Love the comment at the bottom: "They should do this to every building in Detroit"

Red Dawn was the first movie to be RELEASED with a PG-13 rating. The Flamingo Kid was the first movie to RECEIVE the PG-13 rating but was released after Red Dawn.

When is Hollywood gonna get the hint that people want NEW stuff...not remakes of classics?? I've refused to see (and will continue to) most remakes...Omen, Amityville Horror, Footloose, Karate Kid, etc, etc. Now they're remaking Red Dawn? :ddown:

Or movies that feature Adam Sandler...twice (Jack and Jill)? J. Edgar looks like it could be fantastic with Leo DiCaprio.

I had to suffer through Grown-Ups when I went home to visit family last summer. Apparently kids think Adam Sandler is still funny. It kind of reminds me of the Awesome-O episode of South Park where Cartman pitches all those movie idea with Adam Sandler.

J Edgar looks good, Anonymous is intriguing, The Immortals I'm undecided on, The Rum Diary is one I am very curious about since Depp just doesn't do ANY movie anymore.

It just seems to me that there are currently no "bankable" actors/actresses so they are resorting to remakes/sequels.

Didn't someone post this earlier about Will Smith being the last "bankable actor" left out there? apologies if this is a re-post...

The Legend of Will Smith

...found a list of the 10 top-grossing movies of all time. "We looked at them and said, O.K., what are the patterns?" Smith recalls. "We realized that 10 out of 10 had special effects. Nine out of 10 had special effects with creatures. Eight out of 10 had special effects with creatures and a love story."

But it was the cheerful, over-the-top 1995 action film Bad Boys that established the erstwhile Prince as a box-office royal in the making. Since then, he has consistently delivered hits, most often as a good-natured guy saving the rest of us from the trauma of aliens, robots, crooks or poor dating habits. Commercial disappointments, like the golfing flop The Legend of Bagger Vance, are rare. "I look at movies in their essence," Smith says. "Will that idea sell? The last man on Earth is the essence of I Am Legend. It's a concept that's primal and connects to all those ideas of loneliness and abandonment." Occasionally Smith chooses art over commerce, on a character drama like Ali or Pursuit of Happyness, his two Oscar-nominated roles, but even then his pragmatism outweighs his passion. "Pursuit of Happyness is essentially a movie about a black homeless guy who gets a job," he says. "There's nowhere near my fee for that movie. This thing has to be under $50 million."
Suddenly, it all makes sense: "ND produces enough sugarbeets that produce enough sugar to sweeten 27 billion gallons of Kool-Aid." ND Fun Facts Image :ahhh:

IMO Johnny Depp is bankable as Jack Sparrow or in Tim Burton movies. Be interesting to see how Rum Diary does. I don't think it will draw simply because Johnny Depp is in it.

It used to be that you could put Julia Roberts (Overrated clap.clap.clap.clap.clap), Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Arnold, Bruce Willis in a movie and it would be a hit regardless. I personally just don't see anyone like that now.

Because of this, they are taking these formerly bankable stars and having them reprise their roles in hopes of capitalizing on both their name and role. Will Smith is making Men in Black III, Harrison Ford was in Indy 4, Bruce Willis is making Die Hard 5, Mike Meyers is making Austin Powers 4.

1) Because new story ideas are too risky, both for the Hollywood studios and for the audience. The audience doesn't want to risk $10 on a movie they don't already know.
2) Rum Diary was finished several years ago and never made it out of the vault until now. Ask yourself why before you buy a ticket?
3) I helped do the historical research on J. Edgar so I'm totally biased.
4) God, I hate Julia Roberts, that annoying laugh. Can you picture having to listen to that when she's 75.

1. That's how "smaller" movies/directors got big. Think movies like "Memento." No way that would be released as a summer blockbuster. It's original. ;)

2. I still have questions about it, but as I mentioned, Depp doesn't exactly whore himself out to any movie. So that's a plus.

4. She's not as horrible as everyone makes her out to be, but she's no Jodie Foster/Meryl Streep.

Oh, I adore Memento, fabulous fabulous. Just don't think you can go to the restroom or get popcorn during the film, you will be hopelessly lost :biggrin2: A film that demands some thinking from the audience and is still entertaining. But Memento is a very niche film, it did not make a lot of money. Studios are now a business run less on creativity and more on the bottom line. Studios in the past could afford to be more flexible because it didn't cost so much for production or god help them, advertising (often more then the productions costs). The film industry has changed completely in the last 10 years, which changed completely from 20 years ago. International film rights now dominate all studio bottom lines. Believe it or not, Red Dawn will be a huge hit overseas, just like the endless Transformers crapfest. You wouldn't believe half the scripts I read, total and utter nonsense, rehash, sequel, prequel, part 3-4-5. God, some days I could poke out my eyes.

I went and saw Killer Elite tonight. Pretty entertaining. Starring Jason Statham so obviously it's not "deep" but like most Statham movies, a lot of badass action scenes, some gratuitous violence, and a pretty cool plot line. Supposedly it is based off the movie "The Feather Men," a non-fiction story of the British S.A.S.'s involvement in Oman.

Saw Dolphin Tale a couple weeks ago. A good film fIlm for kids 7+ (smaller would get bored), but don't bother paying for 3D...no reason. Just a solid family film and being a true story makes it interesting. Plus Morgan Freeman is in it and he doesn't do crappy movies.

Just saw Puss In Boots tonight...very good. Well written and we all liked it. The 3D was really good, too. I'd put it in the Top 5 animated movies we've seen in the last few years. A few good adult jokes and good pacing. I'd recommend it to anyone, plus Rodrigo Y Gabriela did some of the music.

The next James Bond movie is called "SKYFALL". Looks like an unbelievably good cast (Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Densch, Albert Finney, etc) and Sam Mendes directing. I have very high hopes for this movie because it sounds like they were really focused on making sure the story could live up to something like Casino Royale. Add that to a very talented group of actors and it will hopefully be something special.

The opening press conference was today and shooting also starts today. Scheduled to be out at the end of October 2012. Can't friggin' wait!

No. It's not even a "so bad it's good" movie.

I think the one memorable scene was when the guy said, "Oh s**t. I gotta s**t"

What a truly brilliant movie. I meant brilliant. THere wasn't a thing I could find I didn't like about that movie.

I suppose this could be put in the Television or Music thread, but...I'm putting it here.

I just watched (on TV...TCM) "AFI's Master Class - The Art"...examining the cinematic partnership between Stephen Spielberg and John Williams. It was almost like an "Inside the Actors Studio" set-up with both Spielberg and Williams discussing all the films they've worked on together and how music works in them. It was just interesting to hear them talk about how they work together, why & where they choose to put music in the films, etc. I'd highly recommend watching it (it's re-airing at 3:30am...and maybe will be on OnDemand).

Watched "The Road." Um, a dad and son walk. End of story. Horrible.

"White Irish Drinkers" Pretty good movie. Liked how they showed the balance of loyalties (family, neighborhood, friends, etc) in a blue collar Irish neighborhood. I do recommend it.

I saw J. Edgar this weekend and gets a Meh from me. I'm not a fan of Eastwood's latest directorial work and this just adds to the list. It seemed like there was an interesting man to write a movie about, but there wasn't much of a plot to go along with it.

I was thinking more of "Hereafter" and "Changeling." I appreciated "Gran Torino" for what it was, but the racial slurs and cussing weren't a shock to me at all so it didn't leave me thoroughly impressed.

Saw the Muppet Movie and loved it. Thank you Jason Segal for bringing back a franchise. Now, it has the Disney label, so I'm sure it will puke on itself at the box office but I loved it.

There was a point I actually fell asleep. I had to keep eating popcorn in order to stay awake. I heard no good comments when I left the theater. I sure wish the Muppets wouldn't have been sold out. That's what we were going to go see this afternoon.

My sister and mom walked out not even an hour into it. My girlfriend, dad, and I all stayed, but my dad admitted he fell asleep as well at one point in the movie too.

FWIW, I didn't think it was as bad as others appear to think it was.
I wouldn't say it is a "must-see" or anything, but I don't regret seeing it. It was about what I expected it to be. Nothing more, nothing less. Not thrilling, but it at least held my interest (granted I have a fascination with the history of the FBI and police forces and all that stuff).

Saw it yesterday with the lady friend and loved it. Good mix of current references/cameos (Dave Grohl, Neil Patrick Harris) along with more generational/dated references for those who grew up with the original show (Jefferson Starship/New Coke, etc). I'd recommend it to all audiences.

Just found this, and now I'm really excited to see the movie:

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/ ... s/?a=50308

Especially this quote, since it was the one thing I was worried about, due to the MPAA b.s. standards they have:

David Fincher: "I couldn't be happier. We didn't want to whitewash it. We intend to earn our R. If you've read the Book, you know what I'm talking about."

I've heard Fincher's version is going to be even darker than the Swedish version and that's saying something. Some scenes were already graphic and he might be making them more graphic.

This is pretty much how I feel about Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. It is one of the first ones in a long time where they story lines were also tied together in consecutive movies IIRC (None of the Brosnan movies were really in chronological order were they?) They had enough story line to create two movies of decent length, or one mega-long one. They did what Hollywood will always do--split them up to make more money.

I am extremely excited!

I finally got the last 4 Bond movies so I now own all of them and the Bond movie that isn't a Bond movie!

Ok, I guess it’s my duty as Fake Shemp to post the trailer for the new “Three Stooges” movie.
It looks pretty predictable as in BAD, but what caught my eye was the inclusion of Larry David in the cast as I am a big fan of Curb and Seinfeld. Larry plays “Sister Mary Mengele” the nun you see at the very beginning of the trailer. :biggrin2:

Apparently Tinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spy is being made with Gard Oldman as George Smiley? That may be one of my favorite books of all time.

Is made. It has been shown overseas for at least a month and opens this weekend in limited cities. I'm not sure how long it will take for it to come here.

Had a really really really bad day. Found that "The Big Lebowski" is on view it now. Calmed me. Yes, that good of a movie, in a subtle manner.
Also known as Brenthoven on USCHO.
