High School Hockey 2009-10

Postby Slap Shot » Tue 11/03/09 4:18 pm

Well, the new year has to be drawing near I would think.

-Have teams begun staking yet?
-Has FSN released their schedule?
-Which teams should be considered favorites to return to state?
-Are there any teams with legitimate shots at making their first ever state appearance?
-Toughest sections?
-Rule changes?
-Up and coming players?

Anything at all!!!!

7AA will be very competitive, Elk River is the early favorite (returning players plus East's losses to their roster), but Duluth East and Grand Rapids will be in the mix. Cloquet I think is rebuilding, Andover might be a team to keep on the radar. Grand Rapids has a lot of players returning, should have a solid D corps, and their top line should do some damage, don't know about the other forwards or who the goalie will be.

Well until FSN announces their schedule, I want to get this on here early to let everyone know that the Minnesota Sports Broadcast Network will be broadcasting LOTS of high school hockey this season with LIVE VIDEO! For the last four seasons, MSBN has only been an audio-based webcaster of sports in the State of Hockey and as of August, we have unlimited video capability. Expect at least one game a week of high school hockey to have LIVE VIDEO starting in December and all the way through the end of the regular season! All of this can be found on MnSportsNetwork.com! As the hockey season gets closer check the MSBN Full Schedule in order to view our ever growing broadcast schedule.

MSBN will also be broadcasting 30 HS Football games during the remainder of the season on MnSportsNetwork.com! This includes ALL semifinals and finals of the 2009 State Football Tournament from Mall of America Field at Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome! Check all of it out again on the MSBN Full Schedule!

OK, shameless self promotion over. I'm ready for some HS PUCK!

Not sure of the date that practice starts. It could be Monday, but I think the following Monday is more likely. The first games I've seen scheduled are November 27 (the day after Thanksgiving) and practice usually starts about two weeks before that.

That should be thrilling hockey. I guess they save a ton in production costs when they only have to shoot the half of the ice that Benik skates on.

The Hockey Day Minnesota matchups aren't as good as years past, I am happy that they are showcasing a different part of the state. Hopefully the games are outside again, I like the park hockey type of game, less checking and more puck handling...I think its great to watch one day a year.

It's girls' HS hockey, but thought this was interesting...

I was reading the online edition of the Austin (MN) paper...and saw a girls' game writeup that showed AHS had 97 shots on goal in a 7-0 win over Windom.

I'm not sure what's more impressive - 97 shots or 90 saves.

Link

There was plenty of offense to go around for the Austin girls hockey team in a 7-0 win over Windom at Riverside Arena Monday.

The Packers (1-1-1 overall) set a school record with 97 shots on goal and four different players found the back of the net in the win.

It's probably an improvement over a game they had last year (Rochester John Marshall vs. St. Paul Johnson :bored: ).

I'm impressed that Windom can field a girl's hockey team.

Jamboree time at the Moorhead Youth Arena yesterday with some pretty good teams in town. Moorhead spent time on the ice with Blaine, Centennial and St. Thomas Academy.

I didn't get a chance to see the Blaine or Centennial games but heard that they skated even with Blaine and that they looked pretty good against Centennial but that the Cougars probably got the better of them. People I talked to were very impressed with Centennial.

I did get a chance to see the STA session. Great skating game with lots of up and down action and good flow. Fun to watch. I was very impressed with STA's forwards and the guys I think were Isaacson and Schroeder looked very good.

Overall, Moorhead outplayed STA somewhat and had the better of the play. The Spuds young D looked pretty good and did a good job of keeping the Cadet forwards away from the net. This will be the question mark this year. Moorhead's forwards skate very well, yet some decent sized guys, and will be good again this year and their goaltending will be a strength with two good goalies returning.

While I certainly don't have illusions of this being a top 5 time this season, I think the polls I've seen that don't even have Moorhead in the top 20 are flawed. My guess is Moorhead will hover around the 8-12 mark at the end of the year and should have a pretty solid season.

Agreed. These are the ones I have links for in the "Recruiting Links" thread. All have quite a bit of information.

Not sure about "Pointstreak" at this point. No new information has been added yet. Not sure if the high school coaches association will be using it this year.

Took in a couple of games this weekend. Minnetonka-Duluth Marshall on Friday. Tonka's got a load of talent as predicted, they really took apart what should be a solid Woodbury team in the tournament final last night. I thought Marshall was solid without some of the standouts they've had in recent years. Sophomore defenseman Jake Bushey might be a player to watch down the road.

Apple Valley-Eastview yesterday afternoon. Entertaining game that was kept close by Eastview senior goalie Ryan O'Shea. Apple Valley has some nice young talent that could make for a nice run over the next few years if they stick around. Sophomore forward A.J. Michaelson and freshman forward Hudson Fasching are the kind of players that the NTDP program will probably be interested in next spring and the year after.

If you're like me, you love the old school smalltown MN hockey and take no inane interest in Metro hockey (short of watching Gopher recruits). That being said, here are a handful of games in the first half that give an opportunity to see some of those smaller schools come to the Metro area:

Thursday, December 3, 2009- Duluth East at Maple Grove
Friday, December 4, 2009- Warroad at Mound-Westonka
Saturday, December 5, 2009- Greenway at Henry Sibley
Saturday, December 12, 2009- Virginia at Hopkins
Thursday, December 17, 2009 - Grand Rapids at Edina

Burnsville-Edina on FSN tonight. Edina is 1-1 after playing in the "Turkey Trot" in Plymouth this past weekend. They beat Maple Grove in the first game and lost to Wayzata in the championship. Burnsville comes in at 0-1 after losing to Hill-Murray on Saturday.

A few players to keep an eye on for Edina: Senior defenseman David Jarrett, junior defenseman Max Everson and junior forward Michael Sit all both played in the Elite League this fall and skated at national Select camps this past summer. Senior Charlie Taft also played in the Elite League. I saw freshman defenseman Parker Reno in a AAA tournament late in the summer and he looked like a player that will be heard from down the road.

For Burnsville junior defenseman Sean Madigan played in the Elite League and junior goal tender Bohdi Engum made the national Select 16 camp this summer. Senior forward Adam Smyth is their top returning scorer.

So I turned on the East Ridge-St. Francis game:
- Did Cottage Grove build a new rink?
- The dude from St. Francis has the hair to play at Jan. :)
Change is good.

Yep. Same complex as the old, now it is huge with two full size and a studio. Ran into Rookie out during a Squirts tourney last weekend.

Thanks. Even though the announcer said they were in CG and it said Cottage Grove at center ice it didn't look at all familiar. I've spent waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many hours in the original CG rink in my lifetime that I'm sure I would have recognized it. :)

Hill-Murray vs. Benilde tonight on FSN. Should be one of the more interesting games on their schedule.

If you want a chance to watch Tyson Fulton skate and not drive out in this snow, the Minnesota Sports Broadcast Network will broadcast tonight's Saint Thomas Academy versus Breck School boys hockey game tonight from Breck School Anderson Ice Arena in Golden Valley at 7:30 pm for FREE. The LIVE VIDEO broadcast will start with pregame coverage beginning at 7:20 pm. Again the website for you to watch Tyson Fulton as well as Gopher Recruit Christian Isackson and about a dozen other players that would fit very nicely at the U from the last two Class A State Champions.

Yeah I'm a geek. I have both the STA-Breck game online (3-2 break ~5 left in the 3rd) and HM-BSM (2-1 BSM after 2) on FSN going.
Change is good.

STA wins in OT on a PP goal (check from behind, no brainer), Crandell (sp) buries it and the Breck goalie kept them in the game. Shots were 55ish to 25ish.

Still 2-1 BSM with ~10 to play.
Change is good.

I am in Missouri this week and I was happy as hell that I could watch some Minnesota hockey online.

It's been a while, but I remember that if he gets a shot off on the breakaway there isn't a penalty shot even if he is taken down in the process? Or maybe the ref knew the game was on FSN and just wanted some more TV drama :D

Gotta give my nephew props, he got some varsity time after playing some JV and got credited with his first ever varsity goal for Shakopee!

BSM is happy they have such a great goalie, because they don't look nearly as skilled in front of him as they did last year. Might be too early to make that call, but that was my impression pre-season and last night didn't do anything to change that opinion.

Whether or not the player gets off a shot while being taken down is not relevant to the decision to award a penalty shot according to the rules. If it is determined that a player has a clear path to the net (i.e. a breakaway) and they are taken down taking, subsequently taking away a scoring chance, a penalty shot may be awarded. In fact, play can continue until the opposing team takes possession of the puck - meaning that in the interim time the team that was attacking could take several shots, etc. and still be awarded a penalty shot for the initial play.

The rule is all about taking away a clear scoring chance, it doesn't have anything to do with whether or not the player got the puck on net with any type of shot, the idea is that the shot and opportunity was hindered by the offending players act (hook, trip, slash, etc.) and a clear path to the net and a scoring chance was lost.

Well that explains it, Thanks.
