No...Ski-u-mah's saying that the Broadmoor will go to the NCHC, and Viking's saying it stays with the WCHA.

But based on what Jup said earlier, it's a safe bet the Broadmoor will travel to the NaCHo league (with the last team to have won it), no? OR is Viking saying that it stays with the League? :confused2:

The WCHA in 2013-14 will only have 2 schools in their own conference that have won a WCHA league or playoff title. Michigan Tech last won the regular season WCHA title back in 1976 and Northern Michigan won it in 1991.

why would you even assume a trophy goes with the last team to win it? That doesn't happen in ANY sport that I know of. The sponsor determines where it "goes", a winning team "holds" it, not "owns" it.

We can look back 730 days when UNO finished the season ahead of Michigan and Ohio State in the CCHA.

And one time...St Cloud won a NCAA tourney game...... :bored:

I am not saying they cannot be a great team for years to come. I would just put my money on the Duluths and St Clouds of the hockey world before UNO. But who knows, maybe Blais loves Omaha and coaches until hes 85.

I have to disagree with you on this one. I think UNO hockey with all of the athletic department resources (ie: $$), an 11,000 seat arena (and a new arena possible in the near future), and 'large' city will finish ahead of UMD and SCSU most seasons.

When did they move to a smaller arena? I thought they played in the Qwest Center. That seats 16,000.

They are trying to copy the Big10 and were trying to find a couple of teams as sh*tty as Penn State & OSU. However this was tough to accomplish so they settled with SCSU & W. Mich

Seems to me I watched tDogs in the semis in Boston the year Jr. won the Hobey & DU won it's 1st of 2 in a row. Then they (tUMD) won it last year at the X. I can't recall being at any F4 games for the U in that time period. I distinctly recall being told by a strong believer in UMD hockey that she thought Sandy was an upgrade as the coach & that better days were ahead for tDogs.
Now back to our regularly scheduled thrash talking programming.

My bad...I was in Columbus the next year.....I do remember the hooker walking out side the motel we stayed at and the look on the faces in the Pro Football HoF trip minivan when I showed them the size of the knife in the dresser drawer that was the rooms "security system".....Too bad the Gophers were there only in body & not spirit. The greenies put a major beat down on them & after seeing that a$$whoopin' I have blocked it out of my memory, just like I can't remember watching something that was alleged to have occured in GF where a unnamed purple team eliminated the lads.
The Gopher program has NOTHING to be crowing about & to have it's fans talking $hit just adds fuel to the fire of 'Gopher arrogance'.
FHG wanna be? You know better than that. I haven't been in tToga in years.
I'm afraid I'll be a season ticket holder until they pull them because I refuse their extortion demands.

Re: new super conference (NCHC)

Postby Gopherguy05 » Sun 10/02/11 9:57 pm

This was at the bottom of the AM1500 story on the Gopher Game. Looks like No Notre Dame

Irish not coming west

The other college hockey news of the day came from the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference, which announced that it will begin play with eight teams in 2013-14. What that really means, is that the new alliance of Colorado College, Denver, Miami (Ohio), Minnesota Duluth, Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota, St. Cloud State and Western Michigan is no longer waiting around for Notre Dame to make a decision.

The NCHC had extended an invite to the Irish, who are still playing in the soon-to-be-defunct Central Collegiate Hockey Association, but the NCHC had imposed, then extended, a deadline, which the folks in South Bend apparently failed to meet. Notre Dame, according to many, is looking for a conference home which will allow the school to have its own television contract.

In the wake of the NCHC announcement, reports began swirling immediately, including one in the South Bend Tribune, that the Irish (currently ranked number one in the nation) will announce they are joining Hockey East as soon as Wednesday. That Boston-based conference is home to such national heavyweights as Boston College, Boston University, New Hampshire and Maine. Notre Dame's new on-campus arena opens later this month.

Kevin Pates of Duluth is reporting that the NaCHo Conference had Joel Maturi as a finalist for its first commissioner job.

Pates is also reporting that Maturi turned them down.

You seriously cannot make this stuff up.

Well, you kind of did make it up.

The National Collegiate Hockey Conference is expected to name its first commissioner in January, but it will not be Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi, who declined the new league’s offer to be interviewed for the job.

You're not the only one to have missed it, and to even consider Maturi for the job makes me ill and worry about who they actually will pick, but he declined an interview, not a job offer.

These last two posts bring such joy to my heart.
The name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back -H.Brooks

st8ofhockey: Is that a photocollage of a dick? Oh wait, that's Patrick Stewart

psych: haha, damnit dx, your phone is drunk again
dxmnkd316: f*** you, I can't stop any time I want
dxmnkd316: err wait

I don't think I'm always right. I just find it hard to operate on the opposite assumption.

Maturi probably realized he can't leave the job he's got now because he will be exposed as a complete dope. He's got too good of a scam running now. Well, I guess he's already been exposed to us but the execs need to realize this too and actually take some action to correct this problem.

The article itself noted the other finalists. And if you think that a sitting D-I athletic director of a B1G school (even if he's lame-duck) would even be asked to interview (or allow a denial of interview to leak) without being a finalist, you're off your rocker. They can't even interview D-I football coaches without having fans tracking airplane tail numbers, and you seem to think the turndown of an interview of an AD in the most powerful college conference in the land (note: not necessarily the performance best, mind you) doesn't mean he is necessarily a finalist? :biggrin2:

In other (more pressing) news, Schlossman is reporting that the NCHC will announce a 16-game deal with CBS College Sports.

This tells me that Versus (now NBC Sports) is likely going to hang with ND and Hockey East, and Fox Sports will hang with the BTN (which it partly owns). Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the NCHC product, though, I suppose, better than nothing.

So the NaCHos are starting from behind the 8-ball on one of their other main complaints about Bruce McLeod: the media deal.

Oh yeah, they've got their commish, too: Jim Scherr, a former Olympic wrestler who was head of the USOC but was ousted in 2009 (allegedly for a hands-off style). In fairness to him, however, he did an admirable job stabilizing the USOC after the Salt Lake City Olympics fiasco.

So you're saying that he didn't even interview, but yet is (was) a finalist for the job. Ok. I disagree.

I don't really, which is why I didn't really argue. I'm just glad it's not a Sioux straw man as commissioner.

False assumption. Women have ESP installed in their minds. They can "hear" a man, no matter where he is. You could be on a spaceship traveling to another galaxy, and you'd still be wrong.

after tonight's proof of UND's "class", I won't miss them one iota once the new leagues form.

So the NCHC gets a national tv contract with CBS Sport Network...

They will show 18 regular season game and the league tournament semi and final. This will probably benefit schools like UMD & SCSU locally. But as part of this national contract, none of those teams can be on other national networks during the regular season. They can only be on those networks if the team they are playing are on that network.

So a team like North Dakota which has their home games on FoxCollegeSports, gets screwed since they can no longer be on that network. They could only be on a regional network like FSN. Which we know will not happen.

The UND fans can't be too thrilled about this. I think they have around 20 games on FCS this season. So UND fans in the Twin Cities and other part of the country can watch those games. Under the new contract, that will no longer be the case.

Not sure how it's a "screw-up." Only UND is on a "national" network right now. The other 7 are only on local or regionally (Denver) and those agreements remain in place. Really only a potential negative for UND, but for all others, a major plus. CBS sports does a great job with college hockey - much better than NBC Sports or BTN currently.

I would imagine this is similar to BTN's contract with its schools?

I agree that it's good for the other schools..... I just think it's funny that UND, a school that really wanted out of the WCHA, is getting screwed.

I think the B10 contact is they pick what games and FSN gets the rest. Jup would know best.

As of right now the BTN gets first dibs on all Gopher hockey games. After they pick the games they want, FSN can pick up whatever is left over. I have no idea if that deal will still be the case once the Gophers start playing in the B1G. But that is how it has been working for a while now.

No doubt it hurts UND's reach. When their SID is emphasizing that UND home games will still be viewable to out of state fans through other means, it is basically saying... "Hey, you can still watch our games on your 20 inch computer monitor as opposed to sitting on your recliner and watching it on your 50 inch TV." I'm sure that makes their fans feel so much better. ;)

This TV deal and how it affects UND makes it pretty obvious why Notre Dame passed on the NCHC. No way in hell would Notre Dame give up its national TV rights to join a band of small schools with far less brand power than Notre Dame has on its own.

In the end, the TV talk is pretty overrated as it is. As we discussed on Twitter, if a game on NBC Sports (which is considered mainly a hockey network) is only attracting 74,000 viewers for a contest between well known brands in Michigan and Notre Dame (who also have sizable alumni bases), you'll be fortunate if you see half of that for a game between small schools like UMD and UND. That's not really much to get all that worked up about.

According to what Maturi told me not long ago, this is their understanding of how things will work moving forward as well. The Gophers will have the best of both worlds in that regard.

It also helps that Fox own 49% of BTN.

It doesn't affect me at all since I rarely watch UNDSN, but I'm curious if this means that they can't broadcast out of the region at all or if they now have to broadcast with another network owned by CBS or one of its partners. I've always had the impression that UND was in the driver's seat with the NCHC, so it seems surprising to me that they'd jump into the CBS Sports thing with such a huge sacrifice. Back to ESPNU?

This deal isn't so hot for UND. They are sacrificing the FCS deal which airs all of UND's home games nationally for a deal that'll get them maybe 5 games that'll be aired nationally. Only small plus is they televise in HD.

But as it is now, outside of the home games that CBS College Sports will air nationally, no other sports network that can be seen nationally can air UND home games. Only way to watch the other homes games will be relying on Midcontinent/UNDSN which is only available in ND, SD, and parts of Minnesota. Though people can pick up the channel if they have FTA satellite. I'm assuming that'll still be the case.

So for UND fans outside of Midcontinent/UNDSN's regional...gonna have to go back to webcasts or purchase an FTA satellite if they wanna watch UND home games that aren't aired on CBS College Sports.

You have to wonder how this will affect recruiting.

Looks like the Big Ten conference will be on t.v. pretty much every weekend, especially Mn.
( Either Big Ten Network, or FSN )

With the limit t.v the other conferences have ( NCHC ) I wonder how much this hurts this.

Lets face it, recruits like being on t.v :D
