I'm less than 10 minutes into Drive (had to stay home with the kids today) and I'm trying to figure out what movie I'm reminded of so far. Not as far as plot or story, but of the introduction of Gosling's charachter. The lack of dialogue, his mannerisms, the framing of the shots. I don't think I've seen any of the other movies the director has done but it's deja vu.

btw - from the previews I added Rum Diary and In The Land of Blood and Honey to my queue.

Try any of the Serge Leone westerns w/ good old Clint! That was my first thought when I saw Drive. "The Man With No Name" uses the same techniques. Also shades of "The Professional" (Natalie Portman's first film at age 10 I think), but really the westerns. Rum Dairy was a big disappointment and I admit I haven't seen Land of Blood and Honey yet. Rum Dairy was filmed YEARS ago and shelved, that's not a good sign for most films and it's true for this one. :ddown:

Tell me (us, I suppose) how you like the rest of Drive. I thought it was fantastic; the client I was with did not like it.

Fun side note: I saw Drive at Green Hills Movie Theatre in Nashville. As I entered the theater the movie was in, I turned around, and Nicole Kidman was right behind me. Pretty cool to see her within a few feet of me. I told her how much I loved her in Moulin Rouge...in my head. No words came out.

Ok, loved Drive. I think I may have been thinking of No Country due to the foreshadowing as much as anything. I sensed in those early moments it would turn brutal but honestly really had no idea it would carry that vibe going in.

The Professional is one of my favorite movies of all time. As are the the "Man with No Name" movies.

I did see Black Swan tonight. No not for the reason most would suspect. I actually have a very loose connection to the director. Anyways, I thought Portman was brilliant in that movie. Absolutely brilliant. I thought the movie as a whole was somewhat predictable and I all but called the ending five minutes into the movie. I don't think that took away from it though. I'd highly recommend it although it is definitely not a family-friendly movie.

I'm very behind on movies. I just saw the Social Network last week and thought it was phenomenal.

Next on my list is Moneyball. Is it worth seeing?

I liked Moneyball. You don't need a background on all the stats and reasons behind Beane's decision-making, but I think it would be enjoyable if you knew them going into the movie.

Just saw The Help the other night... I was pretty pessimistic about its chances of being good, but I was relatively impressed--not a bad movie.

...Apparently the movie The Help is based on the book called The Help, which is about a book that was written called The Help about the same topic. :google: :google: :google:

Underworld? There are 3 sequels/prequels out or coming out to that already. Underworld 2: Evolution; Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (prequel) and Underworld: Awakening, which comes out this year.
That just proves the studios know men will drop endless amounts of moola to see Kate in tight leather over and over with no plot change :good2: It's the same freakin' movie with the same costume.

Anonymous: yawn. I was excited to see it, and was sorely disappointed.

The Best Worst Movie: doc on the movie Troll 2, mainly focusing on the actors and their thoughts on it. Pretty good. Now I have to see Troll 2, which at the time this doc was made, was imdb's "worst movie ever."

PJ20: doc on Pearl Jam. As a fan, nothing really new, but interesting hearing the views from the band themselves, and not some author/critic/researcher.

Judge Dredd was terrible. Never saw Red Dawn. Why would they remake Spiderman? That just came out. Why would they remake Titanic? Unless they're putting Kate Winslet's hooters in 3D.

Taken 2 is now #1 on my must see list.

C'mon, I JUST saw Jackie Brown yesterday, and I love Tarantino movies. I can't just randomly watch movies, I have to be in a certain mood to watch a certain movie.

Although once I've SEEN (insert movie), I can usually watch it whenever. Like The Hangover right now.

Anyone that ha not seen the original Red Dawn needs to do a lock in play some Lionel Richie and fire up their VCR (you kids can Google VCR). It was the last time yelling, "Wolverines!!!!" didn't make me vomit.

I bet you fancy kids might even be able to get it On Demand or Netflix it.

I bet I could. And I'm not a fancy kid. I'm in the Get Off My Lawn crowd, or just about there. I didn't watch a whole lot of movies as a kid. Red Dawn was right in the infancy of my movie watching. Missed it. Never got around to seeing it. Prob will give a watch now, despite my distaste for bad 80's movies.

It was okay. I didn't know what to expect really. I think it would have been a ton better if he filmed it with a grindhouse/cheap 70's movie feel to it. It was too glossy. The story however, was awesome, as was the dialogue (typical of Tarantino movies).

Younger male hockey players needed (roughly age 16) to be extras...pay is $40. Here's the info:

"The Invitation" is a dry, heartfelt comedy/drama about unrequited love where a middle-aged recluse reunites with the recently-divorced girl he's always loved but never told. Director Brad Birkeland produced low budget independent films in Los Angeles before moving back to Minnesota to pursue writing/directing.

Wednesday February 22 in Shoreview, MN at an outdoor hockey rink. Approx times 7:30 am until 11:30 am.

$40 each.

Looking for 3 male hockey players to be age 16 and 1 male hockey goalie to be age 16. All races. They must be comfortable skating and stick-handling the puck and have their own hockey skates, shin-pads, and stick. Preferably current hockey players.

The hockey goalie must have full pads and equipment.

It's for a flashback scene that takes place in 1989 so if you have access to period clothing that would be nice.

To submit, send contact info and headshot to jeremy@walden-entertainment.com.

Jackie Brown is an excellent movie.

I loved the Elmore Leonard novel the movie was based on and was completely disappointed in the movie. Tarantino ruined the dialogue from the book and made some of the characters so over the top (Ordell Robbie) that they became nothing more than caricatures. And I loved Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction so that made it even more of a let down.

Don't think I posted this yet but I went and saw Safe House the other day.
Really enjoyed it. It was a good CIA-style spy movie (lots of betrayal, lots of WTF moments).
Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds were great together (a pleasant surprise because it's a roll I was surprised to see Reynolds take--he seemed more likely to stick to the Rom-Com genre, especially after the bust that was Green Lantern).

I liked it. But then again, I like almost all spy movies.

I actually saw Safe House today. I wasn't excited by any means to see it, but it was entertaining. Plenty of action with a bit of plot mixed in that wasn't overly complicated, yet still made you think. Movies like these are much better on the big screen.

Safe House was predictible but entertaining. Denzel was his usual cool self. Reynolds was better than expected.

From a public health perspective, it was actually relatively reasonable. Of course, several roles were compressed into one or a few, and a few key moments were dramatized, but public health professors at the U were not unsatisfied with the portrayal.

Yeah, I remember a big article in the Star Diaper about the accuracies. A few things were bent, but overall, not Hollywood-ized.

Took my daughter to see Phantom Menace in 3D...don't bother. It probably looks better on Blu Ray.

So obviously I watched out of order, but I just got done with LOTRTT and overall it seemed better than the 3rd, although to be honest it felt like I had seen it before. And how the hell did they get Optimus Prime to do the voice of the head tree?

I'm a bit disappointed to see (after a bit of an absence from GPL) that "Act of Valor" hasn't had any play in this thread.

See it. Be prepared to be motivated, saddened and proud...and all at the same time. Fantastic movie.

I saw it. Slightly disappointed in the script but the operational scenes were the best of any movie I've ever seen. I thought they did a terrific job of showing/conveying the daring spirit that comprises SOF personnel. The scene with Senior interrogating Christo was priceless. The greatness and courage of these men never ceases to amaze me.

I saw it on Tuesday and forgot to post about it because I went home and went to bed. Sorry STG
I really, really liked it. The operations they showed, the missions, their movements, etc. were all very very cool. Really amazing how coordinated the movements are and how well timed they are. It's easy to capture it on film of a movie where you can re-shoot the scene over and over again. The fact that they do what they did in that movie without getting the chance to yell "CUT! TRY IT AGAIN!" in real-life situations is incredibly impressive. Their first rescue mission?  That was impressive.

Saw Rampart this afternoon, it was okay. I love Woody Harrilson, that was one of the good things, other than that :bored:
BUT I saw a trailer for a film called Goon.
Hope that comes through correctly, it's that rare species the Red Band trailer. :dup: Don't see those often in the theater.

Magnolia Pictures is an American film distributor, and is a holding of 2929 Entertainment, owned by Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban. Magnolia was formed in 2001 by Bill Banowsky and Eamonn Bowles, and specializes in both foreign and independent films.

Films distributed by Magnolia typically appear on the cable television channel HDNet Movies (also owned by Cuban) during their first week of release.

It's already in theatres (sic) in Canada. And on the internet, if you know the right places to go. :biggrin2:

It's corny 'Murica acting that is standard of most westerns back in the day. But it's awesome. And it's The Duke.

Just watched Game Change, the movie about McCain's 2008 presidential campaign/selection of Palin as VP. Great movie and I definitely recommend it. A few of the staffers on McCain's campaign have already endorsed the movie as being accurate and well-done.

Two that I read about, sorry. Two < few I suppose. Might be more than the two I'll mention, but I am not sure. Steve Schmidt (Woody Harrelson in the movie), McCain campaign's chief strategist, and Nicolle Wallace, a chief aide for Palin in 2008, both called it highly credible and said the movie describes what happened in those ten weeks or so of the campaign. Julianne Moore plays Palin, and honestly, looks like a dead ringer, moreso than Tina Fey. My girlfriend walked into the apartment from work during the movie and thought it was Palin.
