GPL Donation Marathon 2010...

Postby Jupiter » Sun 2/28/10 10:09 pm

It's that time of year again when I shamelessly start the donation marathon to help pay for the server and keep this site running for another year. I figured that I better start this now before many of you leave for the "off season". We will need a minimum of $599.40 to cover the server cost this year due to a $10 price increase per month by the provider.

This year I actually have a little bit to offer to people who donate. Earlier this season I helped out the owner of USCHO.com by advertising a Neal Broten appearance at a store that he has a stake in. As payment for that he has given me two signed photos from Neal. Both photos are in a protective sheath and have a certificate of authenticity. So here is the plan.

Whoever has the largest single donation will get a 16x20 black & white photo of Neal and his Hobey Baker Award. If more than one person matches that donation, I will draw a name out of a hat to determine the person who gets the photo. CURRENT TOP DONATION AMOUNT: $300
Image

For the other photo, anyone who donates over $20 will have their name put in to a drawing for an 8x10 color photo of Neal Broten playing for team USA against the USSR. I assume the photo was taken during the miracle on ice game, but I do not know for sure.
Image

So these are two things that I can offer this year. I am guessing that these photos are a one time deal, but we'll have to see. I plan to keep the donation marathon going until MARCH 22nd. But don't feel you need to donate a lot of money just to be a part of this. A bunch of individual $5 donations go a long way to keep this place running. I know now is not the greatest time to ask for donations, but with the bad economy no time is really a good time to ask.

If you want to donate, please head over to the portal page and you will see a Donate button on the left side of the page. You do not need to be a member of PayPal in order to make a donation. I will keep track of all donations, but I don't think I will be updating people to "Golden" status unless they request it. It's a manual process and just another thing to keep track of. So unless you ask, I won't automatically give you the Golden status.

I know you guys will come through and I just want to thank you now for the donations!

Is it a silent auction/bidding thing? :)

Cutoff is the Frozen Four...

I think a silent auction is a good idea. Once over I will say who won and what the donation was.

jup, should people post thier donation amount in this thread for the silent auction so people can increase thier donation once they have been outbid?(like ebay) or is this going to be a one bid only thing? anyhow, would love the hobey pic but being unemployed can't swing that one. good luck bidders, i'm in for $25.

Ya know... You are probably right.

So people don't have to post what they contributed, I'll do this. Up top in the first thread I will post what the current top donation is. That way people can see where it's at. Sound good?

So far only 2 donations have come in....

Bump

Any more progress on the donations, Jup? Perhaps changing the thread title from "Donaton Marathon" to "Donaton Maraton" might help? :poke:

Yeah, as of now Joe-V probably won't contribute because he'll think it has something to do with tDon or tDonJr

Jup,

Long time user. Occassional poster. Annual donator. It really makes no difference, but just thought I would ask. This year I made my annual domation a little earlier than normal. I donated on 1/31. Will that donation be included for the drawing?
I was there in 75, 76, 79, 81, 83, 89, 02 and have watched our favorite team win 3 championships. :D

Yeah I didn't even notice the typo... It looks like the browser spell checker does not check the subject.

Only 4 donations so far. I knew it was gonna be slow. Donation amount totals have been steadily going down each year since I started doing it 3 or 4 years ago.

Kenny... I will add you to the list so you can get in on the drawing for the 8x10.

I am moving the end date of the donation marathon up to Monday, March 22nd. I will be charged on March 25th from my provider and I will need a few days to transfer the money over to my account so I can cover the cost. The cost of the VPS server went up $10 a month this year. So I will need at least $599.40 to cover the server costs by the 3/22 date.

DWG is by far the biggest contributor over the years.... I may be missing some information but if my calculations are correct, he has donated $415 to GPL since 2006. It looks like it will be up over $500 real soon....

It looks like I have received a few more donations than I thought.... I wasn't getting notifications from some of the donators. I didn't figure it out until I logged in to PayPal tonight. So I thought that only 11 of you had donated when the actual number is 16.

I think my mail server thinks it may be junk email because it looks like people donating from a hotmail or yahoo account are not getting to me.

DWG is by far the biggest contributor over the years.... I may be missing some information but if my calculations are correct, he has donated $415 to GPL since 2006. It looks like it will be up over $500 real soon....

Hey Jup, where are you and the GPL's going to be located during the final five? Will it be the same place as last year in the parking lot of Forepaugh's? If I find you, I will bring you a donation. :)

Not sure... I know I won't go to the tailgate.

I may only go to the evening game on Friday and the Saturday games. With the Gophers not likely to be there, I will probably not shoot much.

I really appreciate everything that has been done to make site such a great board.

Though you can donate any time you want, the deadline for the Neal Broten photos is next Monday (3/22). So if you want to get in on that you still have some time.

That would basically double the cost and most likely double the headaches for myself. To be honest it would be cool to have a dedicated server, but we just don't have the traffic to justify it.

Murrster,

Not speaking for Jupiter but I don't feel what he does with it should matter. He puts a lot of time and effort into the site. What matters is if u feel u get value from the site. A lot of in direct costs go into running a site like this. Donate and pretend you're buying him a case of beer or two :-)

I drew a random name for the 8x10 color photo and that will go to "pntball".
