Standing Rock chairman: No nickname deadlines
The chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Chairman has rejected a deadline for UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname imposed by the State Board of Higher Education.
The board had said it wants a letter from the chairman indicating whether the tribe would hold a referendum on the matter by the end of November.
But, in a letter to the board, dated Friday, Chairman Charlie Murphy wrote: “I believe that my administration would be open to discuss the matter but would prefer an open dialogue as opposed to a stipulated arrangement under deadline.”
He expressed his understanding that the board wants to resolve the issue expeditiously, but, “to be quite honest, this issue is not at the top of the new administration’s list of priority matters.”
The board wants to begin applying to the Summit League athletic conference immediately and the league has said it won’t consider any application until the nickname issue is settled.
Under a settlement with the NCAA, which considers American Indian nicknames offensive, UND and the state has until Nov. 30, 2010, to win the approval of both the state’s Sioux tribes. Only the Spirit Lake tribe has held a referendum and approved nickname use so far.
Standing Rock tribal leaders had opposed the nickname. The new chairman has been seen as more supportive of a referendum.
The Herald is seeking comment from State Board of Higher Education Chairman Richie Smith. The university system chancellor, Bill Goetz, is traveling and could not be reached for comment.

The jury determined that the bat was not defective but that Louisville Slugger should have put a warning label on the bat.

I'm sure the batter would not have used the bat if there was a warning label on it.

The latest update i heard was that the suspected shooter was a Major AND a psychiatrist. Not the typical profile for this kind of incomprehensible act.

Munley was outside the Soldier Readiness Center building when the shooter, who officials say is Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, emerged from the building gun in hand, said Chuck Medley, the director of emergency services at Fort Hood. Hasan ran toward Munley, firing at her, Medley said. Munley returned fire with her pistol, hitting him. Munley was shot in both legs and one wrist but is expected to make a full recovery, Medley said. He did not know how many times she was shot. Hasan was shot four times, officials have said. He is reportedly in stable condition at an undisclosed hospital.

Munley is a civilian police officer with the Department of the Army and serves as a SWAT team member and firearms instructor for the department, Medley said. He said she joined the police force in January 2008 after serving in the Army.

Give me a ring the next time you're back in the Cities. We can go watch Sid Hartman sob uncontrollably now that teams are starting to leave the Metrodome.
If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?

I saw that in the other thread and I suspected we were close to the date. History (or History International, I forget which) had an interesting documentary of the complete history of the Wall yesterday.
A United Airlines pilot who failed a breath test shortly before he was due to take off has been charged with having too much alcohol in his system, British police said.
Erwin Vermont Washington, 51, is the third U.S. pilot in 13 months to be arrested for being over the strict alcohol limits imposed on airline staff.
Washington was arrested after officers were called to United Airlines Flight 949, which was already full of passengers and due to leave London's Heathrow Airport just after noon on Monday.

The only thing I don't like about this is that it will become a media circus. A military court...especially from the lovely facilities in Cuba...wouldn't allow for that.
My only hope is that they don't receive the death penalty. In the perverse view of the 9/11 conspirators, that would be a reward. I also hope the shooter at Fort Hood doesn't receive the death penalty...much for the same reason. Let them all rot at Fort Leavenworth or one of the Supermax prisons. I'm sure they'll get plenty of "attention" from the other prisoners.
