Free preview of NHL Center Ice for the first three weeks of the season (October 1-October24). I believe all major cable providers, DirecTV and Dish Network are involved.

FYI

I am a Directv subscriber (not quite 2 years) and called in to voice my concern about the loss of Versus. They offered me NHL Center Ice 50% off.

And my understanding is some have gotten it free if they raise a big enough stink.

Can someone please tell me what kind of precedent the NHL is trying to set these days? That we don't check and we are turning this into Euro hockey? We can't hip check anymore?

He's a repeat offender, thats why he got suspended. Ott is a dirty player and has made a career off of cheap hits. This hit wasn't the worst but the NHL is trying to send a message to him, he also had a knee on knee in this game.

This puck daddy blog will shed some more light on why he was suspended.

Say what you want, that was a plain old hip check. I don't care if he has been suspended 40 times, that is not a suspendable hit if your golden boy Crosby does it. In fact, those same people calling it dirty would be talking about Sidney "laying it on the line for his team," "just an old school hockey player," "he can get gritty too." That is how it would be and you know it.

Not really trying to get on you, I am just making a valid point on how it would have went down had Crosby or even Malkin made the exact same check.

I saw them review that play and some others during the Wild game Monday on Versus, I agree with the twerps on Versus that the hip check was a legal check but it was really done for no reason...the puck was clearly passed away. In the end that wasn't a dirty hit, just a ole hip check...

There nothing "freak" about it, only stupidity. You don't do that when your goalie is in the net. He should sit a game for being that stupid. I am sure the "he was a gopher so you hate him" rebuttal is coming but I would say the same thing about a bulldog too. In my opinion a freak accident in hockey is when someone gets hit in the face with a skate becuase someone gets upended and has not control of themselves. That would be freak.

I myself have always like ballard since the threw our brooms back to us in the stands in 2004.

Agree that what Ballard did was stupid, and obviously he regrets it.
Throwing anything on the ice during a game is also very stupid and regrettable.

Most intelligent college hockey fans would be ashamed to admit they ever threw anything on the ice during a game.

This was a very stupid decision by Ballard. DHG nails, you do not do anything of such form when a goalie is in the net or anywhere near the net. I wonder if the NHL will suspend him? I agree he should sit for a bit for such a stupid decision.

Hawks extend contracts with Kane, Toews, and Keith.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=300811

Sources tell TSN that Toews and Kane will sign identical five-year contract extensions worth about $6.3 million per season. Meanwhile Keith's deal is worth $72 million spread over a whopping 13 years at an annual average of $5.5 million.

Its unreal how much money and years the hawks have tied up on these players. This franchise is handcuffing itself, they'll be unable to make deals later on down the line.

Duncan Keith 13 years $72 million
Marian Hossa 11 years $54.3 million
Brian Campbell 6 years $42.8 million
Pat Kane 5 years $31.5 million
Jonathan Toews 5 years $31.5 million  (Sue Suck!!!)
Dave Bolland 3 years $13.5 million :|
Cristobal Huet 2 years $11.5 million

Note: These are the numbers starting next season.

The wild won't get one in the near future for two reasons:

1. The fact that they aren't an original six or have a cathedral park to play at
2. The attitude of a lot of minnesota fans who think that somehow playing outside is gimmicky and brings down the NHL. (Before you start flaming, reread that statement and realize I said a lot not most. Thanks in advance.)

Minnesota has a very good chance of hosting a Winter Classic. I know the NHL as been in contact with the Wild as a possibility in 2011 or 2012. It also seems like the NHL does not want the Winter Classic hosted by a Canadian city. So only about 10 American cities could host a outdoor game with a winter climate.

I totally agree with your quote. The funny thing is, a majority of these Minnesotans with this attitude you would find at the game.

Huh... I did not know that and I stand corrected. I am one of the people that would do anything to be at a winter classic game with the wild. I love that kind of stuff. I've been meaning to try to get to one of the Hockey Day games outside but never really followed through.

Regarding the second point, you're 100% correct and that's what irks me the most. One more reason to hate minnesota sports fans :)

They talked about the Wild hosting during last night's 'game' as they plugged this years outdoor game. It will be at TCF and not Target when they do host. Although, by then they might just be able to rip the top off the metrodome. :)

I have seen the Wild on the road more then at home(in fact I haven't been to a home game due to living out of state) so I haven't been part of the atmosphere at a wild home game. So my question, to the board, is do we have a good rival worth of the hype? Yes, I know the Canucks, Flames ect are always important games to us, but all division games are important. If we were still the North Stars not much doubt that Chicago would be a good game no matter the record of either team. Does the hockey world really care about Minnesota vs anybody? Especially if this is aimed at bringing in a new hockey fan. I think having a new coach with a new style of play helps, but we need to keep evolving into a more exciting team. Giving time for some of our MN kids headed for the Wild develop and play to push that angle, although that maybe a little to Hollywood for MN, the hockey world might like it. GO GOPHERS!!!!!

MN - Dallas would be intersting.

I agree, but if we lost an outdoor game to a team from TEXA$$ I would destroy a lot of expensive audio/video in my home, not to mention one that should still be HERE. On a side note, Hull was in the crease.

Other Western Conference teams:
1) Vancouver (NW rival and brings Canada into the mix)
2) St. Louis (American team with a good fan base)

If they go with a Eastern Conference team:
1) NY Rangers (Org. 6 team)
2) Toronto (Org. 6 team)
3) Montreal (played in the Heritage Classic ('03) @ Edmonton)

There is a couple questions I think the NHL has,
1) Do they keep trying to get new teams in the Winter Classic?
2) Do they bring Canadian teams into the mix?
3) Keep it American teams and try to stir the interest of the American fan?
4) After the Org. 6, and a small handful of other NHL teams with history and a fan base who would they want to play in the Winter Classic?

I always thought this would be a great tie-in to Hockey Day Minnesota. Have a high school game early in the day, Gopher v (Bulldogs, Huskies, Sioux) in the early afternoon and then a Wild game at night. It would be gimmicky, but could be a good selling point to the NHL.

Agree, I always the thought the same. Though the NHL would want their day and have the other 2 play the day before or after.

What's cool is the NHL stumbled onto something that is great for the league.
What sucks is the NHL will find a way to :censored: it up.

why don't they put the rink home plate to 1 base closer to the seats so paying customers can see what is going on, and put bleachers in on the other side???
