Weird. That blows... Do they have a program guide that shows the game on the FSN+ channel?

Yes they do. The problem that happens is that they don't update that until mid week. I DVR all games, so I have to wait until they update the time, otherwise it will record until 2am ( the alloted time slot.) Not a big deal if it's a road game since I'm home. I go to all home games, so I need to remember to set it before we leave to the Cities.

People who talk about what other people wear at awards shows. I can't imagine a bigger waste of my time than caring about what clothes other people are wearIng. I don't dress like a slob, but beyond that, "fashion" is lost on me.

I used to think Angelina was hot when she had a little more meat on her bones back in the day. Now she looks too skeletal.

I actually don't mind Billy Crystal.

They need to alter the voting system for that event though. Like a lot of things in this world, it could use more diversity among the voting group. 94 percent Caucasian, 77 percent male and just 14 percent of the voters are under 50. Pathetic.

I'm just tired of the Oscars and Hollywood in general (I watched back to back re-run episodes of Holmes Inspection and checked awards via Twitter). They take themselves SO seriously during the Oscars yet will now return to giving us unnecessary sequels and remakes.

I'm not a movie snob by any means but I have gotten bored with unncessary sequels and remakes simply because Hollywood has become more interested in the bottom line than originality

Billy Crystal annoys me because he is just so predictable. The Academy loves him because he is relatively harmless but I am bored with his schtick.

Working mainly off-site, and getting invited to a meeting on site that's an hour later...no warning at all. Would've been nice to know last week that there's at least a possibility.

I'm with you... Our supervisor/lead physician isn't really organized at all, and on January 30th decided that he wanted to have a mandatory education session for all employees on February 1st... At 7:00am. Seriously?!? It's as if he thinks we have the same schedule as him... That kind of stuff just drives me mad.

Graduate schools who treat you like you are ten years old.

A serious question on a slide for a class:

"There are five red apples and ten green apples. What proportion of all apples are red?"

The flu...started with the g_man on Sunday, got the daughter Monday night, me yesterday morning and then the wife last night. Flu shots are just a shot in the dark, 50/50 chance it works and 100% failure rate in my household. My wife really didn't need it to go along with her other illness she is still getting over.

My guess is your illnesses aren't influenza, which is what the "flu shot" is protecting against. However, it still sucks and is not fun at all... get better soon!

When people call and leave a message like, "Hi, it's me. Just give me a call." Since cell phones have caller ID, why make someone go through the gymnastics of retrieving an email that essentially says nothing more than "missed call"?

You likely contracted a norovirus, also known as "stomach flu," which as others have pointed out, isn't the same as influenza.

Calling norovirus "stomach flu" is a pet peeve of mine, actually. IT'S NOT FLU!!!

I remember the two times I've ever had "real" influenza. When it's at its peak, I wouldn't wish that on even the worst of my enemies.

Okay, I am not a medical genius and I know you shouldn't believe anything you read on the internet about medical things. I couldn't help myself in this case though, so if I read it right this "stomach flu" or norovirus that you think my family might have had is caused by some contaminated food or water. It is kind of hard to latch on to that theory because we all never ate the same thing at all from last Thursday to Sunday when my son first started shooting out of both directions. We had a schedule that had us going in many different directions. Also, half of my son's class at school has missed days with "flu-like" symptons in the last 5 school days.
I guess my biggest thing about this "flu" I had was that I felt like a someone hit me with a F'n brick house a million damn times. My body hurt EVERYWHERE!! All of us were severely fatigued, our bodies hurt like a f***er, had fevers, had chills, we puked, and we had diarrhea. In the old days it was called the flu, so I guess that's why I called it the flu.

*Sorry about the rant here...just a little touchy about the medical field telling me about what something is and isn't after a doctor told my wife to go home and suck it up and then two weeks later she was in the hospital with pericarditis and she is still having one hell of a time recovering from that. Nothing personal towards ya Row!

I agree with everyone else in that this sounds like norovirus. And although you can contract it from food or water, it is much more likely that is was spread from person to person from the sounds of it. Coming in contact with infected people, body fluids, or even surfaces can cause it to spread. It is VERY contagious.

Apartments/houses who don't shovel their sidewalk. :anger:

Especially on a fairly major walkway like 15th Ave is. It just becomes a packed down, frozen, bumpy mess. :ddown:

Wells Fargo, and their ability to intrude on my life even when I did not go into one of their branch locations (which is even more painful). I had to call in to activate my new credit card which was sent to me in the mail. I went online to activate, and they said I needed to call in, as this service was not available online. I then proceeded to call (which is normally an automated service), and they would not activate the card until I was connected to one of their representatives. Apparently they wanted to offer me a sales pitch over the phone for another credit card service. :x :anger:

Seriously? :chainsaw: :chainsaw:

Yes, I had to say "NO" three times before she said my card was activated. Complete with a bunch of canned sales lines etc... Boo, Wells Fargo! :ddown:

I was perusing Amazon, wanting to buy the Showtime series "Brotherhood." It ran 3 seasons before it was cancelled.

They still want $20-$30 per season, and that's with the Amazon Prime discount. :chainsaw:
I'm using this show as an example, but non-cult/non-hit shows like that, that still demand hit-show pricing are my pet peeve.

They piss me off to no end with the same crap. The teller (same lady every time I go) tries to sell me on getting a wells fargo credit card whenever I stop in to do anything else. I always give a polite "no thanks" the first time, but she NEVER just drops it. Last visit, after the third "no", she asks me if I think it's "wise" to not take advantage of this opportunity to build up my credit so I can eventually buy a house. You know, for my family, and stuff. Wouldn't want to be irresponsible or anything.

I told her: "I think somebody who needed $25 BILLION from Uncle Sugar just to stay alive should keep their damn opinions on the wise use of debt to their damn selves. Just deposit our checks please." My wife just about fainted from embarrassment and gave me an ear full in the car, but it was completely worth it. Looking into smaller local banks currently.

I have been trying to boost my omega 3 fatty acids. Planters has a Heart Healthy nut mixture that I like. Peanuts, almonds, pecans, pistachio, hazel nuts, and an ocassional walnut. It is lightly salted.

I love all of the nuts expect the damn hazel nuts. I think they are the only nut that has no sweatness. They're almost a little bitter.

Hazel nuts should only be used for decoration on a Smith and Kurns, and never eaten.

Unfortunately, modern "teller" positions are a lot closer to "salesperson" than "cash drawer operator". My fiancé is a teller at WF right now--they are forced to upsell to customers constantly (even if they know you're going to say no, or even if you're in the drive-through), and a big part of their performance evaluation is how many "solutions" they sell to customers. Most of the tellers don't actually like doing it, they would rather just give you what you need and let you go on your way.

TL;DR: Don't get on tellers for upselling; they're just doing their job. Talk to a manager instead.

I honestly do feel bad for the salespeople who have to hit a quota of service plans or credit card apps, but this particular lady is over the line, and always is. I can't imagine you convince many people to buy credit cards when your strategy is to basically call them stupid in front of their families. I know your fiance would never treat customers that way after the first "no thanks." It's part of the problem when you're a huge company and you have morons (and this branch manager is a moron) trying to manage only with numbers because their boss says "get me x number of new credit card applications this quarter".

Salesmen need to have enough people skills to know when they have a chance and when they don't. Too any companies are trying to use non sales employees to sell their product and they just don't have the right skill set.

I don't think wives understand that guys need to do this every now and then. I get "it's not her fault she has to ask the questions." And I respond with, "she'll now be able to go to her supervisor with another customer complaint."

It helps mine knows I have longer fuses for some and shorter for others. Mormons and Jahovas barely get past hello before they hear the door close. Even my wife will yell "hit the dust" if she sees one coming. Teenagers get free passes.

To add to your point, a lot of the shows are similar price no matter how many episodes are in the season. A few years back I was looking into buying the first two seasons of Parks and Recreation. The first season was 6 episodes and cost about $30. The second season had 24 episodes and was about $30 as well. HBO is the worst offender of this as all their seasons regardless of being 6, 10, or 13 episode seasons are $50.

:dup: :dup:

Can't stand that crap. 8-12 episodes of basic cable should not cost the same amount of money as 20-30 episodes of basic cable (Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The League, Archer etc. vs Criminal Minds). I can understand the specialty channels (HBO, Showtime) having a slightly higher price than the basic cable shows, but it shouldn't cost 2-7 bucks/episode.

I also bank there and it is bothersome from time to time when they try to sell something. Most of the tellers I run into are ok and drop things after a polite "No," but I have had a few that just don't hear it. Fortunately the teller I usually see lately is really pretty friendly on the eyes so an extra question or two is OK :) . I have thought about using smaller local banks, but it is hard to beat the convenience of having so many branch locations, IMO.

I used to love using a smaller local bank, but I had to switch to a large national chain due to the convenience of having a branch nearby all the time.

Might not be an issue anymore this year, but its usually because people trample it down before the owners/tenants can shovel. I live in dinkytown, and usually have no shot at shoveling. Im not going to shovel while its still snowing, but in such a busy arena, we really don't have a chance.

Like I've said before, they need to teach their employees to be able to identify potential upsells, not blindly upsell Best Buy-style.

On several occasions I have been close to demanding my money in order to take it to a different bank...

People who bitch about private schools...

Engage in class envy much? Do you realize that private schools do a better job of providing an education at a fraction of the cost of public schools? Do you understand that private schools do not have a massive pile of cash to rely upon - instead relying on tuition and donations to cover costs?

Shut the :censored: up with the bitching about private schools in the tourney. Your ignorance is showing and you're embarrassing yourself.

People who capitalize "birthday".

Incorrect: Happy Birthday John
Correct: Happy birthday, John. (Although I suppose the comma is somewhat up to the writer.)

Having attended a private school from K-8, I think my perspective lies somewhere in the middle:

Because private schools require tuition, only certain people can afford a private school education. While no one is arguing that tuition funds some amazing opportunities for those kids (better quality teachers, more modern facilities, etc.), it also creates a very specific socioeconomic demographic attending said school.

Hockey is one of the most expensive sports to put a kid through. In turn, only certain people can afford the luxury of putting their kid through organized hockey from the first time they lace up the skates. That is true whether a kid attends Minnetonka or Breck, and is not a statement on private vs. public. However, when you look through the lens of the socioeconomic class attending private school, more of those kids are afforded the opportunity to develop their skills than an average academic institution. STA will always be able to field a better team than Greenway, and a lot of the reasons for that are economic. As such, I don't think it's out of the question to suggest that privates step up or form their own class - it affords the smaller public schools the opportunity to compete where they otherwise couldn't.

I agree with this only to a point. I was told that 80% of attendees at Totino Grace are receiving assistance through the Grace endowment. It's often considered a blue-collar private school. Rather, private schools are filled with students who have parents that have greater concern for where their kids go to school (Don't worry dx, I'm generalizing here). Anybody can attend a private school. It just requires serious parental effort if they don't have financial means.

I also disagree about the facilities. I find that private schools are less modern. Even when I went to St John the Baptist, I was angry that my friends had better things at St Anthony, Irondale, Moundsview, etc..

I'm speaking as a parent who has sent kids to private school...and as a person who attended public schools from pre-K through college.

True...and at a fraction of the cost.

That may be true for some of the private schools in Minnesota, but it's certainly not the rule. My youngest is attending public school (primarily because she wanted to go to school with kids from our neighborhood). The facilities are more modern for her...and she's been blown away by the number of computers in the school, the equipment the school has and even the choices they have at lunch.

We had fundraising targets for each family when she was attending private school. I've never heard of a public school having to do that. For what it's worth, most of our property taxes go to funding public schools...and there's no exemption in Texas if your kids are attending government run schools.

I agree with this. My kids will start off in the public school system, but the minute I am not satisfied with the education they are receiving, they will be moved into the private system. I hate the thought, because I am paying pretty heavily for the local public school via property tax.

If you are talking about those complaining about certain private schools in the "A" tourney, I really think you are blinded virtue of your affinity for private schools. Simply put, powerhouse small private schools are not what the "A" tourney was created for. I find it no more appropriate that STA continues on in "A" than I would find it appropriate for a team like Minnehaha Academy to be forced into "AA." That is why I proposed the "test" of winning the title at the "A" level for a team to be forced up. I realize it likely will not happen, but it just might if the "A" tourney continues down the road it is heading on...being a playoff for the private "hockey schools" of the state. Maybe they could invite SSM.

I apologize in advance if you were arguing a different point. Like I said, I have no problem with private schools and actually admire parents who for reasons of wanting the best education for their children pay to send them. That is a completely different subject vs private schools in athletic tourneys.
President GWB said, "And it seems like Minnesota is pretty good at hockey, too."

"I think in the best interest of his career, he definitely would benefit from playing one more year of college," Gretzky said.

Has something changed in the MSHSL?

I've been out of HS for 22 years and out of Minnesota for 18. Back in the stone ages, the standard for assignment to "A" or "AA" was enrollment. Hypothetical question:

Let's say that "Lake Wobegon High School" (9-12 grade enrollment of 110 kids) has a fantastic coach and continues to have talented kids lacing up the skates for their team. A few of their alums make it to the NHL and they donate money to fund a rink and top notch equipment. Lake Wobegon dominates the class "A" tourney, finishing in first or second place nine out of ten years.

Should Lake Wobegon be pushed into AA?

I think we're confusing the cause and effect relationship here. Are the schools better or are the students better?

I think the quality is better in public, but the students in private schools have a much higher proportion of parents who are engaged and have a deep rooted desire to see their kids get all they can from their education. Since the proportion is higher, the students who graduate are typically going to succeed at a higher rate, and it creates the image that privates are across the board better.

When you have a public school, you MUST take the kids who don't want to be there. You MUST take the kids who don't have engaged parents. So while I think the proportion of kids who succeed is much, much lower in public schools, I honestly think if you have engaged parents you're just as likely to succeed if not more likely.

Where I grew up, you could say the public schools were comparable to the private schools in quality, maybe a little worse. All the things we, as taxpayers, are told we need to make sure the kids succeed (computers, new books, building additions, new AV equipment, etc) the public schools had a HUGE advantage in. The private schools spent ~ 1/3 as much money per student, but had better test scores, graduation rates, college placement rates, etc. I spent time in each system. There were good teachers in both, bad teachers in both, but the public schools had a monopoly on criminally incompetent teachers, probably because the parents actually have a say in the quality of the education their kids are receiving in the private schools. Try going to your local public school district to get a complete bonehead fired. Anything short of a felony committed by a public school employee and you'll be brushed off.

Funny, I feel the same way about you and your comments in this post. The individuals (such as me) who are complaining about private schools in the Class A state hockey tournament are not complaining one bit about the existence of private schools, nor have we questioned their educational merit. At the same time, playing Class A hockey has absolutely nothing to do with the educational realm. Finally, the private schools with similar enrollment numbers as the public schools in Class A, are not playing on a level playing field. Private schools simply are not dealing with a cross section of society like public schools (they don't have to deal with the same number of special ed students, the very poor, the unathletic, the unmotivated, etc.). Private schools are made up of a much higher percentage of students who care, are active in activities, have parents that have gone out of their way to provide opportunity for their children (speding time and money) etc. - i.e. kids who are far more likely to be successful athletically. Not only that, but private schools get to pick which kids come to their schools. Public schools play the hand they are dealt, private schools get to draw their hand out of the deck. To tell yourself otherwise, is simply burying your head in the sand.

Wow... that seems like an awfully big and divisive thing to say. As the product of a public school with an EXCELLENT public school teacher as a parent, I strongly disagree with your statement. I agree with DX's assertion that the outcomes don't tell the whole story as private school students often have more innate advantages than public school students and therefore their outcomes could be "expected" to be better on the whole.

I'd say that the 'holier than thou' attitude present in the above post is unnecessary and comes off as 'class envy' much more than chanting "public schools" at a hockey game.

I think anybody who thinks that a school like St. Thomas participating at the Class A level is what high school athletics should be about is being foolish. Of course I went to public school so I guess my opinion shouldn't count.
