New things on GPL?

Postby Jupiter » Thu 5/26/11 4:16 pm

So.... What new things/features do you want on GPL? I am pretty much open to anything...

The Portal page is the starting point for most users. Is there anything you would like added to that page?

I may add a Classified Ads MOD. This would a nice addition for people who want to sell tickets and other items on GPL. It's just cleaner that using the message board.

There is a Sports Prediction MOD that shows some promise. I am guessing it will be a while before anything decent is up and running. I'll keep my eye on it though.

Those MODs are still in the testing phase.... but there are MODs that have been officially released. Let me know if any of them interest you at all. Click here for a list.

So what would you like to have on GPL?

My request would be to increase the size of the links for the threads. On my phone the links are very small and my fingers are very fat. :D

Does anyone have an opinion about the user reputation bar - ala the uscho forums? I think it would be a nice feature, but not a necessity by any means

The Sports Predictions mod would be the bomb. One of the other forums I was once active on had a vBookie application - we'd bet on sports outcomes using virtual dollars. It was quite fun.

As an aside, another thing I'd like to see - and was thinking of tonight as I did laundry - was development of Android and iPhone apps for GPL. The Jeep forum I belong to has an Android app, so it can't be impossible (it also uses BB Code). If you're interested, I'm happy to donate my time and complete lack of skills to the effort.

The Jeep forum (link) app allows you to read threads and post replies. It works flawlessly. Here's a link to the app on Android Market:

It's nice in theory, but it is easily abusable. On USCHO, someone figured out the mathematical formula, and "rep-marathons" went into full effect so many could achieve the maximum reputation level. Also, "neg-bombing" (Person A negative reps and/or insults Person B, Person B calls for a neg-bombing, and others negative rep Person A in full force).

My point is, it's widely considered useless, except as a means for PMing, which USCHO doesn't have, but GPL does.

There is a phpBB-Mobile MOD that is being worked on that may work instead of creating an App.
Read about the MOD here: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... &t=2092248

Then visit this URL with iOS or Android and tell me what you think

That's very nice, Jup.

If there's a way to work it into GPL, that would be fantastic. I'm guessing a fair number of GPLers log into the site via phone.

That BB mod would be great.

There are a few other things that are on the site that are a challange with a phone (android at least). I can't get the menus to work properly on my android since they get triggered from a mouse hover. I would be nice if they were able to use a click for the drop-down. Or if the menu structure was in another spot or required the click only when on a mobile device that would be awesome. Currently, a click on the menu headings causes the menu to disappear. :(

For example, when I am at the game and I want to look up standings, scoreboard, schedule, etc. I have a couple bookmarked but not all of them.

There is an Android app called BBfoc that is free and can pull up GPL. I just downloaded last night and it isn't a great app but perhaps workable. I used it for a few minutes and it did a force close so I imagine my browser or the MOD will be better.

The only problem with the Mobile MOD is that I believe it would work only in the message board area. All other pages, including the Portal, would not work.

As for the menu problems with Android. I have no clue on how to fix that. For iOS the first touch is considered the mouse over, so it works well.

I added a Twitter BBCode if you want to post the contents of a Tweet. It just looks clean. Use it if you wish.

Basically you just enter the exact name of the twitter account you are posting and then enter the text between the bracket.

Code: Select all
[twitter=account name here]text here[/twitter]

Example: [twitter=gopherpucklive]Rumors heating up on the web.... John Hill out as assistant coach at the U. Mike Guentzel back in.[/twitter]

Result:
Tweet from: @gopherpucklive
Rumors heating up on the web.... John Hill out as assistant coach at the U. Mike Guentzel back in.

You can click the account name which will bring you directly to the home page of the Twitter account you posted. In the example above you would click "@gopherpucklive"

I have also made the NOTE BBCode available as well. I have used this for a few months. It's basically uses the same as the Twitter code, but you have the different note icons. As of right now there are 7 that you may use. I have a few personal ones as well. If you want me to add one, just let me know.

I personally like using these to have something stand out. Like an off topic comment or question. Warning a user. Posting a Strib quote or a PR from the UofM.

Example:
Code: Select all
[note=stop]Stop what you are doing![/note]
Result:
Stop what you are doing!

Here is the current list of Note= that you can use.
note=note
note=stop
note=offtopic
note=question
note=strib (I use this when posting quotes from Strib articles)
note=uofm (I use this for posting press releases from the U)
note=warn

This is not new, but I just noticed it.

On June 30th GPL hit the 3000 user mark. "SJUGuy" was #3000.

I am testing out a slideshow that will be used on the main home page. It's not an automatic slideshow, but I didn't want an automatic one. It's just a simple css styled photo gallery that will allow me to have more than one photo on the main home page and also have text that goes with it.

I am still working out a few kinks, but....

#1 - Does it work on your browser? Let me know which browser and operating system you are using.
#2 - Does it look okay? I wanted to keep it simple. I does look a bit goofy in the text are when loading, but after it's loaded it seems to look fine on my computer.

Thanks for the feedback guys... I hope to get this version nailed down and then make a few different versions based on size. I could make it much more versatile with scripts and everything, but I really wanted to keep it simple. Having different sized versions will be very easy to do.

I am actually using an iframe to pull an html file that contains the code. Using iframes can be dangerous on a message board, but that is only if you allow full urls. The only input from here is a filename, the rest of the url is hardcoded to a specific location. So it's not like a user could use their own code.

The only thing I don't like is when you click an image, it moves the slideshow to the top of the page. I don't like that, but I am not sure how I could fix it. But I can live with it to keep this thing simple.

Also tested on (bleh) Windows XP:

Firefox 7.0.1

The image moves to the top of the page on Chrome, but stays in place on Firefox.

Nice job on the mods!

I have an issue on my HP touchpad that other touch screen (iPad etc.) users might have. If I touch on the top menus, Home - Team - Community - About, the submenus appear then go away and you can't select them. The first time you touch the heading they flash but then are gone. Anyone know what I can do? Anyone use an ipad or other touch screen and have the same problem? My habit is to always go to Community - Portal Home to see most current postings.

I don't know what to do about that problem...

The menus do work on iOS (iPad, iPhone). Basically when you touch the menu it opens. Then next touch is the selection, but it only highlights it. You then need to touch the highlighted selection and it will go. But like I said, that is only on iOS... I do not have an Android devise, so I really can't test anything.

It's just a standard javascript menu, so I don't know why it does not work on Android but works on iOS.

Hey Ex Goldy..... Can you give it a try now? There was an update to the javascript for the menu, so I applied it. You may have to refresh, but let me know if anything has changed. Or if anyone else can test the menu's with Android, that would be great... I am guessing that nothing has changed, but you never know.

Figures!!!

Though I am not too shocked that it does not work on IE. It's the least compliant browser ever.

EDIT: As a webmaster.... I would really like to see Internet Explorer go by the wayside. Unfortunately too many people still use it on GPL. The percentage of IE users here is at 47% which keeps getting lower and lower each year. It was 76% in back in 2007. But geez it is such a piece of junk compared to everything else out there.

F. U. Internet Explorer!!!

I am thinking about skipping IE compatibility when it comes to adding things to this website. Maybe it will help move people over to a real browser or at least go to IE9. It looks like only 7% of the IE users here are using IE9. Most are on IE8 (70%), though the scary part is that almost 4% of the IE users here are still using IE6... Yikes!

The problem is that so many of the companies I have to deal with require IE8 or some even IE7. Most also are not compatible with Firefox. That is the only reason I have IE. For all web browsing I use Firefox.

Well..... now it's not only just the IE users I have to worry about. I have no answer for the menu problem for Android users. Android is now making up 3% of the traffic on GPL. I assume that most of those users are just using bookmarks to get around.

To be honest... I create things here to work on my home computer. I mostly use Safari, but also have Firefox and Chrome for testing. All of this is on a Mac. I do have a PC Laptop where I can check how things look on IE, but I just don't bother checking anymore.

It just really sucks when I want to add little features that I think people would like and it's always IE that messes everything up.

I'm not sure I saw any comments from an iMac user. Seems to work great here!

It also works great on the iPhone 4s

Any thoughts on using a chat room that is compatible with iPad or iPhone?

There are a few non-flash chat options out there that I have looked at... The problems is that I really like the current chat a lot and have not found anything that is just as good to replace it. There is a chat mod called "MChat" that would work on this message board, but I just don't know if I want to install it.

I touch the menu item and turns yellow the submenu doesn't appear.
I'll see if I can find someone who knows about web pages and see what they say.

I've been having this problem also. The only time I can get the drop-down menus to work is when I hit "Refresh" and then I have to go to Community quickly and hit Portal Home before the page re-loads. I'm using Firefox if that is relevant.

Okay, I thought that this was a problem that only I was having. I am running Firefox 7 with Windows XP. This just started yesterday for me, I am on here enough to remember when it started happening. :oops:

The original post was only about my hp touchpad - touch the menu item and the submenu appeared but didn't stay there.
Now I tried using google chrome on windows 7, I click on the menu (Community), submenu appears then disappears, do this twice, third time it stays and I can select it.
Went to internet explorer and after 2 clicks the submenu will stay up and I can select it.

On the HP touchpad the menu item turns yellow but no submenu appears.

Free Audio Streams for WCHA teams....

On the GPL Portal page (left side), I have updated the audio stream links block. It's just links to free audio streams from the WCHA teams. I am still updating it, but I have added UND & UW which in previous years was not free. Some links are to iHeart Radio, which means you can find these station on the iHeart Radio App as well. Other links will have Flash streaming or will only play in you favorite audio players. (ITunes).

I just finished up by adding DU and UNO.... Looks like Anchorage is the only holdout, but their stream is not free. At least I can't find a free one. But having every other WCHA team will have Anchorage covered, so I think we're good to go.

Okay Android/Mobile users....

If you scroll to the bottom of any page on GPL, you should see some links that I added that should help you navigate the website. Please let me know if it works for you or not.

Oh.... Also let me know how they look.

I am messing around with the CSS so that it looks bigger on Mobile than it does on a regular browser. If that works on your Android phones, I may just have it show up for you only. Right now I have the font showing up small on a regular browser, but much larger on a mobile one.

EDIT:

Here is an example of what it looks like on a normal browser.

Here is an example of what it looks like on my iPod touch.

Can someone post or send me a screen grab of what the footer looks like on your Android phone? I ask because Android may not pick up the correct CSS file so I may need to make adjustments.

Try Firefox for Android. I'm not sure why, but Android's default browser seems to want to make the page too wide.

When I view a thread GPL on my iPad or iPhone and press the back button to go back to the home page, it does not take me back to the original home page I was on. It takes me back to the home page from a couple days ago.

That's strange... I have never had that problem on iOS. It sounds like a caching problem on your device.

Either that or I truly can alter the space time continuum.

Who knows how long this setting has been turned off.... maybe years?

I have always thought that if you made your email public, it would show up in your profile. Then on the opposite side, if you didn't make it public, only Moderators and Admins could see the email address.... Well, apparently there was a global setting that hid everyone's email no matter what their settings were. I have turned that setting off, so if you email is set to public people will now be able to see your email address.

If you want to check your email setting, just go to the Board Preferences tab in your control panel. It's the first option on wether users can contact you via email.

"LIKE" POST MOD

I am in the process of adding a "LIKE" post MOD. This will allow you to like an individual post similar to the like feature on Facebook. Right now I am working out a few bugs, but you will see "Like" at the bottom of posts. You won't see them in your own posts. It looks like in your profile on the left it will tell you how many times your have liked and how many time you have been liked by someone else.

The MOD installed it at the bottom of each post, but I may move it around a little bit so it looks good. Right now it looks like it's missing the tiny graphics that go with it, so I'll have to look at that.

Looks like I just needed to clear my browser cache to have the graphics part of the link show up correctly.

At the top of the Main Forum you will see # new like(s) received. Clicking that will give you a popup of the most recent posts that someone has liked. I believe that you will also get a small popup if you are in a thread and get a new LIKE.

I need to work on the color scheme a bit with the popups and the like part at the bottom of each post, but I think it's a great start.

Is there a way to get rid of the second red line? The one separating the signature from the "like bar". It seems unnecessary, and I think it would look a lot better.
