I don't disagree at all. I do have to say that I think in this particular case that is was probably the MOA security who didn't want pictures taken because of the PR fiasco it may cause. The Bloomington Police probably didn't care.

Isn't the MOA police force part of the Bloomington PD?

From my experience on watching "Mall Cops of America" they are not part of the Bloomington PD. When something happens, they can hold the person and then wait for the Bloomington PD to come.

MOA police are indeed police from what I understand. But they are their own entity. Similar, I would say, to UMPD.

Nope, MOA just has security guards. If someone needs to be arrested or have a charge filed against them, the Bloomington PD is called.

oh nm... I remembered it had it's own governmental designation/dept/etc. I thought it was police but it's actually zip code. Good call on it not being a police dept.

Hey photog buddies. You may enjoy poking around on www.prophotoshow.com I frequently am on podcasts, and have written a couple of articles. The site is filled with lots of free stuff, articles, tips and lots of Lightroom talk. The guy that runs the site is a good guy (a young buck) but really knows his way around LR and Photoshop.

Also selling my Canon G9 for around $300 if you know anyone who is looking for a camera.

Well, I purchased a D90 last night from National Camera and am looking forward to getting to re-learn general photography.

I bought the kit (which included a 18-105VR lens) and an additional Nikon 70-300VR lens. I then continued to add to my receipt with a couple UV lens filters and a memory card.

I'm starting to wonder about the memory card. I purchased a 4GB "Promaster SDHC, class 6 card) for $38 but after looking at some class 6 cards on line, it looks like I can get an 8GB for about that same amount, maybe a couple bucks more. Does anyone have any experience with these cards...how much impact they have in terms of their quality?

Thanks in advance.

Unless you're shooting a large burst of photos or a lot of video, card speed is not really a factor. A card is simply a small portable solid state hard drive and the image quality will be same same no matter what card it is on. Personally, I'm a big fan of SanDisk.

Anyone have opinions about Photobucket, Snapfish, Flickr or other sites? I'm planning to post shots for my kid's peewee team and then during the summer do the soccer team. I'd like to be able to send our passwords so others can upload their photos too.

Thanks

IMO, it would be easiest to use Google Sites. You can upload any filetype (so if you have a shutterbug who shoots raw, he doesn't have to convert anything. Likewise, if you use a point-and-shoot that shoots jpegs, its fine too), You can set security options for each file as its uploaded, as to how public or private the access to it is, and there's a ton of space at your disposal to upload.

I use Picasa for sharing pictures to friends, family, etc and it works pretty well. If you use the Picasa app you can easily export the pictures and determine what resolution you want to post the photos. You get 1GB for free and can buy additional space for cheap if it is really needed.

Shutterfly works OK, but I've found that it's difficult for others to login and easily download what they want.

I have a pro account on Flickr, but there's some times I wish I had gone with Picasa instead--I've tinkered with it a little, but more or less kept with Flickr (where a bunch of my friends also have accounts). IMO for a "moderate" amount of photos (i.e. between 50 and 1,000 or so), Picasa is a much better fit, but they both have their ups and downs. A comparison:

Picasa:
+ 1 GB of free storage space; upgrading to 20 GB (probably more than you will ever need) is only $5/year
+ Integrated with Google (i.e. use your Gmail address to log in)
+ Has a nice desktop application that automatically uploads photos from your computer and serves as a viewer/organizer (Flickr has manual uploads, not unlike Facebook)
- Aggregating similar photos with other users ("groups": see below) appears difficult, although I haven't played around with this much

Flickr:
- Very little "free" space: you can only view your most recent 200 photos and can only upload 100MB/month; a $25/year "pro" account gives you unlimited storage & uploads.
+ Has "groups" that you can add your photos to (kind of like Facebook Groups) so that people can share similarly themed photos--I'm not sure if Picasa has this feature; this is the one reason I would encourage you to choose Flickr.
+ IMO has a larger and more vibrant online community - the site is very much geared toward photographers sharing their work with other photographers
+ Guarantees your data and can/will send you all your photos on CD if they decide to go out of business, etc.
...because there's FOUR!

Picasa does have some new Group URL and collaboration features that I think would be similar to what's available on Flickr. You can find the new features via this URL: http://picasa.google.com/support/bin/an ... 3&hl=en_US

The ease of being able to publish photos via the desktop application is the biggest benefit of the tool in my opinion. Plus they've added enough new editing features and some other stuff that a majority of users could do nearly everything they want right there.

The only thing I wish they would add is a bulk resize feature so I can knock some of my 18MP pictures down to a computer screen size. Even then I can just export the files to the size I want and do it that way with very little difficulty. IMO, it's just a great tool for organizing, editing, and publishing pictures.

Looking for suggestions for a good point and shoot digital. Our current Sony Cybershot is probably 5 years old and still works great (and we love the small size) but I'd like to get something that has a better zoom than the current 5X and takes better action and night shots. We don't want to take the plunge into a SLR at this time.

Would like to keep it in the $220 range if possible and any suggestions (to buy or avoid) are appreciated.
Thanks!

I got a few really cool pictures of my kids last night. We went to see the big oak tree with all the white LED Christmas lights on it in Bloomington. Wow, that thing is cool. I bet pilots see that as well as airport lights. Anyway, I had the kids at the end of the driveway with the tree in the background. Above the tree was the full moon. It may not have actually been "full". It was awefully close though.

I haven't looked at the newest crop of point and shoots, but I'd expect that some of them should have native ISO1600 capabilties that actually take decent shots and that would help with some of your night shot questions. Problem is my Canon point and shoot does it, but the pictures get pretty grainy. I'd expect that in the past couple of years that problem has gone away on some of the cameras given the advanced in technology.

Most of the newer ones should also do some action shots better just based on the technology improvements. I have a 7 year Olympus and a 2 year Canon and there's a huge difference in quality across the board. However, you're still going to have a problem with action shots in less than ideal lighting because of the slow shutter speeds and other disadvantages of a point and shoot.

I don't know a lot about them, but I think Panasonic's Lumix line has done pretty well addressing the action and lighting issues with point and shoot cameras. Someone in the family has a new Canon one that they've said does well too so I'll try to find out specifically which model.

Not sure how much help this is and others may know more since I'm kind of going off memory here.

Thank you & I ended up finding someone at Best Buy who really knew his stuff  and got a Panasonic based on his recommendation. I liked a similarly priced Nikon but the Panosonic's ability to take burst pictures (10 fames a second) and facial recognition on zoom shots (not sure what the feature is actually called) which allows one to determine the focal point on a shot sold me. The other big plus for me was the depth of field on zoom shots seemed much clearer on the Panosonic.

I just bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 and really like it. It's waterproof to 33ft and shock proof to 6 ft. It got great reviews everywhere I looked.

likely never even come close to getting it 33ft underwater but I can see bringing it to a pool/beach and it will be nice to not have to worry about it getting wet.

Yes, with a caveat. To back up for a minute: Film and digital lenses are constructed differently such that the frame size the digital lenses are built for are smaller, thus preventing you from (practically) using a digital lens on a film camera. On the other hand, because film lenses contain a larger frame size, they can be adapted for digital cameras. However, depending on the type of digital SLR, the autofocus may not be functional. This is because older (read: film) lenses often do not have the adapter rings to support a motor-run autofocus feature. In those cases, you'll just have to do a little research to see if specific digital cameras can accept certain lenses to use autofocus.

IMPORTANT NOTE: For the most part, film lenses are often MUCH SHARPER than their digital counterparts. Thus, what you may give up in autofocus capabilities, you may gain in much sharper images (which I would rather have). Not only that, but film lenses often have distance scales that makes spot focusing a BREEZE (unless you buy gold/red ribbon lenses).

Thanks for the info! I'll keep that in mind whenever I drop the $$ on an SLR!

No problem! I love photography (...a LOT), and am happy to answer any questions I can. I personally love Nikon dSLRs, but obviously if you have a large set of lenses you want to use, you may be limited in your options. It's important to note that SOME film-based lenses (FX lenses) can be used on multiple different systems, so check that out before dropping a ton of money on a camera you think you HAVE to buy, rather than the one you WANT to buy, haha...

Ok I asked this on USCHO, got some answers. Want to compare "crowds" I guess:

Need a camera. Don't need the Super SLR (whatever the hell that means) Turbo MegaSteroid3000. Need reliability, value, quality pictures, and easy to use. I gather all cameras nowadays let you upload to your hard drive.

My use for this camera? Mostly road trips, hockey in nature, so it will get jostled a little. Looking in the $100-200 range. I am willing to spend a little more if it's that big of a difference, meaning if there's an obvious difference between the min and max, fine. Might even stretch to $225-250, if it is a HUGE difference.

Can't help with that price range--that limits you to point-and-shoot, really, and my knowledge of PAS is limited... That is, unless you want a use dSLR, but that may still push your $250 limit, haha...

Rube, we bought a PAS from Costco a few years ago. It was a Panasonic Lumix, and we have been happy with it. I am no photography expert, but people seem to be hung up on megapixels. That is good to a certain extent, but optical zoom makes a big difference. You get grainy when going from optical to digital zoom. That was why we got the Lumix. It had 10x optical, when most of the others in the same price bracket had 3-4x. The electronics people at Costco actually knew what they were talking about.

I know some people who have recently bought Lumix cameras and do like them. I know a few people with the Canon SX line and love those as well. I generally lean towards Canon because of image quality, but even then it's probably not a huge difference based on what you're looking for.

I have a Canon PAS but it's a couple years old now. I'm told the SX line has shorter delays in actually capturing the image than many other PAS. If you're going to be taking anything with motion, especially if the lighting isn't the best, then a short delay is going to be critical or you'll only end up with blurred pictures. If most of what you'll be doing is static, then it's not as much of an issue but I think you'll get more bang for your buck with a $250 camera over one that's $150.

I've said it a lot here, but go talk to the guys at National Camera. Tell them exactly the kinds of things you want to do with it and ask them the pros/cons of different ones. They really know their stuff, especially the guys in Golden Valley which I know isn't far from where you live. If you go there, I'd be curious to know what they are recommending.

scharf: I will definitely check out National Camera in GV, since I've been a customer there before (although for work-related purposes). Obviously I'll shop around for the best price, but for info that would be a good start.

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

Senior Pictures

Postby Neely » Sun 4/17/11 3:47 pm

I have a "to be" senior and I am looking for someone to shoot Senior Picutres. I really want to avoid the typical studio as I feel like they really stick it to you when you buy the end product. I'd like to find someone I could pay by the hour to shoot pictures at a couple locations.

If you, or somone you know, would be intersted in shooting some portraits please PM me.

Thanks in advance.

gizmodo has a blog post up right now from a photo contest shot at 1/1000. here are some that i thought were cool (go to gizmodo to see the other 107 submissions):
link1, link2, link3, link4

edit-- i'd post the images and not links, but i'm getting this error when i try to use the "img" tags: It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image. anyone know how to get around that or how to resize using the "img" tags?

i was reading about the img tags where you can adjust the height and/or width of the img, e.g.:
Code: Select all
[img=100x50][/img]
[img width="100" height="50"][/img]

but couldn't quite figure it out. should those work?

Olympus E-PL1

Anyone have anything good or bad to say about this? It might be a less expensive first DSLR to start with for me.

I just bought one of these. Now to learn how to use a digital SLR! I am wondering, my parents had an old Hoya 300mm lens. Would I be able to use it with this camera?

Are you sure you aren't reading a filter ring that says Hoya on it? I thought Hoya only made filters, but I could be wrong... Check to see if you're reading a filter ring rather than the lens manufacturer. Either way, you will likely need an adapter ring to fit most non-MFT lenses to a MFT body, and from what I understand, you may be limited to Olympus lenses... I'm not well-versed in the MFT systems, but my guess is that even if your lens IS compatible, it would likely be manual focus-only because of the different focusing mechanisms, in which case it might not even be worth the hassle with the lens.

You will probably need a lens converter, but it should work fine. Head to National Camera, they should be able to hook you up.

Considering the cost of adapter rings for MFT bodies and the fact that you'd likely only get manual focus (and with what I'm guessing is a small viewfinder a la digital cameras), it might be just as cost effective to buy the equivalent lens for MFT bodies...

It seems they're forgetting the greatest picture ever taken:

For those with young kids, Omaha is only a 6 hour drive and the Henry Doorly Zoo is fabulous. The first picture is from the aquarium and the second from their new Madagascar exhibit called Lemur Island.

This weekend reminded why I love my Canon T2i so much. I didn't need the flash for any indoor stuff which came in really handy in many of the indoor buidings (including the aquarium)

Unbelievable. Russian photographs 100 years old taken in color.

Does anyone have any experience using EyeFi SD cards? I like the concept but would like to hear first hand experiences.

Took this with my iPhone last night. End of the dock at the end of a week long vacation.

That's a pretty good shot from a camera phone.

At the funeral for Navy SEAL Jon Tumlinson (killed a couple weeks ago in AFG), his dog guards him one last time.

I didn't know where to put this. What a powerful picture.

The National Geographic photo contest is going on right now. I grabbed this from another site but it's 45 of the 1000+ entries already submitted. Some of these are absolutely amazing and I'd love to one day just get a shot resembling anything like these.

Does anyone know where I can find a print/painting of the Koalska Leap? An exhaustive Google search yielded negative results.

Thanks.

I'm about 90% sure the Gopher Sports photo store is the only place. You can get to it through the GS website (under multimedia), or here:

http://www.replayphotos.com/minnesotaphotostore/

(the photos aren't loading for me for some reason)
...because there's FOUR!

I find it odd that I was also looking for a print of it this past week.

I don't see it listed on that site...
