A film that demands some thinking from the audience and is still entertaining. But Memento is a very niche film, it did not make a lot of money. Studios are now a business run less on creativity and more on the bottom line. Studios in the past could afford to be more flexible because it didn't cost so much for production or god help them, advertising (often more then the productions costs). The film industry has changed completely in the last 10 years, which changed completely from 20 years ago. International film rights now dominate all studio bottom lines. Believe it or not, Red Dawn will be a huge hit overseas, just like the endless Transformers crapfest. You wouldn't believe half the scripts I read, total and utter nonsense, rehash, sequel, prequel, part 3-4-5. God, some days I could poke out my eyes.
