I'm looking to purchase either a high quality digital image that I can make a print out of myself or a print of the Minneapolis skyline from either the U or from somewhere like the Stone Arch Bridge. Anyone know what I should expect to pay and/or where I should look? DX's image got me thinking of it (GREAT, btw)! As a lover of MN / The U, I feel like a framed picture like this would be awesome in the main room
Thanks guys!

From my experience, what you'll pay can vary greatly from artist to artist because of the size, medium, etc. I think the best place to look would be the upcoming art shows like the Edina, Stillwater, Uptown, or Loring ones. Most of those shows tend to have actual photography and there's a few that focus primarily on local Twin Cities stuff.
The cheapest way to go is to try and head out and take the picture yourself. With a basic point and shoot digital camera and some practice you'd be surprised at what you can do. A 10MP camera would get you a really good sized picture once you mat and frame it. We have an entire bedroom of black and white photos of places we've been that we took ourselves (then it only cost us the money for the frame and mat).
We usually hit a few of the art shows around so if I see anything I'll post something here. The only local picture I have is Birawer's canvas of downtown Minneapolis.

Thanks so much for the advice, Dave!! I'd love to take the pictures myself but don't have the aptitude / bank account to purchase a nice digital camera. You think 10MP is okay for pretty good size prints?

Curious if you have any of the B&W photos to share with us?

momo wrote:Hi Gang - I'm in the market for a new camera. My Canon PowerShot SD790IS has been dropped twice & is shot. I was in the market all ready though because I'm frustrated with the way my low light shots turn out...and I shoot in low light A LOT! (Figure skating, hockey, MN WINTER ) It also takes too long to save before it's ready to shoot again. I love having video & sound, image stablizer, macro & scene selection options. I don't care about digital zoom at all. I have it turned off. I would like to use the SD card that I all ready have or to make sure my new camera comes with ample storage media. Does anyone have a Sony dsc hx5v or a Nikon Cool Pix L110? If so, any pros - cons you would share with me?
I'm guessing I'll need to spend around $300 give or take $50 to get what I'm looking for. Any input would be much appreciated, even if it's to tell me to avoid a certain model.
Thank you!!!

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and purchase my first digital SLR from Costco or Micro Center. Considering I want to take a lot of fast action sports pics, can anyone recommend a camera from http://www.costco.com or http://www.microcenter.com ? I will never be half the photographer cphockeyman is, or the rest of you are, but my nephew (like a son to me) is going to be a senior next year and is playing hockey, baseball and football. I want to capture whatever I can!

The person you "look local" with may see the above post a little more like this: I suggest you tie a salesperson, who lives off of commissions, up at the counter for an hour asking a thousand questions and getting free advice on which is the best product for you to purchase while the guy in line next buys two cameras from the "new guy" and then you say thanks, I can get it cheaper elsewhere.

I have been to their store in NYC and it is amazing. Be VERY careful when buying on-line as a lot of places sell "gray-market" goods which are a lot cheaper but do not have US warranties. (B & H is VERY reputable).

Someday I'd like to upgrade to a digital SLR, but for now, I'll stick with what I have.

Jupiter wrote:Anyone interested in some night time photography?
On the weekend of Fri 9/10 and Sat 9/11 I am having a gathering out at my house in Norwood Young America to shoot the night sky. The plan is for Fri 9/10, but if the weather does not work out Sat 9/11 is the backup date. I figure we could have a beer or two. I could get the telescope out and do some observing and some night sky photography. We could shoot star trails, capture an iridium flare, satellite, or possibly the international space station flying over.

Star Walk
Starmap Pro
Flyby - tells all the ISS, satellite, and possibly shuttle flyovers (not that there will be any in the near or distant future)

Nice.... We can make great use of those tomorrow night.

What bothers me is the description (as well as the fact that he was taking pictures):
This is the only image any one with a camera could get at the scene who was not wearing a badge. It this image you can see the security catching me with my large MarkII in hand. They had someone there within seconds to have me wipe my card clean. I however have great faith in RescuePRO from SanDisk.
Anyone else have a problem with police telling you not to take pictures or delete pictures of something on public property? Because I do.
(Although, the subject matter here is a bit too morbid.)

I have a problem with it...and evidently the photo is already gone...since a search of "minnesota" yields no results.

Again, it's completely work safe. You can't see anything.

I am just saying, in general, if the police or whoever said they would arrest you if you don't delete it, then I am pretty sure most people wouldn't want to deal with the hassle of explaining their "rights" at the police station or in court and would rather just delete it.
