Rumor is they still let the band play the "Battle Hymn" after a sweep- for now at least!

I was wondering why I heard the students singing R&R part 2 in the 2nd period..... If they piped that song in, there is NO reason why the band cannot start playing that song. If they don't, the University administration is a joke and would deserve to get hammered for it.

That is amazing, I heard it too. I wonder if it was the administration or the band administration that nixed the Gary Glitter song.

No way the band had anything to do with that. No way, no how. Those people love the gophers as far as I'm concerned and have a lot of the gripes that we do. They're just as pissed that they're being handcuffed. This stuff comes from the higher ups. Well, at least in my twisted view of the world.

I got the scoop on Rock and Roll Part II from today, and it's unfortunately very simple: The guy who was in charge of that little ad segment was new and didn't know that that song had been outlawed at Mariucci. There was apparently a lot of discussion on the headsets after RR2 was played, and lots of assurances that it WON'T happen again. Too bad! We had some fun with it today :D

The band was right behind me, and it looked like they were barely concealing their glee while it played

The Maturi-Ellison Sportsmanship Comrades should know the above at a minimum. They could even look it up on their phones in between texting and screwing up the Hey! Song or the Funnel Cheer.

As far as the kids not knowing the cheers, come on. You're in college and have eyes and ears. I picked it up from older kids when I was a freshman without anybody wiping my butt for me. It only took two or three games to get it all down pat.

IMHO:
Get rid of the lottery and the student section will fix itself. The really long ads and dumb promotions will still kill intermissions, but at least we'll have the kids who want to be there and know how to read a digital clock and start the Hey! Song right.

Just a random note--the lottery system is no longer in effect. This year we had to register online and the tickets went on sale at 7 AM, similar to the way the department set up the student football tickets. This was not well-advertised to the students--our group only knew because they called the ticket office. For a lot of my friends, the first day of hockey ticket sales was over before they realized it had started.

And the fun suck is horrible. I hope they realize that taking away the WPoS cheer just makes us yell it even louder (at least I do!).

Wow, is it getting worse every weekend over there? Is there anyone that knows Lucia on this board on a personal level or at least a conversational level that can ask about what is going on here and if he is in support of it? I am sure if he voices an opinion the opposite way then it could help.

the students ARE gettign it, and DHG is right, if they do it during play, not much the U can do short of booting the whole section.

Odd thing was the EMPTY eliis cheer squad seats last afternoon...EMPTY!?!??! :confused2:

good to see the "butt dance", or "S", going again and going strong! About time! For many years it was pretty sparce for participation.

I'm assuming you're being serious and not sarcastic (sometimes I can't tell with you :D ) but... Lucia hates swearing of any kind. He's kind of a wuss when it comes to the atmosphere of college hockey. He talks about having a great, clean atmosphere, which I think he doesn't realize means a lackluster, QUIET atmosphere. Every other coach in the WCHA will say they don't like profanity when someone presses them... but Lucia will go out of his way, sometimes on his radio show, to say that he doesn't like it and that the students should stop. I think that this is one of the reasons (besides 1. Joel Maturi having served on the NCAA sportsmanship commission and 2. The UMN athletic department being total wusses and suckers for $25,000) that UMN is letting the "NCAA" take a stranglehold on our cheers. Think about it... our cheers are not that bad compared to just about every other school in the nation, and yet they're coming after us. I'm starting to think that they have a good hold because our head coach isn't protesting the weak atmosphere.

I've been going to games for a long time and the WPoS cheer has been at Marriucci the whole time. Sunday my wife turns to me and says, "How can they say that?". She's heard it every game for how many years? I guess it came through loud and clear Sunday. Was the difference the band? They used to play over it and now they don't?
If that's the case, what changed?

The student section got smart halfway through on Saturday and realized that if they wait until the announcer stops announcing the penalty, it comes through louder... plus the arena was half-empty, so there was less cover noise... and the students were still a little mad about the penalty cheer being nixed. I think it's mostly the first two.

I enjoyed the "Start the Kayak" and "Sarah Palin" chants toward the end of the game on Saturday. Nice work whoever started them. And for at least part of R&RP2 during the third period, the students were clapping correctly.

I am convinced that the student section hasn't sold out (see section 3). There wasn't a lottery this year, you simply ordered them online in an identical process to buying the football tickets. Last year the Friday night student tickets didn't even sell out! The ticket prices have also decreased in the years I've been buying tickets. I think it has everything to do with team performance and the lack of a Frozen Four appearance in the last few years. Needless to say I'm disappointed.

talked to some real nice people pregame for the Football game, odd, about my age and they can't understand the desire to kill off certain unnamed cheers either, and they were repping the "U"! These decisions by non-alums about OUR traditions is CRAP!

you want cohesion, keep traditions and create some new ones as well, but you have to TEACH the new ones (maybe some handouts?!?!?) and not make them LAME! How many of the current student base know ALL of our school songs? Yes, there is more than one.

W

P.S. tDon was talking near the end of the game on Friday night about how good the UW students are with "no swearing" obviously tDon pays more attention to the game (as he should) than to what is screamed out in that arena.

Here's the deal with fan conduct as far as I know it: The main goal is to get rid of the swearing. The U is not out to ruin traditions or take the fun out of the student section, they simply want no more swearing. I even think the WPoS cheer would be OK if it became the WPoCrap cheer. That having been said, the R&R Part 2 cheer was nixed partly because of Mr. Glitter and partly because of "Sioux Suck". So who knows, Crap, like Suck might be a swear word in the U's lexicon. I DO know that "s**t" is what's driving the want to remove the cheer.

Also, for those of you who think this is all coming down from one or two people, c'mon, get serious. This thing is not Mr. Ellison's brainchild. It happens to fall under his charge by virtue of his position in ICA. I don't know that the term "resident d-bag" is called for toward someone who's doing what's asked of him. There's a whole committee working on this thing, not only the the University level, but at the NCAA level too. UMD and UND are also beginning this process too. It's not just a Maturi, Ellison, or U of M thing.

Most of us on this board like to think we're pretty smart and witty. I'll be we can help create a cheering section that can boost the Home team and sting the visitors without the use of profanity. And don't get me wrong, I've used more than my fair share of four-letter words during the time I spent in the Student Section, but those days are gone.

I'll have to sanitize my hands after typing these words, but...

Duke's students have shown you can sting with wit while avoiding profanity.

Talked to Skeeter the other day, and he said that this is not the first time the U tried to shut down the WPoS chant. Didn't work before and won't work now. I'll bet the Mortal Kombat cadence will be back sooner rather than later.

Actually, the Mortal Kombat cadence is the result of the last attempt to ban WPoS. Before that, it was a simple drum cadence, but the U put the ki-bosh on that. In order to not run afoul of the AD, they switched the penalty song to Mortal Kombat. Funny.

This is why I bet they are not playing a consistant song after a penalty, to avoid that. I've been told the U is lookign to this being a MULTI year effort to kill off the cheer. Fine take off the "SHNIT" and replace it with "CRAP" and move onto things that realy matter in the program...like winning more games!

Why not have one student section?

Why not allow people to tailgate with charcoal grills?

Why not allow adults over 21 to drink alcohol?

Why not allow adults over 21 to play drinking games while tailgating?

I have heard (someone correct me if I am wrong), that when WPoS first came out, the students just said :censored:, not :censored: iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. So, the band did exactly that, played a random note so you couldn't hear the swear on tv. So, in response the students dragged out the last word to out-last the band, and we have the cheer as it stands today.

Yeah, god forbid the Censor you from screaming obscenities at the top of your lungs in front of 8 year olds. I am embarrassed by those actions I used to take place with as a freshman at UMD. DHG's got a point.

When you're 19 and sitting in the stands, you might think that calling a player or ref out with the help of a few F-bombs makes you witty and a bit cool.

When you're in your 30s and taking your 8 year old to his or her first major college sporting event, hearing the students drop those F-bombs makes you regret taking your kid to the game - and kind of ruins the experience for your child.

Yes, think of the children.

Would you be OK with me sitting next to you in the stands and lighting up a big stinky cigar? Didn't think so...and I don't want your secondhand profanity around my kids, either. Again, I go back to the fans at Cameron. They can be devestatingly effective in their witty cheers and don't have to resort to foul language to do it. I'd like to think our fans are capable of that, too.

Here's a funny story about students at a hockey game. Last year when the sue came to Mankato to play the cows my boss gave me their blue line tickets for the game. So I took the family like always, I know with such great fans from the sewage and pissed up students something was going to happen since on Friday night the cows won very handily. Anyway, at the end of the game a nice little raucous broke out  on the ice. Of course the mental midgets that are the pissed up cow student section began filling the ice with empty beer bottles and the like. My impressionable 4 year old son picked up one of my empty beer bottles and told me throw it out onto the ice... . I had to explain to him in the midst of this ongoing chaos that is not the right thing to do, he didn't understand and pointed to the student section saying that they were doing it so I should be also.

In the end I think that traditions are great but sometimes the classy thing to do is make it PG-13 and not R.

I cry for our society and what it has become (PC). A few short (1-2) years ago, the word "shnit" was on the radio, was on broadcast TV, was in PG-13 movies, suddenly now it is the downfall of our children...right... I thought the moral majority died out years ago.

If you are so worried about your children, you better blindfold them from seeing scantily clad women on TV, movies, billboards, and heck, the street. You better plug their ears from what they might hear on the school bus, in class, on the playground. You better bind their hands so they don't play violent video games. Remember Bugs, Daffy, and the Roadrunner? All those cartoons have been cencored for "violence", yet you can graphically blow the snot out of bad guy in a video game. Wake up people, before all these new rules our PC society has imposed parents did what parents were supposed to do, raise their kids, not pawn them off on society. I think the funniest thing I have read in this thread is DHG calling for PC in our society; you lose your cahojes when you suddenly have kids and everything in the world has to be pink elephants and daisies?

disgusted with this whole PC crap...oh wait, crap is a swear word now too... :confused2:

p.s. the band can't blat out the "S" because they can't play while the puck is in play. Go sit on your hands and be nice and quiet now children...enjoy the atmosphere in the morgue. :chainsaw:

So where do you draw the line--are you OK with the F**k the Badgers type cheer? How about racial slurs? I was at a Twins game a few years ago. Matsui was up. Some idiot a few rows behind me started calling out "Egg Roll" I stood up and stared at him. Didn't hear that one again. Bet that idiot complained about PC too.

PC is similar to driving. The idiot in front of you going 5 MPH slower than you (one) is a problem. The idiot going 5 MPH faster than you trying to get around you is a problem.

EVERYONE has their threshold. The 18 year old STG would call PC at the 37 year old STG. (Whom I also believe has complained about PC in the past.)

It isn't really political correctness--it is courtesy. Do unto others. If I don't want to be called a bohunk, then don't call me that. How hard is it?

And for cheers, the best ones I have heard are not foul, they are clever. I think putting Sioux at the end of the cheer does the job.

But I doubt the 19 year olds will go for it....
Please continue the petty bickering.

Orion, you are quite right, no kids. And to some, probably a good thing I'm not going to. I grew up on a farm working my butt off every day, didn't have video games and learned what it is like to listen to my parents and teachers. Sorry, but I feel kids these days have none of that. Teachers can't even raise their voices to the kids in the class. Children have no respect for teachers or adults in the world. And guess what, we've "cleaned up" our act for the kids...odd, kids these days are a ton worse than when the world was "dirty". So sorry, I don't buy the PC crap being shoved down our throats by "concerned" parents.

Change the cheer to "crap" and move on. Piddling over it is stupid.

and BTW, the worse word I used as a student fan consistantly was the "S" word in cheers. The fenhiemer is just right out.

You are absolutely correct in this one. If the 18 year old version of me ran into the 37 year old version of me, he'd expect to hear "get off my lawn" at some point.

I'm no fan of political correctness. I'm disgusted when I see a little old lady get searched at the airport, while the guy in the "death to America" t-shirt moves right through security. There's a difference between being politically correct and being foul mouthed.

my point exactally, where do you draw the line? is "suck" a bad word that can't be used in cheers? Is "crap"? There are obvious things that don't belong, but sorry, "shnit" being such a hoopla is jsut plain silly. And while I agree with you on courtessy, you can only go so far, someone, somewhere will always have an issue with SOMTHING being said...sometimes you have to suck it up and move on...

Get the students to say "crap", and move on..."Sue" would not be accepted by the U...since "Sue Suck" in R&R II is the "bad" part of the cheer. Don't worry, soon "crap" will be banned as well.

thing is this a year or so ago, "s" word was on Clear channel radio stations, now it's not....when the cheer started "S" wasn't "swearing"...make it "crap" and move on...us old timers will still know what it SHOULD be.

In true Duke fashion, if faced with the similar ban, the Dookies would likely continue the "WORTHLESS PIECE OF..." then all cover their mouths and sit down very quickly without saying the s-word. It gets the point across while making fun of the censorship by greatly exaggerating it. Creative, funny, and effective. THAT is what makes a good student section-- never "F--- the [insert team name]", which is bland, unimaginative and expected. Given our longtime use of it, "Gopher rejects" has the same effect; though, "Michigan Rejects" for Ohio State a few years ago was quite good.

Anybody else find it funny that Maturi is in the paper today trying to figure out why students are not interested in attending these sporting events and filing the student sections? Perhaps if you let them act like students and enjoy the experience they would be more inclined to drag themselves out of bed to attend a game. I also think it is ridiculous to play any piped in music when you have the student band in the house.

For the record, I am not a student I am a father of a 5 year-old. I have taken him to Gopher football and hockey games. I would certainly prefer that he not hear certain words, but I understand that if I am going to take him to some of these events that is the risk I run. These events are for the students of the university, my kids experience does not trump that of the students.

Maturi was talking about the football games, not hockey. One has nothing to do with the other and they are completely different issues.

And the "S" word was always swearing, but now for whatever reason (NCAA fiat, complaints...whatever) the U doesn't want you to use it. Why are you acting like someone beat your grandma up over this WPOS? Why is your opinion any better or more valid than STGs? Your little whinefest about our PC culture may be correct but it has nothing to do with what is going on here I am sorry. What is wrong with making things a bit more family friendly...I dont have any kids but I would rather have that than have to deal with the idiocy of some of the other places I have been.

If the students are truly that upset and aren't going to show up because of it good riddance to bad rubbish. If they can't take 5 seconds out of their day to think of something else to say so that their song can be played and their chant heard then who cares. When I was there they banned the song once too, we still friggin did it and found ways to make it work. (like not necessarily pronouncing the "sh" just the "it") I am sorry but in today's society 8 year olds swear it isnt cool and hip anymore it is tired and played out.

Maybe its time to add some new cheers to the repertoire already. Every game I go to I hear the same cheers "Junior College", "Gopher Rejects". "F the whatever" I mean seriously if you want to make Mariucci less of a morgue how about come up with cheers that have a little bit of creativity more often. The silence at Mariucci isnt because you can't swear, its because you have nothing to say.

"Maturi was talking about the football games, not hockey. One has nothing to do with the other and they are completely different issues."

Explain how it is different? The issues are identical. If you strive to create a sterile environment--wheter at a hockey game or a football game--that will offend no one, you lose the alot of the atmosphere created at these events. You also lose the students who enjoy that atmosphere. You say good riddance to that those that do not like it. Apperantly, the U disagrees with you as they are trying to figure out how to bring the students to the games.
