Monday, January 9, 2012 - Submitted by BCHL Media

Penticton Vees defenceman Mike Reilly has been named the BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 8, the league announced Monday.

Reilly registered three goals and four assists in helping the Vees to three more victories as their win streak reached 21 games. Reilly, who was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets last year, had points in each game last week and was named 1st Star with two goals and two assists in a triumph over rival Vernon.

The 6-foot, 165-pound blueliner is now sixth in BCHL scoring with 17 goals and 38 assists on the campaign.

Honourable mentions this week go to Cowichan Valley Capitals forward Brett Knowles (one goal, six assists, 1st Star, 2nd Star), Penticton Vees goalie Michael Garteig (three wins, 1.33 GAA, .948 sv%), Capitals forward Matt Brown (three goals, four assists, 3rd Star) and Vees forward Travis St. Denis (five goals, two assists, 1st Star, 2nd Star).

You never know... he flirted with the idea of playing for Portland (WHL) this past summer. Maybe if he doesn't see as much opportunity as he once did here, he may go that way in the end. Just saying you can't rule that out in his case.

Would it be any easier breaking into the WHL?

in the WHL games i have been to, the rinks are small and there is very little room to operate. i would think michaelson would have a better shot at success on mariuccis olympic sheet of ice.

He'd also be playing against mostly teens in the WHL as opposed to mature 21 or 22 year old players.

Brady Skjei has been trended well it looks like. (#18)
Michaelson is #83, Nanne #199. I'm still surprised Michaelson's that high. The scouts must see something that isn't translating into production.

If you consider that the European players aren't included in on that list, he's not all that high. Probably somewhere in the 4th to 6th round range.

I'd expect Nanne to go undrafted.

Agreed on both counts. I'm still surprised that a (supposed to be) scorer who apparently is having a difficult time making a power play unit in the USHL is being heavily considered as a draft prospect at all. That tells me that either a) Waterloo is a jacked team, b) the scouts think he's being misused, or c) the scouts think he's going to mature quite a bit during the next several years.

Or he was ranked so high in the beginning that they have a hard time letting go of the fact that just wasn't as good as they thought early on.

To be fair, there were quite a few people who thought he was quite good. MNHockeyHub did an article about a year-and-a-half ago ranking their "Super Sophomores" (juniors to be). I believe Michaelson was #1, Skjei #5, with Lucia and I believe Kloos and Zajac rounding out the top 5. Hard to believe now given the different directions some have gone.

The difference is MN Hockey Hub aren't professional talent evaluators. They are more or less reporters. I hold scouts to a different standard than that. He has the speed... the hands might be a different story. I think the lack of really good finishing skills are what will probably make him a 3rd line type of player in college.

Yeah, but even a few months ago there some of us on here talking about how he was toying with HS competition and basically doing whatever he wanted to out there. It's not like there were many on here who foresaw that he would be struggling this much in the USHL. (especially while a player younger than he is tearing up the league while playing the same position on the same team.) The biggest drawback people had about him was his work ethic. Now I'm starting to wonder if that really was the case. Maybe he's just not as skilled as previously thought, and his speed covered-up glaring holes in his game at AV that cannot be in Waterloo.

Although the Hopkins goalie was suspect last night, Lettieri netted 4 last night and has 37 points in 14 games.

He must have had an off night when I saw him. That is understandable. Everyone does.
President GWB said, "And it seems like Minnesota is pretty good at hockey, too."

"I think in the best interest of his career, he definitely would benefit from playing one more year of college," Gretzky said.

Mike Reilly returns to the Penticton lineup.

Hidden Content...
Friday, January 27TH

REILLY'S HAT-TRICK PACE VEES IN A ROMP
PENTICTON, BC- Each of the three Reilly brothers scored once, including Ryan recording his first BCHL hat-trick, as the Penticton Vees blitzed Salmon Arm 9-2 Friday.

The win pushes the Vees winning streak to 27 games; two from tying the 23 year-old record

Connor, Ryan and Mike all found the score sheet; Mike first on the power-play in the opening period. However, none of the three scored the opening goal; Captain Logan Johnston notched his eighth of the season not even two minutes into the game.

The lead was short lived as the Silverbacks evened the game just fifty-five seconds later off the blade of Alex Gillies.

The goal seemed to spark Penticton, not Salmon Arm as the Vees went on to score five consecutive goals to take a 6-1 lead into the intermission.

Highlighting the scoring was Mike Reilly marking his return to the line-up with a power-play goal and his Brother Ryan scoring twice in the period; including a power-play marker of his own.

Both teams changed their goaltenders to start the second; The Vees spelling off Mike Garteig for Chad Katunar. Salmon Arm replaced starter Kurt Williams for Adam Clark.

Penticton scored two more goals in the middle frame; the scoring staying within the Reilly family. Ryan secured his hat-trick with a short-handed effort just sixty-two seconds into the period; Connor finishing off a well-executed two-on-one with Travis St. Denis.

The two Reilly scores bookended the Silverbacks second goal, again off the stick of Alex Gillies.

The third period saw the scoring slow down but not before Joey Benik buried his eighteenth, on a lovely passing play with Steven Fogarty in the Salmon Arm end.

The Vees have not allowed more than two goals in game in their fourteen contests, dating back to December 9th in Victoria.

The win also pushes the Vees win streak at home to twelve games.

FINAL SCORE: 9-2

Attendance: 2,179
Shots: 39-18 Vees
Power-Plays: Vees 2/3 ‘Backs 0/4
Three Stars: 1) Ryan Reilly 2) Joey Benik 3) Travis St. Denis
Hardest Working Vee: Mike Reilly

It will be nice to see kids like Travis Boyd, Sam Warning, hopefully Nate Condon and Kyle Rau stay until they are Seniors. That would be nice with the talent in the next couple of years to have some Senior Leadership. I am figuring that Bjugstad and Haula will be gone in the next couple of years. I am not sure how long Holl, Alt and Schmidt will be around, but they are sure improving defensively.

sounds like michaelson moved up to cammaratas line due to another teammates injury. nice to see michaelson finding big success with new linemates between the prospects game and now waterloo. hope their teammate is fine but would really like to see michaelson stay on that line for a while.

connor reilly is 3rd in bchl scoring. keeping right there with mario lucia. will be 21 years old when the puck drops this fall. any idea what he brings from a physicality standpoint? looks like he has the height but still only listed at 170..

Hopefully AJ's game is back on. He had a good showing at the all star game and has played better since then. I heard MG was there on Sunday for Waterloo's game. Maybe a pep talk will help too.

Alright, like louie, but all his grandsons will play for gophers, who is doing the recruiting..... For Lou to state his freshman grandson will play for the gophers, sounds smug.

There are alot of good players in MN why does it seam all current recruits of former players, connections (louie) or from coaches home town (GR). Just asking.

First off, your statement is false. There are only a handful of recruits that have family ties to the program (Nanne, Letierri, Bischoff (& Grand Rapids)). Looking at the current roster, you could include Bjugstad.

The rest of the current recruits have no connection that I'm aware of.

Below is the list per Heisenberg:

Brodzinski's father was a walk-on at the "U" back in the days when there was a J.V. team and walk-ons were much more common than they are now, Don't recall if he ever got into a varsity game. He tranferred to St. Cloud and holds many of the school scoring records from their D-II days.

I just checked on A.J.'s stats. After going pointless in 8 straight games, he's got 8 points in his last 8 games. He had 7 points in the 25 games prior to that streak, and has passed about a half-dozen players on Waterloo in points during it. Maybe the light finally came on in his head?

Cammarata has fallen to a tie for 9th in the league in scoring, but still leads Waterloo by 11 points with 39 in 35 games.

Are there concerns about the goaltending situation next year? I mean, it appears Shibrowski will see 0 action this year, barring (god forbid) a Patterson injury down the stretch. So we'll have a Sophomore with no experience and I'm assuming a Freshman backup.

I would assume that Shibrowski and Wilcox will split time, with the likely result being that Wilcox will begin to take over the "higher leverage" games as the season progresses... that had been my assumption.

I think it is always preferable to have a returning guy with experience in goal. But we have to make it work. The one positive is we will probably have all of our d-men back and two great defensive recruits coming in so it should make life easier on the goalies.
