blame the Wilfs if the team leaves...

I would like to thank the City of Minneapolis, Gov. Mark Dayton, Mayor R.T. Rybak and of course the Star Tribune for the current predicament. They just couldn't stand the idea of the Vikes not being in Minneapolis so they backdoored the Arden Hills deal and basically screwed everyone. Who knows if the Arden Hills deal passes but Minneapolis had at best a 10% shot because they never had the votes for the money or to override the referendum.

But hey at least we gave the Pohlad's their stadium...they sure earned it and damned if they havent used the extra revenue to improve the team

Oh and my Sundays will be free since the only team I watch is the Queens. :)

Yeah, your Gopher tickets will now be almost as hot a commodity as a Swarm ticket. I'm to the point where I hope the Vikings leave. Just so I can see the comedy of watching everyone who was against the stadium turn around and start looking for someone other than themselves to blame.

Oh you won't become an immediate Packers fan? That's what all my Cheesehead biz associates assume - they all tell me the day the Vikes leave is the day the Twin Cities becomes Green Bay West.

Would it be heresy if I were to saw this doesn't sound all that bad...?

I would ralph if the queens leave and everyone jumps ship to become GB fans. You know it will happen too. Obviously not everyone but I know a ton of people that will suddenly become GB fans.

I have to agree with Handy though. There will be some good ice fishing Sundays that I will have free if the queens leave.
