What do you mean by this? Like offering you different appetizers? Or asking if you want to add anything or if everything that comes on a certain item is ok with them?

As someone who works in a restaurant, it is astounding on how many people do not read the menu thoroughly. One example is that horseradish comes on the french dip we offer. 95% of people miss that and many don't want it so I always ask if it's ok with them.

I mean when the first thing out of their mouth is, "Would you like to try some pizza shooters, shrimp poppers, or extreme fajitas?"

That's what's known as suggestive selling. It works. I'm getting hungry already...gotta go.

Yeah they tell us to do that, but I never do. Unless they're plowed by the time they start ordering food

Can I get a beer with that? I know where you are coming from, but I usually try to sympathize as I assume they are told to ask me.

I have always thought it was strange how many restaurants in Minnesota offer a French Dip on the menu but no horseradish sauce, not even on the side. Who the hell eats a French Dip with no horseradish? :confused2:

Video games? Am I forgetting something?

As far as the gal on the fishing trip goes, well, I could see it if...she didn't portray any of the traits it sounds like the gal this thread has turned against portrayed during said trip. If she was fun, fished, got along with everyone else, and didn't pull a guy away from the fire, I could see it being o/k. Ughh - please don't think any less of me. :)

I hear he has an N64 and plays Wayne Gretzky's 3D hockey. It's what you do when it's too dark to wade safely and you are done with the fire. What do you recommend, fishing trip purist?

I was behind a guy at Subway once, and even though there was a line four deep, the idiot obviously hadn't taken the smallest of glances at the menu.

"Welcome to Subway. What can I make fresh for you? (Ugh, by the way.)
"What kind of sandwiches do you have?"
"Well, the menu is right up there, sir. Those are our $5 subs, and over here are the..."
"I'll have turkey."
"Sure thing. What type of bread?"
"What do you have?"
"We have Italian, wheat, honey oat..."
"White."
"How long?"
"What are the choices?"

(The sandwich artist is visibly annoyed at this point)

"Six or twelve inches, sir."
"Twelve."
"Would you like cheese on that?"
"What kind do you have?"
"American, cheddar..."
"American."
"What veggies would you like?"
"What kind do you have?"

Oh man, if I'd had a shovel on me...

Having to think how to approach my wife to tell her we aren't going to Iowa next Thursday after work because....I'M NOT MISSING THE GAME!!!! It's not going to be a pleasant conversation since her parents will be back from Colorado for the weekend.

The more likely event will be that I will leave for Iowa realllllly early so I can go find a bar to sit in by myself and watch the game....but I am not missing the game.

Okay you need to start getting the plan in action 1) starting Wed morning before you leave for work, start mildly complaining about not feeling well. Don't overdo it, you are laying the groundwork. 2) Wed night start upping the sad puppy dog look and add in a few more symptoms. 3) Be a brave man and go to work but move slowly and act really sick. 4) Leave work in the afternoon. NOW is the time to strike with the no Iowa statement. 5) Say, "but you should go honey, your parents just got home." Say "I'll be alright" 6) Ask her to make a run to the drugstore for tissues and cold medicine 7) KEEP A STRAIGHT FACE AT ALL TIMES Follow the plan! There that should do it. Now you have the house to yourself and can watch BOTH games. Final advise: don't get sloppy and leave the beer bottles in the recycling bin and fill the waste basket with fake out tissues!

No but scraping the old stain off the rough surface is a ton of work. I tried power washing which helped a little, but mot enough. And the boards I have replaced cost $35 each.

Do you have an insect or two??

No but scraping the old stain off the rough surface is a ton of work. I tried power washing which helped a little, but mot enough. And the boards I have replaced cost $35 each.

I have not found insects, but that doesn't keep the woodpeckers from prospecting.

I was thinking of box elder bugs. They seem to be attracted to houses with rough surfaces like cedar and stucco.

I am watching a pileated woodpecker wreak havoc on several of the trees in our backyard. His life expectancy is becoming shorter with each peck. :chainsaw:

If she was truly understanding, she wouldn't have made plans in that port-a-john of a state on the day that your favorite squad is playing their first Frozen Four game in seven years. In fact, she would have brought your plane ticket.

I feel your pain, brother. My wife is also from Iowa. I took a calculated risk and made a pre-emptive offer to go visit the in-laws the weekend of the Final Five. We hadn't been there since Christmas, and I knew that I wasn't going to get away with not going down for a visit sometime between the second week of March and Easter. She works this weekend, so that left the weekends of the first round of the WCHA playoffs, the Final Five, the NCAA regionals, and the Frozen Four. I'll be damned if I was going to miss the NCAA regional and possibly the Frozen Four, so that left the other two. I figured I'd get to watch at least 2 games guaranteed against Anchorage, so I decided to sacrifice the Final Five. I only had to miss the game where the Gophs pissed down their legs against ND, so my gamble paid off.

Terrible umpires.
I was down in Winona yesterday to watch Augie play Winona State (the NCAA D2 national runners-up last year). The umpiring was so unbelievably poor on both sides of the coin that it was infuriating. Game 1 of the double header yesterday was greatly influenced by the umpire blatantly missing a foul ball and instead calling it a HBP and awarding the guy first base. This scored the tying run when it should have made the count go to 0-2 with 1 out and the bases loaded. The next guy popped up to shallow center (which "would have" ended the ball game assuming the batter gets out and the rest of the game stays the same--which it probably wouldn't have). Instead, they had a tie game with 1 out. A pop up to shallow center makes 2 outs, and then a line drive to left ended the game, giving Winona the win. My biggest complaint about it: The guy wouldn't even ask the other umpire for help. The pitcher for Augie throws in the mid-80s (a submarine-style delivery). The umpire said it hit the kid in the hand. The kid didn't even flinch when it "hit" him, and the ball rolled back towards the mound probably 45 feet. I've NEVER seen a ball roll that far after hitting somebody in the hand (or anywhere else, really), let alone seen a kid get drilled in the hand and not even look at it. It was unbelievably poor, and the umpire's ego wouldn't allow him to ask the base umpire for help. Winona also ran an appeal for leaving early on a sac fly the wrong way and the umpires called the runner out anyways. The runner left early, don't get me wrong. But they didn't do the appeal the proper way. :chainsaw:

The second game, in the 10th inning, Augustana came from down 2-0 after 7 to force the game into extra innings. The game-winning double from Augustana went down the right field line and was awfully controversial. I didn't see it land, but the entire WSU contingent was :censored: ing like Whioux fans about Gophers diving that it was a foul ball and that it was foul by 2-3 feet. (Of course, all the Augie players say it was fair by the same margin  )
Either way, it was 2 great collegiate baseball games that were completely marred by terrible umpiring. The strike zone of the umpire in the second game was so inconsistent it was laughable. In fact, both starting pitchers were literally laughing on the mound about what constituted balls and strikes for him.

How hard is it for the NCAA to find quality umpires to do their games? I've seen better umpires in little league!

TV news reporting results from various contest shows as if it's news.

This. It seems like it started with Survivor and has now spread to all kinds of crap: DWTS, American Idol. Ugh!

So contests that people watch for entertainment doesn't qualify as news? I get your point but when I really think about it as long as people are interested in it then it qualifies. The same "it isn't news, it is a contest" argument could easily be made against sports. Just ask the people who don't like sports if they are over-covered in news broadcasts.

The new e-mail retention policy at work. It was designed by someone without a shred of foresight or one iota of understanding how a business works at the grunt level. It really, really grinds my gears. I don't think I've gotten that angry in years. It reeks of someone seeing the cost of a lawyer sorting through e-mails, pounding the desk, and saying, "THIS IS TOO EXPENSIVE!" without considering how much it is going to cost the company in everyday costs for all employees to categorize every e-mail, apply a retention profile to it, and calling IT when the system deletes the e-mail. It assumes that 90% of the e-mail I receive isn't relevant for my job when in reality, 90% of the e-mail I receive will now need to be classified twice and need to be accessed from the slow servers uptown rather than my local archive.

The design is worse than Adobe 6.0. Yes, I said it.

psych: haha, damnit dx, your phone is drunk again
dxmnkd316: f*** you, I can't stop any time I want
dxmnkd316: err wait

I don't think I'm always right. I just find it hard to operate on the opposite assumption.

You make a good point but the difference is that the tv news tend to only do stories on contest shows that air on their own network. IMO its just self promotion.

100% true on the self-promotion (cross-promotion). It is hard to give them (the networks) too much grief though. I would do the same in their situation.
