Got this e-mail tonight:

Minnesota Athletics Taking Submissions for Mariucci Arena Student Section Name

Image

The University of Minnesota is now taking submissions to name the student section at Mariucci Arena for men's hockey games. The 10,000-seat facility has been called the "best venue in college hockey" by Sports Illustrated, and has hosted three NCAA Regional competitions, two NCAA Women's Frozen Fours and numerous other national and international hockey and skating events.

However, the imposing brick building is best known for being home to the Minnesota men's hockey team and its adoring fans. No fan group is more important to the atmosphere and spirit of the building than the student section. More than 1,000 Minnesota students join the band in sections 13 and 14 - behind the goal Minnesota attacks twice - to cheer on their beloved Gophers every home stand.

The student section has gone nameless until now. Gopher fans are encouraged to submit names for the student section at sportsmanship@umn.edu and submissions will be received from Sept. 3-15. Students will then be able to vote on the top-four entries through a unique voting system. Student voting will take place from Sept. 17-24 and the new name of the Mariucci Arena student section will be unveiled Friday, Oct. 8 when Minnesota opens the 2010-11 season at home against Massachusetts.

I suppose I didn't have to add back the photo from the e-mail, but I couldn't resist after seeing that fan in red with such an unhappy expression during what looks like the our 6-1 win over the Badgers.

I'm curious why they don't want to embrace existing nicknames for the building itself and find one for just the Student Section alone instead.

"The Morgue" was suggested last go-around :D But in all seriousness, I hope this movement is just as poorly received as it was last year.

As an aside, if they name it 'crease creatures', I might just have to drive down to Ucci and projectile vomit on the poor marketing intern who answers the service bell

Odds on the 'top-four' craptastic nicknames they'll have the student body vote on:

John Hill's Fan Club - 250:1 The marketing gurus didn't realize this write-in candidate was merely an elaborate hoax meant to poke fun at the management. Hopefully, the joke stops here.

Children of the Gold - 50:1 Reminds people of that awesome flick, but the real word was "Corn" and not "Gold", which is a veiled reference to Iowa and WE HATE IOWA!

Lucia's Lunatics - 10:1 This is secretly Maturi's fave, but tDon torpedoes it since it hits too close to home.

Goldy's Army - 1:2 Too cliché, doesn't make a lick of sense (since when do Armies skate?)...which is precisely why this is the front-runner.
Suddenly, it all makes sense: "ND produces enough sugarbeets that produce enough sugar to sweeten 27 billion gallons of Kool-Aid." ND Fun Facts Image :ahhh:

yah, I got that e-mail today and puked in my mouth a little...there has NEVER been a name for the hockey student section, it doesn't frickin need one! I vote "student section"!

And I love how they say "imposing" brick building and 1000 students to cheer for the team...odd, all the advertising taking up time and crackdown on student behavior makes the student section as of late seem more like a bad zombie movie. Now the OLD areana and EARLY Mecca had a student section that the opponents hated, now they just kinda point and laugh :chainsaw:

What the U of M seems to be missing here is that you don't "name" a fan section - they kind of name themselves...or the name is earned through behavior and consistency. Nobody had a contest to name:

- Cleveland's Dog Pound
- Duke's Cameron Crazies
- San Antonio's Baseline Bums

Or countless others.

IIRC, SUA and the Athletics Department set up a student survey regarding the atmosphere at Mariucci a while ago. Among the questions, it asked about the appropriateness of certain fan cheers such as the penalty "WPoS", the funnel chant, and "F the [other team]". I basically said that all of them except the last one were fine, but when I hit submit, I got a browser error message saying that the receipt confirmation page doesn't exist on the server and ended up sending them an e-mail expressing that students already feel like they aren't being listened to and have got to do a better job of making sure that our opinions don't continue to fall into a black hole with these surveys if they truly take them seriously.

That's a very good point. I guess it wouldn't be the worst thing ever if the SS adopted a name but this alongside the crackdown on "bad behavior" is all kind of creating a snowball effect.

Excellent suggestion. However, Maturi probably won't cough up the cash for the licensing fee to Warner Bros.

I'd offer up the Mariucci Maniacs, but that would be as false advertising as the AD's original email.

Exactly. In high school we had a group of students that went to all of the home and away basketball games. Over our senior year someone started calling us the backcourt boneheads and it stuck.

I would say 'Maturi's Morgue', seeing he is trying to ruin the atmosphere of the student section and Mariucci in general.

They're eliminating the east end student section and then making Sections 12, 13, and 14 students starting next season.

They're still eliminating half a section, but that half section has always sat empty.

When I read about this contest on gophersports.com, I was cautiously optimistic that someone would come up with something creative and catchy, but if those options are the best anyone could come up with, why does the student section even need a name?

And I suppose, regardless of which is chosen, it calls for :ahhh:

Why do morons get to make these decisions? WHY WHY WHY? It didn't need a name. Now we're either going to show how stupid we are by taking the hockey team's name or naming the student section after a gold firm.

Haven't they done enough to ruin Gopher hockey and the atmosphere at Mariucci? Gosh I hate people.

If you guys don't like the choices or just hate the idea of naming the student section... Send an email to the 'U' / Mr. Maturi and tell them what you think. It may not change anything, but it doesn't hurt to try.

Maybe I should send the "Maturis' Morgue" idea to the U instead of Mr. Maturi himself, something tells me he would not like that one. :)

Emailed Maturi about this and a whole host of other issues I have.

Zwak, I like "Net Prophets", mostly because it aligns with the #1 goal of the U of M athletic department!

EDIT: Emailed Maturi about issues relating to the hockey team. I have a therapist for all of my other issues

One thing I can say about Maturi - he's gotta be the most accessible major University athletic director in the nation. He personally responded to my email in 25 minutes and forwarded my concerns on to the "Game Management ADs" - from his iPhone no less!

Here's what he had to say about ticket prices (as I mentioned my concerns that prices were already the highest in the country and I was concerned that the donations would price out many fans): "As to the ticket price, we will reduce that for those required to pay a Preferred Seat Donation."

I don't care what name is chosen the "winner" by the athletic dept. contest. The Puck Buddies is the winner, and GPL can start referring to it as such.

Zwak, you'll go down in history with all the other Gopher greats: Mariucci, Brooks, Frazee & WPOS....

Wasn't there a similar student group a few seasons ago... sat down on the glass every weekend and "led" the section? IIRC, they were pretty openly criticized on here as being just puppets of the fun police (ie, weren't allowed to do certain cheers). Makes a lot of sense from the U's perspective if you think about it... we scratch your back (rope off a row of seats, let you buy both nights), you scratch ours (start these new pc cheers you saw on that student survey a few months back, finally step on the throat of the WPoS and R&R pt. 2 cheers, etc). Would be nice if they let this student board have legitimate input and influence, but I'm not optimistic...

Anyone who actually is a current student should get on that board just to see if you can inject sensibility into the discussion. I would assume that you could quit if it was a fun police front.

It might be the same thing but I doubt it. Seeing as you can run for certain positions I would think that one of the more sensible people would have a legitimate chance of winning too. Either way it would look good on a resume and I could maybe even see myself enjoying it too

The guys who sit up front on the glass were criticized by me for being clowns. I don't think they are U organized or anything. These are the guys that go to all the hockey, hoops, and football games. They get to the game two and half hours early to make sure they can get front row seats so everyone can see them. More power to them, I credit their dedication and apparent passion for Gopher sports. However, these guys don't know the cheers well enough to lead the student section and yet that is what they are trying to do.

No I think he was talking about the U of M "Spirit Initiative" people... they wore those greenish shirts and had the front couple rows sectioned off so that nobody else could sit there. THEY had no idea what the cheers were and were just PC fun police trainees.

The people in the greenish shirts with exclamation points were not spirit initiative people; they were fan ambassadors. You're right, they know absolutely nothing about the game of hockey or cheers and don't deserve to be there. The people in the spirit initiative were the other students in the front row with jerseys on. I know this because I have a few friends that were in the group. These guys all are true college hockey fans; they show up to games early, heckle the opponent (as much as the administration lets them), cheer on the gophers, and know a lot about the game of hockey. I heard one time after the third period had ended, a fan ambassador in the green shirt turned to his friend and asked, "wait, why aren't they playing the fourth period?" Let's hope they drop the fan ambassador program this season.

Wasn't the student section just privately referred to as the "ne" section at the old building? I may be dating myself here but when my family first got tickets I swear the students were referred to as the "ne" section so this wouldn't be the first nickname...just the lamest. Of course maybe I just called them that and my college years have distorted my memory of things.

In the old building, some of us lowly students also sat in the MIN section, down near the overhang. But those were never really used as names, mere locations in the arena.

The only memory I have of students being called anything were the 3 or 4 guys who formed the "Larry Olimb Fan Club." :D :D

Hey, the University can officially call it whatever they want. It's time for the student section to develop a pair and decide for themselves. I still vote for "Puck Buddies" and suggest a BIG HUGE HOMEMADE SIGN in the student section. T-shirts with the name on it and come up with a cheery cheer cheer. The great thing about Puck Buddies is that both words are perfectly acceptable and most people won't get it. Come on students, rise up and take back your section :club: You have nothing to lose but your self respect.

and you can end the penalty cheer with a nice and loud.. " ...YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF PUCK BUDDIES" which will eliminate the on-going PC problem of not being able to yell SH!T without fear of being removed from the rink. No offense WPOS

Well, technically speaking, you don't say sh*t in the WPoS chant...
The name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back -H.Brooks

st8ofhockey: Is that a photocollage of a dick? Oh wait, that's Patrick Stewart

psych: haha, damnit dx, your phone is drunk again
dxmnkd316: f*** you, I can't stop any time I want
dxmnkd316: err wait

I don't think I'm always right. I just find it hard to operate on the opposite assumption.

When was that added on? All I remember is that the cheerleaders always stopped after "hack". IIRC the alumnae cheerleaders still do this cheer and stop there too.

If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?
