Need new GPL backup location....

Postby Jupiter » Thu 2/10/11 8:51 pm

The provider for GPL only gives me 2GB of backup space for a server that holds 20GB... The GPL domain itself takes up quite a bit of space. Over the past few years I have been backing up the database to my father in-laws business server that they had in their home. This worked great until the server drive crashed. Since he doesn't use the server much anymore, he is in no hurry to replace the drive. So right now the backups are going on the server drive. Which is not very safe if the drive goes bad.

So I am looking for server space to put the GPL backups on a nightly basis. I would keep about a weeks worth of backups and overwrite the old ones as new ones are created. Does anyone have server space available? I would just need ftp info and that's it. I would setup a server at home, but my dsl is not really up to backing up that much data at night.

So if anyone has space available that would be great.

How much data are you talking about?

If I hook you up, can I get permission to play the Rouser in chat?

I will see how big tonights backup is. I can then estimate how much space is needed.

OK...I have some server capacity we're not using. Depending on size, I may be able to handle it.

My boss's boss is a Gopher (class of 1993), so I may be able to swing something depending on the volume.

Last night's backup was a bit large at 1.6GB... So I am not sure what's going on there. So it appears that 5-10GB of minimum space would be needed.

I'll take a look and see what I can do...I'm going to have to check security functionality as well as space.

After removing a few things, it's down to just over 1GB for a single backup.

Sweet!!!
I would only need almost 1100 of them for one backup!

Technically speaking, if you could find a disk and drive that big and assuming the same bit/square inch density, I'm guessing you'd only need about 10 of those disks. It appears to be a 10:1 scale model.

If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?

Have you checked out SD cards? They're reliable, and $10 gets you 8GB, that'll hold you for a while. I have a 20GB iRiver mp3 player that works well for storage, it's old but might hold you over if you need something short term.

I don't think this is an option since the data is hosted offsite and a home internet line wouldn't be up to par. Not only that, but I feel like nightly backups is a crapton of bandwidth that's used up.

Bingo....

EDIT: It was very convenient to use my in-laws windows server because they have a 20+ megabit download speed so saving to their computer was not too much of a problem. My 3 megabit connection just won't do.
